For The Love Of Pets It ’s a curious
thing to consider the profound effect that pets have on our lives. Maybe it’s because the relationship is not complicated by selfish motives on the part of our faithful friends. Sure, they can be possessive of their food, needy of the affections of their people, and protective of their families, but there is often an unconditional love and loyalty that is unmatched in other relationships. An innocence. A purity of purpose. Amidst the stress of daily life, our pets provide comfort, humor, and acceptance. And many an otherwise stoic and hard-edged human is reduced to baby talk and silly Facebook posts of the one thing that can melt their heart. On a personal note, I recently had the gut-wrenching experience of saying goodbye to my precious Cocker Spaniel, Grace, that I rescued 16 years ago in Houston. Agonizing over letting her go was compounded by my second guessing the right thing to do and when to do it. If she could choose, would she want more time, or to cross the rainbow bridge? How was I to know? The next
difficult decision was whether to cremate or bury her. The process was just overwhelming. Despite it being such a difficult situation, I must thank Dr. Liza Ledet of Mandeville Animal Hospital who helped me manage Grace`s declining health over the past two years and Dr. Ashley Geoghegan of VetNaturally along with Dr. Pellegrin. I could not be more thankful to these veterinarians and their caring staff for giving me the gracious gift of more time with Grace, the information to make my decision, and the compassion to help me through it. I can’t say enough about these doctors and the other talented and caring animal care professionals that are featured in this issue. For all of them, I know it is more than a profession. It’s a calling — it must be to handle the physical, mental and emotional challenges day after day. Entrusting the health of our precious companions to a caregiver is no small decision. Advances in technology and techniques these professionals offer allow our beloved pets the ability to live longer, healthier and more productive lives. There are more and more options to enhance pet health and well-being, and we are proud to showcase area veterinarians who deliver cutting-edge medical advances along with heartfelt compassion. Our pets that we hold dear are family. The love we have for them warms our hearts and brings joy that cannot be measured. “I think having an animal in your life makes you a better human.” — Rachael Ray

VetNaturally • DVM - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine • CVA - Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist • CVCH - Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist • CVFT - Certified Veterinary Food Therapist • CCRT - Certified Canine Rehab Therapist • CCRV -Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinarian WHY DO PETS NEED VETNATURALLY? We offer holistic, full-service treatments for pets. We have two full-time doctors who are extremely passionate about the integrative approach to total pet wellness. If your pet is family, and your goal is for your pet to live his longest and healthiest life, come see what we do here! WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART? VetNaturally is more than my veterinary practice - it’s my life’s mission. Our team works diligently to educate owners in person and online. We want our patients to thrive. Christian Pellegrin, DVM VetNaturally • DVM - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine • CVA - Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (Dec. 2022) • Fear-Free™ Certified
WHY DO PETS NEED VETNATURALLY? Before working at VetNaturally, I was a solo doctor at a strictly western practice. I really had no idea what an integrative practice was or how it would benefit my patients. The difference in how we approach patient care is truly unique and better than western alone. Having western and eastern treatment options available helps me to be a more effective practitioner. WHAT SERVICES ARE YOUR SPECIALTIES? Total wellness is our focus. I especially love cardiology, and cardiac health is a priority here at VetNaturally. My fiancé is a feline only practitioner, so I’m always up to date with the latest and greatest treatment for cats. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT ABOUT YOUR JOB? It’s imperative that the patient and client both feel welcome. If you can’t communicate effectively with the client, the patient will suffer. We allow enough time during exams to address all questions and concerns an owner may have. We also give hand-written discharge instructions, so there isn’t any confusion about the treatments. WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART? Soon, I will be certified by the Chi University in acupuncture. Then, there will be two doctors here who understand the integrative approach. Plus, we are a rehabilitation center. We have a state-of-theart facility and the most advanced equipment for patient care and patient monitoring. VetNaturally is an epicenter of pet wellness. I’m grateful to be a part of such a unique hospital.

Melissa Blazevich DVM
Dr. Melissa Blazevich
grew up on a farm where she
loved caring for all animals, especially, cows and horses. During her freshman year at Southeastern Louisiana University, she made the decision to commit to a career in veterinary medicine. As a third-year student at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine she developed a strong interest in veterinary dentistry. She pursued that specialty after graduation with a rigorous internship at Texas A&M followed by a three-year Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery Residency Program at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. Dr. Melissa explains, “Dentistry and oral surgery is a very specialized area. When I was a student at LSU, there was not a dentistry program during my clinical rotations, so I went to Houston to complete an externship. After going through the rotation in dentistry and oral surgery, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I immediately knew I found my niche.” While working for him before vet school, Dr. Melissa was inspired by the late Dr. Bob Hancock who founded South Paws with his wife Jennifer. “I loved working at South Paws and wanted to bring my knowledge in dentistry and oral surgery back to the clinic. I learned a lot from Dr. Bob. Returning to South Paws and starting dentistry and oral services in October of 2020 felt like I was coming home.” Dr. Melissa says most of her clients do not even realize dentistry and oral surgery specialties exists until their pet is in need. Her services are the first of their kind on the Northshore. “General veterinarians will refer their patients to me for services such as root canal therapy of a fractured tooth, oral cancer and maxillofacial trauma, such as getting hit by a car. As this specialty grows, we can learn more and treat more.” While many veterinarians do general dental cleanings, Dr. Melissa says she offers the full gamut of dental care and oral surgery. “I start with a complete dental cleaning, an oral exam which includes full mouth probing, and a complete set of intraoral x-rays. If treatment is needed – such as a tooth extraction – it can be done immediately. Some of my favorite patients are police dogs. Bite work is essential in their line of duty, so they’ll come in for a fractured tooth to receive root canal therapy. My goal is to protect the affected tooth so that the K-9 Officer is able to return to work and do their job without pain or discomfort.” Dr. Melissa says she also enjoys working on cats and has worked on larger animals in a zoo setting. “I love big cats. It would be a great goal achieved if I could work on Mike the Tiger.” Dr. Melissa Blazevich is a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine with her practice limited to dentistry and oral surgery at South Paws Veterinary Specialists. South Paws is located at 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-809-1590 or visit southpawsvet.com. 10 Sophisticated Woman | August - September 2022

Rose Lemarié DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Rose Lemarié brings decades of surgical experience to the South Paws team which she joined in January of 2021. The multitalented surgeon grew up in Arkansas and attended college on a music scholarship, but her love of science and animals ultimately led her to veterinary school. She received her DVM from Louisiana State University in 1991 followed by an internship in Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery at the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lemarié completed her Master’s Degree in Veterinary Clinical Sciences (LSU 1997) and Residency training in Veterinary Surgery (LSU 1998) to became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. As a specialty practice, patients are referred to South Paws by general veterinarians when they need advanced care. Dr. Rose explains, “I’m here for when there’s a specific problem a regular vet isn’t trained to do. We maintain a close relationship with our referring vets and keep them informed regarding treatment and any ongoing needs.” While certified to perform any veterinary surgery, Dr. Rose is known for her expertise in orthopedic and neurological surgeries. In 2000, Dr. Rose co-founded Southeast Veterinary Specialists in Metairie where she served as head of the Surgery Department. That practice grew in popularity and size, and was eventually bought out by an even larger corporation. “I could’ve stayed after the practice was bought, but it wasn’t my style. I couldn’t wait to come back to work in an atmosphere that feels more personal. After Jen's husband Bob’s passing, she Hancock decided to continue running South Paws, which they had built together. She’s assembled a small but very talented and loyal core team. They are dedicated to her and to giving excellent veterinary care. I feel appreciated here and my feeling for them is mutual.” Along with the camaraderie among staff, Dr. Rose says the smaller organization offers other benefits including having more time to care for patients and to focus on the relationship with the client. “I didn’t want to work in a corporate-type atmosphere. This is the way I love to practice. South Paws is family oriented, and I can give individualized care and personal attention.” Although smaller in staff, there is no compromise in technology or talent. “Bob had set up the practice so well in terms of specialty equipment to achieve his vision and philosophy – it’s the perfect situation for me to give the best care possible.” Dr. Rose Lemarié is a Board-Certified Small Animal Surgeon at South Paws Veterinary Specialists. South Paws is located at 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-809-1590 or visit southpawsvet.com

Eugene Jenkins, DVM CROSSPOINT VETERINARY HOSPITAL • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • B.S., Animal Nutrition Science West Virgina University • Fear-Free™ Certified • AAHA Accredited DR. EUGENE JENKINS was inspired to become a veterinarian as a young boy. His family always had a dog or cat growing up, and he enjoyed the responsibilities of their care. At the young age of 15, he started working in a veterinary clinic as a kennel assistant, and his love for animals has grown ever since. He earned his undergraduate degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences from West Virginia University and went on to study at Ross University finishing with a clinical year at LSU to obtain his Veterinary Degree. He is now a proud member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The most important part of his job, says Jenkins, is the comprehensive exchange of information. “Clients need appropriate communication from me about their pet’s needs. It’s also important that I communicate amongst staff in order for our veterinary hospital to function effectively and efficiently. The most difficult communication is when I have to inform owners of fatal illnesses that their pets may have, but I strive to do so with empathy and to offer ways to make their beloved companion as comfortable as possible.” Jenkins says the goal at Crosspoint is to educate clients about exceptional pet care, public health, promote healthy pets with happy clients and offer the most reasonable, comprehensive veterinary care available. He believes Crosspoint Veterinary Hospital is unique in that they go above and beyond their clients’ expectations. “Dr. McHughes and I want our clients to be involved in the information for their pet’s care and wellbeing. We make sure that owners have no concerns before leaving our hospital. The staff is incredibly compassionate and knowledgeable.”

Christie McHughes, DVM CROSSPOINT VETERINARY HOSPITAL • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • B.S., Zoology - Southeastern Louisiana University • Fear-Free™ Certified • AAHA Accredited WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VET? As a little girl, I grew up on a farm and enjoyed animal care. My older sister and I were very involved in 4-H and FFA, so we would wake up very early before school and feed and milk our champion Jersey cows. In addition to my cows, I always had a cat as a pet, and I knew that I would always continue in animal care. Veterinary medicine is my passion. WHAT IS UNIQUE TO YOUR BUSINESS? We have superior anesthetic monitoring systems including capnography, digital dental radiography, class IV laser therapy, oxygen cages for emergencies, ultrasonography, separate isolation and ICU services. We are among only 12% of veterinary hospitals in the US and Canada accredited and following the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines and hold ourselves to the highest of standards. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB? Communicating and educating clients is paramount. Pets are living longer and quality animal healthcare is the reason. I help pet owners understand the importance of routine blood work, a good diet, weight control and preventatives for parasites. Watching for trending abnormalities on bloodwork and implementing an early treatment protocol helps maintain the lives of our pets. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? My job is so rewarding. I love when pet owners come in with new additions to their family. Whether it be a life-saving surgery or early detection and treatment, we want to offer the best services and care. My goal is to make sure that these pets have a happy and healthy life, and I feel that I can help pet owners achieve this. That's when I sit back and smile.

DOGS
Dogs can see shades of blue, yellow, green and gray. The color red registers on a gray-scale in a dog’s vision. Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears. Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds up to about 19 miles per hour when running at full speed. Experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second. Domesticated for more than 10,000 years, the dog was one of the first animals tamed by humans.
CATS
A cat’s memory can last as long as 16 hours, exceeding even that of monkeys and orangutans. A cat’s tongue is scratchy because it’s lined with papillae, tiny elevated backwards hooks that help to hold prey in place. A pack of kittens is called a kindle, and a pack of adult cats is called a clowder. Cats have more than 100 vocal sounds. A cat can jump as much as seven times its height.
BIRDS
To survive, every bird must eat at least half its own weight in food each day. A bird’s resting heart rate is 400 beats per minute. Americans own more than 60 million pet birds. Larger parrots such as macaws and cockatoos live more than 75 years. In crested birds, a raised crest indicates the bird is excited or happy to see you. A completely flat crest indicates fear.

IS A time for vacations, afternoons by the pool and weekends at the water park! While you and your loved ones gather for vacation this summer, please take a moment to remember the many animals at Northshore Humane Society’s shelter that are not so fortunate. Unlike newer facilities, our dog kennels were built with indoor and outdoor runs, separated by open doggie doors. Even with constant upkeep on our main AC systems and several commercial fans running 24/7, the dog kennels never reach a comfortable temperature. The summer heat is always a struggle here at NHS, especially for dogs like Scruffy. Scruffy, as his name suggests, is a large breed mix with a double, long-haired coat. Scruffy is also 13 years old and has called our shelter his home for almost two years. This innocent senior pup has spent two summers in the uncomfortable heat here. He, like all our homeless dogs, deserves a cool, air-conditioned home where he can enjoy the last few years he may have left. Scruffy is just one of many large breed mixes who is temporarily calling our shelter his home. Even if you are unable to adopt, you can still help by making a donation today. With your support, we can ensure Scruffy and shelter dogs like Scruffy are safe and as comfortable as possible while searching for their forever home.

Tending the Family Tree WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
TREES HAVE LONG been symbols of life and growth and venerated in religions and mythologies around the world. In Louisiana, where over half our state is forested, these botanical brethren offer food and shelter for humans and wildlife alike. They filter our air and water, slow storm surge, and are an integral part of our landscape and culture. And while they represent beauty and strength, these usual benefactors can also turn destructive when our weather turns severe. For as long as she can remember, Katelyn Zeigler’s life has been intertwined with trees. “My best childhood memories are from our house in Folsom. My dad built a lot of it himself on his eight acres. We rode four wheelers, fished in the pond, and this one big oak tree – it was our playground and another world for me and my brother. We had no idea how hard times were for our parents back then financially. They protected us from that.” Today, at 28, Katelyn is the CEO and CFO of Zeigler Tree, the company her father, Sean, began over 20 years ago. With Sean as president and younger brother, Korey, as Vice President, the company is a reflection of the family tree. “Since I was around five, I’ve watched him build this company up from nothing, and it’s made him my idol.” As Katelyn scales an oak on the Mandeville lakefront during her photo shoot, it harkens back to a childhood exuberance that has matured into a confidence and unrelenting determination to come out on top of whatever opportunities life brings – just as her father did. By the time Katelyn was attending Southeastern as a business major, she was already working fulltime at Zeigler Tree handling phones, data input on quotes and sales, receivables and collections, surveys, photos and permit applications. “At that time, it was just me, my mom and dad, and my uncle with one or two crews – maybe a total of 15 people. I did a lot of the office work by myself for six or seven years. At the time, I was also the youngest person to receive their arborist license in Louisiana at 17.” And while the ambitious teen seemed destined to follow in her parents’ footsteps, she did consider other paths. “I love the artistic realm and was particularly drawn to fashion. I had an online boutique for a year, but to really make it in fashion means moving to New York or Los Angeles. The sacrifices that my parents made to build this business are so meaningful to our family, I decided I had to be a part of it. Now we have at least 50 employees and six crews. Our ongoing growth is challenging but also very rewarding.” While Katelyn says that she is humbled and appreciative to be given so much responsibility by her father, the journey has required tenacity. “First, it’s hard to gain respect as a female in such a masculine profession. Even though Korey runs the crew side of the business, that’s still a lot of testosterone to deal with. Also, as the child of the owner, there’s a lot of assuming I was given my position without earning it. I have to be tough, maintain boundaries and work beyond reproach by being on top of every area and exceeding their already high expectations.” Both Korey and Katelyn describe Sean Zeigler as a force to be reckoned with, mixing great love with a little fear – a strong leader who is harder on them because they are his children. Looking back on her ten-year tenure, Katelyn recalls, “One of his big leaps of faith was trusting me to transform the company from paper-based to electronic. I created the system in a week, taught the office personnel, and now we’re benefiting from a much more efficient operation.” Having grown up in the company and performed so many duties herself, Katelyn has literally written the employee handbook. “The job is all-consuming,” reports Katelyn. “It’s some late nights, limited vacation time and not a lot of social life.” But she adds that there are soft spots to her days. Occupying a miniature couch in her office is Zoe, her pet French Bulldog. “Dad has her daughter, Bella, in his office next door with an identical couch.” Katelyn also tapped into her artistic talents to design her newly built home in Southern Oaks that she calls her sanctuary. “I made a lot of revisions to the plans and picked out all the materials. The house is a reflection of my personality.” For now, Katelyn says her passion is perfecting the workings of the Zeigler Tree office to keep the company growing and to give back to the family that has done so much for her. But she also has sights on growing the family tree in the future. “In five years, I’d love to have a family and learn how to balance that with my career.” Zeigler Tree is located at 253 Highway 1085 in Madisonville. Tending the Family Tree WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
LIKE HIS SISTER Katelyn, this issue’s Enterprising Woman, Korey Zeigler’s life has been intertwined with trees for as long as he can remember also. Although a year and a half younger than his sibling, he still shares early memories of the huge, magical oak tree that served as the canopy of their playground at the family’s Folsom home. What was a trying financial time for his father, Sean, became the beginning of a great adventure for young Korey. “I was still in diapers when my dad began Zeigler Tree. When the crew would get to the house in the morning, they were larger than life beasts of men to me. After we moved to Abita when I was five or six, I’d watch them get in the equipment truck parked across the street, and I begged not to go to school. All I wanted to do was ride in that center seat.” Korey continues enthusiastically, “It’s a blessing now working with some of those same guys who are like family and being able to lead the team. They sometimes like to remind me that they remember my diaper days, but they are awesome father figures who’ve taken me under their wing and are now collaborative co-workers. At 15 or 16, my first vehicle was a pick-up that could pull the stump grinder. I was living the dream.” Also like his sister, Korey attended Southeastern while working full-time at the family business and became the second youngest licensed arborist in the state following Katelyn’s example. As Vice-President of the company at just 26, having grown up around the business for 20 years has given him lifelong exposure and experience resulting in a philosophy and vision rare in one so young. “We’re not just tree cutters. As an arborist, you learn to advocate for preservation. Taking measures to keep trees healthy like pruning or deep root stimulation is the first goal – you don’t want to just cut everything. When tree removal is necessary, we find the safest solution for everyone.” The company relies on decades of experience, careful planning and a focus on safety, says Korey, who serves as Director of Operations with daily duties including estimating and crew coordination. “This work is dangerous and can turn into a life-or-death situation. Each scenario is different, and we manage that with weekly safety meetings, a Hazard Analysis for each
job and gear that’s in tip top shape. We recently even took it up a notch by creating a dedicated Quality Control Team.” Korey says crew camaraderie is also important. “These guys have a passion for what they do. It’s hard work and an adrenaline rush on site. It takes more time and money to find the right way to approach each job, but we have to do it to keep safety the first priority.” Because the Zeiglers are so family-centric, Korey says that the lines between life and work are difficult to distinguish. “We all go camping and 4-wheeling together or go to the house for barbecues or crawfish, and the conversation always goes back to the growth of the company or what new equipment is out there.” Korey explains that investing in state-of-the-art equipment is important for many reasons. “We’re very mechanized. For example, having remote control robotic cranes means no more climbing trees. That increases our efficiency while allowing the guys to have a longer and safer career.” What little down time the energetic youth has is spent in the gym. Even the Zeigler pets are expected to do their part for the family cause. For Korey, his golden retriever, Kash, performs the job of loyal officemate and expert navigator, taking that center seat in the work truck that his human so enthusiastically filled when he was a boy. “It's so cool to have others just as invested in your work as you are,” says Korey. “My mom and sister have been great role models. Even though our responsibilities rarely overlap, you know they’re right there with you working for the same goals. And now, I get to brainstorm with my dad about the company’s future. He’s been building Zeigler’s great reputation for almost 30 years. It’s hard to maintain that, but he’s done it. He’s definitely in charge, inspiring a lot of love and a little fear. Now, it’s my job to not just keep the company on top, but to continue making it better and better. I know our dad is tougher on Katelyn and me than others because we’re family, but we have so much respect for him, that we’re dedicated to living up to that very high standard. I will not be the stereotypical second generation fail. It’s difficult and demanding, but so special to be able to do a great service for the community while providing rewarding careers for our work family. And so worth it to carry on the family legacy and to be part of something bigger than yourself with those closest to you.”

cocktail glasses clinking at sunset on your rooftop entertainment area — the highest point overlooking town — with a view of the Tchefuncte River rolling into Lake Pontchartrain as purple martins fly into the Madisonville marsh chasing their evening meal. Egrets wing back to their roost as dusk turns to dark and the night sky offers staggering stargazing from the hot tub or perfectly perched sitting areas. A variety of riverside options for tomorrow’s brunch are walking distance through the quaint town past the Maritime Museum, library, parks, tennis courts, shops and colorful cottages. Then, it’s back to the house for an afternoon boat ride from the backyard dock right through your private waterway down the river, into the lake and beyond. Because your new home is located south of the Madisonville bridge, your cruising time isn’t dependent on the bridge’s opening schedule. Relax. You’re free to set sail whenever you like. Sounds like a dream come-true? It was for owners Guy and Lisa Hebert who chose their exact location and meticulously designed and built the seaside villainspired sanctuary with the help of their good friend, Chicago architect Joe Credle in 2013. “It is like being on vacation all year long,” says Guy. “We scouted many locations, and there’s not a better place where you can live in a town – not a big city – with an outlet to a deep-water river at the convergence of the river, lake and the marsh. Further upriver, you’d have to deal with the bridge to go boating, and you wouldn’t get the lake breezes or the charm of Madisonville. Joe is as much artist as architect and took our vision of a modern Mediterranean feel with wide open spaces and crisp lines and made it beautiful. The views are the star here, so there are no window coverings or clutter – just clean, balanced design with understated columns and arches to frame the space.” Avid boaters, the Heberts recently returned from an 18-month voyage on the motor yacht they keep docked behind the house, and now as empty nesters, have decided to trade their nearly 5,000 square foot waterside residence for more extended voyages and land travel. “We’ve packed the ice chest here in Sophisticated Woman | August - September 2022

home feature the kitchen, walked right out back to the boat and gotten to Maine and beyond without setting foot on a road,” adds Guy. “It’s an adventure living here, and the views are just gorgeous. We designed the house to flow into nature and for nature to flow into the house, but being this close to the coast, we also built it to withstand the weather this location can bring.” Lisa explains the house was constructed with insulated concrete forms (ICF) that have been compared to Lego blocks that are reinforced with cement columns, steel rebar and concrete beams every four feet. ICF construction provides superior stability and temperature and sound insulation. “This house is like a concrete bunker built to withstand hurricanes. We feel confident and safe staying here in any weather. But most times, we’re able to enjoy the design elements that extend indoor spaces out and allow the outdoor surroundings in. You want to see this beautiful landscape so there are windows everywhere.” Guy points out that the same materials are used inside and out to provide a seamless flow between areas. The stone floors are polished and filled inside and left unpolished outdoors. The unique, bold granite used in the indoor and outdoor balcony kitchens provide consistent structural beauty. And to top it off, all the French doors going from the dining room to the front porch and from the den to the back balconies can be opened to create a huge, all-inclusive area for entertaining. Guy says that entertaining was a huge consideration while planning the design. “We started with the kitchen and worked out making sure that area felt connected to the den and had views of the water and palms. The appliances are all Thermador, and the sliding window over the sink connects to the full outdoor kitchen on the balcony, so you can pass food out and back to the barbecue or cooktop and to the outdoor dining table. The rooftop area is very special too. The view from that height is like no other in town, and we’ve got the works up there – a swim spa, hot tub, pergola and big seating and dining areas. The ICF construction easily accommodates all of that. We had a surprise Sophisticated Woman | August - September 2022

party for Lisa where we brought her in by boat and all the guests on the roof sang Happy Birthday as they were docking. We had a full band up there and fireworks over the water – it was spectacular!” The home’s five bedrooms lie on the story in between the main floor and the rooftop. The primary bedroom boasts a fireplace, balcony and oversized bath suite. One other bedroom also enjoys a balcony, and the remaining bedrooms can be converted to offices or multi-use rooms. Lisa says that their dreams really did come true for their family with the building of this house. “It became everything we wanted, from the perfect waterfront location to the friends we made in this special boating community. It’s private when you want it to be, but still convenient to everything. That made it perfect for our three kids to enjoy the house and the water, and still be close to school and their friends. This house is an amazing part of our lives and our children’s upbringing, and we know it will provide great adventures for the next family to enjoy.” Sophisticated Woman | August - September 2022

TWO ENTREPRENEURIAL FAMILIES are helping “corner” the market for fun in Olde Towne Slidell. For Gil and Sonia Valencia, it began when they opened Tacos & Beer on the northwest corner of Cousin and First Streets in 2009. Born in California, The Valencias moved to Slidell in 2006. “We decided California wasn’t the place to raise a family, so we moved here where relatives owned Mexican restaurants. I could see how much opportunity Olde Towne offered and knew it was the place to start building our future.” A few years later, Gil met caterer Patrick Heim through their sons’ football team. The two bonded over family values and a shared vision of further Olde Towne development. With a passion for all things food and drink, Patrick envisioned partnering with Gil to revitalize the property across First Street from Tacos & Beer. “We knew a craft beer driven theme would be perfect for this spot. When we took over The Brass Monkey in 2016, we offered 36 draught beers along with live music. We created the quintessential, neighborhood corner bar and hit a homerun.” East St. Tammany embraced both of the reimagined venues, repeatedly voting Tacos & Beer and The Brass Monkey as The Northshore’s Best. In 2018, Gil continued developing the area around those two initial establishments when the property a block down Cousin on the Carey Street corner became available. Gil says he resurrected the fire-damaged space into 80s-themed nightclub Electric Avenue, featuring DJ dance music, arcade games and karaoke, adding to the district’s entertainment options. “Olde Towne spans from Robert to Fremeaux and Second to Front Streets. There are restaurants, shops, professional offices and services like salons and fitness studios, a screen printer, pet services, attorneys, realtors – so many offerings. And many are Northshore’s Best winners. That growth and quality is fueling Olde Towne’s momentum. Slidell is the Northshore’s biggest city and deserves this area where residents proudly enjoy living, working and playing.” The fun-loving visionaries agree that working with their fellow businesses and the city are part of their formula for success. With Patrick as President of the Olde Towne Merchant’s Association, and Gil, Sonia and Patrick’s wife, Erika, 34 Sophisticated Woman | August - September 2022
also in leadership positions, one focus is creating events that engage their community and bring increasing visitors. Patrick adds, “Last year we organized the first Mardi Gras Day parade here with a family-focused, kids wagon parade. We thought we’d get maybe 30 participants, but 150 kids signed up. After, we had a street party with live music and vendors. Other events include Fourth of July fireworks, a White Linen art walk, and a crawfish cookoff. Our biggest event so far, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a huge draw and considered a top St. Pat’s event in Louisiana.” Born in the Empire State, Patrick says he’s long dreamed of replicating New York-style pizza here. In mid-2019, he and Gil realized that dream when the property across from The Brass Monkey became available. Patrick says, “I love corner businesses, and nothing screams ‘family’ like a pizza place. Tweaking the recipe to compensate for the humidity here and having to take out a door to move in that huge brick oven were challenges, but we overcame the obstacles to make it authentic and delicious. When the fourth corner of Cousin and First came available, Gil jumped on that. He took over and freshened up The Soda Shop - which was an institution here - and added miniature golf for the kids.” Following suit of their other endeavors, both the pizza and soda shops’ quality and family-friendly vibe have earned them The Northshore’s Best title. The latest addition to the pair’s entrepreneurial adventures is Whiskey and Ashe, an upscale cigar bar offering gourmet spirits and smokes. While not on a corner, it is conveniently located right next to Olde Towne Pizza Company and offers accoutrements including member lockers and a comfy back patio. With no plans to slow down, their next project is slated to be a live music venue. Whatever the theme, Patrick reiterates Gil’s and his philosophy. “We still have much to do, but we’re working hard on making this community thrive. We want to get the word out about how much this area offers and the importance of working, playing and shopping local so we can keep building on the momentum we’ve created.”

In addition to Physical Therapy, there are several things that can help to relieve arthritis pain to help you live life to the fullest. 1. Education and Self-management: Gaining more knowledge on activities that you can do safely can help you move more, reducing your pain from arthritis. 2. Weight Loss: Maintaining your weight at a healthy level can reduce your pain by decreasing the wear and tear on weight bearing joints like your hips, knees, and back. 3. Footwear and Insoles: Special inserts can improve the alignment of your body and reduce the stress placed on your joints. 4. Knee braces: These can help to improve stability, and keep the knee in a healthy alignment, reducing pain and breakdown of the joint.
WEDDINGS · FESTIVALS · CLUBS · PARTIES
5. Heat and Cold: Many people find that the warmth of a hot bath, or heat pack eases their arthritis pain. Others find relief with cold packs. For long term management of arthritis, find which works best for you. 6. Exercise: Exercise is proven to help reduce pain, while improving strength and function. Knowing the right exercises to do, or not do, is key. Receiving a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation is important to find which exercises will work best for you. 7. Stretching and Massage: Keeping your muscles loose and limber helps to reduce the compression placed on your joints, reduces your inflammation, and decreases your pain.

Grow Extraordinary Orchids WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER
Intimidated by growing orchids? If you can grow a flowering plant indoors, you can grow an orchid! The most common orchid grown indoors are tropical epiphytes. Typically grown on tree surfaces, like mosses and lichens, orchids have minimal water and growing medium requirements. Spectacular blooms can last several months. Follow a few basics: CONTAINER - Choose a small pot of any material, allowing a space of one half to three-quarters of an inch for roots to grow. Slits or holes provide ample air and humidity ventilation around roots. POTTING - Select a combination of expanded clay, bark and peat moss, available at garden centers. Repot once a year after flowering to ensure fresh material, keeping the crown above the medium. LIGHT - Place within a few feet of a south or west window. A sheer curtain protects against direct sun or choose an east facing window. A north facing window does not offer sufficient light needs despite our extra hours of daylight. HUMIDITY - Indoor heating and cooling systems are designed to remove moisture as a process. Carpeting and other fabrics also absorb moisture. Counter these effects by grouping orchids with other plants to exchange transpiration (exhaled moisture). WATER - Mist every other day depending on the growing medium, avoiding leaves, blooms and crown. Placing potted plants on gravel-filled trays holds excess moisture and raises the humidity level about fifty percent. Ensure water is below the pebble surface to prevent root rot. TEMPERATURE - Orchids tolerate a range of temperatures. Minimum winter nighttime temperatures of 55-60 degrees F and summer temperatures around 75 degrees F during the day is sufficient. Orchids amaze with their stunning petal colors and shapes. Remember to keep leaves dust-free and tidy by gently wiping with a damp paper towel. Drench once a month with a kitchen sprayer or shower allowing water to completely drain before returning to pebble filled trays. Visit the American Orchid Society for culture sheets. Happy Growing! Dr. Tod Aust: Hope for the Hopeless DR. TOD AUST is an interventional pain management physician with a passion for what others describe as hopeless causes. “Because I can take more time with patients than is the norm in many volumebased practices, I’m referred complex injury cases, long-term chronic pain cases with overlapping issues, and cases that have repeatedly eluded effective treatment – the worst of the worst.” Aust advocates ‘Pain Relief without Pain Pills’ saying, “It’s of utmost importance to educate patients that pills aren’t the answer. Opioids can’t heal an injury or cure arthritis, and any initial relief is often short-lived when their tolerance builds up. My job is to listen and ensure them that this is a long-term partnership where if they won’t quit, I won’t quit. The physical exam and patient interaction are key - not just looking at an MRI.” Aust says that difficult cases often involve several pathologic processes causing overlapping pain in one area. This is challenging because treatment of one problem does not relieve the pain from the others, so the pain remains if only one source of overlapping pain is treated. A plan must be made for each problem, and the patient must understand the processes causing overlapping pain. “By partnering with patients in their care rather than dictating treatment based on imaging alone, 95% of our patients achieve improvement. I’m proud of our dedicated team and the compassion they extend to patients who are desperate for relief, and we are honored to contribute to research making real advancements in the field.
