“…I've compiled free articles that Robert Plank is giving away through his site or from article directories. Long on content, short on sales, but he is hoping that you like his free stuff enough to someday buy something he's selling, of course, and if you do, I might or might not get a commission out of the deal. Regardless, you can learn a lot from reading the following articles, just like I do…”

How to Use Fewer Words in Sales Copy Any copywriter in the world will tell you that, online or offline, you need to sell in as few words as possible. People have low attention spans, you might easily say the wrong thing, and as a copywriter you just don't want to spend more time in marketing than you have to. You can always read through your entire sales letter and cross out unneeded words as you go, but how do you write as few words as possible the very first time? I have a few techniques. To reduce your words, you need to understand that you don't always need to write your sales letter on paper or in a Word document. Just because the finished product of a sales letter looks like that, does not mean the draft does! Sometimes, instead of writing the sales copy on a page, I will create PowerPoint slides. This makes my brain think I am going to actually use this for a live presentation and ensures that I use as few words as possible. Are you one of those people who likes to dump whole paragraphs into PowerPoint slides? Here is a solution: Withdraw a bunch of money from your bank's ATM machine. Find the PowerPoint slide in your presentation with the most words, and put $5 in a cookie jar for every word on that slide. You are not allowed to touch that money until your product is launched and selling. Now do you want to reduce the number of words? A slide with 50 words would cost you $250. Something else that helps with concise bullets and headline creation is Twitter. Twitter is a microblogging service that only allows you to send message and make posts that are 170 characters in length. When you use a restrictive service like that, you have to edit and edit to give your words maximum impact. To use fewer words in sales copy, you do not have to write words out on a page. You can write in bullet points, PowerPoint slides, or Twitter posts to get as few words written as possible with the best message in your copywriting. Remove Problem Words in Sales Copy As a copywriter, you want to make sure that your words pack the most punch. You are not writing articles, so your words actually count and they have a purpose, to get a prospect to order from you. If you are anything like me then you probably wrote your entire sales letter in one sitting, and it is not always perfect. But there are a few things you can do to quickly improve bad copy. The quick fix solution for me is usually to remove the repeat words. Words such as "the", "however", "probably", and "might" do not need to be there and can go. I am sure you can find lots of other words you use all too often so you will have to read through your copy and find those repeat words that tire and distract readers. Once you have that quick fix out of the way, you can start to apply a few writing techniques. First of all, never have more than a half-page of nothing but text. Add graphics, scruffies, headlines, bullet points, screenshots, testimonials... anything to break up the monotony. If you have a long sales letter, make sure you place an order button on every page. This has two benefits: first, it makes it easier for people to buy. Second, if you add tracking codes or custom fields to those buttons, you can find out what part of your sales letter makes people buy! You can also remove passive sentences. A passive sentence is a sentence that says, "The cake was eaten by me" whereas an active sentence says, "I ate cake." See the difference? Active sentences are shorter, clearer, and action-oriented. You can find active sentences either by hand or you can set your spell-check options in Microsoft Word to check for grammar and style (not just grammar) and make sure the "passive sentences" button is checked. If all else fails, rate every element of your copy one to ten. Rate each headline 1 to 10, each bullet point 1 to 10, and each sentence 1 to 10. Did you rate anything below a 5? Better rewrite it until the average score on that sales letter is at a level you are happy with. Editing copy is easy as long as you are the one who wrote it, and you can apply simple copywriting strategies: remove repeat words, avoid more than half a page of text, remove passive sentences, and rate the elements of your sales copy.

Copywriting Tips - How Important Are Graphics to Sales Copy? Years ago, I used to think that fancy graphics and headers were all you needed to sell a product online. After all, when you go to the store, that's usually all you see in front of you... whether it's cereal boxes or software boxes. But then one internet marketer showed me the truth... he displayed two sales letters side by side. One contained sales text and no graphics, the other contains graphics and no sales text. Which one do you think sold? Do not misunderstand me, graphics on sales letters are important for three simple reasons. The first one is branding. Most marketers will tell you that unless you are Coca-Cola, branding is useless. That is basically true, you cannot expect your name or your product's name to become recognized by every household. However, you need to realize that graphics instantly show people what you are selling. If you want to be branded as "the AdSense guy" or "the copywriting guy" flashy graphics that show people exactly what you are selling, is a great way to do that. The most important type of graphic you can have on your sales copy, in my opinion, is your own photograph! You do not have to be a model, and I do not care if you have "a face made for radio" ... if you have a picture on MySpace or Facebook, it is good enough to show on your sales letter. The picture does not necessarily have to be professionally-taken or corporate looking, any headshot of yourself will do fine. People feel better when they are buying from a real human being. Your photo will also make you instantly recognizable when you attend offline events in your niche. No matter what kinds of graphics you use on your site, do not forget "the fold." The fold is that part of your web pages that visitors can see before they scroll. If you have huge header graphics that take up a large portion of the fold, readers will have less of a chance to get hooked, and it will kill your conversions. For that reason, I prefer to use header graphics that are 100 pixels high or smaller, or I avoid headers entirely. If you must use header graphics in your sales copy, try to work an attention-grabbed headline into the header so that your graphics help, instead of hinder.

Copywriting Tips - Add a "PS" Statement For Maximum Conversion Rates You have a sales letter. You have grabbed their attention with a headline, given them detailedoriented benefits using bullet points, explained your story to them, dazzled them with testimonials and other forms of proof, even delivered a great call-to-action to get them to buy. But did you forget the all-powerful P.S. statement to catch those otherwise lost sales? All you need to know about the P.S. statement at the end of your sales letter are these three words: benefit, urgency, and action. The easiest way to apply all three is to say, "P.S."... then list the biggest takeaway benefit from the entire sales letter, in case they skipped over it. Then say, "P.P.S." ... and list the urgency factor involved. Will the price increase in 7 more days? Are you only selling 10 slots to your e-class? Maybe you just need to warn potential customers that their competition will get their hands on your strategies sooner or later, and run you out of business... unless you get your hands on it first. After all that, remind them that they need to take action now and order your product, not to delay, or else something bad will happen... next week will have the same results as this week and they will not make any progress. You would be surprised how much you can improve your conversion rate simply by adding a "P.S." statement to your sales letter. It only takes three minutes and three sentences, but they might be the most important three sentences you ever added to your web page. Use a P.S. statement whenever possible to increase conversions in your copywriting.
