CHOOSE WOOL Settlers Stores has now rebranded as Acre & Holt, and is born from a love tweed and sustainable clothing for the great outdoors. The last year encouraged many of us to spend more time outside, working in the garden, walking in fields, being in nature, and the Acre & Holt brand wants to make it the most comfortable experience for everyone. The company is proud to make in Britain – whether in a Scottish mill for tweed, a small workshop in London for its waistcoat production and tailoring is made to order in Frome, Somerset, to minimise waste and carbon footprint. Acre & Holt’s mission is to rid the nation of fleeces that shed 1.7gms of micro-fibres in every wash and get everyone to wear wool and change the world in the way we dress! HETTIE FOR L K BENNETT
The lovely people at LK Bennett approached the team at Hettie last year as they looked to collaborate on its AW21 campaign. Founded in Wimbledon in 1990, LK Bennett is a British brand with a vibrant London heartbeat. They share Hettie’s vision of creating distinctive quality pieces to wear over and over again, harnessing excellent craftsmanship to make beautiful things to treasure. Their design teams consciously create keep-forever pieces that won’t end up in landfill and cause harm to our planet with both brands committed to providing quality over quantity. Together, they’ve come up with classic pet collections using LK Bennett’s outer fabric and the Hettie touch to the final products in the Darcy Pet Collection. SIÂN REEKIE EXPLAINS WHY FAMILY VALUES, HERITAGE AND ETHICAL MORALS ARE IMPORTANT TO HER ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ BRAND, HETTIE
Tell us about yourself and the concept behind the Hettie brand? It’s a family brand, with family values at heart and combines beautiful design, with family conscious values and ethical responsibility, resulting in a wonderful collection of award-winning ‘Made in England’ lifestyle accessories for you and your family. My collections are born from the love and compassion I have for my own family – from grandchildren to fourlegged fur babies. I wanted to create a lifestyle brand that is inspired by the wonderful things I see around me everyday from outdoor and country style living, British manufacturing, high quality products and classic and timeless styles for all seasons. All of our collections will co-ordinate with one another, so we also introduce the idea of twinning together. My inspiration for the collections is to create timeless pieces that will be treasured for a lifetime. I believe, we should all think about the wonderful world in which we live and preserve it for future generations. Where does your inspiration come from for your designs? Our three collections are Woodland, Riverside and Spa and are made up of classic British accessories, inspired by our local British landscape. All of

Lifestyle the materials we use reflect the natural colour tones found within the British countryside. They are themed to evoke my favourite memories and the feeling of bliss drawn from the natural world. Working on the lovely colour palettes infused into each collection, we will be adding in new fabrics, textures and products. Tell us about your product range and how they are made? It was very important to me that our collections are made in the UK, support British manufacturing, as well as our wonderful manufacturing heritage. We’re doing what we can to ensure the products we create, stand the test of time and become a valued possession for our customer, not just another throwaway purchases. We choose to work with British manufacturers to provide superior products to our customers but also to support and protect the countries manufacturing history.
Everything is produced in safe working environments by workers who are looked after properly too! Where do your fabrics come from? We love wool here at Hettie! Biodegradable, sustainable and ecofriendly, it’s a perfect choice for our collections. The wool we use comes from Abraham Moon, which is a mill that opened in the same year that Queen Victoria came to the throne, and our canvas is sourced from British Millerain and Temple Moyle mills. What are your bestsellers? The Hettie handbag in gargrave lilac is a firm favourite, and recently we’ve seen an increase in sales of our home collection of cushions and throws. Pampered pooches love all of our designs in the pet collection - with slate oatmeal and gargrave being top favourites!
What plans are ahead for Hettie? We want to slowly expand with limited editions, collaborations and introducing other ranges such as ceramics. Our collections are a perfect place to collaborate with other designers. We also want to introduce new fabrics, more lifestyle products but at the same time supporting other British brands. The launch of our collaboration last month with LK Bennett on the Darcy Pet Collection is a perfect example of this. We have a new UK sales agent, and a German agent who is exhibiting Hettie at eight exhibitions for distribution in the DACH territories. Both have said that people are hungry for British brands with a great story and heritage, and we combine both! Our story is genuine, and our collections a contemporary take on heritage fabrics. We’ve also been nominated for an award in the ‘Made in Britain’ category of the Great British Entrepreneurs Awards. The finals night is in London in November so fingers crossed!

10 MINS WITH
Contemporary silver Jewellery designer, SU FRANCE I started making things from a really early age, inspired by treks in the wild. A love of nature means I feel most relaxed when walking in woods or looking at the wildflower meadow that my hubby and I have planted near our barn. Using the macro lens on my camera also diverts my attention, as searching out small and sometimes overlooked details, is something I enjoy. For me, jewellery designing and making began nearly 20 years ago when my husband bought me a day with a maker, and I haven’t looked back! The processes that I use allows me to capture natural forms. I enjoy how I can transform something so delicate or unique into an item that can be treasured and hold so much meaning for people. I’m drawn towards organic forms, and fascinated by the structures of seeds, leaves and flowers. My work is curated; influenced by the seasons and illustrates that I take something transitory and create a longlasting sculptural piece. People have described how much they love the textures and movement of my work, as well as the calming influence that these can bring. For me, this links back to the original inspiration and the design process of each piece. Many of my pieces are created using a process called lost wax casting. I also hand form using a piercing saw to cut, and add surface patterns using my trusty hammers
“
(I have a growing collection) and of course, my torch. The process and time to make is different for every design, which may seem odd but designing, preparing, casting, cleaning up, soldering, and polishing takes quite a while. For the customer, hallmarking is assurance that the jewellery I make, has been independently certified by the Sheffield Assay Office as being made from silver. All of my silver work is solid, rather than plated and this means that my clients can trust that the items they receive are of excellent quality. My bestsellers include string of hearts earrings and pendants (an iconic heart shaped leaf linked to nature), spinner rings (which provide a reassuring fiddle element) and acorns, which have been gifted as 18th/21st birthday presents and other special occasions linked to growth. It’s been lovely to hear how much the tiny treasures I have collected or selected, are now precious, personal keepsakes. Most recently, I was commissioned to make a ring for a special birthday, with the number of textured silver facets, reflecting the age of its delighted recipient. I enjoyed crafting this commission so much that it’s a range I am now developing further. The fern jewellery I make is also very popular, and these are pieces that I choose to wear myself. I mix up this look wearing these on a short silver torc, chain, or a longer cord.
I am obsessed with ferns. I’d love to see otters in the wild – they seem to play hide and seek, whenever I get nearby! And I have a collection of rusty things!

PERFECT PARTNERSHIP We catch up with the couple from CONCRETE & WAX who combined their love for two very different materials into a handmade homeware business Concrete & Wax is far away from the careers you both left behind – tell us about yourselves?
We’re married design duo Alex Sommer and Laura Keller, the founders of CONCRETE & WAX. Since 2018 we’ve been hand making concrete homewares and fragranced natural wax pillar candles in our Suffolk workshop. Before this, we worked for over two decades in the fashion industry, which may seem incredibly different to what we do now but there is actually a lovely synergy between the two. Alex has always been inspired by the modular, intelligent design of technical sportswear (zip-off features, hidden pockets, clever multi-functional details) and this inspiration transferred to the design of our stackable and interchangeable collection of candleware. The concept allows customers to create arrangements depending on their mood by mixing colours and shapes,

bring another candle company into an already saturated marketplace, but instead to deliver interesting and unique products that are built to last.
What inspired you to put your hobbies together to create this truly artisanal product and what do you like about the two mediums – concrete and wax?
How are your products made?
We have always loved working with different material textures, combining contrasting surfaces in new ways and so, when Alex began experimenting with pouring concrete in his spare time this inspired Laura to start experimenting with wax. The two materials couldn’t have more different properties and textures, yet together they unite in a tactile and harmonious way. Seeing the materials alongside each other for the first time was a ‘POW!’ moment for us, and we knew it was our future! However, when we launched, our motivation was absolutely not to
To bring a design on paper to reality, first we commission local craftsmen to hand make prototypes (the candles from layered plywood and the concrete engineered from aluminium). Then we hand make the moulds from these prototypes, into which we pour our pieces. After curing, concrete finishing involves sanding, washing, adding a cork foot and applying a protective coating. Every item is made in small batches to ensure quality craftsmanship and all materials are sourced as locally as possible. We’re not going to lie; it has been a steep learning curve with many ‘casualties-of-pour’ along the way, but also incredibly rewarding, inspiring and a lot of fun too!
Home
Tell us more about the products you offer?
Our Modular Collection consists of different sized pillar candles and perfect partner concrete holders, however every candle also fits into larger-sized holders and every holder can be stacked on to a larger holder. Each holder is also designed to fit any standard tealight – the reason being, that we fully respect that the concrete will far outlast the candle and every piece of concrete deserves a long and happy life. Since launch, we have added container candles and reed diffusers – each with a multi-functional lid to burn tealights - as well as a range of coasters. We launched splatter concrete in the midst of lockdown following an off-piste home-schooling session where our young daughter persuaded us to ‘pour concrete like Daddy but with a Jackson Pollock twist’ rather than doing her maths! When we posted her creations on social media the reaction was incredible, so we added splatter concrete to our collection, which of course is now made by Alex.
What are your three best sellers?
Our bestselling items are our coaster sets, tealight trios and mid candle and holder sets.
Do you have any new designs in the pipeline?
Following multiple customer requests, we have just extended our tableware collection to include placemats and table centrepieces to match the coasters, so customers can have a full CONCRETE & WAX tablescape this Christmas! We are also working on a new collection of plant pots and bowls to launch in the New Year.

GET TO KNOW EDINBURGH Edinburgh seems like two separate cities – the 18th-century new town’s elegant Georgian terraced neighbourhoods from the old town’s narrow lanes, steep staircases, and hidden passageways. It’s the perfect mix of the old and new and has lots of firsts!
THE ROYAL MILE This steep street in the old town really does capture the soul of the city with historic monuments everywhere you look, including St. Giles’ Cathedral, Holyrood House Palace, and Edinburgh Castle at the top of the hill. Scattered in between, there’s souvenir shops, quaint pubs, and a hive of activity. Joining a walking tour is the best way to find out about this areas fascinating history.
ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN EDINBURGH Founded in 1670 – this garden is the second oldest garden in Britain. It’s also one of the largest, and has over 13,200 different plant species. With 70 acres devoted to a herbarium, as well as Britain’s
SCOTTISH NATIONAL GALLERY & PORTRAIT GALLERY Founded in 1859, this gallery is the country’s second major art collection and displays Scotland’s biggest collection of European paintings and sculptures. Its collection includes works from the Renaissance period right up to the Post-Impressionists. The highlight of the gallery’s is a huge processional frieze showing Scotland’s most famous personalities, including Robbie Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Sean Connery, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Stuart, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, among others.
CASTLE ON THE HILL Edinburgh Castle looms over the city from its tactical location on top of Castle Rock. It’s one of the oldest castles in the UK and like a lot of Edinburgh’s history, it’s both fascinating and gruesome! You can take a tour through the castle and learn about daring night sieges and fierce battles against the English. The Great Hall has held countless royal ceremonies throughout the centuries, and as you walk through the grand drawing rooms, you can feel the sense of stature. Lunchtime’s sees the famous One O’clock Salute from Half Moon and the impressive Scottish National War Memorial and National War Museum, and the stunning collection of Crown Jewels housed in the Royal Palace. EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE Have a laugh at the stand-up comedy show at this festival during the month of August. It’s one of the leading arts and comedy festivals in the world and features up-andcoming artists, and is known for unearthing the next generation of talent. Comedy gigs and live shows are held in lots of venues around Edinburgh from pubs to pop-up tents, and events on the streets.
PRINCES STREET This is the new town’s main thoroughfare, and is almost a mile. It’s lined with colourful gardens on one side and elegant shops on the other including Jenners of Edinburgh, which was founded in 1838 and is one of the world’s oldest department stores.
biggest palm house, a tropical house with exotic orchids, alpine house, terraced moorland garden, heather garden and arboretum with rare giant trees from the Himalayas, North America, and China.
THE MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD This isn’t just for children, the museum has a wonderful collection of old toys, including model trains, dolls, and games from around the world. The museum was the first of its kind when it opened in the early 1900s and explores the facets of growing up and looks at schooldays, trends, and fashions. There’s a rather special recreation of a Victorian streetscape finished with outdoor toys and an opportunity to dress up in period costumes and play the kinds of games our ancestors enjoyed.

reusable Christmas crackers We are looking forward to celebrating Christmas with our families and friends again this year. When the presents are bought and the tree decorated, it's time to plan our festive tables. For most, it wouldn’t be complete without Christmas Crackers. But how do we feel about all the waste they create, not to mention the rubbish contents? ‘Keep This Cracker’ has the answer – a reusable cracker you can pull. Keep This Cracker is a small business based in Manchester, run by Bea Thackeray. A packaging designer with a long history of creating products for various High Street retailers, she has worked with manufacturers in the UK, as well as Fair Trade producers across the Developing World.
“
I've been passionate about supporting local makers and manufacturers since I launched my first reusable cracker designs back in 2013. It's a pleasure to work with our favourite suppliers who care and understand the needs of the business and our customers. I’ve never understood the need to ship single use disposable products half way across the planet! - Says Bea
”
Bea creates her cracker designs from her studio, and a carton maker who is based in Cambridgeshire makes them. The other component parts and packaging are also made in the UK; including the ribbons which are woven with yarn made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The products are then packed in-house. As well as being UK-made, there are plenty of other benefits to these reusable crackers. They come flat-packed in handy reusable card wallets, so you can store your crackers away for another time. And there’s no need to worry about cheap plastic contents, as you're free to choose your own personalised gifts. The crackers are quite roomy with plenty of space for
chocolates, toiletries, jewellery, gadgets or small toys, as well as gift cards or theatre tokens – the choice is yours. The area for the gifts is 5.5cm x 5.5cm x 11cm. The crackers are 28cm long when made up. Each cracker comes with an ecosnap® your pets will appreciate too. The crackers pull like normal just with less noise. But of course, if you like your crackers to go bang, 'Keep This Cracker' will work equally well with standard (noisy) snaps. So how do you reuse these crackers? You simply remove the broken snap and replace it with a new one by threading it through the cracker and the slots at each end. Each pack of six crackers comes with printed instructions. The reusable crackers are also fully recyclable and the ecosnaps are compostable too. Replacement ecosnaps and standard snaps are available to buy in packs of 12. See the full collection online at www.keepthiscracker.com
