PROJECT TWO

PHENOM ENOLOGY In this project we were given the list of subtopics with a text by the architect/writer of the era. We were required to understand and give a comparative study about our chosen topic, the definition defined by the architect/writer and a comparative study between two example buildings, on local and one ‘foreign’. The topic that I chose was Phenomenology, the understanding of feelings and emotions in architecture through the manipulation of design details, materials and colour patterns.

JUHANI PALLASMAA Juhani Pallasmaa’s insights on architecture reflects upon his social intimacy. His view in architecture is how strong architecture can impact a person and for him, architecture should create experiences not spaces.

The two buildings used different templates and materials to emphasise their purposes of built and after analysing the two buildings, it covered the text by Juhani Pallasmaa. This showed that the theory by him fitted the buildings, although not fully, but mostly throughout.

PROJECT THREE

MASJID J A M E K In this project, we were given the opportunity to experience the Kevin Lynch theory of Urbanism by using our own chosen sites as basis of his theory study. We were required to basically draw out and explain our understanding of his five scopes of urban area and show it in our site study. The site that I chose was based in Masjid Jamek. The surroundings of it were taken into account.

F I N A L OUTCOME the five elements of the city:

According to Kevin Lynch, the author of the image of a city, “A good environmental image gives its possessor an important sense of emotional security. He can establish

cars LRT line bus route

My site, the Masjid Jamek area, is situated in the heart of KL. It is one of the country’s tourist attraction and its main purpose is commercial.

Paths, according to Kevin Lynch is the channels of movement. This site was analysed as the circulation of the transportation of the area.

Masjid Jamek itself was the oldest mosque situated in KL but throughout the years of its existence, 1909 till today, small trading business started to grow upon it and eventually became one of the major tourist visited spots of KL.

Vehicles such as cars and motorcylces comes in and out of this area throughout the days and nights. The congestion varies between timings and days such that the most congestion happens during timings 10am-11pm as well as during weekends and public holidays.

Fun facts: 1) It was built on the first malay burial in KL and 2) Its roof can withstand 200 ft of snow since it was built according to British technology and knowledge

main expressways river

The edges was analysed as the barriers, outlines and boundaries of the site. This outcome, as shown in the above diagram are the main expressways as well as the Klang river.

trading district educational district office district

Districts as according to the author is the medium-to-large portions of the city the the observer mentally enters “inside of”. This was analysed by three different districts around the area, trading, educational as well as office. The main focused area, the Masjid Jamek area is seen to be as the main trading district surrounding offices as well as schools and universities.

transportation hubs intersections

Nodes are the intersections and main strategic spots points of the area. There are two types of main strategic spots, first type of node is the strategic spot for padestrians, transportation hubs such as LRT station and bus stations, and the second as the most strategic points for transportation.

1. Masjid Jamek

2. Masjid Jamek LRT station

3. Masjid India

4. Menara City One

Since this area is one of the main tourist attraction in KL, it has quite a number of landmarks. These landmarks varies from high rises, attraction spots such as mosques and museums and malls.

The final outcome resulted as an A2 board of our study and analysis.
