2013-2014 Call to Artists Swift Creek Mill Theatre is seeking Virginia artists to exhibit artwork during the 2013-2014 “Season of New Beginnings.” We are excited to present a newly renovated and accessible venue along with a fantastic season. Each art exhibition will coincide with a Mainstage production and include one or more Featured Artists (juried by the Selection Committee.) Please read the following information for details and selection criteria.

A musical for people who love musicals! Winner of 5 Tony Awards! A die-hard musical theatre fan is playing his favorite cast album, “The Drowsy Chaperone”, on his turntable, and as he listens, the musical literally bursts to life in his apartment, telling the story of a vivacious Broadway starlet trying to find her true love. Sh-boom! Sh-boom! The Crooning Crabcakes (the boys who were banned from the Wonderettes prom) are rehearsing for the Dream of a Lifetime Talent Search, hosted by Big Whopper Radio. Their dream of making it to the big-time is complicated by romantic entanglements with their coach, Lois, and their 60’s doo-wop songs say it all: “Fools Fall in Love”, “Earth Angel”, “Runaround Sue”, “Unchained Melody”, “The Glory of Love”, and 17 more hits. Winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Best Musical Award. You’ll be humming these tunes all the way home! Theme “The 1950’s”

A life in song! With her legendary 1961 comeback concert as the backdrop, Judy Garland (played by Richmond phenom Grey Garrett) leads the audience through a whirlwind of memories starting with her childhood days in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to the studios of MGM, marriages and divorces, and finally to Carnegie Hall. It’s a life packed with love, passion, courage, and resilience, featuring some of the greatest songs of the 20th century. A cast of fascinating characters helps her tell her story. Don’t miss it!

Selected artists will be notified by email or phone at least three weeks prior to the show. Include full contact information, a brief bio and/or artist statement, and specify the production(s) during which you are interested in showing artwork. Art may not protrude more than 3 inches from wall. Work Media Any visual art that is meant to be hung on a wall surface (ex.: mixed media, painting, hanging sculpture, mosaic, photography, pen and ink, etc.) Selection Process Featured Artists are selected prior to a Mainstage production by a committee of Board members and/or staff of Swift Creek Mill Theatre. Guest jurors from the community may be included from time to time. Selection criteria include, but are not limited to: artistic merit, theme, creativity and overall appearance. Accepted Art Work must be: able to be hung from standard picture hangers, nails, screws, Specifications or other pre-approved method; presented in a clean, professional-looking manner; suitable for viewing by all audiences. Accompany each piece with: title, dimensions, medium and price or NFS (“not for sale”). Reception When a reception is available, it is held the night of Invitational Dress Rehearsal; drinks and desserts or hors d’oeuvres are available for purchase; friends, family and clients may attend the reception and the dress rehearsal that follows, free of charge. Publicity Thousands of culture-minded individuals see the artwork displayed during each production; exhibition information is presented on swiftcreekmill.com; information is given to interested patrons on-site; In most cases, featured artists benefit from the following: mention or biography in the concurrent show playbill; artist reception; social media posts; other advertising and press releases as available. Sales Sold artwork remains on display throughout the exhibition, except in extenuating circumstances. Sales are directed to the artist. Any checks that may be received are made out to the artist. A 10% referral is due when a purchase of a featured artist’s work is the result of contact with Swift Creek Mill Theatre. No commission is withheld.
