a note from our managing editor
Many Suwanee residents claim that the start of Spring is marked for them by one popular event: Suwanee Beer Fest! Suwanee Beer Fest takes place during St. Paddy’s weekend each year and returns to Suwanee Town Center Park on Saturday, March 18th. Flip to page 55 to check out the Beer Fest Guide and what to expect at the 7th annual event this year. With over 300 craft beers, ciders, wine and more – there is something to please the most novice of beer-drinkers to the most die-hard beer snobs in the area. Suwanee Beer Fest prides itself on offering local favorites along with exclusive, hard-to-find, or not-yet-released-to-public beers. But, for those that aren’t in it for the beer, this is a festival you still don’t want to miss: awesome food trucks, Irish dancers, bagpipe players, food samples, live music, cornhole, giant Jenga and a mechanical bulldog are just a few items on the agenda. When I think of Spring, I think of warmer weather, festivals and… spring cleaning (not my fave,) which is why I’m particularly excited about the brand new Home Beautification Guide on page 22. If you’re like me then you’ll be excited to find local, home improvement professionals that you can outsource your landscaping, painting, remodeling and even re-decorating jobs. Amidst the guides you’ll also find some great features, including a funny, firsthand experience at Wild Animal Safari on page 12, all about the Gwinnett Braves on page Does your mom deserve a day of 51, and of course, our annual Cutest pampering, shopping and relaxation? WILD ANIMAL SAFARI About two hours south of Suwanee in Pine Mountain, Georgia, Wild Animal Safari is a 500 acre drive-through animal park, that lets you get face-to-face with over 650 animals from all over the world. STORY AND PHOTOS BY: ANGELA VEUGELER
11
ne Friday in February when school was closed, my family and I took the opportunity to visit Wild Animal Safari, in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Once we arrived at the 500-acre park, we opted to take one of Wild Animal Safari’s zebra minivans, available to rent for $22, rather than our own vehicle. Our three boys piled into the zebra van and we headed toward the front gate of the Serengeti Adventure, the drivethrough safari-like experience. After the two-hour drive to Pine Mountain, we were ready to see some animals!
Armed with eight bags of food, right after crossing the gate, we were greeted by several Emu. With their sharp beaks, and heeding the advice of park staff, we decided we had better not hand feed them and set a couple of pieces of food on the van window. They quickly grabbed them, and immediately afterward, Elk, Axis Deer, Fallow Deer, PotBellied Pigs and other species of animals swarmed our van. The Elk and other animals stuck their heads

TIPS FOR ENJOYING YOUR DAY AT WILD ANIMAL SAFARI:
1
Wild Animal Safari lets you get up close and personal with aninals you can usually only see from a distance.
Get there early when the animals are hungriest.
2 Buy plenty of food to feed the animals
(available when purchasing tickets).

right in the windows and ate food out of our hands (luckily there were a few metal bars to prevent the animals heads from getting all the way into the vehicle). All of us were wide-eyed and laughing with excitement. We literally sat in that spot right at the entrance for a good 15 minutes, having so much fun feeding and observing all of the different animals that were coming up. We started forward and were greeted by a group of Mouflon Sheep. These animals wanted the food so badly, they were standing on their hind legs, resting their front hooves against the van. Again, all sorts of animals that had been laying in the field or grazing in the distance came over to see if they could get a hand-out.

3 Rent a Zebra Minivan or take the bus when it’s available.
4 Bring towels or wipes and hand sanitizer.
5 Plan to spend about 2 1/2 to 3 hours at the park.

The next stop was the giraffes, Rose and Too Tall. My husband pulled the van up next to where they were housed. Once they saw us, they crossed the pasture toward us. These beautiful, giant animals came right up to the van, stuck their heads in as much as they could with the bars on the windows, and reached their long tongues in to grab the food. We all had the opportunity to pet them, feed them, appreciate their beauty and get slobbered on by them. We stayed to enjoy them for a good while and eventually started forward. As we pulled away, about 30 animals trotted after us. The rest of the 3-1/2-mile ride was just as exciting, with Pot-Bellied Pigs running next to the van, American Bison, Texas Longhorn, Ostrich, Zebra, Nilgai, Gaur and more coming right up to the vehicle and letting us feed them. We were able to pet them, feed them, take lots of pictures and videos and get a lot of excitement and laughs out of the experience. After the ride, we strolled through the Walkabout, which was more like a traditional zoo. There were baboons, kangaroo, tortoises, peacocks, singing dogs (yes, they actually sing), tigers and more. One of the highlights was getting to see the parks eight-week-old Liger, Nika. A Liger is a cross between a male lion

and female tiger. Nika came to Wild Animal Safari from North Carolina and will soon be a companion to Athena, a white tiger that is about six months older. She will be available for viewings on weekends in March. Wild Animal Safari was founded in 1991 by Ron Snider, who wanted to create a place where people could get up close and personal with the types of animals many folks never get to experience. One of the goals in the creation of the park was to be a reasonably priced attraction, allowing proper care of the animals and grounds and helping children to gain a lifelong love of animals and nature. Wild Animal Safari also has a café and gift shop. The park was purchased 11 years ago and the new owners have upgraded the grounds, acquired new animals and worked to enhance guests’ experience. Wild Animal Safari has consistently been rated one of the top drive-through animal parks in the country. According to General Manager, Mike Newman, “People are here to have a good time; we are here to assist them in having a good time.” With over 650 total animals and 75 different species, some threatened or endangered, there were plenty that we had never seen before. All of my kids rated the experience a “10” (and they are tough critics!). It was incredible! Well worth the drive, and a fun family day that we will treasure forever! TEEING UP FOR CHARITY By: JULIE PERDUE PRESIDENT, SUWANEE BUSINESS ALLIANCE n April 25th, 2017, Suwanee Business Alliance will host its 16th annual golf tournament held at Bears Best in Suwanee. This is an awesome course and we are looking for corporate sponsors, players, hole sponsors, volunteers and anyone wanting to lend a hand and have a
blast teeing up and raising money for local charities! All proceeds will go to local charities throughout the year. There will be amazing door prizes, a putting contest, longest ball and awards. There will even be a Professional Long Drive Hitter hitting tee shots on a par 5. He can hit 400 yards – more than most pro golfers! The fee includes breakfast and lunch after the tournament. There is no rain allowed! Visit our next meeting on March 8th from 6-8 pm at American Redemption in Suwanee for details or sign up at suwanee.org. APRIL Invite friends, co-workers and associates for one of the best golf tournaments of the year and SBA's only fundraiser of the year. If you haven’t played this tournament before then you’ve missed out on a great day! Statistically, 94% of our players cannot honestly call themselves “golfers”. Our “best ball” format basically means that one of the people in your foursome has to be able to actually hit the ball, not necessarily far, not necessarily well and onto the fairway. So don’t be intimated by those real golfers out there. But we are serious about having fun, networking and raising money for charities and families in need in our community. We need you. Let’s make this our biggest tournament yet! ■

INVESTMENT
Strategies
grow
BY: Bill and Cindi Porter, AILERON INVESTMENT ADVISORS
What has been driving the stock market surge over the past few years? Multiple factors, but a few of them are very noteworthy for investors. First, when the 2008 recession took hold, many companies thinned out their employee rolls and reduced their labor expense significantly. Since 2009, hiring levels have remained tepid at best. Companies have remained lean and mean. Employee costs have remained lower than normal and thus, the bottom lines have been more profitable. This, however, is no longer an area offering any meaningful additional future savings. Second, the cost of money has been historically cheap for the past eight years. The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates (the cost of money) at nearly zero. Now that the election is over, the Fed has already raised rates once and has announced that more rate increases will follow. Along with lower labor costs over the past eight years, businesses have also been benefiting from lower costs for borrowed capital. Correcting the manipulation of interest rates since 2008 will eliminate a factor that has been artificially helping fuel corporate profits. Third, and perhaps the most important factor, is that instead of investing into research and development, new factories, or facilities, many companies have instead used their capital funds to purchase shares of their own outstanding stock. The Wall Street Journal reported on December 27, 2016 that from 2009 – 2016, S&P 500 companies have poured over $3.24 trillion into stock repurchases. THAT amount of internal buying has driven up stock prices significantly: much more than new profits, new products, or new processes. These three factors and others have contributed to a recent era when the economy struggled but the stock market roared. A new president, a new era, and a hard to predict economic future may suggest that you should have a serious discussion with your trusted advisor about your investment strategies. ■

MAR K ETIN G TIPS FROM VEUGELER DESIGN GROUP
Why You Should be Using Social Media for Your Business By: PRISCILLA SALMASI AND SHAY HARBAUGH, Veugeler Design Group
Facebook and Instagram are making it easier for people to manage their social media accounts right from their phone, with the ability to swap between business and personal accounts with a click of a button. Recently a small business owner asked us if it was necessary for her to create business pages since she already has so many friends and followers on her personal page. In short, the answer is yes. It is extremely important to have separate accounts – but to also be cognizant of the fact that even on your personal page you are still representing your company’s brand.
3 reasons to use Facebook and Instagram for business:
Targeted Advertising FACEBOOK: If you use a Facebook Page, you can reach more people who like your page and friends of those fans who like your page through Promoted Posts. You can create highly targeted ads based on interests, buying habits, behaviors, demographics and more. Facebook advertising has gotten more complex over the years and now includes re-targeting options so that your ads reach customers who have already visited or shown interest in your website.
Note: Instagram business pages are new! If you already have an Instagram page set up for your company, just make sure that you click “switch to business profile” in your account settings so that you can benefit from its new features.
INSTAGRAM: Since Instagram is owned by Facebook, you’ll need to link your Facebook Business Page to your Instagram account. Like Facebook, you will have the ability to create specific audiences for your ad based on location and interests. Choose from objectives such as “clicks to your website,” “app installs” and “video views,” then add a call-to-action button such as “Learn More,” “Shop Now” or “Contact Us.” You can easily create ads within the Instagram app, or if you’re more familiar with Facebook Ads manager, create an ad on Facebook that will also push to Instagram.

Insights and Analytics FACEBOOK: This might be the biggest reason to setup a Facebook Business page because the information you can gather about customers and potential clients is invaluable. “Facebook Insights” gives you metrics about your page’s performance and analyzes which posts have the most engagement, shares, views and impressions. Also, Facebook offers you specific information about your audience beyond basic demographics – such as what day and time your audience is most active on Facebook – so you can schedule posts when they are more likely to see them.
Connect with your audience
INSTAGRAM:
Being relatively new to the game, Instagram Insights doesn’t offer quite as many frills as Facebook, yet it’s a convenient way for you to get a quick look at how Instagram content is working for you and a look at your audience’s demographics, including top posts, audience’s age and location, and the average times followers are on Instagram each day.
.
FACEBOOK: Export your Facebook insights to see how your content performed over the course of specific time periods.
your on
When you set up a business page, your page has a category and options to include information such as a list of services, a shop button, special offers, reviews and more. Make sure you quickly respond to customer’s posts, direct messages and inquiries because Facebook will display your average response time (ie: this company typically replies to messages within five hours.)
INSTAGRAM: Now that Instagram business profiles are available, followers can engage with a business within the Instagram app. Once you complete your business profile information, a contact button will appear in the profile. This allows users to simply choose options to email, call or find your business location on a map, directly through the app.
With so much data being made available to businesses, social media gives you the opportunity to connect with current and potential customers more than ever before. You can still use your personal social media accounts to your advantage by being seen as a thought leader in your industry and showcasing your work and passion for what you do. This builds credibility for your business because after all, potential customers know that a company is only as good as the employees within it. So make sure that both you and your employees are representing your company well across all of their social accounts. ■ For more information about managing your Facebook and Instagram pages, please contact Veugeler Design Group

That level of professionalism might be due, in part, to Szcesniak’s 20-year career history as a consultant for IBM. About fifteen years ago Szcesniak inadvertently made a

A "modular block retaining wall system" with a series of steps and over landings. This application serves a dual purpose: first to obviously serve as the main entry way to the home, and secondly to preserve the sloped front yard. Modular block is much more aesthetically pleasing than a timber wall system and is often the preferred design for the front of a home in order to provide function and curb appeal.

Landscaping and gardening were Szcesniak’s hobbies and stress relievers. “I’d be on a business trip in Europe for two weeks, get out of a limousine when I got home, and be in cutoff jeans and a t-shirt working in the backyard an hour later,” he explained. Upon finding out that in the state of Georgia you can go back to college for free when you’re 50 years old, he decided to just take classes for fun. “But lo and behold, I was really good at it!” he said. So, what started as a part-time gig, mainly working on friends and neighbor’s yards, eventually turned into Georgian Landscape Design as we know it today. North Georgia Landscape Management was created in a bit more calculated approach, but By using a pondless application, such as with this 22-foot pondless waterfall, you can reduce the not without risk. amount of maintenance involved and the amount Jeremy Talboy of mosquitoes in the summer months. took a chance and dove headfirst into this industry, starting his company the day after he graduated college. to be a history teacher and baseball coach, but in true entrepreneurial spirit, wanted to create a business that he could build from the bottom up. “I just didn’t want to be in an office, I wanted to be active and be outside, so I bought a truck and a bunch of equipment and started out by just cutting people’s lawns,” he said. Talboy’s business has since come a long way from its grassroots approach (pun intended). From ongoing lawn maintenance to stonework, patios, waterfalls, ponds, fire pits, fountains, pool design, fencing, gardening and even carports, there’s nothing in the outdoor landscape world that they don’t do. Talboy and Sceszniak are both proud to call Suwanee home. “This is the 17th place that I’ve lived since college because my former job moved us around a lot, but I’ve never lived in a community that was just this easy to live in, to work in and play in. People are just friendly and really want to help make other people in Suwanee successful,” Sceszniak said. Talboy, who grew up in the area, said, “It’s really cool that I’ve been able to do a lot of work for friends and places that I’ve been driving by for 20 years and now have the contract there.” Sceszniak and Talboy both work under the premise of “under-promising and over-delivering.” And with more reviews, globally, on Houzz.com than anybody else in their industry, that motto seems to resonate with their customers. “Most importantly,” said Sceszniak, “We have fun out there! You have to have a sense of humor to work with us!” ■

MANAGING ALLERGIES Allergic rhinitis is a common
condition where exposure to certain environmental substances causes an immune mediated reaction in the nose and upper airway. Symptoms include itching of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, watery eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, clear runny nose, postnasal drip and cough. Allergens can occur seasonally (tree, grass, and weed pollens) or throughout the year (dust, mold, and cat or dog dander). Allergy sufferers may experience fatigue and miss time from Suwanee ENT offers a variety work or school of effective due to worsening treatment options symptoms. for eliminating allergy symptoms
35
WAYS TO TREAT YOUR ALLERGIES BY: MATTHEW T. GILL, MD SUWANEE ENT
AVOIDANCE
■ The first step to treating allergies is to avoid, when possible, the offending allergen. This is difficult to do with pollens, especially when the pollen count outside is very high. Consider avoiding outdoor activities in the early morning when pollen counts are highest and on especially dry and windy days. For people with grass allergies that need to do lawn work, they may wear a mask while mowing and then immediately shower and change clothes after coming inside. Fortunately, there are concrete steps that can be taken to mitigate exposure to dust and mold at home. These include frequent laundering of bed linens in hot water, use of dust resistant mattress and pillow covers, and purchasing a HEPA filter for the bedroom. The home should be inspected for possible sources of mildew or mold. Overlooked areas include potted plants and refrigerator drip pans which can harbor mold.
MEDICATIONS ■ There are several different types of
allergy medications available, most of which are now available over the counter. The most commonly used are anti-histamines and nasal steroid sprays. Taken regularly, in combination, these can provide significant symptomatic relief. Anti-histamines work quickly and are most effective at combating the symptoms of itching and sneezing. Nasal steroids reduce the inflammatory response in the tissues lining the nose but can take up to a month of regular use to achieve maximal effect. If you have significant pollen allergies you should begin using a nasal steroid spray for several weeks before the start of pollen season. Saline sprays or irrigations (i.e. Neti Pot) help to flush out inhaled allergens as well as the copious secretions the nose produces in response to allergen exposure. Regular use of a saline irrigation can significantly improve allergy symptoms of congestion and postnasal drip.
IMMUNOTHERAPY ■ For patients with persistent symptoms,
despite appropriate allergen avoidance and medications, or who are tired of frequent medication use, immunotherapy (i.e. allergy shots or drops) provides another level of treatment. This gets to the root cause of allergies by modulating or re-training the immune system so that it no longer produces an undesired response to allergens. Immunotherapy builds a person’s tolerance to the allergens by frequent exposure to the offending allergens in a step-wise and controlled manner. This may require significant time and effort on the patient’s part but can lead to better long-term relief.
Nasal allergies can frequently lead to other problems including middle ear infections, sinusitis, hoarseness, and asthma exacerbations. If allergy symptoms are negatively affecting your quality of life or leading to other complications you should seek help from a physician. Though pollen season can be an unpleasant part of living in the Southeast, fortunately there are a variety of effective treatment options available.

A: Just because a vet is conveniently located
or has sent you a coupon, does not always make them the best. A good way to find a reputable veterinarian is to ask people who have the same approach to pet care as you. Start with a recommendation from a friend, neighbor, animal shelter worker, dog trainer, groomer, kennel employee, or pet sitter. Another way to find a great vet that practices high quality medicine is to search for an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited hospital in your area. The Overlooked Trait that Kids Need to be Successful: RESILIENCY Resiliency can be a game-changer for kids and can change the way they see disappointments and challenges completely. Resiliency is often an overlooked trait, but when kids are resilient they can better cope, and even thrive, when life gets hard. Kids who are resilient can easily develop strengths, hone in on new skills, and successfully handle the challenges of life.
o your kids have what they need to be successful? Like most parents, you want to see your kids get the grade, win the game, learn the skill, and feel proud of themselves. You often willingly make a lot of sacrifices: sleep, time with friends, and time away from work so your kids have the opportunities to reach and maintain success in a lot of areas. You support them as they navigate school, extracurricular activities and friendships. You guide them through making tough choices and cheer them on as they make strides on their own. Regardless of how much support you give your kids, there will still be times when they face disappointments and hardships. But, is there a way to help your kids navigate challenges and disappointments and have more opportunities to feel successful?
Building a sense of character ■ Kids need to learn a fundamental sense of right and wrong to set them up to make wise choices in the future. Resilient kids who have a strong sense of their own values are better able to stick to them when times get tough or when others question them. Think about what values you hold as true and universal. Model them for your children and find ways to speak about them in regular conversations.
your child's competence by allowing them to try new skills at home in a loving and warm environment. Talk with them about how to solve issues with friends or siblings instead of giving advice right away. Allow them to try new activities or household chores. Help them learn from mistakes and explore how they could handle things in the future. Competence, over time, builds confidence and their ability to handle difficult situations in the future.
Help your kids build competence and confidence. ■ Competence is the ability to know how to handle situations effectively and trust your judgment. Build

The game of baseball is as iconic to American culture as the tailgating, family & friends-filled, food & drink-fueled days that accompany it. We are lucky here in Gwinnett. Not only are we in close proximity to our professional team: the Atlanta Braves, but we get to watch the Braves’ rising stars play right here in our own backyard! - Rachel Pillow
he Gwinnett Braves are a Triple-A Minor League Baseball (MiLB) team affiliated with the Atlanta Braves – at any given moment throughout the season, future or current MLB stars decorate their roster. You may recognize a few former Gwinnett Braves names, including Freddie Freeman who won the International League Rookie of the Year while playing for the Gwinnett Braves in 2010, Julio Teherán who was named the International League’s 2011 Most Valuable Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, along with Jason Heyward, Craig Kimbrel, Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, to name a few. It can be really fun to follow a player’s journey as they work their way through the ranks. The Gwinnett
Braves players have put in years and years of extremely hard work and dedication to the sport and are on (hopefully) their “last stop” before the Major Leagues. Fans have a unique chance to make meaningful connections with players, a chance to support them and say, “I knew them back when.” And the energy inside the stadium is contagious. From the smell of popcorn and peanuts, to the sound of bats cracking, to the ridiculous (yet oh so amusing) promo contests between innings, the Star Spangled Banner, pre and post-game concerts, fireworks displays and the beloved mascot, Chopper, taking photos with kids... there’s just something special about being at a baseball game, and the atmosphere at Coolray Field does not disappoint. Gwinnett Braves games are convenient,

affordable, safe and fun. Aside from the obvious entertainment (the game on the field) they have attractions and accommodations suitable for every age group, including inflatables and games in the “kids corner,” delicious concessions, private suites and entertainment rooms, the Home Plate Club with an allyou-can-eat buffet, and more. “We want you to feel welcome here and know you can come out here and have a good time,” said North Johnson, Gwinnett Braves General Manager. The fan experience at a MiLB game is unlike any other. “At a professional football or basketball game there’s not a lot of conversation and you don’t get up from your North Johnson, Gwinnett seats because the plays are all Braves General Manager. rushed. Here, it’s a completely different dynamic on the field and in the stadium: you can get up and walk around the concourse or berm, spend time hanging out with friends while still being able to stay tuned into the game,” explained Johnson.
Niekro’s Bar and Restaurant › It's all about the customer experience in the newly renovated craft beer bar: Niekro’s. Named after former MLB Hall of Fame Pitcher and Gwinnett Braves superfan, Phil Niekro (aka Knucksie), the Niekro’s bar and restaurant is located on the main concourse and is home of the famous “Knucksie Sandwich.” Garden and Gun Magazine featured the sandwich as one of South’s best ballpark delicacies and described it as: “an open-faced barbecue sandwich built atop a slice of cornbread. Pulled pork is layered with pickles, coleslaw, and, in a compromise between Georgia’s two competing styles, both mustard-based and sweet red barbecue sauces.” With delicious food already being a star of the show, Niekro’s now hopes to hold some rank amongst craft beer aficionados in the area. “Our focus is going to be local or regional craft beer – I want there to be beers that people can’t easily get anywhere else,” said Johnson. Their vision for Niekro’s also includes making it a destination on non-game days and a one-of-a-kind spot that people can rent out for private parties. The 2017 season kicks off on Thursday, April 6th at a home game versus the Durham Bulls with a fireworks show after the game. Season ticket packages are on sale now and pre-sale tickets start on March 11th. Last year the Gwinnett Braves were the International League’s South Division Champions, and with a few returning players on the roster, plus some hyped newbies, we are anxious to see if they can bring home the Championship in 2017, too! ■

BENEFITING COOPER’S CREW vent organizers are dedicated to giving back and supporting the community, and as tradition holds, will donate a large portion of proceeds to local charities. This year’s benefiting organization is Cooper’s Crew. Volunteers from Coopers Crew have generously donated their time to volunteer at the festival and are excited about giving back to a cause they hold dear to their hearts: ■ Cooper’s Crew is a Suwanee-based organization that was created in honor of Cooper O’Brien, who lost his battle to a rare form of cancer called Clear Cell Sarcoma at the young age of 14. Cooper will forever be remembered as an inspirational, courageous, generous, athletic and adventurous young man. Your participation in Suwanee Beer Fest helps support the Cooper’s Crew Fund and the Cooper O’Brien Scholarship Fund. The Cooper’s Crew Fund provides funding for research and development to find a cure for childhood cancer. Did you know that only 4% of U.S. federal funding is allocated to any type of childhood cancer research? Cooper’s Crew is committed to changing that number and has collaborated with CURE Childhood Cancer to help fund research projects specific to Sarcoma cancers. The Cooper O’Brien Scholarship Fund grants scholarships to three graduating seniors at North Gwinnett High School each year, who have overcome unique hardships. Please join us in raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer and to celebrate Cooper’s legacy. For more information on Cooper's Crew, visit CoopersCrew.org.

W H AT ’S B R E W I N G Maximizing Your Beer Festival Experience Derrick Atkinson, Taproom Manager of Jekyll Brewing offers strategies for upgrading your beer adventures during “drinking season” It’s pretzel necklace time! Beer festivals are a great opportunity for newbies to try something new and they are enticing to beer nerds as a chance to really explore favorite styles or brands. It’s an exciting environment to essentially be surrounded by 100+ tap takeovers. But, to fully take advantage, you need a plan to really tackle it the right way... ■
DON'T FORGET THE H20 ■ First tip, don’t forget the usefulness of water! As we roll into the hotter months the beer lines will get longer. Waiting in line can make it easy to forget about water, but DO NOT forget about water. You don’t want to be that guy or girl. Don’t be stubborn, drink water and enjoy the beers a bit longer…and no, a lager doesn’t count!
TAKE NOTES
SPLURGE ON VIP
■ There are many festivals that hand out a notebook with your tasting glass, use it! If you like to go to a lot of festivals you can find some really nice beer notebooks on Amazon and keep a running tally of your brews. You don’t want to miss out on all of those Untappd app check-ins or badges! Some beer festivals will have upwards of 50+ versions of one particular style, and therefore, “that one IPA” is hard to remember.
REMEMBER THE SNACKS ■ One of the oddities of beer festivals that you will see are the necklaces folks make and wear into the festival. Ingenuity is the game here. Pretzels are the common sight, but I’ve seen beef jerky, cookies, and even granola bars. The idea is to have something to snack on as well as something that can somewhat cleanse the palate. They are easy to make and may just save you when the midday beer fest lull kicks in!

■ Seek out beer fests that offer a VIP (Suwanee Beer Fest VIP is definitely the best in my book!) or special beer section because these tickets usually come with access to rare or one-off beers. Small breweries, like Jekyll Brewing, often use these areas to try out a new recipe, or to reward folks for their continued support. In the past Jekyll has sent barrel-aged versions, fruit-infused versions and cellar-aged versions of some of their beers. With beer festivals it’s all about standing out from a brewery standpoint. Festival VIP experiences are worth the extra cost with the opportunity to try exclusive, new and different recipes.

Customers are immediately greeted by servers who are authentically cheerful, and quick to greet regulars by their name. Families dominate the dining room, and several generations can be seen around one table. WINE EXPERT @ BEVERAGE SUPERSTORE
P R E V I E W SEXUAL CHOCOLATE
■ From last year's festival is a red blend from Slo Down Wines. Sexual Chocolate was immensely popular at last year’s wine fest. The nose presents aromas of dark fruit and cherry; hints of clove and other rich spices follow. The first sip will bring layered flavors of plum, blackberry, cola, cherry, and a bit of dark chocolate (hence the name). The soft silky finish has just a hint of earthiness that really makes the rich fruitiness standout. $22.99 a bottle.
WHITE KNIGHT PROSECCO o, if you are at the Suwanee Beer Fest on Saturday March 18th, you will notice an added attraction this year. At the Beverage Superstore tent there will be a Suwanee Wine Fest preview. That’s right Suwanee Wine Fest and Suwanee Beer Fest are joining forces. We will have a sampling of four extremely popular wines from last year, and four new wines that will enter the fray this year. All wines are available for purchase at Beverage SuperStore in Suwanee.

MARCH / APRIL 17
■ Another hit from last year was this great sparkling wine that presents a bright straw color, with plenty of bubbles. It has a nice floral nose with a hint of apple. Once you take a sip you will be hit with apple and peach followed by cascading citrus flavors through the crisp finish. It is definitely an altogether pleasing experience. $14.99 a bottle.
ZOLO SIGNATURE WHITE ■ This wine performed extremely well at the last two Suwanee Wine Fests. Made in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina, Zolo Signature White is a refreshing blend of Torrontes, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. This wine portrays loads of tropical fruit upfront, with grapefruit following and just a hint of jasmine. Slightly effervescent and just a little sweet makes this an amazing springtime choice. $10.99 a bottle.
BURIED CANE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
■ This wine from the Columbia Valley in Washington State is: 80% Cabernet, 16% Merlot, and 4% Petite Verdot. Its dark purple color leads you to a nose full of red fruit and an earthy coffee aroma. This full-bodied red then fills your mouth with black cherry and raspberries, with a nice spice lingering on the finish. $14.99 a bottle.
savor
Well, those are the four wines from the 2016 fest, but you’re probably wondering what we’re bringing to the table in 2017. We are excited to feature these wines below for the first time at the festival and some even for the first time in our store.
MOOBUZZ CHARDONNAY
■ Moobuzz? Yes, Moobuzz, because it’s from California - the land of milk (cows go moo) and honey (bees buzz). It has a very citrusy nose with prevalent lemon and key lime aromas. Its crisp acidity allows the apple, pear, and honeydew melon to pop out before the buttery, creamy oak finish rounds out the experience. $13.99 a bottle.
ZOLO SIGNATURE RED BLEND ■ A delightful Argentinian wine with a combination of Merlot 30%, Bonarda 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, and Malbec 15%, that creates a mediumbodied, easy drinking red that straddles the line between dry and fruity. Its nose is full of cherry and berry aromas. These flavors are bolstered on consumption with pepper, coffee, and chocolate flavors, trailing off with a hint of cranberry and raisin on the finish. $12.99 a bottle.
STARS LIKE OURS ROSE
■ Well, it wouldn’t be springtime without a Rose’, so I present you a great wine from Tank Garage Winery. Watermelon, strawberry, and a hint of jasmine fill your nose as full flavors of melon, honeysuckle, and hints of spice lead to a crisp satisfying finish. $13.99 a bottle. #RoséAllDay!
DOMAINE DES VERCHERES BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR
■ A nice, French Burgundy that pours a light garnet color, with aromas of fresh cherry and strawberry on the nose. You will notice flavors of red fruit along with cherry, plum and a bit of licorice. The finish is earthy with a hint of oak. $15.99 a bottle.
Hopefully these selections have enticed you to stop by and sample some vino with us at Suwanee Beer Fest. We hope to see you there! And don’t forget to go ahead and save the date for Suwanee Wine Fest on Saturday, November 4th! 79

Suwanee Fest Logo Design Contest Announced ■ The City of Suwanee is looking for designers, artists, and creative people in general to submit logo designs for Suwanee Fest 2017. The designer of the winning logo will see his or her design on official festival t-shirts and marketing posters, as well as receive a $500 prize. "The theme for the 2017 festival, to be celebrated September 16 and 17, is…well…we’re not entirely sure. We know we want it to center around construction: community at work, building the future, paving the way – you get the idea. But our creative team has hit a roadblock (get it?). So this year, the tagline is open to interpretation as well,"the City reported. The competition is open to professional and amateur designers of all ages. Designs may be hand-drawn or computer-generated. Entries should be submitted in printed and electronic format. The deadline for submissions is April 1 (no fooling). See suwaneefest.com for additional guidelines and an entry form.

Smithson told the Gwinnett Daily Post, “Going into the last round, I had a (nearly 40-point lead), I knew it was going to happen,” Smithson said with a grin. “I was really happy. That’s when I had the most confidence. That’s when it really sunk in. I took my time. I knew I had a really good potential of winning.” Smithson is a contestant for the Gwinnett Daily Post Diver of the Year. He will be competing nationally at the end of April in the synchronized diving event held at Georgia Tech.
