Adventure Awaits This Summer! CHOOL IS winding down which

means many of us have summer on the brain. Hot Georgia summers no doubt bring about visions of trips to the lake, camping in the mountains, and seeking adventure in whatever form it may take. That’s why for this issue, our annual Travel and Adventure Guide, we wanted to pay tribute to all different types of adventure. Contributing writer Lizzy James looked adventure right in the face and literally swam with the sharks! On p. 16, Lizzy talks about her trip to The Georgia Aquarium to participate in one of its shark encounters as part of the new SHARKS! Predators of the Deep gallery. Lizzy had the opportunity to get up close and personal with tiger sharks as well as some larger than life rays — all in the name of research. Albeit less exciting, I had the opportunity to relive a former favorite pastime: long drives with the windows down, a playlist filled with my favorite songs, and an adventurous spirit. This year, however, adventure took a weird turn and culminated in a list of some of North Georgia’s off-the-beaten-path roadside attractions. Bigfoot? Check. Giant rocking chair in the middle of nowhere? Check. I even found myself at a school bus “graveyard” for those who appreciate unconventional art. Turn to p. 26 for My Weird Georgia Road Trip. If you’re craving something a little less weird flip over to p. 20. Our Travel and Adventure Guide is filled with plenty of ideas for both thrill-seekers and those who prefer to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground. We’ve spotlighted familyfriendly adventures that will transport you to another time as well as one that will get you up close to wild animals. If adventure looks more like discovering a new favorite wine or beer, we’ve got that covered, too.

Get lost on the road with My Weird Georgia Road Trip, p. 26, featuring a lineup of off-the-beatenpath roadside attractions across North Georgia, like the School Bus Graveyard in Alto.

Speaking of beer, Suwanee Beer Fest makes its triumphant return on June 26, 2021. After taking 2020 off due to unforeseen circumstances, the team is eager to once again pull together one of Suwanee’s favorite festivals. This year, Suwanee Beer Fest will celebrate all things red, white and blue as festival-goers sip in the summertime. Turn to p. 47 for the ultimate Suwanee Beer Fest guide with a breakdown of all the goods, including new breweries for 2021, entertainment, games, vendors, sponsors and more! After more than a year in the making, event organizers are sure to pull out all the stops to make the 2021 fest — their 10th festival to date — the biggest and best one yet. No matter the season, Buford’s newest wedding and events venue, Stonehenge House, will make the perfect backdrop for your big event. Learn more about the historic estate on p. 11, including its start as a wedding gift from a father to his daughter in 1904. The house now hosts weddings of its own complete with a picturesque landscape of native Georgia plants and amenities to ensure your event goes off without a hitch. We are also so excited to announce the winner of our 2021 Best Mom in Suwanee Contest. Turn to p. 36 to read the sweet submission from our winner’s husband and then follow along on her day of pampering courtesy of Suwanee’s Salon Greco.

SOUTHERN CHARM Downtown Buford’s newest wedding and events venue, Stonehedge House, embodies the sophistication and charm of its rich history. By Alicia Carter / Photos by Renee VanderWal

off Main Street in downtown Buford sits a striking two-story home with a wrap-around porch that seems plucked straight from the script of a classic Southern movie. Part Steel Magnolias and part The Notebook, the beautiful Stonehedge House occupies more than two acres of lush natural landscaping with native Georgia plants decorating the grounds, including hydrangeas, magnolias, camellias, and other flowering perennials. According to the Museum of Buford, Stonehedge’s rich history dates back to 1904 and Bona Allen Sr., who founded the booming tannery business in Buford in the late 1800s. Stonehedge House was believed to be a wedding present from Bona to his only daughter, Kate, and her husband, Burl Shadburn. Photos of the couple and their lineage are on display in the house and document the family history beginning with the wedding photo of Kate and her bridal party posing in front of one of seven original fireplaces in the home. The beautiful estate still stands on Shadburn Avenue, and over the years has evolved with its different owners, including Maria and Alan Turk, a master gardener who planted many of the plants still seen on the property. Maria often hosted smaller weddings on the grounds of Stonehedge, the last of which was held in June 2013. Now, Stonehedge House is once again hosting weddings and events under new ownership. Stonehedge House hosted its first event in April of this year, kicking off what Facility Director Susan Lewis hopes will be a schedule filled with events that celebrate love, family and joy. Lewis’ background in project management provides her ample experience to oversee Stonehedge House in its newest venture. “We’re one of the few Southern estates in the area that is open to public use,” she says. “We’re near a booming and - Susan Lewis revitalized Facility Director, Stonehedge House downtown area and close to the Mall of Georgia, providing abundant resources and accommodations for our guests. A FAIRY-TALE SETTING

Stonehedge is a photographer’s dream with meticulously cared for landscaping, picturesque balconies, and other natural elements, such as a Champion Japanese Maple tree, that create the perfect backdrop for your big day. The Southern estate also boasts multiple ceremony sites that can accommodate up to 200 guests, including a gazebo on the front lawn, a large stone patio, and a long, majestic lawn under a canopy of trees that date back hundreds of years.

Stonehedge House held its first wedding in April of this year. The mother of the bride described it as “magical.”

No matter when an event is held throughout the year, the landscape beautifully translates every season. The first level of the main house has been historically restored and features a 2,000-square-foot bridal suite, separate groom’s lounge, indoor sitting rooms, fully renovated chef ’s kitchen and a fire pit area. A separate 4,000-square-foot building was added in 2017 with an adjacent stone patio and open-air space. This new reception area complements the historic setting with what Lewis describes as “industrial chic charm." The wrought iron, crystal chandeliers and exposed ceiling draw your eyes upward, providing a feeling of openness and height as guests wine and dine. The large windows and natural sunlight accentuate the beauty of the space, giving guests a touch of modern elegance alongside the classically romantic setting. There are no wrong choices at Stonehedge. Whether you opt for a quaint springtime ceremony inside a flower-filled gazebo or a more traditional celebration on the stone patio surrounded by autumn hues, every nook of

The historic Stonehedge House dates back to 1904, when well-known Buford businessman Bona Allen presented it as a wedding gift to his only daughter, Kate. Now, the Southern estate has come full circle to once again host weddings and events under its new ownership.

Stonehedge is filled with charm and history, and the hospitable staff will ensure your event goes off without a hitch. From providing a list of preferred vendors and topnotch caterers to working with event planners, the staff at Stonehedge has done their research to make sure their events are affordable and of the highest quality. If you’re ready to plan your event, Lewis suggests taking advantage of the investment calculator located on their website. The calculator is a useful tool to determine if Stonehedge House is a good fit for your event and helps to break down the cost of a wedding, from venue rental fees and photography to catering, seating, the dress and more. “Our free online calculator for budgeting is helpful for brides because every venue has different pricing methods from a la carte with food and beverage minimums to all-inclusive events,” Lewis says. “We feel this tool will help brides see how affordable we are.”

Q: SHOULD I PICK STOCKS MYSELF OR SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE?

It depends on the person. Investing in the stock market is much different today than just a few years ago. The Wall Street Journal reports that “Roughly 85% of all trading is on autopilot — controlled by machines, models, or passive investing formulas, creating an unprecedented trading herd that moves in unison and is blazingly fast.” 1 This recent development means that even if someone analyzes a stock and the research shows it to be a good prospect for future growth, if the herd moves in Roughly 85% of all the opposite direction the investor trading is on autopilot may be trampled by the stampede. Like any hobby, investment research can be fulfilling for some people. However, the research must continue after one acquires a stock or bond. It is important to know — not only when to buy — but also when to sell. For example, Exxon was a stellar stock for decades. On December 1, 2016, a share of Exxon was at $90.26. Four years later, on Dec 1, 2020, it was down to $38.50.1 Exxon, which had been a member of Dow Jones Industrial Index since 1928, was removed on August 29, 2020. Sharks, Rays and Wet Suits ... Oh My! All the details on my recent adventure with some of the ocean's most notorious predators. By Lizzy James PHOTOS BY KARL LAMB AND COURTESY OF THE GEORGIA AQUARIUM FOR A GIRL FROM SUWANEE, GEORGIA,

getting face to face with some of the greatest predators on earth was something I thought I'd never do (or live to tell the tale of!). So, when given the chance to participate in Georgia Aquarium's new SHARKS! encounter, I was a little unsure but I figured someone had to do it. I arrived at the aquarium (a little nervous, but definitely excited), and made my way through behindthe-scenes corridors until arriving at the dark, and somewhat intimidating, SHARKS! encounter entrance. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by several Georgia Aquarium trainers as they ran through their roles at the aquarium, the

guidelines of the encounter, and what we had to look forward to. As we entered the exhibit and made our way to the locker rooms to grab a wetsuit, I caught a glimpse of what looked like massive fins swimming on top of the water in the main pool. Looking over the railing and into the pool, my eyes locked with the aquarium’s largest female tiger shark, and I swear it felt like she was looking into my soul. Now a little anxious, I entered the locker rooms where they had my wetsuit laid out. I quickly zipped it up and made my way back out to the immersion pool. Accompanied by two of the trainers, I waded into the 76 degree pool (which keep in mind was just feet away from the main exhibit and the tiger shark that was eyeing me) and was introduced to three of the aquarium’s female zebra sharks and three of the aquarium’s rays.

The new SHARKS! Encounter offers guests the opportunity to wade in an immersion pool with zebra sharks and rays.

First up was Lavender, a female zebra shark who gets her name from the slight purple coloration on her tail. The trainer brought her right across my lap and I was immediately surprised by how notslimy she felt. Almost sand-paper like, the trainers informed me that zebra sharks spend most of their time resting on the seafloor and can grow anywhere from 8 to 11 feet long. After the initial nerves were gone, I was able to settle in and truly appreciate how incredibly intelligent these creatures are. Each of the three zebra sharks have been trained to know their own individual symbol, and when the trainers show their symbol, the sharks know it is their turn to interact with the guests (i.e., get

As the fish break and dash out of the way, guests are given the first glimpse of some of the ocean’s most fascinating (and feared) predators: hammerheads

rewarded with plenty of crab meat). For 30 minutes, the three sharks took turns swimming across my lap as the trainers educated me on how their long tails allow them to be more agile in the water, how their patterns change with age, and that they only bite if they are angered or annoyed. After the sharks were done showing off, next came the ray’s turn. What felt quite like a weighted blanket across my lap, the rays were about 4 feet wide and weighed a couple hundred pounds. This may sound large, but in reality these rays are still babies and on

However, it seemed as if they were a little more impatient to get their food. At any given time, I would have a ray across my lap as well as at my feet waiting for their next piece of crab meat. After staring in complete fascination for a few minutes, my immersion time came to an end and it was time to hit the showers. In total, I got to live out my marine biology dreams for about two hours. I walked away from the experience with a newfound appreciation for the predators of the deep as well as appreciation for the work that the Georgia Aquarium team is putting in to protect and spread awareness for these creatures. Behind the scenes, researchers throughout the aquarium and in the field are learning more about marine life and making efforts to protect our oceans every day. Proceeds from programs like this SHARKS! encounter ensure that the aquarium can continue its research and conservation endeavors in the future. In addition to the SHARKS! encounter, aquarium visitors can also get waist-deep with the beluga whales, help feed the dolphins, swim with the whale sharks, pet a penguin, and get up close to other aquarium residents, like the sea lions and sea otters. These types of encounters not only allow visitors to meet these amazing animals, but it also humanizes the experiences many of them face in their natural habitat, which helps the aquarium to spread its message of conservation to more and more people. Getting a hug from a ray is just the cherry on top. ■ If you’re interested in learning more about their conservation efforts, visiting the aquarium, or participating in an encounter, visit GeorgiaAquarium.org.

URING SUMMER,

there’s nothing I love more than to take a long drive chasing an unknown destination — windows down, a carefully curated playlist setting the mood, and the warm sun sneaking in through the windows like a welcome shot of vitamin D for the soul. My favorite are the ones where you get lost in the drive itself, the roadmap of blue skies and wispy brushstroke clouds leading the way as you meander along the highway. These days, however, those long drives tend to come in the form of added miles to my odometer while my youngest catches a cat nap in the back seat on our weekly trip to Target — but I’ll take them. And I’m sure that’s true for many of us. We’ve traded exploration for the comforts of adult life, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But the road’s syren call continues to get stronger as the days grow warmer. That’s why, for this year’s Travel & Adventure Guide, I wanted to load up the family to travel off the beaten path to a few lesser known roadside attractions throughout North Georgia. I wanted to “get lost” on the road again… all in the name of research. After all, sometimes the destination is Lula Rocking Chair less important than the journey, even if it leads to some pretty memorable photos — like the one of my 6 year old sitting atop an oversized rocking chair in the middle of nowhere. If you’re feeling up for a drive, and if you’re growing tired of the same old day trip hotspots, I pulled together a list of five unusual roadside attractions throughout North Georgia. Some are more legit than others, like a folk art national treasure in the northwest corner of the state, but all of them are worth the drive in their own unique way. So fill up your tank, buckle up, and enjoy the ride.

The School Bus Graveyard in Alto, Georgia, acts as a roadside art gallery for people driving along 365.

School Bus Graveyard ALTO, GA / Cornelia Highway and Crane Mill Road I travel up 365 on my way to the mountains, I always pass a peculiar lot filled with broken-down, graffitied school buses. It’s not the same kind of graffiti you’d see spray-painted on the side of trains. The School Bus Graveyard is more like a roadside art gallery where different artists leave their mark for passersby to enjoy. The murals are colorful and whimsical — there’s no shortage of pop art backgrounds perfect for a unique family photo shoot or Instagram boomerang. During my recent visit we saw a pastel chameleon and a blue-eyed wolf hiding among the buses. There was a trippy wizard looking up toward the sky and a pink and purple opossum. Another bus was painted like the American flag.

365

WHENEVER

One of my personal favorites was a bus adorned with Jackson Pollock splatters from roof to tire. The School Bus Graveyard is located next to an auto parts shop owned by Alonzo Wade, who uses the buses as a make-shift fence to deter thieves. Sometime around 2012, a team of artists known as Crispy Printz began painting the buses. Each year they invite other creatives to come and repaint the buses, leaving behind unconventional canvases of rotating artwork. The buses are located on private property, so there are rules to follow when you visit. Visitors should park on the side of Crane Mill Road right off 365. Do not enter the yard of their home and business. Instead, walk back to 365 and turn left toward the nearby concrete

spillway, then follow it up to the busses. (Trust me, it’s a much better — and safer — path than the dirt trail up the side of the hill on Crane Mill Road.) Visitors are asked to be respectful of the rules painted on the signage dotting the path, which includes no climbing on or under any of the buses. For the most part, you can be in and out in less than 30 minutes. On a bright and sunny day the buses make for some absolutely stellar photo backdrops. I snapped a bunch before the kids started to get cranky, then we packed up and made our way back to the car. It was worth it to see the artwork up close and take some fun photos. Pro-tip: Head back south on 365 a couple miles to Jaemor Farms on your way home. Grab some fresh fruit and veggies, hot boiled peanuts, and an array of plants to make the trip extra worth it. Plus, the country candy options for the kids will make up for all those photos.

Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden PENNVILLE / 200 North Lewis St. a lot about Howard Finster during my time working at an alt-weekly publication in Atlanta. A revered folk artist, Finster was one of the leaders of the “outsider” art movement throughout the 1980s and ’90s. Born in 1916, Finster was an evangelist and pastor until 1976, when he claimed to receive a vision from God to spread the gospel through his art. Finster went on to create more than 40,000 works of art before his death in 2001, all while unknowingly building a nationally recognized art environment that would go on to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Finster, a self-taught artist, created works from recycled materials, broken glass, concrete, I LEARNED

27

painted objects, rust and other discarded materials, all of which have biblical references. His work began to gain notoriety when an article published in Esquire Magazine dubbed his art environment “A Garden of Paradise.” Finster’s work was further thrust into the mainstream when it appeared on the album cover of R.E.M.’s Radio Free Europe in 1983.

Paradise Garden is Chattooga County’s No. 1 tourist attraction and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne commissioned a piece by Finister for the cover of their 1985 album Little Creatures, which Rolling Stone Magazine named Album Cover of the Year. No small feat for an outsider artist creating biblical art from a remote area in Georgia. After Finster’s death, his art environment, now known as Paradise Garden, began to dramatically decline. This led Chattooga County to purchase the property in 2012 and turn it over to the nonprofit Paradise Garden Foundation, who continues to run the property today. In fact, Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden is now the No. 1 tourist attraction in Chattooga County. When visiting Paradise Garden, guests can stroll through 2-and-a-half acres of antiques, rock formations, paintings, recycled glass, mosaic walls, towers, and sculptures. Pack a lunch and make a day of it, then visit the gift shop to pick up a goodie to bring home. There are even Airbnbs on the property where you can stay the night and get the full experience of the garden and all of Finster’s artwork. It’s a must-see for art lovers or anyone who is looking to discover their inner outsider.

Guests can stroll through 2.5 acres of antiques, rock formations, paintings, mosaic walls, towers and more, all of which have Biblical references.

stop combines

some of my favorite road trip essentials: animals, ice cream and cheesy souvenirs! Bypass the traditional roadside petting zoos and head north to Tiger, Georgia, to Goats on the Roof. After all, who doesn’t love goats? The ice cream slash souvenir shop slash petting zoo is a big hit with the kiddos and gives the family ample opportunity to get out and stretch their legs while indulging in some goodies. Since 2007, the “family fun stop” has continued to draw a crowd thanks to a number of attractions, including a large gift shop, rock and candy store, award-winning homemade ice cream, homemade fudge, gem mining and, of course, the titular goats who can be found hanging out on the roof! Kids can feed the goats by purchasing food via a fun contraption that

delivers it right up to the roof. Kiddos can even become official Goat Rangers! Win-win.

THE LULA

52

Goats on the Roof is a fun stop if you have kids — or if you’re indulging your inner kid. You can snap photos of the goats and pick up some provisions for the rest of your trip. There’s even a playground where the kids can get out some of their pent-up energy! Stop by Thursday-Monday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. After Labor Day their hours change to WednesdayMonday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Goats on the Roof is part petting zoo and part souvenir shop.

Rocking Chair is an oversized piece of furniture, which has seen better days after years of direct sunlight, that is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. I may not have the best sense of direction, but it took me a while to find this one, since the only directions I had were that it’s located in a field at the corner of Lula Road and Persimmon Tree Road. Once we found it, though, I was happy we made the trip. The backdrop is exactly what you’d expect on a random country road. The chair is accessible by a small ladder that leads up to the seat. My daughter was the first to climb up and throw her legs over the side. She looked like a miniature doll sitting atop the giant chair and was quite tickled by how she looked in the photos. It’s a fun pit stop if you’re on your way to another nearby destination (it’s a quick drive from the School Bus Graveyard if you’d like to knock two off your list in one day). Passing cars will give you a honk as they ride by — probably locals who like seeing people enjoy their unique photo op. It’s weird, but it’s kind of cool, too.

Expedition Bigfoot CHERRY LOG / 1934 Hwy. 515

EVER WONDERED what Bigfoot sounds like?

Make the drive to Expedition Bigfoot in Cherry Log, Georgia, to find out. The 6,500-square-foot museum is dedicated to all things Sasquatch and boasts a curated collection that includes life-size dioramas, Bigfoot and Abominable Snowman artifacts, a theater, videos, photos, and witness testimonies, as well as Bigfoot growls caught on tape! Slip on some headphones to hear recordings of the elusive creatures speaking in their native language as well as Bigfoot howls captured from all over the world. “Expedition Bigfoot was a combination of a much needed family attraction in our area, and a lifelong fascination with Bigfoot,” says Expedition Bigfoot curator David Baraka. “I toyed with the idea of making a traveling museum from a retired bus, but realized it could never hold enough of what I wanted to display because there is so much good evidence out there. It was just a matter of bringing some of it together in one place. Expedition Bigfoot took five years to complete as more evidence poured in after we opened.” Expedition Bigfoot is a great place to discover the explorer in all of us — and it’s a fun time for the kids, too! The museum is open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. It’s a bargain with admission at only $8 for adults and $6 for kids (kids 5 and younger get in free).

➼ If the effects of cabin fever are starting to set in,

why not give in to the call of the open road? Load up the family and take a drive to one of these unconventional roadside attractions for a break from the norm — or perhaps another unknown destination that will lead you off the grid and to an unexpected summertime adventure. You might just make some fun family memories that aren't so weird after all. ■

like myself who crave adventure and thrive on planning trips, the summer season is an optimal time to pack the calendar with all things travel and exploration. In between those excursions, however, we’re often left wondering how to best fill the void when it’s not always feasible or affordable to drop what we’re doing and sail off into the sunset. Through my attempts at soaking up every bit of summertime and sunshine, I’ve outlined a few ideas to help set you and your family’s sights on being intentional and content all summer long... FOR THOSE

NATALIE GARRETT Contributing Writer

Before settling into the career world, much of my time was spent with little ones. My most For the treasured stint of childcare was the summer Littles I spent as a nanny to a sister-brother duo, ages 6 and 10. As enthusiastic and energetic children, their social calendars were filled with play dates, summer camps, and swim team practices and meets. These activities typically kept us on the move, but we certainly still had off-days with down time. Too creative and too smart for their own good, I knew I needed to utilize these breaks in the schedule to exercise their imagination. I decided to grab a box of popsicle sticks and write a random activity on each one. I placed them in a jar and every time one of the kiddos started to claim boredom, I’d have them draw a stick from the jar and we had to complete whatever activity it read. It was a spontaneous way to keep us occupied and laughing! Here are a few activities to help get you started on a jar for your family:

Have a Water War HINT: A few bucks on water guns and balloons at the local dollar store can go a long way.

Hunt for Treasure LEVEL UP: Using riddles as clues makes the game more interactive and takes longer to complete.

Build an Epic Fort PRO-TIP: Wrap some chairs with a fitted bed sheet and place a box fan blowing inside so the fort is filled with air and forms a dome.

Create a Backyard Obstacle Course IDEA: Use pool noodles to create obstacles and end with a splash into a kiddie pool… the options are endless!

For the Not-soLittles

Once they outgrow the popsicle stick phase, it becomes more and more challenging to come up with adequate entertainment. Chances are, whatever the family is doing isn’t very “cool” and they’re searching for something that can be done with their friends. Keeping in mind activities that are manageable for a group of younger people, try:

Backyard Camping Sometimes kids just need a sense of independence to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Try letting them loose on setting up camp in the backyard and task them with preparing all the necessary supplies.

Hold a Video Game Tournament I know, we’re trying to reduce screen time… but take this opportunity to turn their favorite solo activity into a face-to-face interaction. Move all your TVs into one space to create a gaming room and let them “battle royale” it out. Draw a players’ bracket on an oversized poster-board to amp up the hype!

33

For the GrownUps

Summer fun doesn’t have to stop when you’re an adult. There are plenty of opportunities to maximize on get togethers, like:

Wine Tasting Delectable and easy to execute? Double win! Everyone shows up with a bottle of wine and assortment of cheese to mix and match. Try the selection together as a group to make it more interactive and offer index cards for tasting notes!

Sweet Summertime No matter where the coming months may lead you, it’s destined to be well spent if it involves making memories. I might be biased, but an important criteria in making memories in my book involves tasty treats along the way. One of my favorite (and easiest!) desserts to make this time of year is this incredible blueberry cobbler cake, topped with vanilla ice cream, of course! Desserts consisting of fruit already scream summertime, but it also looks festive for all of the patriotic summer holidays. You can’t go wrong!

Ingredients: - ¼ pound (1 stick) of butter, melted

Themed Cookouts/ Dinner Parties Outdoor barbecues and dinner parties are a favored activity throughout the summer. Put a spin on your next event, whether it’s big dresses and hats for a Derby theme in May or posing as characters from your friend group's favorite TV show for an end-of-summer bash.

HE 2021 Best Mom in Suwanee

Contest feels extra special. Over the last year, we’ve all had to adapt to a new normal as we’ve navigated the changing landscape of a worldwide pandemic. Kids have adjusted to virtual learning, parents have balanced jobs while their kids learn from home, and businesses have all done their best to stay afloat during challenging times. And while we all deserve a collective pat on the back for surviving the past year, there’s just something special about moms. Moms always go above and beyond for their families, but when faced with a year like we’ve had, they’ve all taken on more than their fair share and still knocked it out of the park! With all of that in mind, reading through this year’s submissions for our Best Mom in Suwanee Contest was even more emotional. There were so many sweet stories about the wonderful women in our community who go above and beyond for their families. The stories were submitted by sons and daughters, husbands and friends, all praising the dedication, selflessness, and love these mothers have shown. To say it was difficult to choose a winner is an understatement.

Submitted by her husband, Matt Pennington:

Dear Suwanee Magazine, Veronica is my wife and my best friend. She is a wonderful mother to my son and as a caretaker of myself, she is second to none. I have a very rare autoimmune disease which hospitalized me for three months a few years back. I am now having to receive infusions of a chemo-like medication every six months for the rest of my life to manage it. She supports me, cares for me after my infusions, and drives me to and from the appointments. She works full time as a DEI professional and helps our son with digital learning. She has held our family together over 2020 and done so much for both my son and I. The treatment of that auto immune disease led to me having to have my hip replaced at 35 years old. She was my nurse, cheerleader and helper postsurgery, encouraging me daily to push harder and heal. The hip replacement has now failed but having the revision surgery is less daunting knowing she will be by my side. She is also a woman of very strong convictions. She is both Puerto Rican and Black. Over 2020 she has come to connect

with her heritage and develop into a truly inspiring person. Her ability to convey her beliefs fairly and be charitable to all has really left me stunned and quite frankly

BRO W N Kayla Brown is a young Kayla Brown artist who specializes in drawing, painting, illustration, and graphic design. Throughout her childhood, Kayla was inspired by cartoons, animation, comics, and video games and would often draw characters from them and even create her own. Over time, she began doing portraiture, still life, sculpture, and other forms of art using a variety of media. With the encouragement of her parents, she became a member of the Suwanee Arts Center at age 15 as a sophomore attending North Gwinnett High School and participated in several exhibitions and two art festivals. Kayla is currently attending Kennesaw State University majoring in digital animation. Along with art, she is also pursuing her passion for music by being a part of the KSU Philharmonic Orchestra and playing the cello. She aspires to become an animator and storyboard artist for Cartoon Network or Pixar to fulfill her dream of creating more animated shows and movies that feature African Americans as main characters. “Growing up (and even now still), there were not a lot of cartoons or animated shows that represented characters that looked like me,” she says. “My work and my style are driven by creating what I don’t normally see in order to inspire the minds of others to follow suit.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU OR LED YOU TO YOUR CAREER? The work that I do

professionally is focused on developing impactful leaders who are equipped to create a healthy workplace culture and high-performing teams. The work I do publicly is focused on developing a healthy community where people can thrive. What inspires me is a question that I’ve asked my children since they were young: “What breaks your heart and how are you uniquely equipped to be a part of healing that brokenness?” The answers from my children have evolved as they’ve grown and changed. My answer has largely stayed the same, my toolbox has just evolved. I believe each person comes hardwired with a contribution, unique to them that this world needs. It breaks my heart when a person or groups of people are undervalued, underrepresented or worse, they’ve lost sense of their own value. Our workplaces need their employees and leaders to be engaged, to bring their contribution and to add value. Our communities need that even more from our citizens. It doesn’t happen on

accident, so we have to create environments that foster a spirit of dignity, collaboration and authentic connection. My work is about this mission. I am blessed to be able to do what I love.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED OR LIVED IN SUWANEE? 22 years. We

moved to Ruby Forest in 1998, and we’ve lived in the same home ever since. We love our neighborhood!

WHAT HAS KEPT YOU HERE? We’ve grown up with

this community. I like to say that Suwanee raised us. When we moved here, our children were babies and now, all these years later, my oldest has his very own baby! The community has grown and matured at around the same pace as my family. We are deeply invested and connected to Suwanee. It’s the most lovable city in the world!

WHAT IS SOMETHING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? I would

love to travel abroad with my family. It would be a dream to experience different cultures and countries with my people.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN SUWANEE? I can’t

pick just one favorite. I spend a lot of time at Cafe Amico for business meetings. I love a good post-workout smoothie from Planet Smoothie. SipHappens is a great night out with the girlfriends. My family loves Beto’s Tacos, and I like sushi from Sushi Nami. StillFire Brewing is our new favorite hangout, where we can bring food from all of our favorite Suwanee restaurants!

HOW BIG IS YOUR FAMILY? My husband,

Eric, and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We have four children and have recently added our daughter-in-law and baby grandson. You’ll often see us with our dog, Rosie. She loves all of our parks!

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I just had a dream trip to visit the city where my mom was born in the Netherlands. It was beautiful! Next, I’d love to travel to Indonesia. My grandfather was born there, and I’d like to experience that environment and culture.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE? Here

at the city we have four anchor points: Suwanee Quality, Unique, Remarkable, and Visionary. We SURV our community well because we hold ourselves to those standards. We are uncompromising in our commitment

The community has grown and matured at around the same pace as my family. We are deeply invested and connected to Suwanee. It’s the most lovable city in the world!”

to things like public safety and financial responsibilities, as well as addressing infrastructure and planning needs in our community so that we can continue to grow in a vibrant and sustainable way. We honor our past (the people and traditions that make us unique), while keeping a strong vision for a community where every person who lives, works and visits here knows that they belong. We are inclusive, innovative and fun!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

In Ruby Forest, with a few more grandkids! I’ll be taking them to play in our parks, to eat in our restaurants and to serve in our community (volunteering starts

early in our family). I hope that my business will continue to serve an even broader reach to help build healthy professionals who will, in turn, create teams of high-performing, liberating leaders for their organizations and communities. I hope to use my platform as a public servant in Suwanee to continue to create a place where people are better connected to other people and to our place.

FAMILY MATTERS By Molly Halbrooks, LMFT, Grow Counseling

Keep Your Kids’ Minds Active this Summer! be such a fun time to rest, relax and recharge from a busy school year. For many families, though, there comes a point when the resting expires and the boredom kicks in. No one, including parents, wants to have to put together full lesson plans and then figure out how to wrangle your kids into doing them — especially if you’ve been doing digital learning or virtual schooling all year. At the same time, completely shutting down and not investing in critical thinking or learning all summer can mean that starting the next school year is a struggle for everyone. Explore these tips to find the right fit to keep your kids' minds active and help everyone to have fun this summer! SUMMER CAN

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Focus on things that everyone enjoys, just add an educational element. • If you travel, learn about the things you see along the way. Invest in a guidebook or print some info from the internet, and read about what you’re passing. • Plan a drive to see something that your kids have been learning about in school to add an in-person understanding of a place or event that was just theoretical before. Look particularly for the spots that are within an easy day trip distance, and pack a picnic. • Watch a movie, then play out one of the themes or concepts in the movie. Encourage your child to think about what it might look like in their life. For example, watch Inside Out and then explore the emotions they feel on a daily basis.

Let your kids lead the way. Pay attention to what they are most interested in, then build on that. • Let them explore their favorite topics deeply, and encourage them to think about them in new and novel ways. For example, if your child loves Pokémon, encourage them to make up stories about their favorite characters, and use those to teach about English — writing, spelling, the arc of storytelling (beginning, middle, end), different character tropes, adjectives... The list is endless and can be tailored to your child's developmental level. • Assign a topic to each member of the family, then let them be a “guide” for the day. Include things your child will be excited about (the guide gets to pick lunch!). They will love being in charge and teaching the family something, and they will be practicing their research skills, their ability to explain and teach others, and practicing focus and staying on task.

Summer can be a time when your kids get to learn just for the love of learning, without tests, grades, or worksheets. Try to let go of expectations and follow what lights you up, and you might be surprised at how much fun you all have! ■

The Connection Between Stress and Physical Health Perhaps my most surprising revelation in private practice was when I began to see just how much stress and emotional health impacted the physical body. As a chiropractor who focuses on physical pain, this isn’t something that I truly understood until I witnessed it time and time again with my own two eyes. BY DR. LAUREN MILLMAN

IN MY practice, I often

see two types of patients: those who handle life’s stressors adequately and appropriately, and those who don’t. Almost every time, those patients who are overly stressed and don’t handle life’s stressors well, are almost always more sick and are in more pain than those who handle their stress well. The most challenging patients I see are those who believe they handle life’s stressors well, yet their body is clearly telling them otherwise. Whether they are in denial, or simply completely unaware, these patients are often slow to heal, or respond to care at

a much slower pace. Pent up stress, when not given an outlet in your body, leads to disease and pain. Chronic physical pain almost always has an underlying emotional component. “My back aches” or “I have frequent headaches” are often signs the body is trying to communicate that it’s not handling its current environment well. Headaches might be common, but they are not normal. Same goes for unexplained body pain. It may be common, but it’s certainly not normal.

UNDERLYING EMOTIONAL COMPONENT

➤ I wouldn’t be doing my job as a wellness practitioner if I didn’t assist patients in making the connection that their emotional stress is impacting their health, and in a big way. As a chiropractor, I can correct the spine to aid in relieving pain, but if that pain has an underlying emotional component, that adjustment will only go so far. Often times, this is why chronic physical issues never get resolved. I don’t believe it’s possible to be healthy if you’re overly stressed, anxious, or if your headspace is

jumbled, even if you’re doing all the right things. You can exercise regularly, drink quality water, eat organic food, take supplements, receive the best chiropractic care, but if your headspace and emotional health isn’t well, neither are you. Your emotional health routine should be just as important, if not more, than your physical routine.

EMOTIONAL REST

➤ Take time for yourself. This means slowing down and making sure your needs are met. It’s not selfish to give yourself the emotional rest when it’s needed. Self-care means being strong enough to speak up for what you need. Taking the time for your own self-care is not a trendy fad, it’s absolutely necessary for your health. This means quiet time with yourself. This means putting your phone down from time to time and just being engaged in the current moment. It means less control and more acceptance. Happiness is an inside job, and it’s no one’s responsibility but your own. You may not know exactly what needs to be done to handle stress better, but a

HEALTH & WELLNESS huge step in the right direction is awareness. Sometimes simply slowing down is enough for you to gain perspective. If you continue to go, go, go and push through life’s obligations when your body is telling you to slow down and ease up a bit, it’s only a matter of time until your body forces you to do just that. It’s much easier to make health changes when your body is whispering rather than ignore it until it’s screaming.

➽ For the most part, the stressors in our life aren’t going away. However, we can control how we manage them, and provide ourselves what we need without feeling guilty. Wisdom comes from listening to what your body needs and then providing it. How can you take care of others if your own cup isn’t full? It’s never a selfish act to take care of yourself first. It’s only when your cup is full are you truly able to help and care for others around you. ■

PRESENTED BY SYMPHONY APARTMENT HOMES

A NEW DATE. A NEW THEME. SUWANEE’S FAVORITE FESTIVAL RETURNS TO TOWN CENTER PARK ON JUNE 26, 2021. The festival may have taken a break in 2020, and we might be drinking outside in the summertime this year, but we can all agree that it’s time to come together once again to celebrate great craft beer.  47

HIS YEAR,

the festival USA Today named "One of the Top 10 Beer Festivals in the Country" will set up shop in June, which means a temporary new theme is in order. Since the new date is just around the corner from the Fourth of July, event organizers landed on a red, white and blue theme celebrating the good ol’ U.S.A. Pack up the St. Paddy’s gear and store it away for 2022, then get ready to arrive at this year’s fest dressed in your best America-themed get-ups — think Uncle Sam, stars and stripes, American flags, and so much more. Get creative! After all, there’s nothing quite like drinking a cold American brew in the summertime. Each year festival organizers work to one-up the previous year’s event, and that will be no exception for the 2021 festival — especially since this one is two years in the making. Attendees can expect all of the festival mainstays they’ve come to love, including samples of more than 350 craft beers; the return of the Georgia Brew Battle; fun and games, such as Giant Jenga, Peach State Cornhole, Giant Beer Pong, axe throwing and more; live entertainment and vendor booths; as well as the VIP - 2020 USA TODAY Experience, featuring exclusive beer pours, catering by Marlow’s Tavern, and a private tent and restrooms for VIP ticket holders. There’s even a special plan in place for those dubbed “Super Supporters” who have held on to their tickets since the original 2020 date. And don’t worry, plans are in place for a cooling station to help festival-goers beat the heat. So be sure to mark your calendar for June 26, then flip through the next few pages for a handy guide to the 2021 Suwanee American Craft Beer Festival.

Fest main stage from 3-5 p.m. Slippery When Wet has played over 1,600 shows throughout the U.S. alone and has traveled to Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. They have headlined on over 60 cruises on the Royal Caribbean cruise line. Their drive, musical ability, showmanship and dedication to duplicating the Bon Jovi live experience simply cannot be outdone. Opening the live music will be Dunwoody, Georgia's own Sucker Punch, performing from 1-3 p.m.

2021 SBF GUIDE Founded in 2017, Sucker Punch has quickly ascended to the top ranks of ’90s tribute bands in the Atlanta area. While the band considers ’90s rock hits as its “bread-and-butter,” they will venture into any modern decade to pull hard-hitting rock tunes. From Zeppelin to Rage, Blink to Metallica and Green Day to 311, these fellas bring talent, energy and a rock-show mentality to every event they play. FUN & GAMES This year’s festival games will be bigger and better than ever — literally. In addition to the return of everyone’s favorite beer drinking activities — Giant Jenga and Peach State Cornhole — festival organizers have also added Giant (and we mean GIANT) beer pong and mobile axe throwing to the mix! Axecessive Entertainment will be on site with their mobile axe throwing cages, giving attendees a chance to (safely) test out their axe throwing skills. So grab a beer, your best pong partner, and maybe even an axe or two, and get ready for some friendly competition! Just don’t spill your beer!

Open since 1998, Monterrey was purchased in 2001 by its current owners, Glenda and José Mata, who had previous experience opening Monterrey restaurants in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area. While there may be many Monterrey restaurants across the Southeast, Glenda stresses that each is owned independently. Monterrey Mexican Restaurant has been a Suwanee staple for more than two decades.

Part of the reason for Monterrey Mexican Restaurant’s continued success is its dedication to its customers. “We have been fortunate to cater to the Suwanee community,” Glenda says. “Our customers have become our friends and extended family, not to mention our employees — Paloma cocktail most of them have made with been with Monterrey tequila and citrusy juices. since the restaurant opened.” Glenda says their 23rd anniversary is significant because it speaks to the support of their loyal customers and friends, especially during recent uncertain times. The City of Suwanee has also shown support to the restaurant since it opened, and Glenda says they’ve gone “above and beyond” to help small businesses in the area.

➼ The other and perhaps most telling reason for Monterrey’s success is its dedication to serving quality, authentic Mexican food to its hungry patrons. The food is made fresh daily with only the highest quality ingredients. The menu is filled with tasty options ranging from sizzling fajitas and comforting chilaquiles to a selection of soups, salads, and Mexican essentials sure to please everyone at the table. Glenda says it’s hard to choose just one favorite on the menu, but recommends the Tacos al Pastor, a trio of Mexican-style pork tacos topped with onions and cilantro served on corn tortillas alongside charro beans and a special green sauce. She also suggests the mole enchiladas, which come with red mole sauce, queso fresco, onions and sour cream. “We take pride in our menu,” she says. “We enjoy serving each one of our customers with great pleasure.” If you’re new to the restaurant, order the pollo con queso dip to snack on while you peruse the menu. The addictive appetizer is a nice alternative to the usual queso and salsa (also super delicious), and comes with chicken and rice covered with a healthy topping of queso. If you need a little direction when ordering, you can’t go wrong with the daily specials. They also serve a popular fried chicken that, while not on the menu, is still available to order. Don’t forget to get a margarita or sangria to wash everything down. They even offer pitchers so the table can share. If you prefer to order a mixed drink from the bar, Glenda says to try the Paloma, a tequilaMonterrey’s menu is filled with a variety of dishes made fresh daily with only the highest quality ingredients. based drink with just Don’t forget to order a frozen margarita (pictured above) the right amount of to top off your meal. sweetness.

It’s evident on a bustling weekday night that business is good. Servers carry hearty plates to eager diners who are lost in conversation. People toast at the bar and sip margaritas. It’s no wonder - Glenda Mata, Co-owner people want Monterrey Mexican Restaurant to come back again and again. As for the future of the restaurant, Glenda says she wants Monterrey to continue to evolve and introduce new dishes to the menu. She’d like to incorporate dishes similar to their Alpharetta restaurant,

Tarahumata Mexican Grill & Tequila Bar, which serves tapas and 153 different tequilas. “Our staff, for the most part, knows exactly what our regular customers

order,” Glenda says. “We have seen babies grow up, and they continue to visit us with their own families. Our servers make sure everyone feels welcome every time they come to Monterrey.” With this type of focus on quality dishes and a dedication to customer service, we’re sure Monterrey will continue to add to its family and be a mainstay for years to come. ■

MAKING BEER BETTER Located in the picturesque North Georgia mountains, Tantrum Brewing Company is passionate about making beer better while upholding the values of hard work, family and community. BY LIZZY JAMES / PHOTOS BY 180 VISUALS

AFTER A

year and a half of working in the power industry and only two weeks away from closing on a house in Oklahoma, Tantrum Brewing Company CEO and White County native Ross Crumpton had a life-changing revelation. “I realized I absolutely hated my job,” he says. “I called my Tantrum Brewing Company has 16 parents and said beers on tap with four core beers they there is no way I distribute full time. can buy a house out here. I can’t do this.” Instead, he headed back to Georgia with an engineering degree and an idea. That idea would eventually turn into Tantrum Brewing, a family owned and operated brewery located in the North Georgia mountains. We recently had a chance to catch up with Ross to learn more about how Tantrum is “making beer better” in the Georgia craft beer scene.

Tantrum CEO says that while the Tantrum team may be small, they’re mighty. “We are a well-oiled machine that gets things done.”

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE CRAFT BEER INDUSTRY? Right after college I became super into homebrewing. I decided to buy some home brew equipment and basically just bought enough to get by with literally a kettle on a stove. As an engineering major from Georgia Tech, I really enjoyed the art and science behind everything. After working in Alabama and Oklahoma for a few years after college, I realized that the field I was in just wasn’t something I was passionate about. I was only two weeks away from buying my house in Oklahoma when I finally realized this just wasn’t something I wanted to do

anymore. I ended up moving home to Cleveland, Georgia, and had this idea of opening a brewery. I basically wrote a business plan and convinced enough people in 2017 that it was a good idea. We found a location and broke ground in 2018 and officially opened the taproom in March of 2019. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A BREWERY IN CLEVELAND? Cleveland is my

hometown and I love it here. This area is mainly known for its wineries and there are over a dozen of them in this area. I always thought it would be cool to have a brewery up here as well. EXPLAIN THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME TANTRUM. I always tell people that coming up with a good brewery name is tough. You never want to be too on the nose and oftentimes a lot of the names

are already taken. We went through so many names that incorporated landmarks or “Southern” and none of them seemed to fit. It got to a point where I literally just started thinking of random names and Tantrum popped up. We have a family of all boys and it was just one of those things that kind of summed us up. We joked that there is always a lot of family feuding with us boys being boys and from there it just kind of stuck.

65

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR HEAD BREWER. When we first opened we started out by hiring a head brewer and I would jokingly call myself the maintenance man since I built and maintained a lot of things myself. However, come 2020 I started taking over the brewery operations on my own. Today, we have myself and two other full-time production staff, Kylie Burns and Tim Casey, working in the brewhouse. We are a pretty small team in the back and I always joke that although we are small, we are a well-oiled team that gets things done. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER GEORGIA BREWERIES? If I had to say just one thing, it would definitely be the location. It is hands down the number one thing people comment on when they visit the taproom. We are a great escape outside of the city with an incredible view of Yonah Mountain. We have about 5 acres in total, so there is plenty of outdoor space and grass space for people to spread out. When we first opened the taproom back up after COVID, we did outdoor seating only and having that much space and being able to keep everyone apart really gave us a leg up.

66

HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN SINCE OPENING? Overall, we continue to receive great support from the community, and we are super thankful for that. It is pretty cool because a lot of our customers aren’t really hyperlocal. Cleveland is a small town, but we also get a lot of tourism from Helen. Our backyard is more expansive than your typical city brewery and includes people from Lumpkin, Habersham, and Hall counties because it isn’t that far of a drive for them. They can drive 20-30 minutes to the brewery, which is really no different than them driving into Atlanta. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST/BESTSELLER IN THE TAPROOM? We have 16 taps and try to brew a lot of different styles. We have four core beers that we can and distribute full time. These include our Folklore Hazy IPA, Lip Quencher Double IPA, Gypsy Queen Mexican Light Lager, and Poems at Midnight which is a raspberry and blackberry Berliner Weisse. If I had to pick one over another, it would definitely be Folklore. It is a really good, easy drinking IPA.

MAY / JUNE 21

HOW IS THE BREWERY INVOLVED IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY? We try to do a ton of events and fundraiser-type deals. We usually do something at least once a month that supports a cause that we are passionate about. We have a really cool band called R&D that comes up and plays, and instead of taking payment they donate everything to a cause that we choose together. It is a really humbling thing to see people come together and support something whether it is the local food bank, animal shelters, etc. It is great to have a place like this in the community where people can come together. IF YOU COULD RECOMMEND ONE SUMMER BEER THAT IS ON TAP, WHAT WOULD IT BE? In the summer we do a lot of really light lagers and sours, and we are especially known for our fruited sours. One of the things that really puts our sours over the top is the fact that we use all real fruit, no extracts or flavorings or anything like that. For example, we use probably close to about 700 pounds of fruit puree in our Poems at Midnight Berliner Weisse. It is all real fruit, and the only two ingredients added are the raspberries and blackberries. By using real fruit you get a lot more sensory exposure to the style, taste and visual aspect. CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR BEER IN PLACES OTHER THAN THE BREWERY? As of now, we are distributing within 27 counties in Northeast Georgia. We are in Ingles, Kroger, and almost every package store in the area. We are looking to expand our market down to the 285 perimeter and West Georgia within the next few months. ■

 Tantrum Brewing Company is located at 1939 Helen Hwy. in Cleveland. For a complete beer list and to stay up to date on events, visit TantrumBeer.com or follow them on social media at @tantrumbeer.

MEDICAL AESTHETICS OF SUWANEE ANNOUNCES NEW LOCATION

ON APRIL 1, 2021, the city of Suwanee

and surrounding areas came together to celebrate Cheers Day in honor and memory of Adam Edge, who we sadly lost to cancer last year. Adam served as Suwanee’s downtown development manager and was a beloved member of our community. The purpose of Cheers Day was to celebrate Adam’s life by spreading random acts of kindness on what would have been his 38th birthday. The community was asked to share and celebrate their acts of kindness on Facebook on April 1st with the hashtags #CheerstoAdam and #CheersDay21. If you search the Cheers Day hashtags on Facebook it brings up loving posts dedicated to the person Adam was — kind, compassionate, fun and so incredibly giving. “After a year of you leaving us on this earth, I can honestly say that not a day goes by that SOMEONE doesn't mention your name. You had that kind of impact on so many people. I love to hear how people remember you,” wrote Amy Knight Doherty, the City of Suwanee’s Events & Outreach Manager. “There is never a story that doesn't end with your big laugh. You were bigger than life and even though you are not here, you STILL figure out how to make us laugh and want to be like you — working to make this world better.” Some of Cheers Day’s random acts of kindness included City of

Local Teen Releases Song and Music Video with Anti-Bullying Message Middle School student Brodie Mullin is in many ways a typical teenager. He likes playing Fortnite and Minecraft. He spent eight years studying martial arts and earned his black belt in American Karate. Last summer he earned his open water certification for scuba diving and he looks forward to going to the open water when travel resumes. Brodie is also currently on a competitive dance team with Core Dance and Acrobatics. He takes acting lessons with The Actor’s Scene and is a cast member for Winning Feathers, which teaches public speaking and interpersonal communication skills. He wants to be a producer or director when he gets older. In addition to all of this, Brodie has also released two professional music videos. The first song is about playing video games, and his voice coach, Justin Levy of Suwanee Academy of the Arts, helped write his second song, “Warrior,” and is based on events that happened in Brodie’s life. He was bullied for his long hair and for his first single. “Warrior” is about being kind to everyone even if we don't look like them or have the same views and beliefs. Brodie also sings about being an upstander or ally to stop bullying and to let victims know to focus on supporters, follow their dreams, and not to let anyone stand in the way of their destiny. Warriors empower allies and victims. The “Warrior” video has also been nominated by the Atlanta Kidz Choice Awards, which take place May 8, for Best Music Video and Song of the Year. The song has also been submitted to the Skyline Performer Awards and the Young Artist Academy Awards. NORTH GWINNETT

LOCAL OSCAR MAYER HOTDOGGER AT THE HELM OF WIENERMOBILE TOUR ON MARCH 30,

2021, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile made the trek to Suwanee Town Center Park with one of our own at the helm. "Mayochup" Molly Swindall grew up in Johns Creek and attended the University of Georgia before becoming a Hotdogger for Oscar Mayer, or as she refers to it, “one of the lucky dogs that cut the mustard.” We got the chance to send Molly a few questions about her stint as a Hotdogger, to which she happy relished us with some insight into what it’s like to tour with one of the most recognizable automobiles driving across the country’s hot dog highways. “This job is the most incredible job in the world as we get to drive joy and happiness to people every day,” she says. According to Molly, the Wienermobile dates back to 1936, when Oscar Mayer’s nephew Carl pitched it as a way to lift the spirits of Americans during the Great Depression. “That is still our purpose today!” she says. That connection to the past is still what drives many to seek out the Wienermobile on one of its stops throughout the country. “People come up all the time and tell us about when they saw it as a child,” she says. “They bring us their whistles from the ’50s or ’60s, or they tell us about how they've never seen it before and have been waiting to for years. Additionally, people bring their kids or

grandkids with them to the Wienermobile, and it creates a new special connection for them. They talk about their parents or grandparents bringing them and how they now get to do that and one day so will their child.” The biggest perk of the job has to be all of the people she “meats” on the road. “They make this job special,” she says. "They always tell us how much joy we bring them, but they don't realize how much joy they bring us. They share stories about their lives with us that make us laugh and cry. It's always special to hear people's connection to the Wienermobile.” Molly says she’s made a BUN of memories on the road as a Hotdogger. “There is one about a little boy name Liam who lives in Santa Cruz, California,” she says. “Liam has autism and his family wanted to get him a service dog for years, but they are very expensive. When they saw we were coming in town, his mother reached out to me and we set up a fundraiser. They auctioned off rides in the Wienermobile and sold hot dogs. They ended up raising over $2,000. The day we arrived for the rides, they had the deposit down for the dog and they told me Liam would be able to get his dog in June 2021. They talked about how life changing this would be for their family. It was BUNbelievable that we got to be a part of it and that the Wienermobile could help!”
