Project 1 was an introductory project which required us to explore issues of spatial typologies namely, linear and concentric spaces, as well as the poetics through two design exercises. This project was a group project. In a group of 5, we managed to understand, analyze and evaluate the different issues through our exploration.

project 1a precedents studies This project required us to analyze 2 precedents studies where one precedent should be of pre-modern movement and the other of contemporary. Our analysis included the study of their spatial typologies and their spatial poetics. This stated them being either linear and concentric, explanation our understanding on the spaces and order as well as how these spatial typologies control the design. On top of that, the spatial poetics comprised the considerations of the design being such that the flow of the space, the experiences it formulated through the manipulation of light, play of materials and how the human senses were engaged with the spaces. We had to record our analysis through diagrammings on A3 butter papers and presented our them through a verbal presentation.

pre-modern movement: the colosseum

The colosseum, built during 80 A.D, was chosen for my group’s concentric precedence study. I came to understand the design considerations the architect deliberated on. I also understood the characteristics of this spatial typology through the exploration and study of this structure.

For my group’s linear precedence study, we picked the Hoki Museum in Japan, which was built in 2010 for Mr. Hoki’s realistic art collection. This building study really established the characteristics through the spatial poetics that the architect regarded. This study helped my gain the knowledge of how linear spaces work and the draw and order it yields.

On Joy and Sorrow Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven? ... Some of you say, “Joy is greater thar sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Feel how the structure freeze and can’t breathe understanding how joy and sorrow are inseparable, they can only be experienced by experiencing either one firt to appreciate the other one. The experience within the space is a harmonious guide from one feeling to the next to stimulate the appreciation of oneself such as once darkened, one can only appreciate light. Feel your journey not only is the journey a gradient throughout but by feeling the wall texture, there is a gradient. This not only help in guiding the users in the dark but also gives a sense of wonderment, encouraging the the experience after feeling one thing, you will eventually feel the opposite at the end of the road.

Towards the light from the start, the users’ only guide throughout the journey is by the light. The light at the end of the walkway is to show that even when you are in your dull or dark days, there is still hope at the end.

This linear walkway emphasizes the first few stanzas of the poem where the poet explains that joy can only be Light Accepting light is one thing. Appreciating light is another. It starts by journeying downwards into the dark basement where the users will feel the need to touch the walls for guidance. This is to potray the sorrow where it suffers the users to only gain their freedom or ‘joy’ after their ‘sorrow’ experience. This walk is a two-way entry where the users can understand that to feel one thing, you need to understand the other first.

2 project 1b journey of the five senses

In this project we were required to design a walk and a structure based on a given poem. By analyzing the poem, we needed to translate its characteristics and design a linear walk and a concentric spatial structure. On top of this, the story of our design not only have its spatial poetics according the poem but it also should be inform by our precedence studies.

“Society, culture, history, memory and the landscape of a particular place echoes the meaning of that ‘place’, or its ‘genius loci’. These qualities will inform the architectural concept and generators for Project 2.” After understanding the poetics of spaces, we further regard a design by learning about the genius loci. This project was to learn about the architectural response towards the sense of place and the sense of space.

the Penang

War Museum

site analysis: discovering the site and its genius loci In a group of 9, we were required to do a site analysis at the Penang War Museum in Penang for 3 days. This included morning and night tours as well as researches regarding the historical facts about the site. We were then required to prepare and present our analysis through a verbal presentation. This project was required as it was a fundamental need for a design project. To place a meaning towards a site, the site needed to be understood in both intuitive and personal ways, as well as quantitative and measured means. This meaning must be understood as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solutions as well as understanding the spirit of the place. I was elected as the group leader and my role was to supervise, interview, research as well as prepare all the necessities of the presentation boards as well as the presentation boards. syaza yunos july 2013

In project 1, we were required to introduce and explore the formal and poetic articulation of architecture in a site-less condition. In project 2, we were called for an architectural response to design a visitor’s interpretive centre where we need to emphasize the engagement and the relationship between our design with our site with our spatial experiences and the programmatic requirements as well as our personal understanding of our site’s genius loci.

This project enabled me to identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience through case studies as well as an introduction of a design project. It also gave me the ability to create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space and design through conscious considerations.

This project on the other hand gave me the ability to generate designs based on unique character and conditions of the site context and incorporate my knowledge acquired from the first project. On top of this, it also gave me the opportunity to lead a group of super good studio mates and further understand my abilities to deal with people. Moreover, this project focused on my capability to produce drawings 2D as well as 3D, model making as well as my verbal presentation and communication skills.
