History Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill. An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company. On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956. On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere. Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADAcompliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status. December 2, 2015, marks the 50th anniversary of the theatre, making the Mill not only an historic structure but also an historic theatre - while looking forward to many more years serving South-Central Virginia residents and its visitors.

Some are legend, some are true, and some are a fanciful mixture of both – but Johnny Appleseed was most certainly a real man – a man who loved children, loved the outdoors, loved animals, and believed that apples could help to feed everyone and to keep them healthy. Join us for the Mill’s own musical version of Johnny’s story.

From the Artistic Director The Mill’s first production of Little Shop of Horrors opened on May 16, 1986 – almost thirty years ago – and little did we know what records it would set! We had to keep extending the run because the audiences were going crazy for our “little” show, and it ended up running for eight months (the longest-running show in the Mill’s history!). I have directed or designed five productions of Little Shop since that first run at the Mill, and it always surprises me with its ingenuity, cleverness, dark comedy, and delightful puppeteering hijinks! The original set of puppets that I built in 1986 are long gone (they were used in more than 300 performances in theaters along the east coast), but I have been hard at work bringing you a brand-new Audrey Two for your man-eating pleasure! There is a new generation of theatergoers who may not remember what a ground-breaking hit this show was when it opened offBroadway in 1982. The original Audrey Two puppets were built in Martin P. Robinson’s New York apartment (he was a puppeteer on Sesame Street – Mr. Snuffleupagus), and went on to make theatrical history with a long run off-Broadway. A film of the musical (with a VERY different ending), and a Broadway revival would all come to pass, and all based upon Martin P. Robinson’s original creation. I still LOVE this show after all these years, and am very proud to bring it to you once again – whether you’re already a fan, or just discovering it for the first time!

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle If you would like to leave your playbill here, we will be able to print fewer copies and use fewer resources. Take advantage of the online version of this playbill and other Swift Creek Mill Theatre publications by going to issuu.com/swiftcreekmill. 21

Biographies JOHN HAGADORN (Mr. Mushnik) says he “grew up at Swift Creek Mill Theatre, where he has worked more steadily than any other actor in the Richmond area for the past forty years.” Under the capable direction of Buddy Callahan and Tom Width, John has been given the opportunity to play a variety of character role favorites such as the crusty Senator in Finian’s Rainbow; the happy-go-lucky mailman from On Golden Pond; a dimwitted ball player in Damn Yankees in the Mill’s first production, to the manger of the team in the Mill’s second production and Grandpa in You Can’t Take It With You. Other favorite roles include: One half the cast in Greater Tuna, directed by Mark Costello; A Tuna Christmas; Tony in The Most Happy Fella; George in Moon Over Buffalo; and Mr. Saunders in Lend Me a Tenor, all directed by Tom Width. John also has appeared in many productions at the Barksdale Theatre, Glen Allen Center for the Arts, Richmond Triangle Players, Cadence Theatre, and Virginia Repertory Theatre. Before his steady work in theatre, John was known in Richmond’s music circles through his participation in opera and operettas at Dogwood Dell; the old Empire Theatre; and the Virginia Museum Theatre. He’s even dabbled in TV commercials and movies filmed in the Richmond area, where John was featured with Pierce Brosnan in The Broken Chain. His most special role is caretaker of his beloved cats, Cleo and Cho-Cho. John wishes to dedicate his performance to the memory of Buddy Callahan, one of the original founders of the Mill. ASHLEE ARDEN HEYWARD (Ronnette) is from Chesapeake, VA, by way of Queens, NY. This is her first show at Swift Creek but you may have seen her around town in The Color Purple and Shrek: The Musical. She is really excited to be a part of this production and grateful to have been given the opportunity. "I have had so much fun working on this show with some of Richmond's finest. I hope you all enjoy!" AUDRA HONAKER (Audrey) boasts regional credits such as: Once Upon A Mattress, Urinetown: the Musical, The Miracle Worker, Steel Magnolias, Lucky Stiff, and Moon Over Buffalo with Swift Creek Mill Theatre; Charlotte's Web, Mame, Fiddler on the Roof, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Into the Woods, Brooklyn Boy, The Crucible, The 1940s Radio Hour, and I Oughta Be In Pictures with Virginia Repertory Theatre; Angels in America: Millennium Approaches with Richmond Triangle Players; The Importance of Being Earnest, Stupid %$@! Bird, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Bootleg: Hamlet with Quill Theatre; You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown with Company of Fools; Pop! and Dog Sees God with Firehouse Theatre Project; tick tick BOOM! with Stage 1 Theatre Company. Audra has been featured on television in Killing Lincoln for National Geographic. JESSI JOHNSON (Chiffon) is beyond excited to be making her Swift Creek Mill Theatre debut! Jessi, a Richmond native, has worked with several theatres throughout the region and can be seen and heard in several local tv and radio productions. She most recently portrayed Coretta Scott King in I Have A Dream with VA Repertory Theatre, Hesther Solomon in Equus with Cadence Theatre Company and Miss Bettina Barnes in Psycho Beach Party with Richmond Triangle Players, for which she had an RTCC nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Play. Jessi would like to dedicate this performance to Becca and Ben: thanks for the unending love and support! KATRINAH CAROL LEWIS (Crystal) is blissfully fulfilling her dream of acting and singing her life away! Katrinah earned a BFA from Theatre VCU and studied Voice at Levine School of Music, Washington DC. Past credits with Swift Creek include: The Marvelous/ Winter Wonderettes, Once on this Island, Once Upon a Mattress, A Dash of Rosemary, A Grand Night for Singing and Sideshow. Biographies, continued (RTCC Award - Best Ensemble Acting) and Race produced by Carol Piersol; Ohio State Murders (RTCC Nomination -Best Actress) and Dessa Rose (RTCC - People’s Choice) with Firehouse Theatre; and Black Nativity with African American Repertory Theatre. Namaste. ADAM MINCKS (Orin, et al.) is excited to be back on the Mill stage, and super-excited to once more be playing the part of Orin Scrivello/Other Roles, as he had previously played these parts back in his senior year of high school! Previous shows at Swift Creek Mill Theatre include See How They Run, Urinetown, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Flowers For Algernon, and It Runs In the Family. A graduate of Theatre VCU, Adam has also done shows with Richmond Shakespeare, Henley Street Theatre, Sycamore Rouge, Richmond Triangle Players, Theatre LAB, Fort Lee Playhouse, and Arkansas Shakespeare, and is a three-time Richmond Theatre Critics Circle nominee for Best Ensemble, with one win among those nominations. Many thanks to Tom for the opportunity to play this role, to everybody on the cast and crew, to his large and loving immediate family, and most of all to Caroline, Ethan, Percy, and Ziggy. IAN PAGE (Seymour) is thrilled to be back on the Mill stage in one of his favorite musicals. He was last seen at the Mill this past winter as Sparky in Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings as well as Willy Whoops in Drifty and The Chocolate Factory. Past credits include his RTCC-nominated performance as Peter in bare: a pop opera and Beau/Ginch in We Three Lizas with RTP; Weasel in Two Bits: The Barbershop Musical with Swift Creek Mill, Woof (Hair) with Firehouse Theatre; and Greg in Reasons to be Pretty with Stage B. Ian was awarded the RTCC award for Best Locally Developed New Work for his play Brew. VCU ’11 DURRON MARQUIS TYRE (voice of Audrey Two) is so pleased to be a part of this iconic piece of musical theatre. He was last seen on the Mill stage as Alex in I Love a Piano. Favorite roles include Jinx in Forever Plaid and Plaid Tidings with Swift Creek Mill Theatre; Tom Collins in Rent (2010 Richmond Theatre Critic Circle Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical) and Nathan in Dessa Rose with Firehouse Theatre Project; Ugly in Honk! with Virginia Rep; and Jakob in La Cage Aux Folles with Richmond Triangle Players. When he is not on stage, he is adjunct faculty at SPARC (School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community). BEN WEST (Audrey Two manilpulation) is a Tennessee native who has come to Virginia to do...well, this. After appearing in Biloxi Blues as Eugene Jerome at the Fort Lee Playhouse, he is thrilled beyond his ability to express to be animating Audrey Two here at the Mill. A graduate of Hendrix college in Arkansas, his previous work in Tennessee and with the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre include Freddie in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Player 5 in Henry V by 6 (playing, among others, Pistol and Dauphin). He is also abysmally bad at writing bios, and so has kept this one mercifully short. TRAVIS WEST (Musical Director) is excited to work again with Swift Creek Mill Theatre and such phenomenal talent! He is a regular performer in the Richmond area both onstage and on the keys. He graduated from Appomattox Regional Governor's School with a focus in piano and holds a degree from Lee University (BA). As an ARGS student, he served as a primary accompanist for vocalists, instrumentalists, and theatre performers. While an undergraduate, he served as student director of a 100-voice university choir and several terms as bass section leader. He also led a 12-voice vocal touring ensemble in several national tours. He currently holds the position of Music Director at Chester Church of God and participates as a collaborative pianist for Old Towne Opera in Petersburg. Recent theatre credits include the Selridge in Biloxi Blues, Prince in Cinderella, Stanley in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Phil Davis in White Christmas and Tom Sawyer in Big River at Fort Lee Playhouse; and 42nd Street at Dogwood Dell. He wishes to thank his wonderful friends and family for their never-ending support and encouragement.
