Welcome to our first issue of 2021! We start the year in another lockdown and with Brexit behind us! The upside is that this really is good news as us Brits are learning to appreciate our British brands more! Putting this magazine together is a lot of fun as we get to learn about more British companies with every issue that we put together for you. This time, we meet the team behind Love Delivered – who deliver fresh farm flowers direct your door. Maria Graham, the founder of Ruby Fury, shares her passion for making good fitting leggings and wait until you see the amazing designs! Laura Grayson from Little Black Outfit provides stylish black clothing for babies and we find out how her business to came to fruition during lockdown last year! With us all at home at the moment, like us, you probably need some ideas for storing all those awkward items so turn to page 34 for some ingenious solutions! Alcohol habits are changing There’s a growing trend for non-alcoholic drinks! We’ve recently been gifted the Bowser LEAF alcohol-free gin from Conker, which was perfect timing for a dry January. Bowser LEAF, suggest by its name, it’s all about the botanicals. When you open the bottle you can definitely smell the fresh aroma of herbs that Conker call honest botanicals. After the pandemic cancelled 90% of its orders for weddings, Field Gate Flowers has successfully rebranded itself to flourish in lockdown. Founder, Roz Chandler quickly realised that the business would have to diversify to survive! It’s now Laura Grayson’s mission to provide stylish black clothing all year round for babies! Tell us a bit about yourself and the inspiration behind your brand? Little Black Outfit was brought to life during the height of the pandemic last year, when I decided it was the right time to launch my first business. The inspiration behind the brand came from my struggle to find black baby clothes for my daughter. I saw a gap in the baby fashion market, as black clothing was so limited, especially in the summer months. I wanted to produce a brand that would supply fashionable, quality clothing for those searching for that ‘little black outfit’, under a name you will love and trust!
designs, as well as being inspired by celebrity styles. Rather than pinks, blues, trucks, ducks and smiley faces, I produce simple garments using a variety of black fabrics to make each one cute, comfortable, practical and stylish.
Why have you chosen to make in the UK? Making my garments in the UK has enabled me to develop a productive working relationship with my manufacturer, who is amazing! Oh-Sew-Whitty (based in Yorkshire) has helped me in everything from fabric sourcing, to pattern design, and are always on the end of the phone!

I really wanted to be able to use the LBO platform to give back to a charity that supports children. ‘Save The Children’ was the perfect choice due to the endless work they do to support children in so many different circumstances. Our ‘Just Giving Page’ is used for promoting awareness and receiving donations for this wonderful cause.
And finally, tell us three random things about yourself?
Who designs your garments and how do you decide what to make? I design all the garments myself. I don’t have a fashion background but always had an interest in being creative with clothing. I‘ve had so much fun researching and experimenting with my own
In a previous job, I was lucky enough to work for Team GB and attend the Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro 2016 and the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018 and met some amazing athletes. We saw a gap in the market for fresh seasonal British flowers direct from the grower, and offer flowers that are fresh and excellent quality, as well as real value for money. WHAT FLOWERS DO YOU GROW? We grow tulips, stocks, antirrhinums, lisianthus, celosias and serenade asters throughout the year. We also partner with other local independent growers to showcase their products too like hyacinths, sweet williams, sunflowers, oriental lilies, LA lilies, rose lilies, carthamuus, gladioli stocks, peonies, ornamental brassica, sedum, daffodils, hypericum, solidaster, statice, eryngium, agapanthus, snowberries, and alliums – there’s a lot to choose from! WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT TULIPS AND ABOUT THE GROWING PROCESS? Tulips are very special as they signify the arrival of spring. They are also such a happy flower that comes in all the colours of the rainbow. BANANA BREAD Banana bread gets a rough ride as it’s usually made when bananas need using up but during lockdown, it’s become a must-bake recipe for staying at home!
Ingredients - Serves 8-10
How to make

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Mash 3 large black peeled bananas with a fork, then mix well with 75g vegetable or sunflower oil and 100g brown sugar. 2. Combine plain flour, baking powder and cinnamon, and mix well. Add 50g dried fruit and/or walnuts. 3. Bake in an oiled, lined 2lb loaf tin for 20 minutes. Check and cover with foil if the cake is browning too quickly. 4. Bake for another 20 minutes. Test by inserting a skewer until it comes out clean. 5. Allow the cake to cool a little before slicing. It’s delicious freshly baked, but develops a lovely gooey quality the day after.

BE stylish AND ACTIVE We catch up with Maria Graham, the founder of Ruby Fury, the home of fun and good fitting leggings TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND? I left school at 16 not really having a clear idea what I wanted to do, but I’d always enjoyed making things, and thought one day I might like to run my own business. I began an apprenticeship at BKS Leather Ltd, a company that makes bespoke motorcycle leathers. I learned stitching, cutting and pattern making, and during the eight years I spent with the company I also worked on garment alterations and developing new products. I became very aware of how much it affects your mood and confidence to have clothes fitted to your individual shape, and how many people don’t fit standard sizes so I opened my own clothing alterations business.

HOW IS ROLLER DERBY YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE RUBY FURY LEGGINGS? For years, my main fitness activity was martial arts, where I’d wear a GI for training. Until I took up roller derby I hadn’t worn leggings much, and certainly not in an environment where performance and durability were so important. I was facing tough, sweaty training sessions with a lot of knocks and falls. I wanted something fun to wear that fitted perfectly. With my background in garment construction, it made sense to make my own! But it’s become so much more than just making leggings. As my brand grew, I noticed that it reflected some of the roller derby community and culture that I’m now a part of. The sport is fun and welcoming of everyone,
regardless of your fitness level, age, size, shape or background. It’s a safe place where people can be themselves without judgment. Ruby Fury wants women to feel this same empowerment to be the best version of themselves that they can be, whatever sport or activity they undertake. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT FITNESS GEAR FITS IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES. EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO TO MAKE SURE THIS HAPPENS? If your clothing is falling down, twisting or uncomfortable, you won’t be fully concentrating on what you’re doing. You need your leggings to fit like a second skin and stay put when you’re moving. With my experience in garment construction and alteration, I understand how to get a really good fit. I’m always happy to discuss sizing and how to measure yourself accurately. I can give advice if you’re uncertain about sizes or are in between sizes, and can customise the fit where necessary.
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT CHOOSING YOUR FABRICS AND DESIGNS? I talk to my customers about the designs they like and try to be led by their preferences. I aim to offer a varied range so there is something to appeal to every taste. When I’m considering a new fabric, it goes through a testing process to make sure it’s up to the job. It has to prove comfortable, durable, moisture wicking and needs to wash well. WHAT COMES FIRST FOR YOU, FITNESS OR FASHION? They go hand in hand. Fitness is very important, but fashion can really help. Not only does it show your identity, if you feel good in what you’re wearing, confidence comes naturally and you’ll get the best out of your workout. AND FINALLY, TELL US THREE RANDOM THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF? Before starting Ruby Fury, I lived in Malta for a year with my husband. I enjoy experimenting with mixing cocktails. I love to ski, but I’m not fond of heights so tend to avoid the steep slopes!
