History of Swift Creek Mill Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill. An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company. On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956. On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere. Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADA-compliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status.
Curating a Memory For decades - perhaps longer - curious stories have circulated regarding Swift Creek Mill's lengthy past. This season, with the help of our friends at the Chesterfield County Historical Society, we hope to put the facts behind the stories. What really happened between the Randolph brothers? What role did the property play to early Americans? How was the Mill used during the Civil War, if at all? We want the heritage of this special place to be a real and palpable part of your experience at Swift Creek Mill Theatre. This part of visiting the Mill will also be an asset to the thousands of local school children who attend Youth Theatre every year. In the coming months, we plan to include historical information and exhibits in the Mill Room as we uncover more details on our fact-finding journey. As the saying goes, learning doesn't happen in a vacuum, so we welcome you to come along with us and offer your discoveries as well. Together we will "curate a memory" of Swift Creek Mill that we can pass down through the generations.
Theatre Spotlight A Swift Creek Mill Special Feature The People That Made It Happen 2013 included a long summer of jackhammers, backhoes, blood, sweat, and tears (but not too much blood.) Everyone who witnessed the demolition held their breath a bit, wondering how the rubble would ever be transformed into the promise of a brand-new-but-still-old venue. At last, the work slowed and the dust began to settle, and the beauty and charm of the building we all love came back to life. It is a project many never dreamed they'd witness. And Swift Creek Mill Theatre extends immense appreciation to those who made it possible. We are grateful and humbled by Roslyn Farm Corporation and its employees and contractors for their whole-hearted devotion the site known as Swift Creek Mill. Tackling a once-in-a-lifetime improvement like this takes a special kind of leader. At left, Lead Contractor Chris Johnson stays on top of the project (literally) while helping with the new roof. His guidance and rapport with his crew kept even the biggest challenges in perspective. Speaking of crew, not just anyone could handle the grueling tasks involved in this project. Each workday, the building and its envrions were filled with hardworking local individuals lifting, digging, hammering, painting, operating heavy machinery, you name it. These are the type of people that build things and make things happen, but rarely get mentioned, and we are thankful for every one of them - there are too many people to list! And now that we're open, and this great Season of New Beginnings has begun, we want you, our patrons, to know the difference that the community makes in our organization. When we say "we could not do it without you," we mean that - from the audience members to the cast members, and from the construction workers to the kitchen crew - we all play a role in this special building's history and this nonprofit theatre's legacy. Our community is as much a part of us as we are a part of our community. And for that we thank you.
2012 - 2013 Contributors Patrons included in this list generously gave during the Donation Year October 1, 2012, to September 30, 2013. I am so happy to welcome you to the first production of the first season in our newlyrenovated 350-year-old home. The building you’re sitting in is a national treasure, and now, finally, it is fully accessible to everyone who wants to visit! A new kitchen for preparing our famous Virginia-Style Buffet…..brand new dressing rooms for our actors….spacious bathrooms for everyone….. an elevator for your convenience….all new state-of-the-art lighting, sound and video systems in the theatre….and many other upgrades to enhance your theatre-going experience. And all of this was done without compromising the historic integrity of this spectacular property. Bottom line: we are prouder than ever of our home! And now – just to show off – I’m bringing you one of my favorite musicals, “The Drowsy Chaperone”! I have loved this show since I first saw it on Broadway, and our grand re-opening is the perfect opportunity to bring it to you. A cast of 17….a live, 8-piece orchestra….and a talented technical crew are ready and waiting to make you smile, laugh, and tap your feet. So now it’s “curtain up” on a new chapter in the Mill’s history. Thanks for being here!

Surrounded by her handpainted papers, antique books and photos, various paints and inks, she is happiest creating things with her hands. Her goal is to highlight the beauty found in nature and the beauty of art created with cast-off materials, whether in a painting showing the light patterns on a flower petal to a hand crafted silver shadow box containing bits of old lace and antique photos. SHEILA HOLLAND has been painting for 28 years now. She graduated from VCU with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking. She has been teaching painting for over 10 years with many talented students. They reside in the Enon side of Chester. DR. IVAN PERKINSON, known as the artist from Matoaca who paints churches, began painting watercolors at the age of 46. His snow scene of Swift Creek Mill Theatre has been recently reproduced as signed and numbered lithographs. On sale exclusively by the theatre, 100% of the proceeds of the sales go to the theatre. Ivan and Peggy (his wife of 50 years) live in the village of Matoaca; have 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He has served as Aftercare Director of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes for the past 10 years. Ivan’s twin brother, Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson of Richmond is also well known for his watercolors. SUSAN RUTKOSKI began taking art classes at an early age, having always been interested in drawing. Susan is a visual thinker and has a vivid imagination, which she puts to use in her acrylic paintings and pen and ink drawings. A few years ago she began taking classes from local artist Gwen Beall and has since wanted to explore other media – whatever she finds interesting.
