Letter From the Editor FRANCHESKA “FANCY” FELDER
Healing is not something you do but rather something you are. The definition of the word heal is “the process of making or becoming sound or healthy again,” and it can be used as a noun or an adjective (like in marketing). Before we could move forward with another issue as a team, I had to heal from one of the worse experiences I have had as an entrepreneur because I was too broken to lead. I still do not know how to describe it, but we were working with a client and their publicist on a project, and it was horrible. I had not been treated that way since the first job I had. My anxiety went through the roof. I talked to my therapist and business coach about it, and they advised me to either drop the client or take control of the situation. However, I was not in the position to drop

That healing process took years. It was
seven years before I could forgive my daughter’s dad, and it ended with me finally deciding that I no longer wanted to carry that hurt with me anymore. I sat my bag down. But I still had to continue living without my daughter with me, which still hurt. It still made me question myself as a woman and think I had failed as a mom. On October 7, 2022, after some negotiations, I was awarded my daughter again, and there is no bell to ring when that happens, but if so, I would have rung the hell out of it. It was another bag to sit down, but it was also like the last piece of my puzzle had been solved or added. I now feel complete. I’ve achieved some things over the years, but none of them compare to this accomplishment because it was really something that I thought would be impossible. I feel like a woman again. But I know there is still more healing that will take place. That’s the thing about healing. It’s an ongoing process. You may heal from one thing and then discover something else you need to heal from. So in this issue, we discuss healing from many angles. We also touch on domestic violence and breast cancer awareness. Plus, this month is also Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so we gifted our back cover to the SAILS organization to help raise awareness.

Mechelle McCain: Healed and Creating Her Own Path of Inspiration As a rising actress and influencer, Mechelle McCain began acting alongside A-listers long before her public divorce. Those A-listers included Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and multiple Grammy winner Beyoncé in the film “The Fighting Temptations,” as well as Kevin Hart in “35 & Ticking;” along with guest appearances on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Game,” “Love That Girl” and “Survivors Remorse. The Houston-native started writing, producing, and starring in her own short films, including “The Hoodling,” “Basketball Wives The Movie,” “Misadventures of a Hollywood Housewife,” and #Instacouple. As a philanthropist, McCain founded her nonprofit organization—Kids Love and Health Foundation—dedicated to teaching health and wellness to the youth. She strives to give underprivileged youth opportunities to succeed and live a healthier lifestyle through a variety of programs within her organization. Healing is not pretty; you have to fight to get past what was built to keep you down. Being an actress and producer and being involved in a high-profile divorce takes much healing and self-assurance to continue to grow and glow. In this interview, you will learn what she did to heal and what inspired her to create her own paths in her career and philanthropy. Arnya: Mechelle, in your own words, please tell our audience who you are. Mechelle: I am a mother, actress, producer, and philanthropist who lives in the Los Angeles, CA, area. I enjoy cooking, traveling, working out, and living a healthy lifestyle. I love to have fun and laugh. Arnya: I can appreciate a woman that loves to

Being a black female actress in Hollywood and coming off a high-profile divorce, please describe what your healing journey looks like. Mechelle: I took time for myself. I stepped away from society and focused on myself to see what I needed to heal and become a better me. Arnya: In regards to healing, what is one thing you would tell a person to do when they start their journey? Mechelle: First, you must identify the hurt/problem. We also teach kids how to live a healthy lifestyle overall so they can then go teach their family members in their household. Arnya: You are also an influencer. Did you ever think you would be in such a position, and to what do you attribute your social media growth? Mechelle: I did not think I would be considered an influencer. You never know if people going to connect with you. I attribute my growth to being authentic and consistent. Arnya: Are there any projects that we should be on the lookout for?
Mechelle: Yes, I do. Arnya: Switching gears, when did you decide you wanted to not only act but also be a producer?
Mechelle: I am writing a self-help book to help women going through a divorce. I also have a short film, “Footprints,” which I starred in and produced about human trafficking. I am currently shopping it as a tv series.
Mechelle: I was tired of waiting to be hired as an actress. I wanted to work. I decided to create my own job. Producing comes naturally to me, as well.
Arnya: What is your SwagHer? What makes Mechelle, Mechelle?
Arnya: I see you are a philanthropist and have an organization, Kids, Love and Health Foundation. Tell our audience how you developed this foundation. What was your reason why, and how do you help youth? Mechelle: At a young age, my daughter was diagnosed with asthma. One day she had a terrible asthma attack, and I had to rush her to the hospital. They kept her for three days and gave her steroids three times a day for the duration of her stay. I had to figure out how to

Men Can Be Victims Too While we have published whole issues on domestic violence in the past, this October we wanted to do things differently and talk about intimate partner abuse among men. I was able to sit down with Alphonso Nathan aka Phonz the Therapist, (the culture’s therapist). Phonz is a black male therapist, author, and Vice President of Brightside Counseling and Psychiatric Private Practices in the Philadelphia Area. As a speaker, he focuses specifically on trauma, healing and self-care methods, and cultural appreciation in the workplace. Recently, he has become a regular guest on Philly's Power 99 radio station. According to the CDC, 1 in 10 men in the United States experience intimate partner abuse. However it is not common for abused men to come forward, so we talked with Phonz to learn what signs to look for. Fancy: How common is male domestic violence or intimate partner abuse? Phonz: Male domestic violence is more common than we think. It just gets reported a lot less due to the stigmatization of men being abused by their female partners. Men, in particular, decide not to report domestic violence to law enforcement for fear that they won't be believed. Fancy: Is it more prevalent in heterosexual relationships than in homosexual relationships? relationships are under an immense amount of Phonz: It is more prevalent in same-sex

He might become depressed or even anxietyridden. A more sociable person may start to pull away from friends and family. 3. Reactions to quick or sudden movements: A man that is being abused can develop PTSD. This looks like someone flinching when another person raises their hand, sensitivity to loud and sudden movements, cowering, or avoidance when it comes to conflict. 4. Drug & alcohol abuse: Abuse can cause alcoholism and drug use. When a person doesn't know how to deal with their emotions, they are more likely to try and mask their feelings and escape their reality. Fancy: What are the chances of men reporting their partners? Phonz: Men don't have the emotional support system like women do. Women confide in their friends during tough times. Unfortunately, a man might feel embarrassed that they are asking for help to get out of a relationship and
Fancy: For our brothers who may be dealing with this situation, what advice would you give for them to free themselves? Phonz: You are not alone. It is ok to ask for help. We must break the stigma that men must always be stronger than women. It's not healthy and puts an unmanageable expectation on the man. You are not less masculine because you are being abused. We should want our men to be emotionally available and intelligent enough to seek resources to heal. There is help out there for you. Talk to a therapist, and don't suffer in silence. Fancy: How should one respond if an abused man who is seeking help confides in them? Phonz: 1. Listen. 2. Don't judge them. 3. Validate their feelings. 4. Let them know you are proud of them for coming forward. 5. Allow them a safe place to talk and share their feelings. 6. Help them find a licensed professional counselor to work through their trauma.

Healing Through Friendship According to Franklin Covey, life is better with friends is one of the seven principles of a Highly Successful College Student, and our cover ladies would have to agree. What started as a work friendship blossomed into a beautiful friendship when Arnya T.M. Davis became a correspondent for SwagHer Magazine and met Francheska "Fancy" Felder. As Arnya moved across magazine positions, the two continued to bond and have daily conversations. These conversations would go on to inspire the Theories & Thoughts Podcast because the two felt that more Black women should be having these types of discussions. Their tagline, "Witness the magic that happens when Black women and sometimes men come together," and share is based on the two women's experiences with learning how to navigate life by learning from each other. But there was a time when the podcast almost ended due to a disagreement between the cohostesses. Fortunately, they resolved it, resulting in a more solid friendship. Dive in below as Arnya and Fancy talk about healing through friendship. Ciara: Who are you outside of your bio? Fancy: I am a socially awkward type of person and a former teen mom. I decided to start with those because oftentimes, people have this impression of me that's not familiar with my persona. My online persona can be a little more outgoing, but I'm an omnivert. Arnya: I'm quirky and fun-loving and the "Rich Auntie." I am in "Rich Auntie" mode most of the time. People will think I am really conservative or just wild, and others may think that I am really churchy, etc. I am a chameleon.

Death is So Final… Healing is a Journey Death 1 The time was 4:15 am, and the phone rang. I knew it was the call that I had been expecting. On the other line was a nurse telling me he had transitioned smoothly to the other side. I was told that he left this side peacefully. For two years, I think I had been holding my breathing, awaiting a call like this. I knew it was coming sooner than later that December morning because we had decided it was time to stop all meds and make him comfortable. I spent the whole weekend thinking about where I would be and what I would be doing when they called. I celebrated life with my friends and even stepped out to cover a fashion show. Heal Your Relationship with Money For the most part, we understand that we will have many relationships in our life. Our parents, siblings, spouse, and friends; however, our relationship with money continues to be one of our biggest struggles. Just like our relationship with family and friends can become rocky and requires healing, so does our relationship with money. The reality is that wealth is deeper than money. It's tapping into and healing from any childhood drama, environmental factors, stress from earning money, or simple mistakes that we've made. Before starting the hands-on process, I ask my clients to discover the root of their money issues. Until financial healing

STILLBORN AND INFANT LOSS SUPPORT (SAILS) BRINGING LOVE, SUPPORT AND UNITY TO GRIEVING FAMILIES. Stillborn And Infant Loss Support (SAILS) knows the heartbreak and emptiness that grieving parents feel, and we want them to know they are not alone. We are here for them during this unimaginable loss, one that no parent should ever have to endure. We understand and grieve alongside them. SAILS' mission is to provide a platform of community, mentorship, education, and advocacy for families impacted by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby before their first birthday. Pregnancy & Infant Loss Facts Stillbirth in the United States is most commonly defined as a fetal death occurring at 20 weeks or more gestation. Black women are more than twice as likely to lose their babies to stillbirth than white women. The CDC estimates that 23,500 babies in the U.S. are born still each year, and nearly 7,000 of those babies are African American.
