INTRODUCTION PRINCIPLES AND RATIONALE

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

6

One of the goals of this University is to produce high-quality graduates who are trained and prepared to enter the job market. Graduates should have both a solid academic background and an employment readiness suitable for any area of business. They should be able to work well in public or private organisations as well as have the skill to pursue individual entrepreneurial goals. Graduates should possess a full array of business skills including, but not limited to, organisational, analytical, management, interpersonal and office supply management skills in order to be able to work efficiently in any workplace. Students should be able to identify their desired workplace and the type of work in which they want to engage. Appropriately trained and prepared, the graduates can quickly develop the professional maturity necessary to become valuable resources to their employer and to society as a whole. In order to accomplish this goal, the University needs to train the students to apply their knowledge in the work environment and to give them an opportunity to do so to gain valuable practical experience in an authentic business environment. Consequently, Mae Fah Luang University has established a policy which allows the students to work with organisations to gain practical experience, apply their knowledge and skill, and obtain authentic work experience through the Internship Courses. This internship will take place in either the second semester of their junior year or the summer semester of their senior year. During this internship period, the students’ advisors will visit the employers to assess and monitor the students’ performance at the work site.

Internship will also assist the University in building meaningful business relationship with participating employers. As the producers of valuable resources to our nation, these employers are important and positive models with expertise that can be used to train and teach and mentor this University’s students for the foreseeable future.

Employers are expected to pay interns at the standard minimum wage. However, if a wage is not allocated, the employers provide some alternate benefits such as accommodation, transportation, uniform, or meals during working time.

TAX BENEFITS Employers who have incur expenses due to their participation in the cooperative education internship course will be entitled to get 2 times the normal tax reduction of the following expenses; 1 — Wage paid to the cooperative education intern as stated in a contract, but no less than half of minimum wage. 2 — Accident insurance coverage. 3 — Cost of remuneration such as rewards, meals, upcountrytransportation allowance or uniforms. (However, employers must clearly state in an acceptance letter that they will absorb these expenses.) 4 — Special office supplies which are used for specific tasks during internship. Employers must clearly specify the price and number of these items. 5 — Expense on the training provided for interns.
