Welcome to the most widely read issue of the year! This issue focuses on Suwanee Day, a celebration of community.

Last year on Suwanee Day, I gave birth to our third son. I can’t believe he is almost one year old! That was a day I will never forget, and this year, I’m looking forward to being part of Suwanee Day. We will be unveiling our new Suwanee Magazine mascot, Sammy, at Suwanee Day. Be sure to stop by our booth to say hello and meet Sammy!

This issue features the Suwanee Day Guide, beginning on page 23 with a schedule of events, a map showing all the vendors and a preview to help you make the most of your Suwanee Day celebration.

Although summer is winding down and cooler weather is on the way, the heat is on with “Get Fit Suwanee” as the contestants push forward with regular meetings and group workouts! Be sure to check out their progress on page 10.

invest for growth or for income?

A:

It depends on which decade(s) you were invested.

Generally speaking, if you want to invest for growth you will choose the stock market. Historically it has offered higher returns – but also higher volatility - and thus more risk if you needed to get to some (or all) of your money.

For steadier returns, investing in bonds has been the choice for many who want a somewhat more predictable income.

In the decades of extended economic growth (1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and 1990s), the stock market has produced an overall better return for investors, although with perhaps more excitement than some prefer. In decades that saw depressions and recessions (1930s, 1970s and 2000s), income investors faired better than those who had aggressively banked on a growth strategy.

So what should we do now? While every investor is different and has unique circumstances, emotional risk tolerances, time horizons, tax implications, and existing portfolio considerations, the general answer is twofold.

First, looking forward, do you feel that the economy is in an upward or downward trend? If you think that you have a sense of the general market direction, invest accordingly.

Second, if you are not sure, you may want to hedge your bets and create a portfolio that includes both strategies, as well as other asset classes. Past trends are not guaranteed for the future.

Our problem today is the world has become so interconnected, unpredictable and explosive that it makes long-term trend predictions quite difficult. Bank rates are nearly zero, so we are forced to look elsewhere for reasonable places to invest.

Not only is the shop celebrating its two year anniversary and the opening of a second location in Oct. 2012 in Vickery Village in Cumming, but it’s now expanding to an online shopping option for pet owners to shop from the comfort of their own home.

Bob and Starla Pellegrino, owners of the pet boutique, have launched the new Pooch N Paws online store offering customers a wider selection of pet accessories and more.

“Our stores are just a sample of what can be found on our online store, where a customer can choose from over 2,000 items available in an assortment of sizes and colors,” Starla Pellegrino said. “Shop from your home in your pajamas and get exactly what you want for your pet delivered to your doorstep.”

While the online shopping experience is comfortable and convenient, it’s also easily accessed by visiting the store’s website, at poochnpaws.com and clicking the “Shop Pooch N Paws” button.

The Pellegrinos said they have enjoyed building relationships with their customers and seeing the pet owners enhance their connection with their pets.

SUWANEE GET FIT CHALLENGE

fter a busy summer where most of the contestants hit a plateau in their weight loss journey, we at Suwanee Magazine brainstormed on how to help get everyone back on track.

First, we had everyone re-read their original submissions for the competition. Reading over the reasons they had decided to make this commitment in the first place definitely hit home with the contestants.

Secondly, we decided to introduce a point system, encouraging a little friendly competition. Contestants are awarded points for activities that will ultimately help them to achieve their fitness goals. Points can be earned by working out, attending group workouts, running a 5K, blogging, posting workout photos on Facebook, and more. There have been several prizes along the way including free workouts at 9Round and Rainbow Pilates, SkyZone tickets, gift cards and more. We also announced that the Grand Prize winner (the contestant that loses the highest percentage of weight) will receive a romantic getaway at Chateau Elan, a makeover from Salon Greco, a platinum membership to Rainbow Pilates and more. The person with the most points will also receive a Chateau Elan retreat. Since the introduction of the point system, the contestants have been hitting the gym and workouts hard.

The contestants had some great group workouts that included a 9Round 30 minute workout, which is a combination of nine stations - most of which are boxing and kickboxing. The group also attended a Rainbow Pilates workout.

Contestants had the privilege of meeting and hearing personal accounts from Leah Fernandez and Jim Murphy, two people who have endured their own weight loss challenges and experienced success. Since February 2011 Fernandez has lost 116 lbs., and in the past year, Murphy has lost more than 150 lbs. Both Fernandez and Murphy shared how they made the decision to get healthy, what they did to lose the weight, and what they do today to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Michelle McShane has kept up a healthy diet and the scale is showing the results. Like the other contestants, McShane did not work out as much during the summer as she had hoped, but is now back on track regularly participating in group workouts, Big Peach Tuesday night runs and hitting the gym.

Bill King has had some setbacks including a back injury, but he is not giving up. He shared in a recent blog, “Weight loss is my fundamental need right now and it is my fundamental problem. Levi (King’s trainer) says, ‘You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet,’ and he is right.” Now King is doing better and continues to push forward with his workouts and nutrition goals.

Ginny Wurttemberg has had added challenges with Multiple Sclerosis flare ups. Wurttemberg in her blog wrote, “This flare has been worse than others because it affected my feet and legs. For the past two weeks, I have felt like I was walking around on pins and needles that had just come out of the fire. I also had some weakness in my left leg. When I have a flare, I am put on intravenous steroids for three days and receive more steroids than 15 medrol dose packs you get when you have bronchitis or a severe sinus infection. Then after those three days, my entire system crashes because my adrenal gland shuts down since it wasn’t needed while using the steroids. The crash is WORSE than the medication itself. I’m still trying to come back to normal.” But Wurttemberg is a trooper and said the exercise helps her MS, and she has been hitting the gym and running when she can.

Between her frequent and multiple workouts each day and number of blogs she posts, it’s hard to keep up!

In one of her recent blogs, she shares inspirational quotes and perhaps this quote sums up how far Desai has come in this challenge: “If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” - Bruce Lee. Desai is doing just that. She participated in the Skylar’s Run 5K Aug. 18, and beat her last 5K time in March by more than six minutes.

“With almost four months left in the challenge (YIKES), it’s time for me to step things up a bit. For the past three weeks, I have been doing a great job with the active part of losing weight. I have been making a conscious effort to schedule my workouts for at least four to five days a week; sometimes working out at least two times a day. As a result, I feel great, have increased energy and have recently noticed that my clothes are starting to fit a little looser.

However, the number on that scale has not moved significantly enough for me to claim total success. So this means it’s time for me to step things up a bit…no let me take that back…I need to significantly kick things into high gear. I already know who the culprit is – my diet is to blame for the slow decrease in weight. To help me identify where I am going wrong, I have decided to enlist the help of the app, Lose It!" Meet Beth Hilscher Interview with Suwanee’s Newest City Council Member BY: Tana Christian Suggs tana@suwaneemagazine.com

A

fter serving as a Suwanee City Council member for nearly 10 years, Jace Brooks resigned to run for Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, and as a result, Suwanee City Council welcomed new council member, Beth Hilscher, who ran unopposed, to her first meeting in July.

At Suwanee Magazine, we wanted to learn more about Suwanee’s newest council member, so here is a little more information about Hilscher, her family, and her plans for the community.

Hilscher is a practicing attorney with an office in Suwanee since 2000. She has been married for 15 years to her best friend, Steve, who works in medical supply sales. Their son, Ryan, is a sophomore at North Gwinnett High School, and will soon be an Eagle Scout. Their daughter Emily, 12, is a seventh grader at North Gwinnett Middle School and is a girl scout. Emily also plays soccer. Both children are active with the youth group at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church.

Suwanee Magazine: How long have you been a Suwanee resident? And what made you choose Suwanee?

Hilscher: I have lived in Suwanee for 13 + years. My husband and I knew we wanted to live in Gwinnett due to its highly regarded school system and we were just starting our family.

We feel fortunate that we landed here - we had no idea of how great of a community Suwanee would become.

SM: When and how did you get involved with the city of Suwanee and what compelled you to do so?

I am raising my family in Suwanee, I have a home in Suwanee, and I operate my business in Suwanee. I have benefited from all that Suwanee has had to offer for the past 13 + years, and now I want to do my part to make sure that Suwanee continues to be a wonderful place.

Hilscher: Shortly after moving my office to Main Street, I became involved in the Downtown Development Authority. Naturally, I was interested in the economic vitality of the downtown area.

Serving on the DDA has been a good stepping stone to becoming more involved in the community.

SM: What made you decide to join the Suwanee City Council?

Hilscher: I have considered running for Suwanee City Council for the past few years; however, in previous years, I felt I had too much on my plate to take on the role effectively. In addition to building my law practice and serving on various business and civic organizations, I served on the PTA, the Homeowners Association Board and coached youth soccer. Last spring, I completed Leadership Gwinnett and am no longer involved with some of my previous activities, so the time seemed to be right.

More importantly, I feel like my children are now at good ages.

We discussed the commitment as a family and the decision was made with my family’s full support.

SM: What do you think is your greatest strength that you bring to the council?

Hilscher: I would say the greatest strength I bring to city council is the fact I am fully invested in the community. I am raising my family in Suwanee, I have a home in Suwanee, and I operate my business in Suwanee. I have benefited from all that Suwanee has had to offer for the past 13 + years, and now I want to do my part to make sure that Suwanee continues to be a wonderful place.

SM: What would you like to accomplish as a member of Suwanee City Council?

Hilscher: My first priority is to serve honestly, with common sense, and with fiscal responsibility. One thing I would like to see completed is the establishment of a nonrestrictive, National Historic District Registry in the old town area giving property owners within that district potential tax incentives for rehabilitating and improving their historic properties. It is an endeavor that was initiated last winter and was supported by the DDA. The application is now pending approval. Additionally, like many of my neighbors who voiced their opinion through the 20/20 Strategic Vision planning process, I would also like to see continued improvements made along the I-85 gateway area in order to ensure the entrance to our city is safe and aesthetically pleasing so as to attract new business and spur economic growth in our community.

SM: Suwanee's motto is Live, Work and Play. What are a couple of your favorite things about Suwanee and how do you spend your leisure time?

Hilscher: Living in Ruby Forest, we are fortunate we have easy access to Suwanee Parks without getting in our cars. We love to cycle or walk our dogs on the trails at George Pierce Park to access the Suwanee Greenway or Town Center Park. And of course, we take part in many of the fabulous events held at Town Center Park.

The 68th annual Miss Georgia Pageant has crowned Leighton Jordan, Miss Capital City, as Miss Georgia 2012 on June 23.

She is the daughter of Jim and Clemmie Jordan of Suwanee.

For her talent, Jordan, a 19-year-old resident of Suwanee, Ga., performed a ballet en pointe to David Watch Garrett’s "He’s a Pirate."

Leighton Jordan Jordan was among in the the 33 contestants Miss America competing in the Miss Pageant Georgia Pageant this year. She attends in Las Vegas Georgia State University where she January 2013! has maintained a 4.0 GPA and plans to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing to become a Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner.

In addition to the opportunity to represent Georgia in the Miss America Competition, the new Miss Georgia will receive prizes including a $15,000 cash scholarship, jewelry, wardrobe for the Miss America Pageant and a vehicle provided by Kia for her use as she travels the state throughout her year of service.

While traveling the state promoting her platform, “The Sibling Support Project: Encouraging Special needs Children and Their Siblings,” she will be preparing for the Miss America Pageant to be held in Las Vegas in January 2013.

Vertical Horizon Rocks Town Center Park at the 2012 annual summer concert

Area residents were treated to a summer concert featuring alternative rock band Vertical Horizon Aug. 11 at Town Center Park. The band took the stage and played some of their familiar hits such as, "Everything You Want" from the 1999 Everything You Want album, which eventually went double platinum, selling more than 2 million copies. The band's most recent album is 2009's "Burning the Days."

Area residents got the opportunity to see perhaps some of their favorite Disney characters up close and personal including Ariel, Prince Eric, Sebastian and evil Ursula on July 27 and 28 as the 2012 Broadway in the Park cast and crew performed Disney’s “Little Mermaid Jr.,” for Suwanee Performing Arts' annual summer performance and fundraiser. An original one-act play, Filligan's Island, a take on the popular 1960s television series Gilligan's Island, opened the event each evening.

Jim Ellis breaks ground on new Buick GMC location in Buford Jim Ellis Buick GMC Mall of Georgia celebrated a groundbreaking at 3612 Buford Hwy in Buford, GA on August 15. Its new and larger state-of-the-art 55,000 square foot facility will sit on 12 acres.

Mark Frost, vice president of GM Brands, explained that when acquiring the Buick GMC franchise two years ago, Jim Ellis leased the current facility from the previous owner.

“The current facility is decades old and is inadequately suited to meet the needs of consumers in today's retail environment,” Frost said. “The new facility will be a significant upgrade, befitting of the premium/luxury image of the Buick and GMC brands and will afford Jim Ellis customers the latest in comfort and convenience in sales, service, and parts."

The new facility is scheduled to open in mid-2013.

Kyle Maynard Wins ESPY- for the 2nd time!

Suwanee native, Kyle Maynard, recently won the 2012 ESPY award for Best Male Athlete with a Disability. The award is given out annually by ESPN for sports excellence. He was chosen after his successful climb to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in January, being the first quadruple amputee to get to the top without assistance. Maynard climbed with a team of wounded veterans, friends and professional climbers.

Summer Mission Trips During the summer, students take a much needed break from the classroom. It’s a time for students to rest and relax after months of the daily grind of school. Also during that time, many students opt to do something meaningful and to take part in an experience of a lifetime.

Many Peachtree Ridge, North Gwinnett and Greater Atlanta Christian High School students spent several months to train, and this summer, took part in Sugarloaf Missions, a Student Mission Group that is part of Sugarloaf United Methodist Church in Duluth.

There were four levels of mission trips: Level one went to Newport, Tenn. and Savannah, Ga. Level two went to New Orleans, Philadelphia and Rosarito, Mexico. Level three went to Costa Rica and Panama. Level 4 went to Peru and Cambodia.

Students who went to Peru worked with a missions organization called Frontline Peru, spending one week in the capital city of Lima working in the area of Pachacutec, and then one week in the Amazon jungle in the city of Pucallpa holding Vacation Bible Schools, youth outreach programs, orphanage visitation and other special construction projects to show God’s love in real and practical ways.

The Latest From The Suwanee Art World

Anita Stewart

I

asked Anita Stewart, a local artist and Suwanee resident, why she decided to go into art as a profession.

Having made her decision as a teenager, one might consider her answer typical coming from a young person.

“When I was in high school my dad said, ‘Whatever you do, don’t' go into art,’ Stewart said.

“That's all it took.”

Later when Stewart was in college, one of her professors told her ‘most art teachers are not good artists and most artists are not good art teachers,’ and that's when she said she decided to “take up the baton to do both.” While in college at the University of Memphis, Stewart majored in fine art and minored in education.

Since then she taught art in the 1970s in downtown Memphis and in Memphis City Schools at the Junior High School level. Through the years her own art has transformed from her first art lessons taken at a nearby YMCA that emphasized realism to giving herself permission to "not capture subjects in complete realism."

In recent years, she has been delving into sculpting, both real and fantasy. And many may have noticed Stewart and the “bird woman” she created with recycled materials as result of a trip she took to South Africa in 2007 around the area at various local festivals and events.

Stewart is an active member in many artists groups in the area, and her artwork has been displayed at many local venues including Hudgen’s Center Museum. She has received numerous awards for her work, and the once shy child and self-described, high school wallflower is now comfortable speaking to audiences about her art and traveling to foreign countries to paint.

“I love it,” she said. “I have gone from traveling from Duluth to Buford to be part of the art scene, to joining artists from South Africa to paint in Italy. It is so challenging and has made a huge difference in my paintings. I thrive in the contrast. My last travel and paint adventure was this past December to Ecuador and Peru. I loved visiting Machu Picchu and the adventure just to get to a place by myself that can only be reached by train.”

But when it comes to art, there’s no place like Suwanee.

“I love living in a city that values art,” Stewart said, adding that she will always remember Nick Masino in one of his last presentations as mayor when he remarked, ‘a city is only as good as its art.’ “Wow!” she said.

About 14 years ago, Stewart opened a local art school in a small 20 x 20 space. Recently she relocated the school, aptly named Anita’s ArtsCool, to 4264 Sudderth Rd. in nearby Buford, the school’s third location, and she shares the space with Peace, Love & Pottery.

She said she thinks her school and Peace, Love & Pottery make a good combination.

“It has been educating to us as well to see the public wrap their heads around a new concept of fine art classes and a pottery/paint combination in the same space,” she said. “Many folks walk in the door just out of curiosity.”

Anita’s ArtsCool will hold a Homecoming event at the new location on Sept. 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for all students, artists and friends who have been involved with Anita’s ArtsCool and/or Buford School of Art. “We want to reach as many folks as possible to have them tour our new facility and help us celebrate art,” she said.

“ I love living in a city that values art.”
