As the school year is winding down and kids are restlessly anticipating their summer break, it’s fun to plan some exciting adventures with family and friends! and why should I consider investing in them?
According to the Oppenheimer Mutual Fund Company, over the past 15 years Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) have experienced a 17 percent annual average rate of return, compared to 7 percent for the Standard & Poor’s 500. Cumulatively, that computes to 938 percent for MLPs compared to 157 percent for the S&P 500. While not appropriate for everyone, we feel every investor should at least assess the potential of MLPs for their portfolios. MLPs own the backbone of America’s energy infrastructure (drilling, transporting, storing and ultimately delivering capabilities) for oil and gas products. This is so important that Congress created a special tax status and corporate structure (MLPs) to promote the production and delivery of these critical resources. In the past few years, the U.S. has discovered huge deposits of both oil and gas which may soon turn our country into an energy exporter instead of an importer. The technology to extract these vast new assets is already available, but the transportation and storage capabilities (“midstream”) are currently the weak links in the energy chain - and may offer the biggest investment opportunities. Many stocks or mutual funds are purchased primarily in hopes of selling them later for a higher price – a capital gain. While this is also a goal for MLPs, their main focus is to generate income by owning and then leasing pipelines and storage tanks to major oil and gas companies. The long-term leases can provide a steady income – which is impacted less by the current price of oil or the gyrations of the stock market. Suwanee Couple Shares Simple Message: Less Judgin' More Luvin' BY: Amy Wilson
aking the decision to have a positive outlook may seem simplistic, but that simple step can be life-changing, as one Suwanee couple has discovered. With their website and product line, Less Judgin' More Luvin', Chris and Georgianna Shumate are sharing this philosophy with the world. Chris Shumate has always been a straightforward person, but he says he began to realize a couple of years ago that his tendency to say what was on his mind—good or bad—wasn't always received well. "Although people seemed to appreciate my sincerity, my delivery made me seem unapproachable” Shumate said. “I began to evaluate how I interacted with people and realized it was time for me to make a change." He expressed that realization in four lighthearted words: Less Judgin' More Luvin'. The basic idea began around May of 2011, but it wasn't until September of that year that Shumate and his wife decided to build the idea into a brand. Spending the next year developing the website design and the look they wanted, the site went live in December 2012. The Less Judgin' More Luvin' website currently offers products such as t-shirts, hats, koozies, and cups, all of which feature their message. In the future they hope to expand their apparel line to include fleeces, loungewear, and holiday-themed items, and they are also looking to add more accessories like bracelets, mugs, and bags. Long-term goals include a children's book and stuffed animals. They are working on expanding into retail markets, as well, and plan to have their products in gift shops and boutiques as well as at the Atlanta Merchandise Mart. Friends and family have helped them to spread the word and the line of products has been well received. "From our analytics, we know the response has been from people all over the world,” Shumate said. “We are receiving very good feedback. They like the look and feel of the shirts and the message is resonating with people. They seem to recognize how substantial the positive applications can be, and many like the concept as it applies to them personally. Many [people] have also suggested buying the shirts for children in school as an opportunity spread a positive message among the students and help instill values.” Local support and feedback have been important, too. Originally from Snellville, the Shumates moved to Suwanee almost four years ago. "We moved to Suwanee in September of 2009 because we knew it would be a great place to raise a family,” Georgianna Shumate said. “Our friends in the community have been extremely supportive, from helping to spread our website on social media to wearing the shirts where they work and around town. It is exciting to hear the feedback they receive when someone sees the shirt." That positive response is something the Shumates hope that everyone takes away when they see one of their products. "However they might interpret it, we hope that it inspires a positive emotion and prompts that individual to pass that feeling along to those around them," Shumate added. How is the Suwanee Housing Market?
BY: Andrea Wright OF COLDWELL BANKER ave you been wondering what is going on with the Real Estate market in Suwanee? Are values really going up, and are houses really selling again? These are the right questions to be asking right now! Things are changing, and we are in the perfect location to see these changes. Yahoo! Finance conducted a study of the “Top 10 Moving Destinations in the U.S.” and Atlanta was the country’s most popular place to move to last year, Suwanee being third out of all the cities in Atlanta.
We know people are moving here, but what is going on with today’s housing market? ◆ Home prices bottomed out the first quarter of last year. ◆ New construction and resale homes are up year over year for 12 months straight. The last time that was true was back in 2006! ◆ The inventory of homes is so low, meaning that there are fewer homes on the market than back in the early 1990s when there were half the people living in Atlanta, 3.4 million, compared to today’s 6 million and counting! ◆ At the rate homes are selling, Gwinnett County’s supply of homes will be gone in 2.6 months. At the peak of the market in 2007, Gwinnett County had a six month supply of homes. This correlates to how fast homes are selling now, quite a few sell within three to four days of being listed, instead of the six to 12 months we saw in the past few years. What a huge market shift!

In addition, new home builders in Suwanee are seeing something they have never seen, an increase in sales during a time of year that is generally considered slow. For example, Baxley Ridge in Suwanee sold eight homes in February. The onsite agent, Dwayne Hanks, explained that he has been an onsite sales agent since 2003 and he has NEVER seen this many sales at this time of year before, and I have heard similar comments from a number of agents in the area.

o matter where a business owner decides to open and operate a business, some make it a point to get involved in the community where their business is located. Dick Cunningham, owner of Ippolito’s in Suwanee, is one of those business owners that choose to be involved. And it’s a two-way street. Cunningham credits Suwanee and the surrounding communities as a big part of the restaurant’s success. In fact, he likens the regular customers to an extended family, and said they feel blessed to have such enthusiastic support. Cunningham and his wife, Penny, opened Ippolito's in the Dean Taylor Kroger shopping plaza on Oct. 31, 2000. Cunningham said even though the initial restaurant location was not in the Suwanee city limits, they participated in all the community and Suwanee Day events. Then in January 2007, they relocated the restaurant to its current location at Town Chicken Francese Center in Suwanee. And while the Cunninghams reside in nearby Alpharetta, they are both active in the Suwanee community, where they spend most of their time. Founded by George and Toni Ippolito in 1989, Ippolito's Italian restaurant offers casual neighborhood dining in a friendly atmosphere and emphasizes excellent service, with a dedicated and experienced staff. Menu items include sandwiches, pizza, calzones, strombolis, and specialty chicken, veal and seafood dishes, all in healthy portions. They also offer a wide variety of wines and desserts, and carryout is available. Cunningham recalled when they opened in Suwanee, Toni Ippolito's father, Bill Simon, was there to welcome them. "Bill Simon was a resident of Suwanee and a neighbor of then-mayor, Nick Masino and his family,” Cunningham said. “Being a very enthusiastic resident of Suwanee and a big fan of Ippolito's, Bill persuaded Nick and Suzanne (the Masinos) to participate in our grand opening and cut the ribbon." Decorated in traditional Italian décor with the smell of garlic rolls and homemade sauces, the restaurant provides a comfortable and friendly, neighborhood restaurant feel. Patrons can dine inside or dine alfresco on the patio adjacent to Suwanee’s premier property, Town Center Park. Ippolito’s can also accommodate private parties.

Over the years, he said, they have been a member of the school board at Walnut Grove, Taylor Elementary and Creekland Middle School, for a total of five years of service. As graduates from the initial Suwanee Citizens Police Academy, the Cunninghams continue to lend their support to each graduating class. In addition, Ippolito's is a member of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and in July 2012, the business was honored as the chamber's Small Business of the Month. "We have been very fortunate to secure the support of the residents of Suwanee and the surrounding Gwinnett communities," said Cunningham. Rock 4 Robert Benefit Concert for North Gwinnett High School Graduate
n enthusiastic crowd of about 600 filled the North Gwinnett High School gymnasium on March 21 to show support for a Bulldog alum. “Rock 4 Robert,” a concert staged to benefit 2008 NGHS graduate Robert Pritchard, was headlined by country artist and North Gwinnett graduate, Andy Velo, and also featured American Idol contestant and current NGHS junior, Alexa Gilomen. Pritchard, who played football at North Gwinnett, suffered from seizures and a stroke last July and subsequently was diagnosed with a condition called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (or CVST), which is a rare form of stroke that results in a blood clot on the brain. Proceeds from the benefit go to help Pritchard with rising medical costs and expenses. "My idea was not just to raise money but to raise awareness, and let Robert and his mother, Natalie, know that the North Gwinnett community cared about and supported them," said community coach Mike O'Rouke, one of the event's organizers. And he knows Pritchard well, having coached him in youth football, too. O'Rouke credits one of the football team's trainers, Mackenzie Heck, who suggested last fall during one of the football team's Monday night Bible study meetings at Level
Creek United Methodist Church that the team should participate in a service project. While trying to decide what to do, the group saw an article in the local newspaper about Pritchard's condition. O'Rouke, who also owns Peach State Audio and has been associated with the music scene in Atlanta and the Southeast since 1976, decided to put the two together and hold a benefit concert. "I felt a concert could really pull the community together and show Robert how much he meant to us,” O’Rouke said. “Andy Velo, who is a North Gwinnett graduate, signed on immediately to perform. Once Live Event Solutions agreed to provide the stage, lights and sound, we were ready to move forward." O'Rouke said that between their sponsors, ticket sales and donations, they are pleased with the results, and that the support of the North Gwinnett community has been outstanding. "I can't say enough about the effort and support the school and its administration, the Touchdown Club, the football program, and the sponsors gave to make the concert for Robert a success." The Stroke Awareness Foundation is still accepting donations on Robert's behalf, and on July 13 they will be hosting a gala for Pritchard in Orlando, Florida. If boating is your summer recreation of choice, then you need to be aware of the new Boating Under the Influence (BUI) law set to go into effect on May 15, 2013. The Georgia Senate Bill 136 was approved by both the House and the Senate and was signed by Governor Deal at a ceremony at Holiday Marina on Lake Lanier in April. Everyone is still encouraged to have a good time while boating; however, the new law seeks to make it a safer experience for all ages. The “Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law” seeks to align the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for BUI and DUI. Previously, Georgia was one of the few states in America that had a higher BAC for boating (.10) verses driving (.08). Before, one could legally drink more while spending a day at the lake operating a vessel, yet once they got behind the wheel of a car or on a motorcycle they were legally intoxicated. Now, both charges have the same legal limit of .08 and have similar penalties. One can be charged with BUI if he or she is less safe
to operate a moving vessel due to the consumption of alcohol, drugs, or the intentional consumption of any glue, aerosol, or other toxic vapor. Also, one can be charged with a BUI if you have a BAC of .08 or more if over 21 years old or a BAC of .02 if under 21 years old at any time within 3 hours after operating a moving vessel. For a first BUI arrest, you can be charged with a misdemeanor punishable with a fine up to $1,000.00, jail time, community service, completion of a DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction program, subject to a clinical evaluation, and probation. Also, you can have your boating privileges revoked for a year. Being on the water is not the same as being on the road. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does not need a reason to stop you on the water. The DNR can perform safety checks at anytime without probable cause. However, it is not illegal to have an open container on a vessel nor is it illegal for a person operating a vessel to have a drink. Even though the presence of alcohol can lead to a more stringent safety check, it does not mean you are violating any laws. It is only a violation of the law, if you are over the legal limit. It is important to take into consideration there are other factors on the water, such as engine noise, heat, sun and waves, which can contribute to impairment when combined with the consumption of alcohol or drugs. To be on the safe side, try to plan ahead and take necessary precautions to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable day on the water. ■

Snap Suwanee Winning Photos Now on Display
The 2013 Snap Suwanee winning photographs are now on exhibit at Suwanee City Hall, 330 Town Center Avenue. Ten winning photographs were selected from among 66 entries received from 18 photographers. The annual exhibit includes photographs of Suwaneerelated people, places, and scenes. The 2013 Snap Suwanee exhibit will remain on display at least through the end of the year.
Suwanee's Super Incredibly Fun Race Returns to Town Center Park The City of Suwanee brought back its award-winning, super incredibly fun Super Incredible Race on April 20. The race is a scavenger-like hunt, a la Amazing Race meets small-town America in which teams of two or teams of family members receive a series of clues that require them to complete a variety of high-energy mental and physical challenges. During last year's event, contestants slurped spaghetti noodles, danced, raced on hippityhops, solved a multi-step math equation for which the answer was 30024, and told a joke, among other activities. The city extended the fun this year by The inaugural presenting its spring Suwanee's Super concert immediately Incredible Race following the race. was recognized as Departure, a Journey Best New Event tribute band, by the Southeast performed at Town Festival and Events Center. The concert Association. was free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, April 16, Chick-fil-a Race Series attended the Tuesday Night Big Peach run where it promoted their “Run with The Herd” Gwinnett Life Run benefitting the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett. The morning of March 5, 2013 was a special morning for Cindi Porter and her father, Bill Porter. Cindi Porter received official notification that she had been awarded the professional designation of Certified Financial Planner, and a few hours later, her father, Bill Porter, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at The George Washington University and officially became Dr. Bill Porter, CLU, ChFC. Cindi’s daughter Alexis, who was with her grandfather in Washington DC, received the good news from her mother in a text as they walked to the GWU campus for Bill’s dissertation defense. This father/daughter team of financial planners have worked as a team for the past 12 years at Aileron Investment Advisors, in Suwanee, Georgia, and they have also co-authored two books together: The New Rules and Tools for a Secure Retirement and 24 Investment Strategies.

Superheros Converge on "Hall of Justice" On Saturday, March 23rd, a number of Suwanee’s own superhero’s braved the weather for a photo shoot in front of The Hall of Justice (Suwanee City Hall). The photos are being used in the City’s new ad campaign, “100 Reasons to Love Suwanee”. The full list can be found on www.suwanee.com. One of the reasons is “Our City Hall really does look like the Hall of Justice”.
Local Group Brings Easter Joy to Children in Need Members of the Buford/North Gwinnett Rotary Club donated personal care items and candy (of course) for 24 Easter baskets to be given to youth currently residing at the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter. The shelter is a residential care facility that provides both long- and shortterm services to youth ages 12 to 21 who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, abandonment, or are in need of supervised care. A global community service organization, the Buford/North Gwinnett Rotary Club meets weekly at noon on Wednesdays at the Buford Community Center, 2200 Buford Highway.
Suwanee Author Asks “One Question”
As part of its ongoing, longterm efforts to improve the Suwanee Gateway, the City of Suwanee closed recently on a 3.4acre tract at 2955 LawrencevilleSuwanee Road. The property currently houses the former May Queen Hotel, which has been closed for approximately a year for safety reasons. The city purchased the property from First Intercontinental Bank for $1.25 million with immediate plans to demolish the dilapidated buildings, clean up the site, and land bank the property for the future. One of the top community goals identified through Suwanee’s 2020 Vision strategic plan, in which some 800 community members participated last year, is improving the Suwanee Gateway, the city’s oldest commercial area, developed largely in the 1960s and 1970s after I-85 was extended to Suwanee. Recent improvements in the Gateway include the opening of the new Suwanee police training facility, extension of McGinnis Ferry Road, the recently completed streetscaping project around the interstate interchange, opening of Movie Tavern, QT, and other businesses, development of Northolt Parkway, and construction of 335 apartment units.
On April 2nd, Suwanee resident and radio personality Ken Coleman hosted a book release party at Chateau Elan Winery & Resort. His Book, “One Question”, features a series of interview questions asked by Coleman. The book features “Life-changing answers from today’s leading voices.” Mark Burnett, creator of The Voice, Survivor and The Apprentice reviews the book, saying “Ken Coleman has a gift of asking the questions we should all be asking. One Question gets to the heart of the most important issues in our lives and taps into the wisdom of some of today’s most admired achievers.” Coleman can be heard on The Ken Coleman Show weekdays at 5-7pm on WDUN – AM 550/102.9 FM out of Gainesville.

Charity Basketball Game Raises Thousands for Injured Suwanee Police Officer BY: Amy Wilson arch Madness broke out at Lanier High School on March 15 when Suwanee police officers took on some Lanier High School teachers in a basketball game to help out a school resource officer injured while on the job. Officer Rolando Jimenez was seriously injured Feb. 13, when he was struck by a car while directing morning traffic. Suwanee police officer Rob McCoy wanted to help the family as Jimenez focuses on his long road to recovery. "I have worked in law enforcement for eleven years, and I have seen officers in financial need when hurt on the job," McCoy said. He added that the basketball game was inspired by the annual excitement of the NCAA basketball tournament.

Approximately 200 people attended the game, which included a charity raffle where they raised close to $8,000 to help the Jimenez family. "We were very pleased with the turnout with such short notice," McCoy said. And he attributed the night's success to the support of the Suwanee community, in particular the Suwanee businesses who donated items for the charity raffle. McCoy is currently planning a second event in conjunction with North Gwinnett High School, where Officer Jimenez also helped out from time to time. In the meantime, donations are being accepted on Officer Jimenez's behalf through the NobleHeroes Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that helps police, firefighters, and EMT personnel when they are injured or disabled. North Gwinnett Arts Association’s
isual and performing arts will be showcased at the fourth annual Arts in the Park celebration, which takes place 11:00 a.m. until 6 p.m. May 18 at Town Center Park in Suwanee. With artist demonstrations and live performances throughout the day, there will be plenty to see and do for everyone. This year's theme--Art Splash!--will lend a relaxed, funfilled beach atmosphere to the festivities. Take a break from the sun beneath an umbrella, say hello to Captain Jack and the Little Mermaid as they walk around the park entertaining guests while listening to beach-themed musical performances. As in previous years, booths will circle the park; thirty artists are currently set to participate, in addition to the live entertainment. A high school booth will feature artwork from young, talented artists, and there will be information about the North Gwinnett Arts Association's Student Art Scholarship Award. If you're feeling creative, there will be a community art project for the public to participate in as well. Arts in the Park is organized by the North Gwinnett Arts Association and is co-sponsored with the City of Suwanee with the purpose of celebrating local artists. "There’s nothing better than sharing the arts in a community that enjoys and appreciates what we do,” Vickie Johnson, president of the NGAA, said. “The fact that the City of Suwanee is so supportive of the arts plays a huge part in the growth and encouragement for all of the art forms in this community." The North Gwinnett Arts Association has more than one hundred active members and continues to grow. Membership Chair Brandy Posey also spoke about community.

"I have been with NGAA since July 2011 and have seen some amazing events and met some great artists,” Brandy Posey, membership chair for the organization said. “With every new member, I really try to stress the importance of arts in our community and how it’s important that we (NGAA members) interact with the community using our talents. An event like Arts in the Park is a great example." Among the types of visual arts represented will be painting, jewelry, elements-wood, metal, glass, pottery, and photography. Live performances will include music, magic, and acting. The Collins Hill Orchestra, James Erl Jones Band, Billy Jonas, and the Zephyr Brass Quartet are scheduled to perform. And don't miss the Zumba flash mob! There will also be several food and beverage vendors on hand, including Dunwoody Café, Taste Jamaica, Hobie Pop Kettle Korn, Jo Jo's Gourmet Lemonade, The Healthy Nut Food Truck, Big Boys' Smokin BBQ, Fatty's of Atlanta and more. ■

he weather is heating up and summer is rapidly approaching, so it’s time to start picking out the best beers to match this wonderful weather. Some of you might be afraid that all craft beers are heavy and not the best choice for being outdoors in the sun, and will turn to lighter mass-produced alternatives. We will discuss some lighter craft beer options and a few particular brands of each you should try next time you are looking to try something new!
Lagers and pilsners are great options for most seasons, and summer is no different. With most variations having a biscuitlike, malt profile and a crisp clean finish, these are “go to” beers for many patrons. Lagers and pilsners are meant to be enjoyed at a temperature between 39-45 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can drink these beers nice and cold without worrying about the loss of taste…great for a summer day. Some brands to consider are Brooklyn Lager, Lefthand Polestar Pilsner, Gaffel Kolsch, Great Divide Nomad and New Belgium Shift Pale Lager (available in cans!). If you are looking for a local craft beer option, the Red Hare Long Day Lager is a perfect fit and is available in cans. My favorite lager at the moment is the Brooklyn Lager, and my favorite pilsner at the moment is North Coast Brewing’s Scrimshaw Pilsner. Try these out and see if you agree!

Pale ales are another great option when you are reaching for a summer beer. I’m sure many of you have tried a Sweetwater 420 or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, so you are familiar with the style. If you aren’t, pale ales generally have a nice balance between hops and malt. Some are more citrus-like or piney and carry a bit of bitterness, and others you will find to be a little more on the malt-like side and have the hops f or more of a balancing act rather than a main component of the flavor profile. There are a huge variety of beers in this category and some definitely find themselves on the heavier side, probably a little more so than you are looking for on a warmer day so be careful. If you want to stick with a lighter pale ale try

and find one that has an ABV (alcohol content by volume) lower than 6 percent. Some brands to try: Great Divide Denver Pale Ale, Victory Brewing Headwaters Pale and 21st Amendment Bitter American, which is available in cans. For some local options, give Terrapin’s Rye Pale Ale or Wild Heaven’s Let There be Light a try. I have to admit, having gone to The University of Georgia in Athens, I am quite partial to Terrapin’s Rye Pale Ale – So if you haven’t tried that yet, you should give it a go!
Finally, we come to wheat beers in our short review of summer beers! As with pale ales, there is a large selection to choose from. Wheat beers are easy to drink, very refreshing, and typically don’t have flavors that will overwhelm your palate. Blue Moon is a great example of a summer wheat beer; it is wildly popular with its refreshing citrus-like flavor. It is hard to say no to a pint of Blue Moon adorned with a slice of orange on any day, much less a nice summer day. So to put a style to the name, Blue Moon is considered a Belgian-style Wheat beer. These typically have notes of orange peel, citrus, and coriander. If you like this particular style, try Avery White Rascal, Ommegang Witte, or my local favorite, Monday Night’s Fu Manbrew! If you are into more of a traditional German-style wheat beer that brings subtle notes of banana and clove you definitely need to try Weihenstephan Hefeweiss, Konig Ludwig Weissbier or Lagunitas Brewing’s A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale. American blonde ales are a variation of a wheat ale that came along with the rising of the American Craft Beer scene. Blondes are a little lighter and have a clean mouth feel with a touch of malt sweetness. Try out Atlanta’s own Red Brick Brewing Blonde ale if you are in the mood to try one!
Let this brief guide be only the beginning to your craft beer adventures this summer. Unfortunately we were only able to scratch the surface of these beers here, and it is up to you to go out and try these for yourself and see what best fits you!
