History Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill. An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company. On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956. On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere. Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADAcompliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status. December 2, 2015, marks the 50th anniversary of the theatre, making the Mill not only an historic structure but also an historic theatre - while looking forward to many more years serving South-Central Virginia residents and its visitors.

Program Relaunched The Featured Ar tists Program Receives Generous Gifts for the 50th Anniversar y Season
Patrons of Swift Creek Mill Theatre have enjoyed artwork on the walls of the Historic Mill Room for many years. Five years ago, the board of directors and staff of the Mill began a program to organize the works into curated exhibits that would coincide with plays. During these years some wonderful artists, such as Dr. Ivan Perkinson, Frank Underwood, Jr., Henry Kidd, artists from the Chester Artists Association and many, many more talented individuals, have shown their art on our walls. We love our artist friends, and we believe they love the Mill, too, but it became clear that the only way to be an asset to visual artists is to provide proper lighting for their wonderful artwork. Last season, the Swift Creek Mill Board of Directors set out on a mission to accomplish the task. Putting the Featured Artists Program on hold, the Mill sought ways to implement better lighting and attract artists. Little did we know that the answer lied with some wonderful connections we already had. Dr. Ivan Perkinson has been an ongoing contributor to the program and approached the board with the idea of creating and selling prints for a new original piece of art - a fall scene of the renovated Mill Building (below). The next step was equally amazing, as Dr. Perkinson invited his brother Dr. Baxter Perkinson to participate in the kick-off to the Mill's 50th Anniversary Season. Together these dynamic twins (who are proudly 70 years-old and going strong!) decided to supply the new art lighting, exhibit in the first show of this landmark season, and support the Featured Artists Program through both financial and artistic support. The efforts of the Perkinson brothers, combined with the volunteer hours by the board and the extra efforts by Mill staff are sure to result in a fantastic series of Featured Artists and perhaps some surprises along the way. All of us here at Swift Creek Mill extend a hearty 'thank you' to the Doctors Perkinson for their commitment to the Arts. We hope you will join us again this season to see what else is in store. Featured Artists A Living Legacy of Family and Philanthropy: The Ar t of Drs. W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. and Ivan W. Perkinson The saying goes “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” It is evident by the dynamic spirit of brothers Baxter and Ivan Perkinson that talent, hard work and caring run in the family. Growing up in Powhattan County, the Perkinson twins were taught hard work, self-reliance, and appreciation for education. In fact, both worked multiple jobs in their youth and put themselves through college, earning doctoral degrees. Being active in the community came naturally to the brothers. As one of the foremost dentists in Central Virginia, Baxter grew his practice to eleven locations, eventually forming Virginia Family Dentistry, while serving the community at various times as a rector of VCU, vice president of VCU Health Systems, and member of the VCU Board of Visitors. He came to a point early on when he knew he wanted to give back and has done so generously. Ivan honed a career as a professional speaker and marketing consultant, giving presentations in 49 of the 50 states and then retired. He later became the founding minister of Matoaca Christian Fellowship, retired a second time, and has subsequently served as the After Care Director for J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes for twelve years – all the while serving on various boards, donating artwork and being actively involved where he lived and worked. Hard work, however, does not take priority over family. It is the legacy the brothers have built from their similar dreams that really matters. Baxter’s wife Elaine also put herself through college and was drawn to Baxter’s ambition and confidence. Together they have created a life in which practicality and philanthropy are priorities. Three of their four children have become dentists in the family practice, and they hope some of their seven grandchildren – the light of their lives – follow in their footsteps as well. Ivan and his high school sweetheart Peggy have been happily married since March 1963, and have 3 grown children, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The Perkinson families serve as mentors and role models for this younger generation as active community volunteers, philanthropists and artists. Baxter and Ivan both learned to paint as adults. At age 35, Baxter was inspired to learn to paint and coached by his neighbor, artist Elly Cox. At a Christmas party at Baxter’s house in 1990, Ivan was admiring his twin’s recent paintings and said “I’d give anything to paint like that.” Baxter replied, “You know it didn’t come to me naturally. It’s a skill you can learn, like playing the piano or typing. If you really want to paint, I’ll teach you. Come to my house on Saturdays and we’ll paint together.” They were 46 at the time. Today, at 70, both men are well known as professional watercolor artists in Virginia. Their paintings are strikingly different. Ivan focuses more on memories of historical settings with great emphasis on detail while Baxter is much more impressionistic and free. Though their professional careers led the two down different paths, and even as twins the brothers are very distinct, it is obvious they share some important traits: love for the arts and deep care for family and others. Through their watercolors, viewers can embrace both emotion and a deep sense of community. Swift Creek Mill Theatre is pleased and honored to present the works of these celebrated artists on the walls of the historic Mill Room.

Because of the original musical's phenomenal success, Executive Producer, Curt Wollan decided to continue the story of this same group of women, these "Steel Magnolias of the Prairie," as they deal with life, death and new adventures in the world and their lives. Eight years ago, Wollan crafted the idea of developing a new musical comedy Church Basement Ladies inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson, the creators of the best-selling book Growing Up Lutheran, that brought their unique brand of humor to the stage. It was a well-conceived project dedicated to those stalwart women of the church who volunteer to work in the church kitchen... those under-appreciated ladies of the church who cook and arrange the food and coffee for weddings, youth gatherings, and pot luck suppers... our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and moms. With their heartwarming humor and hilarious antics, Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping! takes us from serving the High School students at the Luther League Banquet to a church-sponsored Missionary Night and the rise and fall of a Viking's Super Bowl Sunday. From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young mom-to-be, these women find strength in each other as they deal with the joys and upheavals from below the "House of God!" In developing an all-new score and script for the sequel, Wollan gathered an impressive new creative team. He's merged the talents of composer/ songwriter Drew Jansen, who wrote the original score and the lyrics for Church Basement Ladies with another well-known Twin Cities composer, Dennis Curley, arranger of the stage version of Schoolhouse Rock Live! based on the popular TV series. Known for her comedy sketches and as head writer for the Medora Musical, Greta Grosch collaborated with this music duo to develop the script. Article excerpted from original production press release. Biographies Robin Arthur (Vivian) is delighted to be both down in the basement and up on the Mill stage! A native of Richmond, Robin enjoys working as an actor, choreographer, director, and teacher. Credits include: Honky Tonk Angels, Church Basement Ladies, Das Barbecu, and Radio Gals at Swift Creek Mill Theatre; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Clean House, Into the Woods, and Mame at Barksdale Theatre; Shrek, Honk!, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Seussical, with Theatre IV; and Death of a Salesman, Carousel, and Side By Side By Sondheim with Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. Tara Callahan (Signe) is delighted to be returning in Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping with this terrific cast after enjoying the original so much! Richmond area shows include Pump Boys & Dinettes, Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical Show, A Christmas Survival Guide, Blanche in Broadway Bound and Doris Walker in Miracle on 34th Street with Henrico Theatre Company; Almost, multiple roles in Maine, Kathryn in Radium Girls with CAT; and multiple roles in Reckless with Firehouse Theatre Project. A graduate of the University of Miami (FL) Musical Theatre Conservatory she is now a stayat-home mom to her four-year-old daughter, Charisma, and two-year-old son, Rhys. Thanks go to her family (especially husband, Michael) for holding down the fort at home during rehearsals and performances. Terri Moore (Karin) began her acting career on this very stage more than 40 years ago, and is very happy to return even if she is in the "Basement." Other favorite roles have included Jack's Mom in Into the Woods here at The Mill, Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music, Charlotte Hay in Moon Over Buffalo and Lily Garland in On the 20th Century with Henrico Theatre Company; Miss Tweed in Something's Afoot at CAT; and Louise in Always, Patsy Cline with VARep, for which she garnered a nomination for Best Supporting Actress from the Richmond Theater Critics Circle. In 2005 she was awarded Best Actress in a Feature Film by the Bare Bones International Independent Film Festival for her role of Nora Machiavelli in Paladin Pictures' When Love Walks In. Most recently she has been bitten by the directing bug and had the opportunity to direct Anything Goes at her alma mater, Tucker High School and will be directing the One Act Festival at Henrico Theater Company this February. Love to Leah and Georgi for their constant encouragement, help and support. Phil. 4:13 Brian Vaughan (Pastor) is happy to be returning to Swift Creek Mill in the role he played a few years back in the original Church Basement Ladies. He has learned alot about these Lutheran ladies, and this basement kitchen reminds him alot of growing up in the Presbyterian church with his mother so many years ago. Being no stranger to the Mill, past favorite shows include, Forever Plaid, Plaid Tidings, Children of Eden, Big River, Me and My Girl, Godspell and many others. Brian has also been seen around Richmond performing at, Dogwood Dell, Theatre IV, St. John's Players, Cadence Theatre Company, Ft. Lee, and Henrico Theatre Company. Biographies continued Joshua N. Wortham (Guest Music Director) is honored to be making his Swift Creek debut as Music Director for these fabulous Church Basement Ladies! As the Director of Music and Organist for Chester United Methodist Church, he is quite a fan of church ladies! Theater credits include Ring of Fire: the Johnny Cash Musical Show, Das Barbecu, Annie Get Your Gun, and The Case of the Dead Flamingo Dancer, with Henrico Theater Company; plus White Christmas with the Theater Company at Fort Lee. Joshua is also the Founding Director of Chester Community Chorus, and the Director of the Richmond Men’s Chorus. Ingrid Young (MAVIS) is thrilled to be performing the role of Mavis again at Swift Creek Mill. This summer she performed as the Housekeeper in Man of La Mancha at Dogwood Dell. Other credits include The Music Man, My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music with VA Rep and To Whom it May Concern and Godspell at Cadence Theatre.

The buffet is offered in the main-level Mill Room and may be offered in the lower-level Granite Room, followed by the performance in the second-floor theatre. Special Needs: We can best serve you when we know your needs at the time of your reservation. Elevator access and wheelchair seating are available for main level dining and second-floor theatre performances. Granite Room dining requires the use of stairs. Dining room assignments are made prior to the show date; please let our staff know your needs – physical, dietary, or other – in advance so that we may assist you. Dining: Reservations are required for dining. Swift Creek Mill features dining in a refined, historic atmosphere. Our famous Virginia-style Buffet is offered prior to Mainstage performances. Doors open for dining two hours before curtain. Meal price includes coffee, tea or water, appetizer, main course buffet, and dessert. Sodas and bar drinks are not included. Tax is applied to meal and a la carte items in accordance with state and local law. Our wait staff works hard to provide exceptional service. Gratuity is appreciated. Gift Certificates: Gift certificates are redeemable for two years. Promotional 38
