Featured Artist Eleanor Cox specializes in watercolors that feature color and light in the landscape and garden. Her work focuses on Virginia, but she has traveled abroad annually for 30 years to paint en plein air in England, Ireland, France, and Italy.

Holding a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she has won many local and regional awards, including honors from the Southern Watercolor Society, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, and the Virginia Watercolor Society, all of which she is an artist member. Her work is in many private and corporate collections, including Forbes Magazine, Wells Fargo Bank, Philip Morris Corporation, CSX, Capital One, First Union Bank, and the former James River Corporation.

Letter from the President Dear Mill Family Member, If you have attended plays at the Mill for any length of time, you have probably heard or read that the playhouse was started in 1965 by three local families. Even though that was a much different time, the allure and excitement of professional theatre drew patrons from all over Central Virginia as well as bus tours from up and down the east coast, much like it does today. Despite the plethora of diversions that exist today, there is no experience quite like live theatre, and nobody does it quite like the Mill.

Mainstage plays make up a large part of the core programming at the Mill.

What may seem like a secret formula that makes everything happen is really a huge team of staff and volunteers who each play a role behind the scenes to ensure a phenomenal experience for our guests. In fact, many months of work precede every production that graces the Mill’s stage. It begins each fall when Artistic Director Tom Width develops a proposal for the season beginning the FOLLOWING fall – a full year in advance. After input and deliberation, the Swift Creek Mill Theatre Board of Directors votes on the plays, and before the end of the year the work of planning and communicating an exciting new season begins. Licenses are secured and each show is carefully packaged within the season. Show information is entered into websites, community calendars, press releases, ticketing software and marketing materials. Closer to show dates artists and designers are hired, sets are built, and props are gathered.

After hours and hours of rehearsals, it is show time.

As you continue to join us for future musicals, thrillers, dramas, comedies and premieres, we hope that you will see yourself as we see you, not as a customer or only as a patron of the arts, but as part of the Mill Family. Writing the Wrongs The play are you attending is not for the faint of heart; it has been known to cause viewers to lose control. On two separate occasions patrons attending this show’s debut run at the Mill required ambulance services. Deathtrap is just that good. In fact, the play ran for about 1,800 performances in New York - Broadway’s longest running comedy-thriller.

(Coincidentally, Marian Seldes, the actress playing Myra Bruhl on Broadway, was in every single performance and garnered a Guinness World Record for it.)

It should come as no surprise that Ira Levin, the brain behind Deathtrap, is responsible for other fiendish delights, such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives. But what causes an artist to create such dark and ingenious plots that they become theatrical and literary standards? By all appearances, Levin, who passed in 2007, had a normal life and childhood. He loved writing and craved perfection, which caused him to write somewhat less than his contemporaries.

He enjoyed writing scripts more than novels, referring to the theatre as his “mistress” and books as his “wife,” and he never wrote screenplays. (His books and plays were adapted by others.) No matter the medium, his hits are said to have inspired classic horror movies and even the career of Steven King.

However, these facts still do not reveal what prompted the writer to raise the bar as he did... only then to have a character beat someone with it. The ordinary, seemingly uncreepy life of Ira Levin leaves no clue. Or does it?... It is rumored that the telescope that sat by the window of his Park Avenue apartment focused on much more than constellations. But in the end, and regardless of whether he himself had a predilection for peculiarity, Levin will long be remembered for his inventive and magnetic masterpieces like Deathtrap - that keep us on the edge of our seats.

From the Artistic Director I love the way Ira Levin jerks you around…. he grabs you by the brain, and makes you think “this” and then “that”, and then “this” again, and then “gotcha”! It’s absolutely masterful! I first did this play when it was brand new, back in the early 80’s, and I was directed by the wonderful Maggie Jackson, who remains a friend to this day. She had played the role of Myra on four national tours (opposite the likes of William Shatner, Leslie Nielsen and David McCallum), and she knew all the ins and outs of how this play works. I’ll never forget all the fun of finding out the juicy “insider” tricks about how to make it happen, and scaring the bejesus out of our summer stock audiences – good times!

I decided to leave the play’s timeframe as written – 1978.

Many of the plot twists hinge on things like “carbon copies” and manual typewriters, along with pop-culture references important to the storyline. I find that it works just fine this way, and allows Mr. Levin’s plot to unfold as he intended. As you watch the play, don’t be afraid to be afraid….after all, you don’t come to a thriller to relax! Have a great time and enjoy the ride!

Biographies JEFF CLEVENGER (PORTER MILGRIM) is delighted to be back on the Swift Creek Mill stage. It’s been eleven years since he was in the show Lucky Stiff. He has always enjoyed his time working at Swift Creek Mill performing in several kid’s shows and Mainstage comedies, including The Cocoanuts as Chico Marx. He was last seen in Perfect Arrangement at Richmond Triangle Players, and before that as Dev in Stupid F**king Bird with Quill Theater, for which he was nominated for an RTCC award.

He won an RTCC award for his portrayal of Polonius and the grave digger in Quill Theatre’s production of Hamlet. As a Richmond theater veteran, he has had the honor of working with a lot of our great local theaters and in D.C. as an actor, director and designer. He also directed a national tour of Comedy of Errors for The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton.

He is a member of Comedy Sportz, and The Comedy Coalition. By day, he’s a school teacher in Colonial Heights Middle School, where he gets some of his most rewarding laughs from his students.

BROOKE EWELL (MYRA BRUHL) is thrilled to be making her Swift Creek Mill Theatre debut as Myra. She recently appeared in Huguenot Community Players’ production of Mrs. Parliament’s Night Out. She would like to thank her family for their never-ending support and encouragement.

JENNIFER FRANK (HELGA TEN DORP) loves performing at Swift Creek Mill. She was most recently seen here as Carlene in The Hallelujah Girls and Vernadette in The Dixie Swim Club. She is excited to help Tom work his magic with the rest of the talented cast and crew of Deathtrap.

She has recent Richmond Triangle Players experiences to mention, having appeared as Barbara Grant this past fall in Perfect Arrangement and as Wren in Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche last season. She has also recently enjoyed working with Quill Theatre in their Shakespeare and classic productions. Film credits include a Virginia Lottery commercial, and VCU Films. She has performance degrees from Tulane University and The Catholic University of America, and has appeared in regional productions from New Orleans to Baltimore to New Jersey. She thanks you for supporting live local theatre.

RICHARD TRAVIS (SYDNEY BRUHL) is very excited about returning to the Mill stage to recreate this role in Deathtrap. Richard has been part of the Richmond Theater Community as an actor and teacher since arriving here in Richmond in 1980. During that time he received three Richmond Times Dispatch Critic’s Awards (Phoebes) for his acting performances

Biographies (cont’d.) which included the role of Sydney. Most recently, Richard was seen as Robert Livingston in 1776 at VA Rep this season; Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha at the Festival of the Arts at Dogwood Dell, and Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof and the dual role of Jupiter/Amphitryon in Olympus on my Mind with VA Rep. Currently he is narrating and producing audiobooks for Audible. His most recent project, Finding a Fallen Hero, the Death of a Ball Turret Gunner by Bob Korkuc is available on audible. com. After Deathtrap closes here at the Mill, Richard will move on to the upcoming production of The Heir Apparent with Quill Theatre, which opens the beginning of April. But for now, sit back, relax if you can and … let the mayhem begin!

CALEB WADE (CLIFFORD ANDERSON) was last seen on the Swift Creek Mill stage in last year’s production of The Little Lion and is grateful to be back with such a wonderful group of actors. Other recent theatre credits include A Christmas Story: The Musical, 1776, Junie B. Jones: The Musical, Croaker: The Frog Prince Musical (RTCC Nomination) and The House at Pooh Corner with Virginia Rep; Green Day’s American Idiot (RTCC Nomination) with Firehouse Theatre; Our American Cousin with Quill Theatre; Carrie: The Musical (RTCC Nomination) with 5th Wall Theatre; We Three Lizas with Richmond Triangle Players; Time Tells with TheatreLAB; Soldier Come Home at Beacon Theatre; and West Side Story, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, Life Below Zero (VTA Award Best Actor) with Troubadours Theatre. The buffet is offered in the main-level Mill Room and may be offered in the lowerlevel Granite Room, followed by the performance in the second-floor theatre.

Special Needs: We can best serve you when we know your needs at the time of your reservation. Elevator access and wheelchair seating are available for main level dining and second-floor theatre performances. Granite Room dining requires the use of stairs. Dining room assignments are made prior to the show date; please let our staff know your needs – physical, dietary, or other – in advance so that we may assist you.

Dining: Reservations are required for dining. Swift Creek Mill features dining in a refined, historic atmosphere. Our famous Virginia-style Buffet is offered prior to Mainstage performances. Doors open for dining two hours before curtain. Meal price includes coffee, tea or water, appetizer, main course buffet, and dessert. Sodas and bar drinks are not included. Tax is applied to meal and a la carte items in accordance with state and local law. Our wait staff works hard to provide exceptional service. Gratuity is appreciated.

Some Mainstage productions may include the use of strong language, special or strobe lighting, non-harmful fog machines, and/or other devices and techniques. Notice is given prior to these performances. Please feel free to inquire about the content and nature of a production prior to the show.

Smoking Policy: Swift Creek Mill Theatre maintains smoke-free buildings. The dining rooms are subject to the same Virginia smoking laws for restaurants.

Occasionally, smoking by actors may be appropriate for the accurate portrayal of individual characters or the truthful telling of the story and is not intended to be construed as approval or glorification of the behavior of smoking.

Inclement Weather: In the event a show is canceled due to inclement weather, a rain check, refund or alternate performance date will be offered at the discretion of Management.
