ART & BOOK MARKET H.S. LEE For my urban infill study during degree, I decided to focus on the local art scene. Since the local art culture has now evolved, where the local artists further develop their talents through paintings, graffiti, crafting, sculpture, literature and design, they can also share their talents by teaching and events that can be handled in my building. The design was aimed to accommodate the local artists for them to communicate their art to the public, both local and tourists.

THE RIG MARITIME CENTRE PORT KLANG The aim of my programme was to gather the community of the area, and rejuvenate and signify the local maritime culture through the art of boat-making. My study programme was to surround the main boat-making programme with the culture so that people, especially young locals, can actually learn how to build boats traditionally and understand the art of boat-making while temporarily live in the local culture of fish markets. This final studio project was aimed to study the limitations of design, methods of construction and community study. We were given the freedom to design our own programme and how a programme work.

THE ELPIS FACTORY CHICAGO This porject was designed for a competition called Tiny Homes by AIA Chicago. Its main brief is to design a shelter for the homeless in a specific age range to help them pursue their lives. In a team of 5, we designed The Elpis Factory, which is defined as The Box of Hope. The aim of our project was to create boxes of hope and a community that can pursue their dreams and have a place to bloom their personas and creative ideas that can turn into basically, jobs to sustain their lives. We believed that with the age range of 1824, they are to be groomed individually and also morally within a community. Better enough, this shelter is aimed to motivate them to do so. The basic concept of our design is to create the feeling of ‘opportunity’. Each unit of ours is designed to look as individualistic in a way to show that each user is individual yet united under one roof. This collection of units is also ‘hung’ from agove to showcase the idea that these individuals with their dreams can work out as high as possible and it creates an active atmosphere.

BURNHAM PAVILLION CHICAGO The Burnham Pavillion was created for the centennial celebration of Daniel Burnham, the main figure in the creation of the master plan of the city of Chicago. Designed by Zaha Hadid, the pavilion was superimposed with hidden traces of Burnham’s organizational systems - an elegant organic structure made of fabric tensile stretched across aluminum frames. My project was a study on fabric as a structural material and its limitations. Drawings on model ideas and model making were experimented during the process. The fabric membrane slides into the aluminum supporting structures and the force is directly distributed and stretched across. The tension that the fabric is under supports the entire structure. The advantage of using fabric is that it is a very flexible material and it takes on any shape it is stretched across. It is also a light material and gives off the building some illuminated appearance during nighttime.
