GRATITUDE & GRACE III

From The Editor Back so soon? Lol. For our avid readers, you know this is issue’s schedule is a little different for us as we aren’t accustomed to such a quick turnaround for another issue, but we are working to be more consistent across the board. Plus, with our new magazine subscription option, we are slated for at least four issues across 2020 and 2021. This is the first one. There are many moving parts with the magazine, so obviously, we have several interrelated goals. One of the most rewarding feelings is to see people with a copy of the magazine in their hands, reading it. With that being said, we obviously worked hard on this issue, but we also organized the issue a little differently and with more calculations. I’m excited and curious to see how it will all turn out. Meanwhile, the country and probably the world waits for Trump to concede to his loss to the new President-Elect Joe Biden, and we will soon have a woman of color Vice President in the White House. I’m not sure what to feel, to be honest. I decided that regardless of who won the presidential election, I would not allow that to interfere with how the magazine moves. Before, I used to feel as if our fate weighed heavily on the world, and while I must admit current events can still impact us, I now understand how much influence we have regarding our futures. So I am praying for the best, but as I always say, “I am the master of my fate, captain of my soul,” and so we will be watching and observing the rest of

the world but keeping our goals front and center simultaneously. Like the rest of the world, I, too, hope better things are on the horizon, but we also know there is lots of work ahead. I think it’s safe to say that the world has been through a lot this year. I just want to enjoy some good times with good people, even if that requires doing so at a distance. My 16-year old tells me all the time, “The world didn’t stop.” I agree with her, but I am still cautious and possibly overly protective of those I love and care about right now. You all are included in that number, so I encourage you not to get so relaxed that you forget we are in a pandemic right now. I also would like to update you avid readers and tell you that after 10 long years of fighting, my ex is granting me custody of my youngest daughter. It’s the thing I am most grateful for this year. It was such an out of the blue announcement that I know it must be what Terri Abney referred to as a God wink. Obviously, I am grateful for all of you and my teams as well. With all of that being said, I hope you enjoy both the issue and the holidays and stay safe. 2021 here we come! From Fancy with Love

ADVICE

4 Ways to Tackle Loneliness as an Entrepreneur BY CHRISNATHA DEROSIER

L

oneliness, as an entrepreneur, is almost a taboo topic. Still, I feel like it’s important and that we don’t talk enough about loneliness; as an entrepreneur, even we can go as far as saying loneliness as a business owner, loneliness as a creative, loneliness as a dreamer. You can experience moments of loneliness in your business as you build and as you grow. So I want to let you know that you are not alone. So let’s jump right into it. Once again, research has

shown that entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey it can be, and so loneliness leads to or can lead to depression, stress, anxiety, and can cause a range of mental illnesses. I want you to know that it does not have to be the case with you. Now let’s discuss the emotions that we go through as a business owner, as an entrepreneur, and let’s tackle them. First, what are the signs of loneliness? The signs of loneliness can range from physical symptoms, such as pains and aches, to heart palpi-

2

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 tations, panic attacks, low energy, and even lack of motivation. According to a story in The Harvest, a Harvard Business Review, half of the CEOs from the CEO snapshot survey reported experience and feelings of loneliness in their roles. Okay, so half of the CEOs that they polled reported experiencing feelings of loneliness. Now, combined with the pressures of starting a business and those of you who have started a business, you know there is pressure. There’s definitely pressure in the startup of a business and/or running a business. It’s hard to be the leader, the person responsible for the decision making, the admin, the secretary, the bookkeeper-like, everything that entrepreneurs do, because most of the time, in the beginning, you are wearing a lot of hats. So it’s tough.

If you’re working from home, that can be more isolating. Maybe for some of us introverts, we can manage that a little better, right? But if you’re an extrovert, it’s hard. It’s really hard and often as self-employed people and freelancers, you can miss the social interaction because that’s essential —meaning interaction in the sense of community you have in the workplace. So I want to share four things that can help combat and tackle loneliness, and these four things were found in a Forbes article. Grow and nurture an online community of like-minded individuals. Social media is not just for selling or marketing. But instead, I want you to start to look at it as a way to connect with other like-minded people, and you can do that through Facebook groups. I absolutely love Facebook groups because it’s a community. It’s a virtual community. You can also find communities through hashtags. Whatever you’re looking for, just go ahead and put the hashtag #podcasters;

GRATITUDE & GRACE 3 #smallbusinessowners; or #businesswomen. Search whatever specifically you want to look for in terms of a community; you can always use the hashtag on Instagram to do that as well. Also, Twitter has lists. When on Twitter, look for the lists; when on Instagram and Facebook, use the hashtags to find the communities in the groups. Okay, so you can grow and nurture an online community, I have a group, and I’m a part of some. I love it, you know, because it gives you a chance to connect with people who you may have never met before, right outside of the virtual space. Then you guys have that common thread, that common thing that glues you together, and you guys can definitely build relationships, business relationships, or what have you. So that’s one way to tackle loneliness.

on the weekends, or of some sort that you can, connect with a human being because that’s important. It will help with the feeling of loneliness. So it’s crucial for solo entrepreneurs to form real-world connections, even if it is just a quick catch up over a coffee, lunch, or what have you. I know that I’ve finally been comfortable enough to start doing some brunches—just one on one, not groups but just meeting some friends I haven’t seen in a few months. Of course, we practiced social distancing and wore our face coverings but ensured that we still connected. There are also virtual coffee dates that you can set up, which are essential. But in addition to that, find a safe way to have a real live person or people with whom you can connect.

“It’s crucial for solo entrepreneurs to form real-world connections”

The second way is to go out and network and make real world human connections. Networking in person might be a little bit challenging, depending on where in the country that you live in the fact that we’re in the middle of a pandemic. Please use wisdom, adhere to the CDC guidelines, practice social distancing, and wear face coverings and masks. I just wanted to insert that disclaimer, but depending on how you do it and what the goal is for you, do this responsibly, if you’re comfortable, or when it gets better to do so, go out and network and make real-world human connections.

Some ideal groups for those who like the outdoors are hiking and biking riding. I have seen people join communities of hikers. They get together and meet up for a hike every weekend. Or maybe find a group ride bikes together, you know, perhaps on a bike trail in the park, or something like that. So there are so many different ways to connect. There are so many other examples. But we must make those human connections, or if you are freelancing and working alone at home, that you find an outlet, maybe

The third way to tackle feeling lonely as an entrepreneur business owner is to celebrate your achievements. Yes, have a party, even if it’s just you, or have a virtual celebration. I have been to so many virtual birthday parties and baby showers the last few months, and they have all been amazing, but celebrate your achievements as much as you focus on your to do list. If we’re honest, I know I’m guilty of this having a to do list and just working hard to check off as much as I can on that list. As important as that is, it’s also vital that I take a break and go out for a walk; that I enjoy the great weather; when the

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 sun is out that I treat me to ice cream; that I go out and treat me to a nice dinner; that I maybe take a trip to the spa- whatever you’re comfortable doing. I know it’s a pandemic, but you must practice some type of self-care or something that makes you feel good or something that makes you happy because you accomplished your milestones. Alright, so the fourth way is to find an accountability partner. Yes, yes, yes- it’s essential. I know that some of us are good at working alone. Personally, I don’t need someone to check my work because I am goal-oriented, right? That’s me and my personality.

“You must practice some type of selfcare or something that makes you feel good” I’m goal-oriented, so all I need is my to do list, and I will work on the list, right? But accountability is even better. Because even if I feel like getting off track, or I feel like pushing it off, I know that I am accountable to my accountability partner. So that pushes me to stay the course. So for all of you, I’m encouraging you, whether you’re goal-oriented, or you are people-structured, or whatever the case is, find an accountability partner, aka a business bestie. Okay, so the one thing that many solo entrepreneurs have reported missing the most is having the accountability of working in an office or corporate team and the way it can motivate and drive them forward. So this is why it can help to find someone who’s in a different, but related business or maybe someone who is at a similar stage of their entrepreneur journey, someone who you can

relate to and find it easy to communicate with, or that can even be a coach, right? If you have a business coach, a life coach, an accountability coach, or a mentor, they can be a partner and keep you accountable, but get you an accountability partner. So once again, let’s go over those four ways to combat loneliness as an entrepreneur. Number one to grow and nurture an online community of like-minded individuals. Number two, go out and network and make real-world human connections. Number three, celebrate achievements as much as you focus on your to-do list. Number four to find an accountability partner, aka a business bestie. So, everyone, these are just a few ways where you can really start tackling feeling lonely because it doesn’t have to be lonely at the top. And as we keep each other accountable, that means you won’t be at the top by yourself. As you move up, you are pulling people up with you because we want to get this money, honey, right? We want to make an impact; we want to make a difference. We want to grow our businesses, and we want to do well. Therefore, let’s go ahead and do it, and I want you to know that you’re not alone, but we need to kick those emotions in the butt.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

Kai A. Pineda

BY CHRISTINA WOODARD

K

ai A. Pineda has been in ministry for 20 years and is a pastor, teacher, author, and worship leader. She desires to see God’s heart revealed to humanity so that people step into the freedom of God and not the traditions of the church. Kai longs for an encounter to happen within the Body of Christ, where we exchange our agendas for His, pursue His love, and Prepare The Way for His return. She has committed her life to be an ambassador for Christ and to help in leading this and the next generation into a beautiful relationship with Jesus Christ. Her debut book, Dear Church – Vol l, released on October 3rd, 2019, is a letter to the Body of Christ about unity and our need for one another. She is currently preparing to release Volume II while also leading a faith-based coaching program. Kai has been married to her husband, Pastor Alexander Pineda, for 11 years, and together they plant home fellowships within the U.S. and abroad. They founded Kingdom House of Worship in 2013 and currently reside in both Los Angeles, CA, and St. Louis, MO. Meet this woman of God below.

Christina: Please share a little bit about your albums, “Speechless” and “Unshakeable.” Kai: I recorded “Speechless” in 2011 and Unshakeable in 2016. Speechless was a live recording, while “Unshakeable” was a studio recording. I wrote most songs on each album and did all vocals for “Unshakable.” Both are praise and worship albums with songs honoring God.

Christina: Now, you have your debut book as well. Tell our readers a little about Dear Church-Vol I and where can they purchase it? Kai: What began as an inner conversation with God quickly turned into real conversations with others seeking answers. While the climate of our world shifted and racial tension heightened, I wondered where the church was. I decided to write a letter. The letter was not like my journals that always started with, Dear God. This time I would address the body I desperately desired to see transformed. Dear Church is not only a call to action but a heartfelt message every follower of Jesus Christ should read. It is available at www.dearchurchbook.com and Amazon.

Christina: You and your husband founded the House of Worship in 2013. Why did you decide to open up your ministry? Did anything significant happen for you all to say, hey, we need to open a church? Kai: Kingdom House of Worship Global (KHOW GLOBAL) was birthed in prayer as we were gathered with our family and friends at the beginning of 2009. God downloaded the vision to us, and we waited until He set the time for us to begin.

Christina: The two of you plant home fellowships all over the world. Please explain to our readers what that is. Kai: Kingdom House of Worship (KHOW GLOBAL) follows the pattern of The Acts Church (Acts w:42-47), where the early church (people not a building) met in homes and centered their lives around three aspects: study of the Word, prayer, and fellowship. As a Fellowship, we go into communities, plant a fellowship within a home, and set leaders in place to lead with weekly bible studies and weekly connections. We pray and go within the

to know about?

Christina: Do you have any upcoming events or projects you would like our readers

Kai: In April of 2020, I launched a six-month coaching program called “Chosen & Brave. Initially, I only promoted to a handful of women and was surprised to have 34 women join. We will be promoting to the public starting this December for our January sessions. A waiting list is available now on our site. I will also be releasing Dear

Church Volume II in December of 2020. Finally, I will be launching a ministry consulting and church planting coaching program called Vision Management in 2021. Connect with Kai: Website: www.kaiapineda.com Instagram: @iamkaiapineda Facebook: mrs.kai.a.pineda

9 Tips to Keep Your Hair Laid During Season Change by Sharona Luke

T

he seasons are changing y’all! The leaves are changing colors, it’s getting cooler, the air is crisp...and so is your hair! Now’s the time to decide if you’re getting saucy blowouts for the holidays, or you don’t want to be bothered and get a good ol’ protective style. The change in the weather can really make you indecisive about what you want your crown to look like. And depending on what you’ve been doing recently in these COVID streets, you might just opt-out for the rest of 2020. As #YourFriendlyNeighborhoodStylist I’m here to tell you, you have to do something. DIY is a good way to feel your hair out (pun intended) and see what products and styles work best for you. We definitely need to make sure you’re shampooing and moisturizing. Catch some self-care and give yourself a deep condition/nap situation with your favorite fuzzy robe on, Sade in the background, Nag Champa incense burning, and a glass of Hennessy within arms reach... Just me? Didn’t think so. Below are some more good tips for keeping your hair laid. A good combo for home care is: - A clarifying shampoo - A moisturizing shampoo

- Conditioner - Oil for your scalp If you want to make it easy, a simple twist out or roller set will solve your problems. If you’re the type that likes a challenge, YouTube U has you covered. But if the thought of detangling your hair gives you anxiety attacks, a simple call to your stylist will suffice. Make sure you book for a conditioning or moisturizing treatment as well to help combat frizz and breakage in these strange weather conditions. When getting a blowout, make sure a thermal protectant is being used with the hot tools. If you’re straightening at home, please make sure the flat iron isn’t too hot. We’re not frying chicken, and multiple passes are just as damaging. If you plan on going the protective route, make sure you talk to your stylist about care for your hair and the style you’re wearing. Remember, wearing any style past the expiration date is no longer protective. No matter how good it still looks. Make sure you can still access your scalp to moisturize it during your wear. And if all else fails, treat yourself to a cute hat and a pair of boots...you deserve it.

et me go ahead and put this out there; I am NOT licensed to speak or diagnose anything with anyone. I just have my opinions. Also, with that, I’m fairly certain that doing anything in “The Rona” times is a COMPLETELY different experience than it would have been otherwise. With that being said, my first six calendar months of marriage have been an eventful few years “In the Year of Our Rona” time. There’s something

special about getting married in a pandemic and immediately becoming coworkers that get stuck in traffic coming out of the kitchen or that need to reserve the conference room that doubles as a second bedroom/home gym and yoga studio. I wouldn’t want to quarantine with anyone else, but I’ve learned in a short but long six months is that sometimes six feet isn’t enough, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Again, this is all just my perspective and opinion, but I feel as if people shouldn’t have to alter who they fundamentally are once you all are married. If we’re talking about picking up or dropping a habit that’s detrimental to the overall relationship, then, by all means, change it. But if we’re looking at a fundamental characteristic of YOU as an individual, maybe there’s a larger issue.

Personally, it took a while to understand that just because I’m married now doesn’t mean I flip a switch and become “Prototype Mr.Husband 2.0”. It’s my actions and the intention behind the efforts that are supposed to change. The fact that she said yes to my proposal means she at least likes me, right? So my only job now is to keep improving and give her no doubt that she

For example, some of the most common advice I’ve gotten about being married is to continue as if we’re dating in order to stay married. Outside looking in? Makes zero sense. Inside looking out? Easily some of the best advice out there. Dating is like bartering, give a little here and take a little there, find the middle and do it all again on the next date. Six months in, and I’m finding that marriage isn’t much different. The only alteration is that now instead of doing it in hopes of another date, you’re doing it to keep your spouse on the date. Let’s say you pulled out her chair while y’all dated because you thought it was the nice thing to do, and it would catch her attention. Now that you’re married, the precedent is there from dat-

She might be opting out pretty soon. There’s a conscious effort that goes into everything daily to maintain the relationship and grow with it. Each day is truly a choice to stay married, the same way it was a choice to get married. The title of being married is simply that, a title. It only gets power from the people who hold the title and how they demonstrate or use it. I feel that no two marriages are the same, that there’s not a generic version of a lifelong commitment. I’ve only been married for six months, and I’d say it’s evident that there isn’t the magic dust or the manual I was promised in the brochure. Those rainy days are definitely going to come, that snowstorm is on the way, the sock tornado mixed in with a dirty dish flood? You best believe it. But you CHOOSE to make it through to the other side because it’s just not worth it when looking at the bigger picture. Nobody wants to be mad intentionally, life is too short, and time is ticking whether we know it or not. A few minutes of a heated conversation about who did or did not leave the bathroom light on is not worth ruining a whole day, so you can’t let it get that far. Even if my wife is wrong (which I learned on Day 1 that that’s not even a

possibility, but I digress), it’s better to have grace than to hold a grudge. Again, I’m only six months into it, and I know I haven’t made a dent on the number of lessons there are to learn and situations to go through but considering the state of the world and the mandates we’ve been doubling down on our time. Luckily for me, with that time, I’ve had the opportunity to improve myself and work on ways to strengthen us as a unit. If there were anything of value I have to offer from what I’ve learned so far, it would definitely be to begin the art of listening. Listening with the intent to understand and not the intent to respond has been the single most productive skill we’ve found. It applies to literally everything from verbal conversations to nonverbal and physical cues. Listening is the key. Admittingly that’s been difficult for me, but it’s worth the effort, the feeling of being able to read your significant other instead of having to break it all down verbally is top tier. Breaking it all down sometimes is needed, but it can become mundane and annoying in a sense. The less time you spend “talking about talking,” the more time you have actually to communicate and progress. You’ve heard it once, and you’ll hear it again, COMMUNICATION IS KEY.

WEIGHT LOSS

The Simple Solution to Pandemic Weight Gain BODY SCULPTING WITH MIKKI TIQUIR’A By Francheska “Fancy” Felder

A

nother side effect of this pandemic has been weight gain. Most of us have admitted that we have gained more weight than we are comfortable with at some time or another. Well, the cool thing about being an editor is learning about new people and products. With that being said, I’d like to tell you about one solution to your weight problem, body sculpting. I spoke with body sculpting tech and guru Mikkie Tiquir’a, owner of Dream Body Studio

in Atlanta, GA. The 28-year old introduced the Georgia area to the procedure, and it has taken off. She now even has fat-burner machines that clients can use at home to avoid office visits, but she is also franchising the business. Here’s the rundown. Mikkie explains body sculpting as a non-surgical liposuction procedure that she calls “lunchtime lipo.” It helps contour and shapes the body to get rid of fat cells naturally. “So what it does is use a probe and a laser to sculpt you and pretty much do everything

can’t get out. Or you know, just have that access skin because we also have a skin tightening procedure. So we have all the procedures you need just to get that extra fat off because everyone can’t do lipo or everyone just doesn’t want to go through lipo.”

that you could get with lipo without, you know, going under the knife.” Continuing, Mikkie says, “It’s not as intense at all, but it’s definitely similar. It’s totally natural. There are no side effects. So they’re trendy, and it’s climbing up the ladder to be worldwide popular.” According to Mikkie, body sculpting is more ideal for those who do not want to or can’t undergo surgery. Other ideal candidates are as she describes them, are those people that don’t have that much to get sucked out.” She continued, “Like, it’s great for people who work out all the time and have an extra bottom pouch that they

Like liposuction, body sculpting also targets the fat in certain areas, so other ideal candidates are those who aren’t desiring to lose too much weight. Your BMI really plays a part in things. For patients who may be far from their proper BMI, Mikkie first suggests weight loss supplements. Dream Body Studios also offers these too! The procedure isn’t long or strenuous, and patients can return to their normal activities upon completion. However, Mikkie suggests drinking lots of water before the procedure and working out can also help you prepare, but she says lymphatic drainage will occur naturally. Clients see more and more results with each session, and most only need two to three sessions before they achieve their desired results. Sessions can run about $180-$200, but right now, they have a package that includes three sessions for $485.

frey’s hit television drama Greenleaf, directed by Clement Virgo, and recurred on the first season. Ms. Abney’s other television credits include Donald Glover’s FX Show Atlanta, a guest-starring arc on Game of Silence, and BET HER’s One Crazy Christmas. Terri’s first feature film Victoria is in development, which she pens with her writing partner Rashonda Joplin. Terri recently participated in a live staged reading for the New Normal Series, Broken Barriers. She directed a stellar cast, who read a short version adaptation of her feature project Victoria in front of top industry professionals. Between gigs, Terri continues to train as an artist and student of life. Lawrencia: What is your SwagHer? What makes Terri, Terri? Terri: My SwagHer is my love of people, confidence, resilience, and dedication. I don’t stop at or believe in the word “no.” There may be obstacles, but each detour is rerouting me to where I am destined to be. Lawrencia: You’re a D.C. girl and studied acting at the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Clark Atlanta University. How was your childhood, and who were you inspired by in the world of T.V.? Terri: My childhood was modest. Like many children in the 90’s, I was raised by my grandmother. She had a deep affinity for television and watching movies. This was a

20

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 way in which we bonded. I developed a love and desire to be a part of the industry by simply spending time with her and being mesmerized by the characters on screen. Lawrencia: Greenleaf was more than just a show to viewers and personally helped me cope with the sudden loss of my father. You were an integral part of the show; tell us about how Greenleaf came about and how was the experience? Terri: It definitely is a magical show

and has been healing for many people. I am honored to have been a part of the cast. I am grateful to hear how it helped you cope with the loss of your father. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. I auditioned for the show through the Fincannon’s, who had hired me more than once, and I was cast within a week. For me, this was a dream come true, and I equate it to a God wink moment. I grew up watching Oprah Winfrey and wanting to emulate her. I even wrote her a letter at nine telling her I wanted to be in showbiz. At that time, I didn’t understand manifestations, but now I realize that I set intention years prior, and it was brought into my reality. I am still in awe of how it all came to be. Lawrencia: Of all the roles you have played in the past, which has been your favorite? Terri: I love all of the characters that I have been able to play for so many different reasons. If I had to narrow it down, I would say Garnett Jeter in Jeff Nichols’s dynamic film LOVING. This project for me served as an

GRATITUDE & GRACE 21 overall masterclass, and the camaraderie amongst the cast is unparalleled. Also, Faith Greenleaf in the hit television show Greenleaf, for the aforementioned reasons. The cherry on the sundae was Oprah Winfrey was my boss! Pinch me! Lawrencia: You recently starred alongside Gary Carr

“I LOVE roles that allow me to morph into characters” and Ian McShane in Dan Pritzker’s Film “Bolden” set in 1906, based on the Jazz Musician Buddy Bolden premiered in theaters in May of this year. How was it? Terri: I LOVE roles that allow me to morph into characters. This project was that for me. It’s a period piece! Gritty in that I got to play a brothel worker, heroin addict, and kill someone on screen. Not to forget to mention the cast was a blast to work with. Gary Carr is immensely talented and such a gracious actor to share the screen with. Lawrencia: Terri, your feature film ‘Victoria’ is now in development. Can you tell us what your inspiration behind the film is? Terri: Absolutely! The film is a true story based on

my mother’s struggle with addiction, which came as a bi-product of trying to save her marriage. It ties in the theme of generational curses and cycles amongst the female thread within a family. Lawrencia: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Terri: I see myself working on projects consistently in television in film. Also, creating my own projects. I envision myself with my own production company surrounded by women/people of color. I envision a studio in the not too distant future creating content that tells Black folk’s narrative from our perspective in a real yet compassionate way. Lawrencia: Let’s talk about beauty and fashion. Who is your favorite designer, and why? Terri: Here are my top fashion designers in no particular order: Kerby Jean-Raymond (Pyer Moss), Aurora James (Brother Vellies), Romeo Hunte (Romeo Hunte), Carly Cushnie (Cushnie), and LaQuan Smith (LaQuan Smith). One, they are all BOMB and incredibly talented. They are also people of color, and I love everything about the U.S. I look forward to being able to hire each of them in the future for signature pieces. I gawk at their work on red carpets. Lawrencia: Do you have any skincare routines as you have great skin? Terri: You are really sweet! Thank you! My skincare routine is rather basic. I create my own products and only use natural ingredients like African black soap, raw shea butter, olive oil, sweet almond oil, and infuse them with different essential oils and fresh herbs/flowers. Lawrencia: Finally, what actress would play you in a movie, and why? Terri: Angela Davis! She is an overall badass. I am obsessed with her and what she stood for. It would be the highest honor to play her in a film! THE HISTORY OF KWANZAA by Patrice Rivers

K

wanzaa’s name derives from the phrase “matunda ya Kwanza,” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. This African culture holiday is from December 26th to January 1st and was created by American Professor Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. Anyone who wishes to celebrate this holiday can celebrate in their way. Celebrations include songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and an enormous traditional meal. One of the seven nights, the family gathers, and a child lights one of the candles on the kinara (candleholder); then, a discussion about one of the seven principles takes place. These

principles are called Nguzo Saba (seven principles in Swahili). They are values of African culture, contributing to the building and reinforcing the African Americans’ community. Kwanzaa has seven basic symbols that represent the values and concepts of African culture. An African feast called a karamu is held on December 31st. Below are the seven principles: Unity: Umoja Self-determination: Kujichagulia Collective Work and Responsibility: Ujima

The feast’s focal point is a one-pot stew or braises from traditions like Ghanaian Groundnut Stew, West Indian or South African curry, Philadelphia Pepper Pot Stew, Jambalaya, and Nigerian Jollof Rice. Many people may ask what they should wear for the whole week of Kwanzaa. A lot of people celebrate by decorating their home in African art as well as Kwanzaa colors such as green, black, and red. Traditional African clothing can be a colorful wrap for women called a Kaftan, and for men, a colorful dashiki and a hat called a kufi.

ia Dias is the owner of Girl Cave Los Angeles, a chain of beauty supplies and lifestyle brands in Los Angeles. The beauty boss is currently expanding her brand by franchising. The entrepreneur, real estate mogul, former model, mother, and wife has been a prominent figure and voice in the community advocating for women’s empowerment and realistic beauty in the industry. Originally from Inglewood, California, the business-savvy entrepreneur wears many hats, including co-owning and operating KLC Consultants, a medical staffing company, with her husband in the spring of 2020, Dias joined the cast of season two of Bravo’s hit TV show Married To Medicine Los

Angeles. Lia strongly believes that the stories of Black doctors and successful Black women must be told. Get better acquainted with the Married to Medicine star. Fancy: Had you always had an interest in the beauty industry? Also, did you ever have an interest in reality TV? Lia: I’ve always liked hair and makeup. When I was younger, I got into modeling. Being a retailer in the beauty industry was not something I had ever dreamed of for myself because I never thought it was possible. I also never imagined I would be on a reality show ... However, I am not a stranger to being in front of the camera. Fancy: While more online black-owned beauty supply stores are coming about, why does this appear to be a challenging industry to break into? What are the challenges? Lia: Breaking into this industry was extremely difficult for me. I would say the most significant chal-

SWAGHER WINTER 2020

lenge has been a lack of willingness from vendors to work with us. It’s hard to stock a store if distributors won’t open accounts for your store or give your flexibility in terms. Many times vendors asked for tens of thousands of dollars to open up a single account. That is a large obstacle for small businesses. Fancy: What inspired your By Black Beauty Supply Pitch Competition, and how did it go? Lia: I get so many requests from up and coming brands to be placed inside my retail stores. I thought the best way was to pick from those serious enough to go through a competition. During the competition, I am providing feedback to the brands based on my experience. It is helpful for these brands to hear from a retail perspective on how they can improve. It is also great to give new brands an opportunity. Fancy: You’ve mentioned watching yourself on TV and noticing how you come across? Has that caused you to change in any way?

Lia: Watching myself on TV forced me to see the things I do and don’t like about myself. It causes you to think about how people experience you. It has caused me to listen more and try to understand other perspectives before responding. Fancy: Having now experienced reality tv, do you think there is more sisterhood to it than what is being depicted, or viewers may know, or would you say it is much like the drama viewers often witness? Lia: There is a sisterhood, but there is also conflict. In my opinion, that is the reality of most relationships. I think our show trends towards a more positive side of our relationships, and I like that. Cursing people out and flipping tables is not really who we are. Fancy: How did you and your husband Colin meet? Lia: Now that’s an interesting question, ha! I was actually on a blind double date with a friend of mine who was setting me up. It was a bar in the

GRATITUDE & GRACE 29 Pasadena area. It was a disaster from the time I got there! I left during the date to have a drink at the bar, and Colin slipped right in. Fancy: Has being on TV impacted your marriage any? What is it like sharing personal moments on tv? Lia: Being on the show actually helped my marriage. My husband was super supportive, and to have him support me while facing a demanding schedule made me appreciate him even more. I know the thought is that reality tv destroys relationships, but that hasn’t been our experience. I am so comfortable sharing personal moments on TV because I am the same way all the time. What you see on TV is how I am

I don’t make the right choices and miss out on work opportunities or moments with my kids. It’s never perfect. But, I try to have grace with myself and do my best to maintain peace.

“Watching myself on TV forced me to see the things I do and don’t like about myself.”

Lia: Due to Covid and my husband being an essential worker, we will have a very low key holiday. I am planning on just having family time with my husband and kids. Fancy: What does this new administration and having Senator Kamala Harris as the new Vice-President-elect mean to you? Lia: To be honest, I have anxiety for her. I am proud and happy, but I understand how women in power, specifically Black women, tend to be torn down and not built up. Lia plans to return for Season 3 of Married to Medicine Los Angeles, but she and her castmates are currently awaiting the final word from Bravo and to resume filming. every day. It’s easy for me to be myself and to be transparent. Fancy: How do you practice gratitude, and did you always do so? Lia: I have learned over the years to practice gratitude with myself first. That is by being thankful for the small things and having grace with myself when I don’t reach all my goals. I make a point to take days off from my demanding schedule, ask for help when I need it, and say no when I can’t meet an obligation. It is liberating! Fancy: How do you balance work and family, or do you seek harmony instead? Lia: To be honest, I haven’t figured out how to have balance or harmony! It is a constant juggle and give and take, and a lot of times, I fall short. Sometimes

Fancy: What does family mean to you? Lia: Family is my safe place. I deal with so much junk and drama throughout the day. I love to come home to peace and understanding. My favorite thing to do is to connect with my kids and husband after a long day. Fancy: How do you all plan to spend them? Do you have any unique traditions?

Christina: You teach women how to unleash the queen within. Can you explain to our readers what you mean by that? Kim: Yes, I teach all of my clients and ambitious women that God hand-selected them for a special assignment. They have royal DNA flowing through their veins. Every morning when they wake up, I want them to visualize themselves wearing a heavenly crown. I never want anyone to allow others to knock their crown off. Choosing to take the High Road in life is not always easy, but it is always worth it. When I teach about unleashing the queen within, this reminds women of their spiritual inheritance as a daughter of our heavenly Father. Christina: Please explain a little bit about your programs, “Lack to Luxury” and “God Size Assignment.” Kim: My “Lack to Luxury” online program is designed for the individual who is trapped in a vicious cycle of lack spiritually, emotionally, physically, and financially. Lack stems from a poverty mindset. I create unique strategic steps for my clients by mastering the art of facilitating systematic processes to enhance their work ethic performance, which will increase their growth mindsets. I transition their mental patterns to think bigger, so they will achieve greater. God size assignment is a product that teaches clients how to step out of their human ability and to allow God to take the pilot seat in their life. We often try

Christina: What are three things about yourself that you would never change no matter what? Kim: I would never change my journey of ups and downs in life, my abundant mindset of thinking bigger than others at times, and the lessons I have grown from.

Christina: You have a slogan, “Crown On.” How important is that slogan to you and your business? Kim: “Crown On” is the slogan God gave me many years ago when I began coaching. It signifies the power that we hold within us as royalty. We have to remember; God gave us the crown, and if he gave it to us, that’s extremely significant to uphold. Keep your crown on, walk with your head held high, and maintain a high level of integrity. Never lower your head and look down because if you do, your crown will fall off. Live your life as a testimony; SHOW people the right way to live. STOP only talking about it. Christina: You are also a radio host of Brown Suga Radio. What did you decide to host a radio show?

GRATITUDE & GRACE 35 What inspired you? Kim: I began Brown Suga Radio in August 2007. It started as something fun to do as a hobby. As I realized a few months later, my audience grew tre-

“I knew then God had an important message for me to share.” mendously, and the show took off to become a top featured show on Blog Talk Radio. I knew then God had an important message for me to share. I loved interacting with the listeners and commentating with my guest co-host. Although we had celebrity appearances on the radio show, what meant the most to me was the changed lives. The people whose hope was reignited and hearts were touched. Christina: Who is someone you admire and look up to in your life? Kim: I admire Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey tremendously. These two women have always been iconic when it comes to their legendary roles as powerful black women. Their grace, intelligence, style, and elegance separate them apart from the ordinary woman. I look up to them because they symbolize the true meaning of what an ambitious woman looks like, talks like, and behaves like. Christina: Do you have any upcoming events or projects you would like our readers to know about? n the year that will be defined by the tumultuous socio-economic pressures and grief brought on us by the Covid 19 pandemic, Black Americans have felt more burdened by racism in light of police officers around the nation who continue to murder unarmed Black men and women. Will racism against the Afro-American community ever cease to exist? His name was George Floyd. His final cries for his mother while an officer killed him by holding his knee on his neck were heard not only throughout America but also launched multiple anti-police brutality protests in cities across the world. Her name was Breonna Taylor. The special prosecutor appointed to her unarmed killing in Louisville is a Black male, a Republican Black male. It seems as if the ones that hang the noose look exactly like how we did when the white guy won, right? Maybe. Today is November 9th. Three days ago, America elected a new President and Vice President; her name is Kamala Harris. So as we live and breathe as Black skinned folks

around this nation, we are expanding our visibility simultaneously, still chanting ‘Black Lives Matter.’ Only in America! This magazine itself is owned and operated by Black people. We are everywhere, yet it always seems like our lives need to be publicly promoted for protection. Maybe it’s our fault. If the people in Louisville paid attention to politics before March 2020, Daniel Cameron wouldn’t have gotten the votes he needed to be appointed a special prosecutor. If we voted the way we did three days ago in 2016, then more Americans would be alive in this pandemic. Are we reactive in our lives or proactive? What is the value of your life if skin color is enough to end it? These are the questions I ask myself daily, am I doing enough? Are they? I’m asking a lot of questions in this piece be-

Obama was a threat to the establishment, even though he is a part of their establishment. Do you guys remember when they shut down the country? Did you ever hear of that stuff any other time in your lifetime? You can hear the tone in their actions. Exactly.

cause we’ve all learned something this year. It might take us a little longer to process what has happened, which is normal, but we have shown strength in places we once saw weakness. Even within the activist community, protesting in the pandemic was a health risk, but we took it because what is air without freedom? Death. It has been the year of figuring it all out. If

“What is air without freedom? Death.” our government drops the ball, communities will rally to help individuals nearby. We’ve seen this behavior before, like Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Maria, that hit Puerto Rico during natural disasters. We are strong. You are strong. Many feel like there is a race war pending in the underworld of America, but I beg to differ. I think we’ve been fighting this invisible civil war since 2008. Trump and others are a response to the fear of Black empowerment.

I learn from Obama’s words, well to a greater degree, his wife Michelle, but same. They are honest, and they are us. These two honestly give me hope to see the greatness in others as far as political change goes. Criminal justice reform is where the work ends, but it begins dismantling white privilege. That is why President Biden needed to run with a person of color. We are digging in our heels to prevent the next hashtag or tags (lemme keep it really real), which means we don’t just speak out when something is trending. We hold power to account by showing up at the polls, writing letters to their state offices, showing up at rallies, and never letting social media or the nonsense of our distractions ever get in the way of our awareness. The next hashtag can be me. What are you doing about it?

WONDER WOMAN

LACORA STEPHENS BY CHRISTINA WOODARD

LaCora Stephens is a friendly and familiar face frequently gracing us on the red carpet scene and local television. She has hosted exclusive interviews, onset visits, and popular events with major networks such as OWN, FOX, Sony, Oxygen, and BET, all of which led to her appearance as host and executive producer on Arroyo Channel 32, The YES! Show: Young, Entertaining & Saved! As a young, Christian single, LaCora proves that positive images and conversation can still make good for television. Raised in Florida’s sunshine state, this southern girl with a big

smile and a personality to match holds a degree in theatre education with seven years of professional teaching experience. She is currently a graduate student enhancing her communication skills for international ventures. Christina: What is your SwagHer? What makes LaCora, LaCora? LaCora: This is so hard to answer. My first thoughts were my confidence, tenacity, endurance, fairness,

curiosity, the “love yous” from my parents and family, the jokes with my sisters, my grandma’s smile, and my nana’s laugh. But then, I was like, “I don’t know if that sounds right,” so my mind went to the green grass and hoods of Duval county. Mosquitoes, green trees, flying roaches, and railroad tracks in my downsouth living made me down to earth. My experience at FAMU gave me moxie. And God, well, He didn’t bless me with the ability to sing, solely to keep me humble. Teehee!

LaCora: The experience is always so different, so I go with a mindset to do my job and learn. As a former educator, I look to evolve and grow continuously. I’m reminded that celebrities are “people” just like you and me. One time, Jenifer Lewis ran to my microphone with full energy saying, “YES! The YES! Show! YES! Darling, Talk to Me!” We laughed, and then she began to tell me how she suffered from bi-polar and shared her story and testimony; I was reminded of their humanity. They sit so high sometimes; we forget that we experience some of the same struggles. Or sometimes the experience is peer focused. My fellow journalists make the experience so wonderful at times, especially when the celebs aren’t so nice. The Jasmine Brand once taught

Zon D’Amour taught me technical skills for my camera. Danielle Young taught sheer kindness and joy to our fellow reporters go a long way! Many people are always interested in celebrities, but the real stars are sometimes the ones asking the questions. Christina: How do you like working as a host and executive producer? Is it hard? Do you sometimes get overwhelmed? LaCora: I love being a host and a producer! Imagine creating an idea and developing it from the ground up or talking to some of your lifetime heroes and sheroes. Hours can get long sometimes, events and celebs can be exhausting, but it’s nothing like seeing

the fruit of your labor. Because I see all parts of content creation and development for my projects like The YES! Show or Relationship DEEP DIVE, I can stay up until 5 am, sometimes editing, writing, or scouting. I get so angry sometimes because I’m hungry and tired, but I keep doing it. I keep going. Yes, I need a reminder sometimes, so I glance at a handwritten card I keep next to my laptop, “Fall in love with the journey.” It can be overwhelming for sure, but the destination is so worth it! Christina: As a host, I’m sure you’ve been around several celebrities. Who was the nicest star you’ve met? LaCora: Great question! Everyone always wants to know who was the meanest, which I’ll share that list after the interview, lol. I’m kidding. Only my family, friends, and red carpet hosts know those names but, I digress. The nicest stars I’ve met have been Cece Winans, Taraji P. Henson, DeVon Franklin, Cedric the Entertainer, and Yvette Nicole Brown. I’ll never

Y’all! Do you know how that made me feel? This is not normal on carpets at all. She will forever be cool in my eyes. But you know what? Each and everyone I mentioned just was as friendly, kept the convo going, complimented my skills, and/or have shared and reposted my coverage. They weren’t pretentious, arrogant, rude, or act like I haven’t interviewed them “fifty-leven” times. Just awesome, friendly, and nice people. Christina: You have a degree in Theatre Education. What persuaded you to go that route? LaCora: Picture it -no, not Sicily, but you see where I’m going with the Golden Girl reference. It was a perfect evening in Tallahassee on Florida A & M’s campus. The theatre department is known as “The Essential Theatre” put on “Dearly Departed.” Talented young actors graced the stage with comedic chops that SNL couldn’t touch. The lead actor, Charles Wesley Lattimore Jr, was such a natural. I hung on to his every word. Before I knew it, I whispered to myself, “I can do this.” After the standing ovation, I told him how great he was. He asked me my name and major and suggested that I talk to the director, Luther Wells, about my major options. So, I did. Mr. Wells set an appointment with me and realized I expressed interest in my initial college application. He said Theatre Performance, Theatre Business, Theatre Education, and Technical Theatre were my options. I went with education for the security of employment, to be honest. But working with children grows on you; these little rascals are pretty awesome., so education is a massive part of me now. Christina: You label yourself as a Christian single. Have you had any problems in the dating world because of that? LaCora: Being a Christian single is hard, and maybe not for the reasons you’re thinking. Many fake Christians will come out of the woodwork disguising themself as holy to get in your graces. Some will even go to the extent of marrying you just to have a

“good” woman in their life for the facade of others. It’s sick. A lot of wolves are in the congregation and sometimes in the pulpit. And then some Believers are too sanctified and holy for their own good. I’m a girl from the hood that’s educated, opinionated, a little loud during movies, and I like fitted skirts. Everything about what I just mentioned may be too much for a holy roller, so they spend most of their time in the relationship trying to teach you to speak in tongues. It’s team Too Much at times, which will most likely be written in some form of entertainment as I did with my short film Dating & Waiting and the new series Relationship DEEP DIVE. Just keep me in prayer, child. Christina: What advice would you give young, single, Christian women in today’s dating world? LaCora: My biggest advice for any young single woman is to be YOU. Forget the facade, the etiquette, and God forbid the desperation. Know who you are and what you want before you go out painting the town red with these jokers. Remember what I told you earlier, there are wolves among us, sis. Don’t waste your time on them. Okay? As you date, don’t rush, and please ask God for discernment and not to be fooled. Ask God to reveal his heart to you, and whatever you do, don’t seek a man. Nope, simply put yourself in his presence while you’re feeling your best and most comfortable. And ladies, don’t just ask God for a husband, no ma’am, we don’t do that anymore. Ask God specifically for what you want. For example, I told God that whoever I marry will be a reflection of Ephesians 5:25-27. Christina: Who or What inspires you? FIVE TRUTHS ABOUT LIVING WITH HIV By Nakeisa Jackson

Why am I here at 8 am? I have a class soon,” that was the thought that crosses my mind as the middle-aged bald man read me this doctor’s report. So far, everything has read “negative.” In this instance, “negative” was a good thing. Yesterday on the phone, he said he had something to report. Again I sat and thought to myself, “they do things really differently at the health department. My doctor back in Atlanta never called for negative results”. My thoughts were interrupted by three words “Your HIV results are positive.” Everything paused; it seemed like the world just stopped. He must have the wrong girl. I did my due

diligence to get tested and wear protection. Well, most times. When the doctor read the results to me, I was 19 at the time. I was in disbelief. How could it happen to me? I was a high achieving student, a community advocate for youth, and college to be a construction manager at the time. Things like this didn’t happen to me, but it did. According to the CDC, 1 in 9 women living with HIV don’t know their status. I was apart of that number until I got tested. At that point, I had been HIV positive for about three months. I only went to the health department for birth control and hoping to clear up another issue unrelated to STDs.

GRATITUDE & GRACE 47 Instead, I found out about my status. I immediately and stigma associated reminded me so much of fell into a depression that was hard to climb out HIV. Why? People judged people who choose not of. I already had an idea of what an HIV positive to wear masks and blamed them for the spread woman went through, and now I was the same type of Covid. SWAGHER WINTER 2020 not walking around with a certain look. It doesn’t discriminate based on age, religion, marital status, or sexual orientation. This is why you must get tested every three to six months to stay abreast of your status. Fact Number Two: You can have an HIV-negative baby and spouse. With advances in treatment, you sure can have a baby and not transmit HIV to the baby or your partner. Women and men living with HIV don’t have to stop their lives due to their diagnosis. Now research shows that undetectable viral loads make HIV untransmittable to others. Fact number three: HIV is preventable. There are several ways to protect yourself from HIV, such as using condoms. If you are currently HIV negative, taking pre-exposure prophylaxis prevents you from being diagnosed. Also, regularly test, so you know if you need to start treatment. Fact Number Three: You can take a test at home. Yes, you heard me, you can go to CVS and take a test at home in privacy. I know that going to the doctor can make you nervous or concerned. At home test takes care of that; you can take it right at your kitchen table. Fact Number Four: HIV only transmits through 4 bodily fluids. HIV transmits through breast milk, vaginal secretions, blood, and semen. Coming in contact does not necessarily mean you will be diagnosed with HIV. It does not transmit through sweat, tears, or urine. Fact number 5: HIV is not dormant Some think you can have HIV and test and it’s negative. There are varying generations of tests that can detect HIV within 15 days; most tests can detect HIV within 3- 6 months. HIV is asymptomatic for about ten years, meaning you may not have symptoms. That is why testing is imperative. I strongly advise testing at least 2x a year, especially if you are sexually active or an IV drug user. The CDC recommends that everyone aged 13-64 gets tested. These are five facts to start your journey to being informed about HIV. When I was 18, I never

thought it could happen to me, and it did. Most people living with HIV don’t plan on getting HIV, but at some point, they discovered their diagnosis and made a choice. If you live with HIV or are diagnosed with HIV, you have a choice to make around your next steps. I chose to take care of myself, and it was the best decision of my life. If you are HIV negative, you, too, have a choice to protect yourself and continue to get tested. I chose never to deny an opportunity to take a test, and early testing saved my life. No matter what situation you find yourself in, there is support and help for you, not tainted or forgotten. Someone who doesn’t know you loves you and hopes you can take this information to inform the next person to end the epidemic. SWAGHER WINTER 2020 watching the rehearsals, I fell so deep in love with theater. I always knew that theater would be a part of my life, and I wanted to sing, dance, and act. I had no idea at that time it would be a career choice. I didn’t even know it was an option. Once I learned that it was an option, I jumped at it. Q: What was the transition like going from stage plays to the big screen? AR: It was a huge transition. On stage, your job is to project to the audience, a LIVE audience, so you get that immediate gratification. You know if they like you. You know if you suck. You know all of that at the moment. You don’t have to wait until your show comes out. You don’t have to wait for people to come for you on Twitter.

great, but it is not so great when flipped. So I think that is Veronica. She has great qualities that have made her a very successful woman but do not cross her and do not disagree with her. She has to control it all. She has to control the people around her. That sort of drives her a little crazy and makes her do crazy things. However, I would not say that she is evil. Q: Let’s talk about the fertility issue – What advice would you give to other women struggling to become parents?

“You know if they like you. You know if you suck. You know all of that at the moment. You don’t have to wait until your show comes out.”

In film and on television, you don’t know for a while if the show is a hit or if people like it. You can’t tell for a while until the ratings start to come in. Also, as an actor or actress, you don’t project. It’s not about reaching the balcony with your voice. It is really about being as subtle as you can and having any type of loudness in your eyes instead of your volume. Q: Tell us more about the character Veronica? AR: Veronica... I love Veronica!! She’s definitely interesting. Some people like to call her evil. I don’t think she is evil. I think Veronica is probably the most controlling perfectionist you ever want to meet. She came from an impoverished background, and she pulled herself out of that. She went to law school. She started drug rehab centers; she became a millionaire all on her own. People like that have that flip side. The same reason they can become successful is the same reason they cannot keep love in their lives. We all have that quality that is great when it is

AR: Wow. The first thing I would say to women struggling to become moms is you will become a mother. There is no reason why you won’t. The way that happens for you may be different, and that is something you have to embrace. Once that happens, motherhood is there and waiting for you. So while it is difficult, and it makes you feel so inadequate at times, understand that God has a plan. If you can just hold on a little while, you will see why you had to go through all of it. You will indeed be a mother. It is a very difficult thing for a woman to go through, but there is light on the other side. Don’t give up. Q: How is your character Veronica like you? How is she different? AR: I think she is similar to me because we kind of

and this is how a Black girl would act, and this is

I think we are different because I really am extraordinarily picky about things for myself. I like my house to look a certain kind of way. I like to wear a certain type of clothing; I like my hair to look a certain kind of way. I am very picky. But I am really not picky about what other people do. You can drive what you want, do whatever you want with your house. I don’t spend a whole lot of energy criticizing and picking apart other people, and I think that is the difference. With Veronica, everyone has to line up with how she wants it done or else. As for me, I take you as you are. I have an eclectic group of friends.

“I think women should take on powerful roles, vulnerable roles, and any roles that can show the world all of our wonderful, beautiful colors from our culture.”

Q: If someone were making a movie of your life, who would play you and why? AR: Ooh, that’s a good question! I haven’t thought about that. I often think in terms of people I would want to play. I never think about people wanting to make a movie about me. You know people have said that Gabrielle Union and I favor and I really, really, really love her. We’ve never even met, but I have fallen in love with her activism on social media, and for as long as I have been following her, I have enjoyed it. I enjoy the fact that she has a very seemingly stable and wonderful marriage. She is a mom that went through a hard time becoming a mom as well. So I feel a sort of a kinship with her, so I would say Gabrielle Union. Q: Your character in The Have & Have Nots has been pinned as evil, the Ice Queen, and the worst of the worst, but your character is powerful the way Alexis Carrington Colby was in the 80s TV series, the Dynasty. Do you think it is important for women of color to choose roles like that to step out into power boldly with transformation and reinvention? AR: Absolutely. I think it’s important that, as women of color, we play all types of parts. We are just not the same. We have fallen victim to playing sameness in theater, movies, and television. This is a Black girl,

how the mother would act. We are so different, and we can play anything! I think women should take on powerful roles, vulnerable roles, and any roles that can show the world all of our wonderful, beautiful colors from our culture. I think that is very important. Men get to play ruthless, evil, and powerful all the QApretty, soft, and likable. I’m thankful to Tyler Perry for having the opportunity to play those powerful roles that usually men play is great as well. Q: One day, you are engulfed with playing Veronica on set, rising to the challenges, and not even sleeping at night because you are locked into that character. Then the next day, you are a mom and a loving wife. How do you find balance and control in your life? AR: The same way anyone does. I go to work, and I

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 play a character. That is my job to bring that character to life. Some go to teach a class, and other women go to the hospital; they are nurses. It’s the same way, no different. At my job, I have to put on the character of Veronica. But I do understand that it is a job. I trained. I went to school to be an actor. Not so that I could play myself, take myself to work, bring myself home as Veronica. Just so that I could go to work and do this very fulfilling work and then come home to my family. It is no different except that I actually get seen on TV doing my job. Many women have to balance their job, their work, and family life. It is always a challenge. But we do it. We are strong like that. Q: What is next for you? Do you have anything in the works right now? AR: I have so much, but I will not tell you until I can sign somebody’s contract. Q: If you could play any other character on the show, who would it be and why? AR: Hannah. I think that would be the opposite of Veronica, so it would be great to do something completely opposite. Hannah is also very strong and powerful but in a different way. Hannah is probably closer to Angela, to me. I usually don’t enjoy playing characters that are close to me, but I think that I would enjoy playing Hannah. But my first pick – I love playing Veronica. Q: In recent interviews, you were talking about the not so great parts of the pandemic where even the theater had got shut down, and your friends were losing jobs. What should people do in the pandemic, and you said that they should find creativity. What did you do in your creative space during the pandemic? AR: I did several things. The first thing I did was to create a space in my home where we could breathe. Where my son could have an area he felt good about where he could play and read. I created a studio space where I could work, and my mom had a space.

Those are the first things that I did since we were going to be here for a while since our home was going to be an office and playground, backyard… created a space for her friends to come and share their stories. When we hear that, I am not the only one that went through that. Someone else has experienced that. So, I created a Youtube channel called Artist Talk. Artists come on and share about 45 minutes telling their message and how they got to where they are. When George Floyd happened, there was a whole other revolution that started. I created another platform. I created Black Woke Business Highlight. I give10 minute spotlights to small business owners who are Black or woke. They must understand where we are as a community, a culture, and be compassionate towards that. I feature a new business each week, so we are conscious of where and how we spend our money. It’s been an extraordinarily busy time. In creating all these different platforms, I have learned to video edit and learn something new every day. It has been all about creativity. Creativity is using your imagination to get back to your original ideas and to use those ideas to solve problems. Many people think that creativity is all about dancing and singing, but it really is not. It is coming up with imaginative ways to solve problems. If we all went back to our original ideas and dug deep into our creativity, we could really create our way out of the mess we’re in. But everyone is just trying to go back to the life they had before. Because we are trying to go back, no one is creating a way forward. But if we all embrace the idea of creating, then I think we can all move forward, and the vision forward will be much brighter and much better than even what we left. LATOSHA DONABY BY ALLISONJANEL

L

aTosha Donaby is recognized in and out of the medical field for her gentle and caring spirit and her love for helping others. Whether it’s speaking a word of encouragement or simply offering a polite gesture, she believes in treating others how she wishes to be treated. Her motto is to always keep a positive outlook and wean out negativity. She has a clinical background and is equipped with expertise in helping individuals become self-sufficient. LaTosha supports the well-being of all people by continually securing provisions

to foster better mental and physical health. Throughout her professional life, LaTosha maintains certifications in Nursing, CPR, and Phlebotomy while working towards an Associates Degree in Occupational Therapy. Her goal is to ensure that her patients leave her services with a more positive outlook on life. Rarely do her patients leave an appointment without a smile on their faces, nor do they fail to compliment her on the services she provides to them.

GRATITUDE & GRACE 57

LaTosha grew up in the city of St Louis, Missouri, being one of seven siblings. Although she grew up in what would have been considered the city’s heart, she was not the typical city girl. She didn’t hang out much, and because she had five older brothers, she was a bit sheltered from many things in life. This resulted in her being very shy, growing up. At a very young age, she felt that she was different than other children. “I was always treated different, but in a good way. I was often called by the name ‘Hollywood,” she states.

of the face of who was featured. To describe Donaby as ambitious is an understatement. She began modeling at the age of 15. She attended John Robert Powers Modeling and Acting Agency in St. Louis, Missouri. She had Improvisation Training with Ben Carson, On-Camera Acting with Robert Vito, the John Robert Powers’ workshop Acting and Modeling for the Camera, and additional voice-over and improvisation training. The Lou’ native competed in the Ms. Junior Teen USA Pageant. Her modeling resume also includes commercial and print, working as the Midwest Institute’s promotional model and a model for a DiGiorno Pizza ad. She participated in the theatrical stage play, The Skin of my Teeth at the Clayton Community Theater, the Lupus Fashion Show,

“I was always treated different, but in a good way. I was often called by the name ‘Hollywood,”

Though LaTosha doesn’t recall much about her childhood, she does remember her passion and love for modeling and acting. She can readily recall reading through magazines or watching television and finding it hard to focus without imagining her face in the picture frame instead

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 and in I Am Exquisite Red Carpet in St. Louis. She appeared in the movie Mom and Dad, starring Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair. She acted in the stageplay A New Husband For Christmas, written by playwright Kyria Williams. The young actress feels there is a direct correlation between many of her hardships and triumphs in life to never meeting her biological father. The search for her father finally came to an end in 2018 after discovering his obituary via the internet. After searching for him for the majority of her life, it was unfortunate that the two never met. He had been deceased for two years prior to her internet discovery. “This, I would have to say, was my defining moment. It pushed me to fight even harder for my dreams and for what I believe in.”

vorite television shows, telling myself that’s going to be me one day. AllisonJanel: What happened in your life that made you want to explore working in the medical field? LaTosha: I’ve always had a passion for helping others. It’s a blessing to me to be able to help others that are in need. AllisonJanel: If you could describe yourself in one sentence, what would it be? LaTosha: I am a very positive, outgoing, God-fearing, strong-minded woman of faith who believes anything is possible with God.

“I would have to say that I am a people’s person. I’ve always been told that I have a way with people.”

She was raised in the church, attending on the weekends sometimes with her late godmother, Doris Logan. She testifies, “I’ve always been a believer and a person with strong faith. My belief in God has brought me through situations that only He could have worked. I fought hard to become the woman I am today, and with God’s grace, I’m still standing-- stronger than I’ve ever stood before!” AllisonJanel: How would you describe your SwagHer? What makes LaTosha, LaTosha? LaTosha: My personality, I would have to say that I am a people’s person. I’ve always been told that I have a way with people. I guess it’s the God in me, which allows my personality to shine, which has always drawn people and opportunities to me. AllisonJanel: What sparked your interest in acting? LaTosha: Acting has always been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. I remember watching my fa-

AllisonJanel: What concepts have you been working on to make your brand bigger and better? LaTosha: I would have to say a prayer. I’ve worked on getting my prayer life and my relationship with God stronger over these past few years so that way, I’m able to hear Him more clearly. I’m allowing Him to direct my path.

AllisonJanel: Who do you look up to? LaTosha: I look up to God because He is where all my help comes from. Alongside Him, I would have to say, my mom. She’s a strong woman. AllisonJanel: How do you balance your time between family and acting? LaTosha: My family comes first, then my career. I spend a lot of my time talking to God before I do anything, which is how I usually get my day started. I find that by consulting with Him first, I’m able to find the balance I need to juggle in between everything. AllisonJanel: How is your relationship with your mother?

GRATITUDE & GRACE 59 LaTosha: I’m very close to my mom. Part of the reason I do what I do is because of her. I want to continue to make her proud. She’s a very strong woman. AllisonJanel: What’s the secret to your success? LaTosha: Prayer and keeping God first. AllisonJanel: Can you tell our readers something about you that you haven’t covered already? LaTosha: I’m usually very shy, an introvert. So this is taking me outside of my comfort zone. You have to be willing to do something that you have never done to reach your full potential to reach your destiny. Afraid and all, this is me letting the world know that you haven’t seen the last of me. This is just the beginning. AllisonJanel: What can our readers expect from you in the near future? LaTosha: Lead speaking roles in movies, more print modeling. I’ll be working towards finishing my book. I want to be able to give back to non-profit organizations geared towards helping the less fortunate.

AllisonJanel: What advice would you give to a young woman wanting to pursue her dreams of acting? LaTosha: I would tell them to follow their hurt and to pursue their dreams. Never allow anyone to stand in the way and believe in yourself even when no one else does. Don’t allow society to make you be someone that you are not. Be yourself. Last but not least, to pray for clarity and confirma-

“I see myself with a strategy for prosperous and successful living.” tion from God. AllisonJanel: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? LaTosha: I see myself with a strategy for prosperous and successful living. I see this moment as my defining moment marking the beginning of supernatural breakthroughs and miracles. I’m living as a debt-free print model gracing the cover of magazines, taking on leadership roles with “author” on my list of accomplishments. AllisonJanel: How did you cope with grieving and healing from the death of a father that you didn’t have the opportunity to meet? LaTosha: I looked to God for strength and healing. He put it in my spirit to start writing, which has helped me get through it—so allowing myself to write about it. In return has aided in my healing process. AllisonJanel: How did the opportunity of staring in A New Husband For Christmas come about?

60

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 LaTosha: I met the writer Kyria a few years back. I was promoting my business at the time, and she mentioned she was a writer, then mentioned that I should audition for a role which was for a stage play she had written. I told her I would but never got around to doing it. A few years passed, then a friend of mine tagged me in a post on social media for the movie, A New Husband For Christmas, which was also written by Kyria. Wow was all I could say. Look at God. He allowed me to cross paths with the same person from the stage play years ago. I’d once again missed the actual auditions, so I agreed to work as an extra. What started as me working as an extra quickly turned into being offered a role. I remember shortly after walking into the building. I was told as I entered that I was wanted in front of the camera. It all happened so fast. It was a blessing to have been a part of it. AllisonJanel: Where do you see yourself taking your acting career? LaTosha: I see myself doing Christian based movies working alongside some of the best in the industry. AllisonJanel: What has been your greatest accomplishment in your life LaTosha: I would have to say becoming a mother and role model to my kids and everyone who’s ever

AllisonJanel: Do you have any upcoming events or projects that you care to share? veryone loves to make money. The holidays are always an exciting time of the year, where small business owners can double up their sales or create a quick startup for the holidays only. Whatever it is that sparks your passion, you might want to consider that as a niche and figure out what you can do with it in the longrun. Tis the season to plan, research, and get the client ready because everyone is looking for great bargains and sales throughout the holidays. Before the pandemic, when Black Friday consisted of packing malls, outlets, and retail stores, every store had a great deal for shoppers to buy Christmas gifts for friends, family, or even themselves! Now that

Covid-19 has wiped away thousands of businesses forcing them to shut down during crucial times, things during the holidays won’t be the same. However, whatever you are good at in a crafty way, you should use those skills to make some extra cash. If you have a small business, whether you are a

These are just some great ideas for your business during the holidays. Below are some tips you can use for the holidays to earn yourself extra income. Start a social media marketing campaign for one of your products or service. Some business owners and entrepreneurs start running sales or ads on social media one month in advance or even two months in advance. Choose a budget and start your campaign, making sure you have the correct target audience. Cornelius J. Maxwell By Christina Woodard

C

ornelius J. Maxwell is an Iraq war veteran, advocate, 2021 Academy Award finalist, public speaker, and author. Maxwell served in the United States Army from 2004-2012 as a Communications Sergeant. After serving in the Army, Cornelius would earn his Associates in Occupational Studies from UTI in Automotive Technology. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Houston Downtown. Cornelius is now attending an MBA fellowship in entrepreneurship at UCLA. Cornelius gave his famous “Transition Units Theory Speech” during the Lorna René Honor Our Heroes Art Exhibition and Award Ceremony II. Mr. Maxwell later presented his vision of the Transition Units Theory in front of the Arizona House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. He plans to save two million veterans’ lives over ten years from PTSD, suicide, homelessness, unemployment and help veterans get their benefits quicker. Cornelius started a petition online with Change.org and has been nominated as

a finalist. On June 19, 2020, Maxwell published a poetry book titled Unapologetically: I Am A Man. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the last protest, Cornelius wrote the poem “Unapologetically: I Am A Man,” which led to him writing the rest of the book. Within the first two weeks of release, the book is ranked on Amazon’s Top 100 in 5 categories. Cornelius is currently educating the public about his 5-phase plan to uplift the black community in America on a level never seen before. Christina: What is your Swagger? What makes Cornelius, Cornelius? Cornelius: I’m a son of the Most High and know I can do all things by exercising my faith. I’m at a point in my life where I’m starting to embrace and understand the anointing of my destiny. Christina: What was it like when you served in the Army? Have you always wanted to be a soldier, or was it something you stumbled into? Cornelius: My father served in the Army. I knew it was something I had to do, even though many of

my friends and family tried to talk me out of it. It has turned out to place a huge part of my legacy. During my tenure in the Army, I served three combat tours in Iraq. I learned so much about myself, politics, people, birthrights, and my anointed destiny. Christina: Tell our readers about your poetry book, “Unapologetically: I Am A Man.” What inspired you to write this book? Cornelius: I was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last protest, “I Am A Man.” So, I started researching why it is so important to isolate the black man from the family structure. My 5-phase plan consists of the following: Political Influence Economic Stability Education & Healthcare Home & Land Ownership Birthrights Christina: Did you expect your poetry book to be such a success after it was released? How did you feel once you saw how it had ranked on Amazon’s Top 100 list in four different categories? Cornelius: Personally, everything came together on divine timing. This is my first book, and I had no idea how to put a book together. God put all the right places at the right time. The book has been nominated for Book of the Year by Online Book Club. I see it all as a blessing and most humbling experience because I prayed that this book would inspire lives. I’m honored that the mission of Unapologetically: I Am A Man is doing just that. Inspiring people! Christina: What is a day in your life like? Cornelius: I’m extremely productive. I do public speaking about the difference between being busy vs. being productive. Every day I’m a student and learning more about my life, purpose, legacy, destiny, and how they are all aligned to please God.

Christina: Tell us about this quote that you often say: “Leaders seek opportunities to serve others and lack the expectation for others to serve them.” What does this mean to you? Cornelius: I look at leaders as servants. The greatest leaders are all servants and have mastered the art of servitude. Leaders seek to serve and not seek power. There is a major difference between the two. Once we learn the value of service, we learn what a leader brings to the table. Christina: Please tell us about your Transition Units Theory. Where can people go to support? Cornelius: The Transition Units Theory is currently being nominated for a 2021 Academy Award for Leadership by the Academy of the United States Veterans. I gave the introduction speech at the Honor Our Heroes Art Exhibition and Award Ceremony. A battle buddy of mine recorded the speech and put it on Facebook. Thus, leading me to present the Transition Units Theory in front of Congress, I have a petition on change.org and wrote a bill for it. Please go to their website and vote for the Transition Units Theory. You can vote until March 1, 2021. Christina: If you could pick one thing you had to advocate for and focus on for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Cornelius: I view advocacy as a service, and where there is a need, there needs to be a champion. The one thing I can advocate for is seeking a need to improve and inspire others’ lives that may impact generations to come. 3 GIFTS TO SPOIL AND ENRICH YOU BY FRANCHESKA “FANCY” FELDER

I

f you’re anything like me, the holidays can be rather stressful and usually, we are more concerned with buying gifts for everyone and not ourselves. So this holiday season, amid a pandemic and the new normal still fresh on the horizon, I think it’s time to treat ourselves. So this list of Christmas gifts is for you and you only. Each item on this list is something that I possess that makes me feel happy and think you would enjoy it. The Hustle Journal The Hustle Journal is the first Hip-Hop inspired daily productivity journal. It takes the most inspirational and motivational rap lyrics and combines it with proven productivity techniques while being mindful of mental health. Three young black men created the Journal: Ryan Rosenthal, Corey Scott, and Ben Hemingway, all hip hop lovers and journal themselves. The idea came to Ryan while driving, listening to Jay-Z’s Reasonable

Doubt. Every culture has its leaders that provide wisdom and proverbial advice. While listening to a line from Jay-Z, “I rather die enormous than live dormant,” Ryan thought to himself, wow, that line embodies the American Dream for my culture or anyone raised by Hip-Hop. He realized many rappers function as modern-day philosophers telling the stories of struggle and the “Come-Up,” giving fans of hip-hop culture gems and success formula. My new favorite thing! I used to journal a lot, but over the years, I’ve stopped. So now, with my Hustle Journal, I am getting back to something I love. As a lover of Hip Hop and

GRATITUDE & GRACE 67 quotes, this journal is my jam! I appreciate the writing prompts and the Do’s and Don’t’s section, which assists with traits and habits we’d like to improve and/ or change. I’m eager to see how this goes, but I can already say the journal is helping with my writing creativity. http://Hustlejournal.co | @hustlejournal_ Photo Credit: @hustlejournal_ IG Toni Jone’s Affirmations for the Grown Ass Woman Affirmations for the Grown Ass Woman is a spoken word nine-track EP by Toni Jones, a Black wellness leader and mental health advocate. Toni is also the founder of WIFE Comma (Women In Full Empowerment and More). I listen to this album almost daily and definitely before speaking or attending anything because it is so comforting and reassuring. The affirmations aren’t your regular-schmegular “I am’s” but rather some powerful words being spoken over one’s life, the beats are dope, and my favorite track is “Worth Ethic.” “I am in business on purpose. Not a business that makes me a busy mess. I’m a businesswoman, ya heard me”. Toni and her team definitely knew what they were doing when making this album. Affirmations for the Grown Ass Woman can be found on all major listening platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. | @iamtonijones Photo Credit: Joe Powers Insitu Photography The Candy Lady Assorted Candy The Candy Lady Cosmetics is bigger than a company filled with fun names, colorful palettes, and candy-themed merchandise. The brand is deep-rooted in my childhood experience growing up in New Orleans. The Candy Lady was one of the first entrepreneurs we saw in our neighborhoods. From frozen

cups, chips, and of course, candy, she was an everyday working person who serviced the community with products that kept us coming back for more. So too, our brand is for the everyday person. From homes to offices worldwide, our goal is to provide striking looks and bold colors that complement every face it touches. We hope that you love and enjoy it so much that you will consistently come back and shop with us. Consider The Candy Lady your “Glam on the Go.” As a woman who is learning how to apply makeup and a lipgloss girl, I feel extra grown when I put on my Suga B lipstick. Inspired by the Sugar Babies candy, the color is a neutral type of light brown that I can wear every day should I like. If you watch Theories & Thoughts, my co-hostess Arnya is always wearing their Assorted Candy Eye Candy. So the one gift I am actually purchasing to treat myself is actually the same one because I love all the colors. https://thecandyladycosmetics.com | @thecandyladycosmetics Photo Credit:@thecandyladycosmetics IG

PARENTING

Raising Black, FreeThinking Entrepreneurial Children By Francheska “Fancy” Felder

M

aisha Rush is a mother of 11, with children ranging from ages of two-months to 19-years-old, a wife to Thomas, and the Chief Operations Officer of Rush Consulting Firm. The Rush’s homeschool all of the schoolaged children and include them in their consulting firm, Rush Consulting Firm, which focuses on your business fluctuations to bring consistency to your cash flow, as well. Fancy: How do you balance work and family? Maisha: When you have a family, especially a family our size, I always tell people that you must have schedules but more importantly than having schedules; you must have discipline. You have to make sure you’re going to follow those schedules. We have a plan for pretty much everything in our household, from chores to work to playtime, fun time, date night, what we’re having for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It gets very intricate, but it’s very necessary, especially for a family of our size. Fancy: What tips do you have for homeschooling during a pandemic? Maisha: I think the most important thing for families during this time in the pandemic is: relax and include. So what I mean by “relax” is you have to kind of relax your standards relax your expectations

because this is new to everybody, not just the adults but also the children. And it’s a very stressful time. It’s stressful for the parents to maneuver their schedules to make sure that they’re homeschooling properly. This is mostly for those who weren’t previously homeschooling like we were. We’ve been homeschooling since 2015. So you really got to relax your standards and your expectations. You can’t expect so much from them because they’re just as stressed out as the parents are. And include. By “include,” I mean you have to include them in every part or most of the parts of your day. For my family and me, we welcome our children in every aspect of our day regardless of whether it’s how we’re grooming or why we’re grooming, you know, the way we do our hair or my makeup or why we’re wearing what we’re wearing. You have to be ready to answer every question because this is something new for the children. They usually are in school while you are taking a shower, doing hair and makeup, getting dressed, cleaning the house, or doing work. Now they are in homeschool. It’s something new for the new homeschooling parents, so you have to be prepared to include them in every aspect of your day and be ready to answer all those questions that they’re going to have. Things that are ordinary things to you on a daily, it’s not

GRATITUDE & GRACE 69

regular to them. So you want to allow them to have the freedom to ask you questions and have to stay in the mindset of answering those questions. Fancy: How does one raise free-thinking children with an entrepreneurial mindset? Maisha: In addition to what I aforementioned in the last question, you must have an open and honest relationship. In our family, we like to “Ask the Children.” Once a week, we sit down, and we have a meeting. What can I do better as a mother? Or Thomas will ask what he can do better as a father. We sit down and discuss the things that we like or dislike, the children’s tendencies, and how we’re going to grow. This helps build entrepreneurial mindsets because it allows them to know who they are and be comfortable with who they are. We try not to change who they are because we can’t always expect them to be who we want them to be. We have to expect them to grow into the person that they want to be. For example, we have a daughter who is very, very outspoken who

Kimberley B Jones Rhetaskew Publishing Company www.kimberleybjones.com info@historyforpreschool.com 1.843.576.9361

has no problem telling you that you have an extra love handle or that you don’t smell so nice today. And so instead of you know, telling her, “Oh, that’s not nice,” “Don’t say that to your sister or brother,” we try to let her know maybe there’s a nicer way to say it, and then we have the other child or person that she’s talking to learn how to accept what she’s saying. Your mindset starts with being comfortable in the skin that you’re in. And so that’s a significant thing in our house. We make sure that they are happy with the person they are to growing into, the person they will be. And as far as hoping that they’ll be entrepreneurs. We just let them know the ins and outs of the day. For me, all of the children help me in some aspect of Rush Consulting Firm. We have one child who handles social media, one child that helps with the marketing, and one who answers the business phone calls, takes pictures, and does graphics. There’s so much in the business that the children can help with. You want to include them to see the fun parts of being an entrepreneur and the hard parts of being an entrepreneur. Fancy: What tips would you give for incorporating family into your business? Maisha: So this question kind of ties in with the last question for me. So I guess I kind of went over that, but I just want to make sure that they always feel a part of things. The biggest thing for us is our family feels like family no matter what we’re doing or where we’re going. We try and answer all questions, you know, as honestly and openly as we possibly can. It’s very important for us that they’re comfortable with who they are, and they’re comfortable in knowing what they do and do not want to do so when I’m incorporating the family into my business. Ialways make sure they’re doing something that they like to do. It doesn’t seem like a chore. It’s not a chore, and they do get paid at the end of the week. Some are not on payroll because they’re little, and they work here and there, but I do make sure that I pay them for their time, which is essential.

WONDER WOMAN

TALENA SKYE BY CHRISTINA WOODARD

I

ndie gospel rap artist, Cherese “Talena Skye” Bracey is God’s daughter and a princess of the King, she unapologetically declares. Born in Manhattan and raised in Jersey City, the Chill Town native is on a mission to free the captives. Some refer to Talena Skye as a lyrical preacher as she raps the gospel while delivering her messages in a bold, authoritative way. Talena Skye (pronounced Ta-lay-na) chose this as her artist name as a rebirth of a new beginning from a life filled with many dark days. She adds “Skye” to

her name as a reminder to always keep her head towards the sky, looking to God for help through trials and tribulations. The gospel rapper is no stranger to struggle, hard work, and perseverance. She ministers hope for the hurting and the importance of staying in faith and trusting God. Talena is not ashamed to be radical for Christ as she boldly states in her newest release, “Something 2 Say,” which was inspired by world events that sparked the strong lyrics igniting the fire toward the

kingdom of darkness. Soon to be released, her new EP is called “Arise,” inspired by Isaiah 60. She overcame many struggles as a child. Talena is a survivor of a brain tumor that almost left her blind. She was a victim of a hit and run accident in which the car was totaled from the passenger side from where she sat. She survived without a scratch from the crash. Talena Skye is also a survivor of domestic violence. Today she advocates for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. As a child, she would escape the cold atmosphere around her by writing songs at the age of 8 years old and reading her favorite books. Storybooks were a way of escape from the real world for her. It allowed her to imagine a fun world away from her own. “Alcoholism is a disease that many don’t believe can harm the self-esteem and life of a child. It can be a vehicle used by hell to drive through the doorway of a person’s spirit that can cause destruction,” says Talena Skye. She suffered much physical abuse at her father’s hands due to his uncontrollable habit that nearly tore her family apart. Her dad’s addiction and abusive reign came to a halt as he suffered a stroke that nearly left him completely disabled. Her mom, who was her dad’s caregiver, passed away from cancer, and now Talena Skye resume’s the role of caretaker for her dad. “Being responsible for my dad’s well-being has been a chal-

lenge emotionally for me, especially since losing my mom has been added to my plate. However, God is a healer in every way! I am walking the path of forgiveness and have a better relationship with my dad since God has healed me of the hurt I endured. Jesus will mend your broken heart if you let him!” says Talena. Today she is the founder of The Reesie Reader & Bookie Literacy Club for kids and created the character mascots, Reesie Reader (the girl who loves to read) and Bookie (the king of Book world). The literacy club gave close to 10,000 storybook donations to kids who needed them the most, helping them make friends with books. In 2009, she started her business Reading Reaps Rewards Early Childhood Enrichment program. The program teaches children how to read while building learning activities around books for enrichment. She is the author of three children’s books and was given the opportunity to meet Tory Burch at an entrepreneur women’s mentoring event. Tory purchased copies of her first book, Storytime Friends, to give to children during a Christmas event. She is currently seeking to make her books into animation films. Her third book Reesie Reader Little Entrepreneur, teaches kids gems of becoming an entrepreneur. She wrote and produced a kid’s song featured in the book called “Story Time Friends” that was sung by her cousins, “The Story Time Friends Crew.” The song promotes loving to read and making friends with

books while teaching children that reading helps you become a leader. The crew, Christina, Shawn, and Daniel Robinson, who were 7, 8, and 12 at the time, are young adults today and doing well. The crew sang for children and distributed books at an annual Book-nic event. Talena Skye is also a voice-over talent, making people laugh with many character style voices from men and women voices in the style of Egyptian, Italian, Spanish, African, and Indian to many kid styles. Meet the artist and author below. Christina: What is your SwagHer? What makes Talena, Talena? Talena: I am a gospel rapper who loves to make a difference in the lives of hurting people. Helping others succeed is my mission; winning souls for Christ brings joy to my life when the kingdom of darkness loses a soul. Christina: Tell us about your upcoming EP, “Arise.” What inspired it, and how was the process from start to finish? Talena: I’ve been through so many struggles, and my gratitude to God is allowing Him to use me for His purpose. I am a woman who isn’t afraid to speak up for things that need to be said on behalf of God. Jesus loves everyone, but everyone doesn’t love Jesus. He shed His blood for all of humanity, and by exiting Him from the world wastes the very blood that was shed for our eternal life. “Arise” in scripture says

arise and come forth. Regardless of the ashes of my life’s struggles, I chose not to run from God but to Him. Isaiah 60 inspired me to allow God to use me as a voice in the kingdom among many others and to speak up when He inspires me to do so. I have had some issues and setbacks, but I am pressing forward with God’s help. I will arise and let my light shine regardless of what people say about me or what the enemy sends my way! I pray my transparency and testimony will inspire others and save lives. Christina: You are the founder of The Reesie Reader & Bookie Literacy Club. What did you decide to open this up for kids? Talena: I wanted to create a program to give books to kids and provide exciting storytime events for children, especially those who needed them the most. My mission is to help children make friends with books. Reesie Reader and Bookie are reading role model mascots I created to bridge the education and entertainment gap. Christina: Have you always loved to read and write, being that you are a published children’s author? Talena: Yes! Since I was a child, storytime has been a comforting tool. Whenever I was sad, I would read my favorite stories, Cinderella being my most favorite, and imagine myself in the book on adventures. Storytime was my world away from home. I loved writing stories and poems. I wrote three children’s books by Cherese Bracey available online featuring my reading characters. My third book, Reesie Reader Little Entrepreneur, features a song I wrote to promote reading called “Storytime Friends,” which is also available online. Christina: Since gospel-rap is such a specific genre of music. What made you decide to rap for gospel instead of hip-hop? Talena: God should be involved in all we do. I love different styles of music, including the clean versions of Hip Hop and rap. My inspiration is to bridge the gap between the two to glorify God with my music. I want to share God-inspired messages to reach people by using a popular music vehicle in the world today. Christina: How do you find the time to write and record music, write books, and run a literacy club? What is a day in your life like?

74

SWAGHER WINTER 2020 Talena: I set aside time in my day to attend to what’s important that I work on and try not to allow distractions from my goals. My spare time is spent building and perfecting my business as well as my music ministry. Christina: Do you have any upcoming projects or events you would like our readers to know about? Talena: My video “Mama” featuring Be Cleare Allen will soon be released. It was written as a tribute to my mom, who died from cancer. The song features Be Cleare Allen, who also lost her mom to cancer. I hope to encourage those who suffered a loss to be inspired, have faith, and never give up on God. My EP and video for my song “Something 2 Say” will be released by the new year. Christina: Is there anything else you would like to share? Talena: I want the world to know being a Christian

is not about religion but having a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Some Christians make it hard for people to accept Christianity because of too much judgment from the church. We are commanded to love one another regardless of their ways because love is a Christian trademark. If we don’t have love, then how can we say we are Christians when Christ is love, case and point. RELATIONSHIPS

Unlock Your Power This Cuffing Season BY ARNITRIS STRONG

W

elcome to cuffing season- the period between sundress season and spring where people who have avoided relationships all year suddenly feel the urge to get cuffed or settle into a situationship. This season is ushered in by the cooler weather of fall when many spend more time inside. Many women dread this time because they aren’t prepared to weed out the sincere men from the ones just looking for a little body heat. COVID-19 has presented 2020 with its own set of challenges, and many of us are in desperate need of companionship. You don’t have to be at the mercy of men who are looking for something to pass the

time this year. Unlock your power this cuffing season with the following keys. “How can my next boyfriend be my next boyfriend? “nEXt” - Sevyn Streeter Maybe he is hearting all of your pictures on IG all of a sudden in an attempt to get your attention. One thing we can all count on cuffing season to do is to bring worrisome ex-boyfriends out of the woodwork. There is nothing like being relegated inside by cooler weather to make exes begin to scroll the Rolodexes of past relationships looking for some-

one who still has lingering feelings. Don’t fall for that “Hey, big head” or “Good morning, beautiful” text, though. While a stroll down memory lane may be fun for a while, inevitably, past relationships’ problems will rear their ugly heads. It is important to remember that exes are exes for a reason; barring changed behavior, there is no reason to revisit the past- not even the loneliness of cuffing season. Baby, how you doing? Hope that cha fine wanna know what you got in mind... -“Lovers & Friends” Lil Jon Men aren’t the only ones who look for casual relationships. If you aren’t ready to be in a serious, committed relationship, it is wise to be upfront and honest about that with yourself and any man you meet. When we aren’t clear about what we truly desire, lines become blurred, and we can end up with everything that we DON’T desire. So, if a relationship isn’t what you have in mind, be honest about that. If what you truly need is the commitment of a serious relationship, make sure everyone you meet understands that. Just maybe, you will find both a lover and a friend in one amazing package. The closer I get to you, the more you make me see... -“The Closer I Get to You” - Roberta Flack Many states are going into lockdown again as we are beginning to see the cases of COVID-19 rise again. These parameters can make getting to know someone new challenging. But, with a little creativity, you can create a fraction of the intimacy and connection you’d experience in person. Plan a virtual dinner date where the two of you order in and chat via FaceTime

or set a time to cook your favorite dishes together while you chat. Go old school and create a playlist of songs that remind you of them on Spotify or Apple Music and share it. Have a virtual karaoke night with the help of an app like Smule. (You can learn a lot about someone by paying attention to their song choices). Take time to really check in with them throughout the day to let them know you are thinking of them. Time or distance doesn’t have to be a factor when we have so much technology to bring us closer together. When I move you move, just like that... “Stand Up” - Ludacris The most crucial key to navigating cuffing season is to understand the rule of mirrors. You don’t want to ever put more or less effort into initiating contact than the person you are seeing. No matter what he tells you, his actions will always reveal his true heart for you. If he calls, you answer or return the call. If he texts, you respond. If he requests a date, you make yourself available. These rules only apply if and only if you are interested in getting to know him. The opposite is also applicable. If he is not making an effort to spend time with you or communicate, you mirror his actions by not initiating contact. Like it or not, cuffing season is here. Fear not, lady. We are no longer sitting back and allowing men to dictate the rules of engagement. You now have the keys to make this season exactly what you desire it to be. Which key will you use first?
