The Battle within our Minds Student Association Event Recap The ride towards the makeshift war zone had my heart racing. It was my first-time paintballing and the stories of past injuries had prevented me from saying yes before. But today was different, this year I had promised myself I would be brave, I would take risks and do things I had never done before. Allowing my fear to show but not letting it control me was the key to how I planned to make that year stand out from the rest. As we arrived on the site, my butterflies were raging but I wouldn't let them dictate what I did.

I signed the waiver and put on my gear, scoping who would be on my team. With my allies by my side and myself being COVERED in layers, I was ready, and so began the first round. Sounds of shooting were heard all around me as I saw people

fall one by one. holding their hands up in surrender. I held my gun tight, not firing once but scoping the area in sheer determination. A few of my fellow soldiers had stood beside me, expressing the horror of their guns being jammed in this dangerous environment. Not soon after they marched forward towards the middle did, I see the enemy had come from behind a corner with their guns aimed straight at me. It was over. Only having positioned myself a few feet in front of where we started the round, I accepted my defeat, and so ended my first round of paintball.

The Now and Tomorrow. Featuring a Student Leader from SLAD. As the Sabbath School Coordinator for SWAU’s Spiritual Life and Development department, I’ve had the unique privilege of nurturing spiritual growth on and off campus. Our Sabbath School leadership committee is comprised of willing volunteers who love God and who are passionate about introducing Him to others. We have dove into the book of John this semester, breaking apart each story to meet the person of Jesus.

Vol. 01 | Issue #01

It has been my privilege to serve as the coordinator for this committee as I’ve seen growth in not only my leaders but also in the lives of those who attend our program each Sabbath. This upcoming semester, I will likely be stepping down from my role in SLAD and will be looking for others who would be interested in taking on the opportunity to lead this ministry. I will be more than willing to mentor you through the process if this something you feel led to pursue.

It is Possible Devotional Thought It’s hard to live in this world as a young Christian! It's like a duck swimming against the current because there are so many influences leading us in the wrong way. I knew God was calling me to ministry when I was 15, but I repeatedly rejected his call mainly because I thought I was too young and thought no one would listen to me. However, 1 Timothy 4:12 says that we shouldn't be ashamed of our youth but be an example in everything we do. In this world we have so many distractions and influences leading us the wrong way, but we can live a victorious life from sin in Jesus.

A Christmas in January! University Happenings and News On February 3rd, 2022, we were told to expect snow and icy roads. I prayed to God that He would watch over us diligently and make sure that we were better prepared for the second time around. When the snow and ice had arrived, I realized how beautiful the campus looked covered in the snow while the sun gently glistened over the snow. My walk towards the cafeteria was

God is calling you to finish his work no matter how bad and far you think you are from God, there is always forgiveness. He says, “I will be with you wherever you go”, Joshua 1:9.

something quite spectacular. I could feel the cold breeze brush against my face and as I knelt to get a feel of the snow it made my hands go numb. Being able to slide on the ice was always a fun thing to do as well, but what really made me in a cheery mood was the fact we got a four-day weekend out of this. Even though I can’t say I used the time wisely, I did enjoy the time I had. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC

Mrs. Patterson’s Inauguration Introducing our President!

Katelin Bankston As awesome as Mrs. Patterson always has been, she specifically requested to cancel all classes in the afternoon and evening so we can all celebrate together without any stress. Following the church ceremony, a meetand-greet reception will be held in the library from 2-3 pm. During this time, there will variety of booth that serves finger foods. And don’t forget to take a photo with “President Patterson” ;)

Ana Patterson Named 26th President of Southwestern Adventist University

I can never imagine in a million years that the year I am SA president, one of my favorite people at SWAU, Mrs. Patterson is now our president! What an honor for me to introduce her at the inauguration ceremony on March 1st, held in the Keene Church at 1 pm.

Vol. 01 | Issue #01

If you think this is it, well, you probably don’t know President Patterson very well — she goes all out. The cafeteria will be closed, because there will be three food trucks such as brisket nacho by the duck pond for you to choose dinner from. Or you can try all of them! Don’t you worry about money, President Patterson got you covered. President Patterson’s hope for our university is to “light the world”, we will all send off a lantern on the pound to lift up this dream together.

Life is a Journey Featuring Psychology Major Hello everyone! My name is Katelin Bankston! I am currently 19 years old, in my junior year of college, and am studying to obtain my bachelor’s in psychology. Growing up essentially a counselor for a father, I learned a lot about the ins and outs of personality, emotions, cognitive processes, external and interpersonal relationships, and techniques on how to properly manage, grow, and transform all the above and more. What a surprise I decided to study in this field in hopes of becoming a Counseling Psychologist! There have been many ups and downs in my journey as a college student, such as classes shifting continuously from in-person, to online, and back again, but it’s these ups and downs that make the rollercoaster worth riding. Life is a journey, not a destination. With every step taken, I know I’ve explored that much more in the expedition of my life.

The Women’s Basketball Team Featuring our Department of Athletic and Sports Being a part of the basketball team, this year has been a real blessing. We get the opportunity to go out of state for games where we enjoy time together as a team. For example, we went to Arkansas and Oklahoma for a couple games and got to stay at a hotel. I like traveling with the team because there's never a dull moment with them and we can always have fun around each other. Practice is a time for growth as a team, but also as individual players. After most practices we have a small worship thought and a prayer. It's always nice to have that type of vibe in a team.

As an incoming freshman it can be hard to be part of something. I was kind of nervous coming in but, the girls on the team have made me feel loved and appreciated. And the coaches are always there to help out and give me advice for my game and my life. This season has taught me to be resilient, you always have to keep your head up no matter the circumstance. Being on the team has strengthened my trust in others, teamwork, and leadership skills. Come support us this Thursday for our last game of the season!

Discover the Innovator in YOU! Featuring the brand-new Center for Entrepreneurship. “I'm broke!!!” is one of the most common phrases in a college student's vocabulary. But being broke doesn't have to be the case! Hear me out!

Many students try their hand at entrepreneurship during college – even if they are just selling cupcakes. You might be surprised to learn how many successful businesses started in a college dorm room.

We are looking for external sponsors to support our programming and student projects, but we need your help to make this happen. How?! By participating in our workshops, seminars, and events. If you show up, the sponsors will support too! This semester we are planning a wide array of activities that include workshops, seminars, networking events, and the Spark start-up competition.

Google, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, and FedEx were all started by university students. They had to deal with classes, homework, projects, and life . . . just like you. Deciding to start your own business requires pushing out of your comfort zone and trying something new, but the best reasons to start your own business are that you can fulfill your passion, pursue social justice, or support non-profits, achieve financial independence, control your lifestyle/schedule, get tax benefits, and you’ll have true job security. Ready to try?! The Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ENT) Center empowers SWAU students to start and grow successful enterprises. We are dedicated to helping students learn how to innovate and become entrepreneurs regardless of their major. The skills you learn will translate well to your future career and look great on your résumé!

Speaking of which... Do you have an innovative idea that could potentially turn into an enterprise? Do you have an idea that can change lives? Whether your ideas are for a business, non-profit organization, or mission-oriented project, we want to hear them all! The Spark competition provides SWAU students the opportunity to win a cash prize of $1500, $1000, or $700 with no strings attached! Register for Spark from March 1 - 11, 2022! Ten finalists will be chosen to present their ideas at the Spark main event on April 7, 2022! How does it work? 1. Submit a five-minute video pitch. 2. Get feedback and be informed if you are a finalist. 3. Present your idea in person for a chance to win $!

Learn how to think outside the box and develop unconventional talents and skills! The global economy is changing rapidly, and even if you don't want to start your own business, an entrepreneurial mindset can prepare you for the unmapped road.

Need help with your idea? Have questions? Email us at ent@swau.edu. You can find the requirements and the Spark application at www.swau.edu/ent.
