FROM THE EDITORS... It looks like the summer is finally here! We don’t know about you but it is so nice to have a little more freedom and be able to catch up with family and friends. This issue really does have summertime at its core. As we’ll be spending more time in our gardens now, we look at ways to give it that extra attention it deserves. Days in the sun may be all the therapy we need so we also share seven go-to items to make it go swimmingly! Wellbeing is definitely on everyone’s mind and we showcase some lovely summer scented candles to put your body and mind
at ease. We also catch up with Lee from Mr Pickles who told us how his handmade business turned his mental health around! TOYS REMINISCENT OF THE PAST We catch up with Lee to see how his handmade business turned his mental health around! TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU STARTED SEWING AND WHY IT TURNED OUT TO BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH? I had been struggling with mental health issues for a few years, and wasn’t able to find any hobbies or interests to help me manage it. I was looking for a mindful activity that enabled me to switch off and focus. I started sewing in 2016 after seeing a small toy that reminded me of one of my childhood toys. Something clicked and sewing became a great tool for me to manage my mental health; it became an escape from a high-pressure job and a busy lifestyle. I spent many months working on my sewing skills, watching videos on YouTube and asking people for advice. WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM FOR YOUR DESIGNS? I had begun sketching toys that I remembered as a child then started to bring them to life and this is where Mr Pickles was born! Most of the Mr Pickles collection is based on childhood toys that either my siblings or I had. I’ve just stripped them back as much as possible to create an elegant and minimalistic linen toy. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEW ONE OF YOUR LUXURY LINEN TOYS? One Little Pickles takes approximately five hours to make. The Linen dolls a little longer due to the detail in their hair. My focus is on quality and not quantity, so
I work in small batches at a time. I would rather make less and take my time, than to rush and make mistakes. Every stitch is perfectly placed. WHAT ARE YOUR BESTSELLING ITEMS? My best sellers are the Little Pickles collection. They feature several different characters from Rabbits, Horses, Rhinos, Elephants and even Dinosaurs. All have different clothes that you can collect, so they make the perfect present to gift to any child. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SEWING TO THOSE SUFFERING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH? I can’t recommend sewing highly enough to anyone who is struggling with any mental health issues. Because you need to be focused 110% when sewing to get everything perfect, you can’t think about anything else. It’s such a positive switch off from daily life. People always say crafting is good for the soul and it really is! It has really helped me and is something I wish I had started many years before and also I have my own business that I can be proud of!

Elisa from Cocoa & Paper What did you study at University and has what you learned helped you with your business? Funnily enough, I studied Business at university what seems like many years ago, but honestly no I don’t feel it helped me get to where I am today! I felt like you step into a world of business and it’s completely different to what you learn in education. And I had to learn everything from scratch!
Where does your inspiration come from for your designs? For my chocolate bars, I always look at what I would like first then turn to my customers for market research to see what other people would like to see and it goes from there! I also try and source unusual moulds. I’m also looking into custom made ones so mine will be different than others out there too.
Do you like making chocolate or making personalised cards best? That is a really tough question. The cards don’t take long to make, but the chocolate side of my business takes up most of my time, but I would have to say the chocolate! There is so much more involved and it makes me feel proud when I can show off what I have made.
What is your best-selling chocolate gift, and do you have a favourite one that you like to make? My hot chocolate spoons are definitely my bestsellers especially through the winter months and seasonally with all the different toppers that are available. My favourite chocolate to make is the bars with all the different toppings plus the new personalised bars, which I’ve just launched which are fantastic and add a personal touch.
How has the pandemic affected your business and what’s next for Cocoa & Paper? The pandemic affected my business in such a great way, which I still can’t believe, but it has enabled me to move out of my home kitchen and into a unit to expand, so I hope it continues now to just keep growing.
And finally, tell us three random things about yourself? I have a junior black belt in Tai-Jitsu! I don’t dye my hair, and I’m a natural red head (I used to hate it!). And aside from this business, I also run my own card and gift shop.

I feel I’ve lived with Anglepoise most of my life – school homework under the light of an original black square based Anglepoise, and later acquiring various coloured styles designed in the ’60s and ’70s. One favourite, rescued from a skip, was a Yellow Apex 90, later to inform the choice of Yellow Ochre for the re-modelled Type 75 lamp. Where does your passion come from to find natural and holistic alternatives for skincare?
For me, it began with my own internal health. The problems that I was experiencing were a result of beauty products and foods that I was using/ consuming, as well as the lifestyle that I was living. Once I decided to take an alternative route using natural products coupled with a diet change, I witnessed some amazing results. The issues that I had been facing were no longer! I realised that the solution was very simple but had to be 100% consistent and holistic in order to have long-term results. At that point, I was so excited about how my mind and body were altering for the better that I just wanted to be able to share what I had learnt with those around me, and hopefully help others to also make positive changes too.
Will all your products be plant-based?
Yes, Ezili Botanics is very much my personal journey and to have products that were anything else but plantbased would be an injustice to what I believe in and who I am!

You base your holistic approach to the skin on four pillars – tell us about them?
I think a lot of people separate the mind, body and spirit but they all work in tandem in order to allow us to operate efficiently. Our four brand pillars, nutrition, mindfulness, sleep and education describes what it looks like to us to be holistic, and how these key pillars can positively impact us internally and externally. There are so many-plant based ingredients that have wonderful properties that benefit the skin and never underestimate the power of a balanced diet, and the role this plays externally. As we find ourselves constantly on the go, we can easily neglect the importance and powers of rest. Sleep is such a wonderfully restorative action. I encourage the art of slowing down, to aid us in keeping a healthy and in control state of mind, and to live with intention. My goal is to equip others with the necessary tools to make informed beauty decisions, outside of marketing propaganda.
How does our gut health affect our skin, and why are antioxidants so important?
An unhealthy gut can negatively affect the appearance of the skin, and can be responsible for spots and inflammation, especially eczema and rosacea. What we eat is so important as it feeds the trillions of bacteria that live in our gut. If you experience topical skin issues a first line of response should be to assess your diet, and to try and pinpoint foods that can be beneficial to cut down on or cut out completely. In terms of antioxidants, these are molecules that prevent oxidation and are your armour against free radicals. There are plenty of different sources of antioxidants and a great place to start is with vitamin C and E. Food sources include blueberries, raspberries and citrus fruits, plus carrots, which are known for their excellent high beta-carotene content.

The Royal Pavilion is a beautiful Indian and Oriental-inspired building and one of England’s most iconic landmarks associated with this city. It started life as a modest 18th century lodging house. Architect Henry Holland helped George, Prince of Wales, transform this humble seaside retreat into a lavish neo-classical villa. In 1815 George, now Prince Regent employed the architect John Nash, to redesign the building in the Indian style. The work was completed in 1823 when George had become King. The Royal Pavilion has a colourful history that stretches back more than 200 years and it has also been used as a civic building, First World War hospital, and now a Grade I listed building. It’s open to visitors, and you can take a tour around some f the opulent rooms including the Music Room, Royal Bedrooms and the Great Kitchen.
