standard information on subject understanding the characteristics and the patterns of urbanism, urban infill and marketplace

This studio project focused on urban studies and how to retrofit a market place in an urban infill. The design basically focused on verticality and spatial layout that could be workable in the current situation. It also gave a good exposure to urban context in different areas and the ability to design in such context. Urban studies helped in the understanding on how design evolves through time, people and culture. It became more on the practicality towards human circulation and needs. It helped in the understanding of issues and the solutions to be made to fit the constrictions. This studio also regarded the UBBL, the architecture law system of Malaysia and how to compromise our design so that it could fit almost perfectly with the site’s urban site.

part1: site analysis This semester’s studio had two separate sites along the Jalan Tun HS Lee, which was randomly assigned to each subgroup by the tutor. Thus, each tutorial group had two subgroups for the two different sites; site A and site B. Site A was located at the one end of the Jalan Tun HS Lee whereas Site B was located around the area of the Maybank. Site A was assigned to my subgroup and I was assigned to be the subgroup leader as well as the tutorial representative. This part 1 consisted of three components; site analysis, precedence studies and documentation + presentation. The site analysis required us to physically experience through our site, interview as well as mark down the 5 Kevin Lynch elements of an urban study. We had to come about the definition of an urban site to fully understand how to do an urban infill that compliments the urban site. The precedence studies that we used was the Barceloneta Market in Barcelona, Spain by Josep Mias Architects and the Kolstrand Building in Ballard, Seattle by Graham Architects. The precedence studies were to help us understand the definition and characteristics of a marketplace in an urban site, moreover, an urban infill.

kuala lumpur purgrows rapidly from tin mining. first shop houses built in utilitarian architecture. neo-classical architecture and art-deco. high street was regarded as one of the busiest streets of kuala lumpur during its time. it was later changed to jalan bandar. mrt stations at the corner end of the road started its construction. jalan bandar changed its name to jalan tun h.s. lee after the death of tun h.s. lee, the successfull busines who was rather active in governmental events during his time.

part2: urban infill + market place Jalan Tun HS Lee as may serve as a prominent route as a tourist attraction. Since the Masjid Jamek LRT is located at the “centre”, the users strategically uses the street towards the Central Market, which markets the traditional and many cultural art of Malaysia. This makes the markets/shops along the street very much alive. To accommodate the whole street to be ‘alive’ in trading “local” products, SITE A serves one of the prominent node of the street such that it may be the starting point of axis. Having the Central Market at the other end, I have decided to design an ART + Book market to showcase and sell the current local art that is blooming in Malaysia. Since the local art culture has now evolved where local artists further develop their talents through paintings, graffiti, crafting, architecture, literature and design, they can also share their talents by teaching and events that can be handled in my building. These local artists may include Seni Bikin (furniture & craft design), Buki Fixi (literature), Fahmi Reza (painting & graphic design) and Nala (art and design), where they use art as their means of communication. My building is designed to accommodate these local artists for them to communicate their art to the people, both local and tourists.

precedence // louis barragan Louis Barragan helped me understand how to play with colours during my design progress where I learnt that colours could be one prominent factor to attract people and to define the different spaces of a building. His works, to me, were as communicative as it could where I understood that that is the most important factor to have within an urban marketplace where each market needs to be defined even in a ‘chaos’. Such was how I got my sub-concept of an organized chaos.
