NON-FICTION

FICTION

Michelle Obama, Becoming (Penguin, £25.00) A memoir of her youth and life before the White House (“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves”) and of her time as First Lady.

William Boyd, Love is Blind (Penguin, £18.99) Set in the late 19th Century: a young Scottish piano tuner goes to Paris, then St. Petersburg, as he follows his tortuous love affair with a beautiful Russian soprano.

Edythe Haber, Teffi: A Life of Letters and of Laughter (I.B.Tauris & Co., £20.00) First biography of the Russian writer only recently rediscovered by an Anglophone readership thanks to Pushkin Press’s translations of her short stories and her remarkable memoir of her journey into exile in 1918, ‘Memories: From Moscow to the Black Sea’. Witty, dauntless, and rather left field all her life, she visited Tolstoy as a 13 year old in an attempt to persuade him to alter the ending of ‘War and Peace’. The title suggests all was sweetness and light, but there was of course much pain and sadness too.

Charles Frazier, Varina, Hodder & Stoughton, £20.00) A fine new novel about the American Civil War, from the author of 'Cold Mountain'.

Matthew Sturgis, Oscar: A Life (Head of Zeus, £25.00) Strugis' previous books (‘Passionate Attitudes: The English Decadents of the 1890s’, ‘Aubrey Beardsley: A Biography’ and ‘Walter Sickert: A Life’) have been exemplary in their humanity and wit: there are few biographers more suited to tackle Wilde. Peter Frankopan, The New Silk Roads: The Present and Future of the World (Bloomsbury, £14.99) Originally planned as an afterword to his 2015 book, it turned out that there was so much to say in bringing the story up to date that Bloomsbury decided to publish it as a separate book.

Robert Galbraith, Lethal White (Little, Brown Book Group, £20.00) This is J. K. Rowling’s 4th outing for her detective Cormoran Strike. And very good the series is too. Javier Marias, Berta Isla (Penguin, £18.99) The Madrid maestro’s latest novel is about spies and love, secrets and lies, and a relationship caught in the middle. What do we ever really know about a person? Sally Rooney, Normal People (Faber & Faber, £14.99) Much anticipated from the author of 'Conversations with Friends'. A class-complicated love story set at Trinity College Dublin. Haruki Murakami, Killing Commendatore (Vintage, £20.00) A huge new novel that begins with a portrait painter, abandoned by his wife, who finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist. Some readers may sympathise very readily with his wife.

Born Free

6

OUR GM ANDREW CONEY MEETS WILL TRAVERS, ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF BORN FREE, AN ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO KEEPING THE “WILD” IN WILDLIFE.

Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna

lsa Conservation Trust Joy Adamson and Elsa

7

INTERVIEW

So, Born Free has been championing wildlife for 35 years, how did it all begin? Well, it began when my mum and dad, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, were invited to play the parts of Joy and George Adamson in the film 'Born Free', which is a movie based on the true story of the lioness Elsa, who was successfully returned to the world by Joy and George. During that time they embarked on a love affair with wildlife, building up a profound level of trust with the various lions playing Elsa in the film by walking and interacting with them and getting to know them as individuals. In turn, the lions got to know them as humans and from there the love story began.

8

It evolved into a challenge with the keeping of animals in captivity and particularly zoos. How did that come about? George and Joy Adamson couldn’t accept that Elsa would be sent back to a zoo and fought to give her the opportunity of free life. This led to my mum and dad making another film, this time the story was about a couple house-sitting for a friend in Kenya. The film was called 'Elephant Go Slowly' about the house which was also the territory of some elephants. The smallest elephant, Pole Pole, who was involved in the film had been caught by the Kenyan Government and was due to be sent to London Zoo as a gift. To cut a long story short 10 years later, we were told Pole Pole had become difficult to manage. In the end she only left the elephant house when she was dead. We received thousands of letters about Pole Pole’s captivity and thought, why not set-up an organisation? Today, thanks to the evolution of technology, zoos are in question. I think zoos are on notice.

9

You used the word 'evolution' in terms of how much communication has progressed. How has your role evolved over the years? Well it’s evolved in one very profound way and that is because the opposite of saying no to zoos is our slogan ‘keep wildlife in the wild’. We want to keep wildlife in its natural habitat to make sure ecosystems work and that species can go about their role within those ecosystems. So, what was originally called 'Zoo Check' and entirely focused on the zoo issue, evolved into The Born Free Foundation. We now work on the zoo side – we look at captivity whether that’s zoos, circuses or trade of exotic animals as pets, and we support activities that keep wildlife in their natural habitats. We also support communities that live alongside wildlife so that they too can see there is benefit in keeping wildlife in the wild. I found that very compelling. I went to Shamwari [Game Reserve] and aside from the project of preservation and protection, there was a whole educational programme in the local vicinity not only for children, but also for adults, and this is not only providing employment but also some sort of future. Shamwari is a good example, attracting thousands of high spending visitors from around the world. They have a fantastic time and they provide hundreds of jobs in the Eastern Cape. Some of the towns near Shamwari are really poor and are not blessed with a lot of opportunities, so we also help to bring children and adults to education centres to teach them about our work. With the 3 or 4 acre we can provide, we can show that animals we’ve rescued cannot go back to the wild and that we can give them a sense of freedom. The animals can be as far away from people as they want, if you don’t see the animals, you don’t see them. We are not there to provide a show, but to tell stories. For example, the lion that came from Liberia that was President Taylor’s private lion, or the lions that came from Romania and the leopards that were abandoned in Sudan to teach individuals about the profound messages of Born Free.

INTERVIEW

10

You talked a little bit about education there. There is a huge amount of momentum around extinction. Do you sense that we care more today? That is a really interesting question because I actually think that as people we do, but as institutions we don’t. You can pick almost any government in the world and look at the extent of their commitment to the natural environment, to species conservation, to resource management, to sustainability and to climate change and it’s very patchy. I think people are personally very motivated, and we certainly find that, but it’s the people of power, the leaders, and the institutions that need to address this because they have access to the resources. There is huge awareness around this plastics issue right now. Do you see that as a distraction or a really compelling story? It’s fascinating, isn’t it? When something comes along that captures the public's imagination the way plastics have. David Attenborough lit the spark for this in Blue Planet; He told it like it was and the reaction from the Government and public has been amazing. One of our patrons, the author Lauren St.John, rallied around 50 children’s authors and put together a campaign called ‘Authors 4 Oceans’ which is all about protecting oceans and supporting the plastics issue. The campaign has just taken a life of its own and it shows how much people care. I’ve talked in the past about something I call ‘The Berlin Wall’ effect. There are things in our lives that we think will never change. Plastics are never going to change, climate change is never going to change, but we thought that about the Berlin Wall.

INTERVIEW

"WE WANT TO KEEP WILDLIFE IN ITS NATURAL HABITAT TO MAKE SURE ECOSYSTEMS WORK AND THAT SPECIES CAN GO ABOUT THEIR ROLE WITHIN THOSE ECOSYSTEMS".

11

INTERVIEW

Bill Travers

12

What species are you most concerned for right now? I’m concerned for all, but inevitably there are those that are fixed on the radar and those that fly under it. For years lions have flown under the radar, we’ve talked about tigers being threatened and giant pandas, but what about lions? In my lifetime there has been an 80% decline in lions in Africa, since Born Free started there has been a reduction from 100,000 to 2,000 lions. These species, to survive in the wild, need space, prey, food, water and so our approach is to take these species and try to protect their habitat in order to protect them in the world. And over the years, your proudest moments? One of them would be contributing significantly to the end of keeping dolphins in captivity in the UK. We took two of the last dolphins out of the UK in 1991 and released them into the wild. There have now not been any dolphins in captivity in the UK for 20 years. Persuading The Commissioner for the Environment in the European Commission, way back in 1994, to sign the zoo Licencing Act is a great achievement. This ensured that all zoos must be licenced and sort of allows us to hold the 3,500 zoos to account in Europe. Our constant fight is the protection of elephants and bearing down on the ivory trade. In the UK the Government now has the draft legislation that would close down our domestic ivory market pretty much entirely (with a few very small exceptions). This would send a clear message to our friends in Europe to support our friends in Africa. But, really it’s about looking at the next challenge and making sure we commit ourselves to that.

Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna

INTERVIEW

13

That being the case, how can anyone reading this interview help? Having partnerships and support from people and organisations just like The Hari allows us to reach a much wider audience. We notice a lot of the time that people want to leave a legacy, whether that’s supporting a new ward on a hospital or cancer research or helping old people and children. But there is also wildlife and our natural world to think about. One of the ways we can bypass governments is to do it ourselves, even if that means (as some people I know have done) buying 2 million acres of land in Patagonia that the Government has now adopted as a national park. It took private individuals to get to the point where the Government listened and said you know what, you’re right. That’s absolutely brilliant. I was talking to a guest a few weeks ago, and I was mentioning the relationship with Born Free. He said, “I’m very committed, I have a young daughter and I want her to see rhino, apes and lions. But more importantly I want her grandchildren to see them”. That’s the sort of language that President Obama and Prince William use when talking to with the youth of today. Trying to imagine Africa without lions or elephants, or India without tigers; It’s not just the physical loss, it’s the psychological damage that it does to us as a species. We are all poorer for it, and the sad thing is, we might not realise it until it’s too late.

Natasha and Lavinia of Beulah boutique ENCOUNTER

BEULAH A LUXURY WOMENSWEAR BRAND WITH A SOCIAL CONSCIENCE: THIS IS BEULAH IN A FEW WORDS. WE TALK ABOUT ITS STORY AND ITS PHILOSOPHY WITH NATASHA AND LAVINIA, THE COFOUNDERS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL PROJECT.

Tell us about when you started your business. We set up the brand in 2010 after spending two months working in Delhi with women who had been trafficked, we taught them basic skills in how to make an income. What was the motivation behind its creation? We saw such power in creating employment opportunities that we decided to set up a brand, which could empower women through the provision of employment and strengthen ancient craft techniques in order to help break the cycle of poverty, without compromising on the quality or design of our products. Why did you choose Belgravia? We opened a pop-up store a few years back in the neighbourhood

and fell in love with it. We built a very loyal (and local) customer base who came to us for those special occasions, but also many of them buy into our bespoke service, creating one-off unique pieces to wear. Tell us about any charity associations you have as a company. The Beulah Trust was set up alongside the business - we invest 10% of profits into the lives of the most marginalised women in the communities where we work, utilising the platform and community of our brand to shine a light on modern day slavery. Preventing: investing in projects that protect women and children vulnerable to trafficking; Nurturing: creating opportunities for women to rehabilitate through skills development and employment and Inspire: building a community united in its mission to empower women and eradicate modern day slavery. As a female leader, how do you feel about your role in business? It’s very important; it has its challenges most certainly, but it is incredibly rewarding.

a community with a kind heart tucked behind some pretty spectacular and famous landmarks.

Tell us about when you started your business. Our business began last September - 9 months of research followed with a specialist gem and mining consultancy company. We then launched our first collections this July at Beulah in Elizabeth Street. What was the motivation behind its creation? We were inspired by the beauty of the Swat Valley emerald mines, close to where we spent an important part of our childhood. We wanted to showcase them and the beauty of the area to London and the world. London is so highly influential it seemed the perfect city to start. Why did you choose Belgravia? We were fortunate to be befriended by Natasha Rufus Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan, the founders of Beulah, who offered to help us launch. We had planned to be online only and stock other luxury retailers but fell in love with the small bespoke shops in the area and saw this as a perfect fit for Myne. There's a sense of artistic freedom in this neighbourhood and

Tell us about any charity associations you have as a company. We were created specifically to help the economy of an emerging post conflict area (the Swat Valley) and to support women's enterprises wherever possible with sustainable business, which we are currently doing. We also support The Malala Fund with 10% of our profits. Malala is from Swat Valley and we are honoured to support her fund for the education of girls there and around the world. We will also be supporting Combat Stress with a cufflink specifically designed for them which will be available before Christmas. As a female leader, how do you feel about your role in business? We were privileged to have a supporter in Dr. Muhammad Makki at the Institute for International Peace and Stability, who said the following to us: "I truly believe that establishing an export-led benefaction industry within Swat will not only generate sustainable livelihoods but will also help in preventing future conflicts through fostering economic resilience". There is overwhelming global evidence that when WOMEN take their part in the economy it brings peace and stability to an area. So basically humanity works at its optimum best when women and men work together equally as a team! This is central to the MYNE philosophy.

CARINE GILSON COUTURE LINGERIE MODERN HANDCRAFT, PRECIOUS MATERIALS AND PURITY OF STYLE: THE CARINE GILSON LINGERIE COUTURE THROUGH THE WORDS OF ITS FOUNDER.

Tell us about when you started your business. I established my brand almost thirty years ago. It all began when I set foot in a small lace workshop in the heart of Brussels. I began to write this beautiful story at the age of 23. Just one year after finishing my fashion degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, I decided to buy the atelier from the two 80-year olds that were about to quit their lifelong passion. What was the motivation behind its creation? I have always loved the atmosphere of Belgravia, our first boutique when we settled in London in 2007 was located near Motcomb Street. In 2011 we moved our corner boutique to 11 Pont Street, a very cosy street with Japanese cherry trees that bloom in April. I love this shopping destination, with beautiful little houses and small shops. It makes me think of a small, chic, very well located village - just 5 minutes from Sloane Street.

"I THINK WOMEN IN BUSINESS LOVE CHALLANGES, THEY HAVE TO TAKE UP CHALLENGES, IT'S PART OF THEIR DNA". CARINE GILSON

Tell us about any charity associations you have as a company. We have already had the opportunity to participate in several charity projects in Brussels and London. We are often asked to auction our enigmatic James Bond déshabillé and it is always an honour to contribute. As a female leader, how do you feel about your role in business? A businesswoman is for me an impulsive woman. She is passionate about everything and likes to do many things at the same time. I think business women love challenges, they have to take up challenges, it's part of their DNA...

"I WANTED TO BRING MAGIC TO THE EXPERIENCE OF BUYING AND SELLING CHOCOLATE. I WANTED TO CREATE A FANTASY WORLD WHICH CUSTOMERS COULD STEP INTO” CHANTAL COADY OBE

THE BELGRAVIA ROCOCO WAS THE THIRD STORE OPENED IN 2007

18

ROCOCO CHOCOLATES CHANTAL CODY OBE, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF ROCOCO CHOCOLATES, EXPLAINS HER BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY, PROJECTS AND THE ART OF BRINGING MAGIC.

Tell us about when you started your business. I founded Rococo just after I graduated from art school, with a degree in textile design and some experience in selling chocolate at Harrods while I was a student. I opened the first shop on King’s Road in 1983. What was the motivation behind its creation? The main idea was to bring magic to the experience of buying and selling chocolate. I wanted to create a fantasy world which customers could step into and share the joy and love of this wonderful sweet thing.

Tell us about any charity associations you have as a company. My current charities are Build Africa for their gender works, keeping girls in school after they hit puberty; LendwithCare, supporting entrepreneurs in third world with micro loans; World Land Trust, protecting ancient forests and endangered species; Crisis for homeless people at Christmas; Treloars, Working For Students With Disability and Maggie's Centres, helping people with cancer.

Why did you choose Belgravia? The Belgravia Rococo was the third store I opened in 2007, following on from the success of the Marylebone High St. shop. Grosvenor Estates were looking to create a similar retail destination, hand picking their favourite stores to achieve an eclectic mix, based on the butcher, baker and candlestick maker of old. In reality it's a very grand street and a good mixture of food, fashion, hair, beauty, leisure, interiors, art and dining, creating one of London’s secret villages.

As a female leader, how do you feel about your role in business? I've lived and breathed my role for over 30 years now and, in some ways, women have come a long way. But it's frustrating to see just how macho the world of business still is. So many people pretend that it's a level playing field, but I am not sure it ever will be. One thing I do know is that women tend to have the edge on EQ and approach things very differently and, I hope, with a more open agenda to help others along the way.

for other brands and I wanted to put the working woman in the spotlight. I wanted our customer to be able to reach for a Fold dress in the morning, enjoy getting dressed, feel like she can conquer the world – and then go do it.

THE FOLD “YOU ARE WEARING YOUR WORK CLOTHES FOR 60-70 HOURS PER WEEK, THESE SHOULD BE THE BEST CLOTHES IN YOUR WARDROBE!” SAYS POLLY MCMASTER, THE CO-FOUNDER OF THE FOLD STORE, IN THE HEART OF CHELSEA.

Tell us about when you started your business. The Fold was founded in 2012. My decision to set up the label was a mixture of instinct and numbers. I was at London Business School studying for my MBA, I was passionate about women in business and fashion. I felt there was a market opportunity. What was the motivation behind its creation? I was genuinely the customer of The Fold – a professional woman in a high flying career, struggling to piece together a work wardrobe that I actually liked and felt stylish and confident in. When most of the men in the room (and most in the room are men) are wearing bespoke suits, you need to be on a par sartorially to hold your own. Working women have money to spend and high demands for quality and style, but little time to shop. The offering for workwear felt like it was bottom of the agenda

Why did you choose Belgravia? When we were looking to open our first flagship store we reached out to our customers and asked them where they would like the store to be. The conclusion of our research was that we needed to find somewhere convenient for them, and appealing in terms of the balance between work and life. What's so wonderful about Chelsea is that it's extremely accessible from many other parts of London. It's a very rich place for our clients to go in terms of choice, finding lots of things she needs and also being somewhere extremely beautiful and inspiring. Tell us about any charity associations you have as a company. The Fold is proud to support Smart Works, a charity that helps unemployed women prepare for job interviews, providing them with business clothes to boost their confidence and giving them the interview skills they need to feel work-ready. The charity has a great synergy with The Fold's ethos of dressing for success. We host events to raise money for the charity and encourage clothing donations. As a female leader, how do you feel about your role in business? Before founding The Fold I was working in a very male dominated industry. I was focused on doing the very best job I could, without considering gender. Although this was in many ways an opportunity to stand out amongst my peers, I also wanted to be able to speak to and hear from other like-minded women. I had the same daily juggle of balancing family life and work as most women have and set out to build a community of women who could share advice, champion and support one another. This is the ethos behind The Fold.

Up to November 24th, watch 'Ear for Eye', written and directed by Debbie Tucker Green, one of the most acclaimed voices of the contemporary theatre scene.

Q&A WITH GARY LASHKO, CEO OF THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA

severe injuries. It’s therefore imperative for the Royal Hospital to stay at the forefront of veteran care, futureproof the historic buildings and make sure we have excellent services for those who will need us in the future.

“THE ROYAL HOSPITAL WAS FOUNDED BY KING CHARLES II OVER 325 YEARS AGO. REMARKABLY OUR VISION REMAINS THE SAME AS HIS: TO PROVIDE CARE, COMRADESHIP AND A HOME TO OLD SOLDIERS ‘BROKEN BY AGE OR WAR’. IT CONTINUES TO BE UNIQUE IN THE COUNTRY AND IN THE WORLD.''

What significance has the RH played for the area of Chelsea? When the Royal Hospital opened the area of Chelsea was essentially a village and was mainly connected to the rest of London via the Thames. The RH is an essential part of the local Chelsea community - we have hosted the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show for over 100 years and Chelsea FC’s nickname is ‘The Chelsea Pensioners’. We work closely with other care homes, charities, museums, galleries and businesses in the local area and are committed to supporting our community. As the Pensioners are so recognisable in their uniforms, they themselves are a welcoming sight for both tourists and residents alike – and wherever they go - help to spread a bit of that very special Royal Hospital Chelsea magic.

RH is a very historic institution. How does this coexist with today’s hyper technological world? Although the Royal Hospital is steeped in military tradition and is housed in buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren, one of the factors that sets us apart from other care providers is that we are progressive in our thinking and I believe we have been since we opened the doors to the first Chelsea Pensioners in 1692. The Royal Hospital balances the traditional with the contemporary on many of its projects. An excellent example of this is our recent modernisation of the Pensioners’ accommodation. Like the Army itself, the RH must ensure to remain ‘relevant’ and continue to keep up with technology. We need to adapt new technologies in tele-health, tele-care as well as emerging new artificial intelligence technology that can be applied to caring for older people. In which direction do you see RH going? Our traditions and military ethos are very important to the organisation, as are ensuring we can meet the changing needs of the Chelsea Pensioners. One of our main aims for 2019 is to develop our education and outreach work, which includes developing a strategy to share our learnings with other veteran care providers. We are also developing our work with schools and our heritage offer to visitors and tourists. For instance, looking at digital equipment for tours so visitors can hear our story in their own language. Are there any particular services you think are important for now and in the future? Although our current facilities are very good, one of my main aims as CEO is to ensure that the RH is financially stable and balances military tradition with modernity. Veterans of the future will have different needs to the Chelsea Pensioners of today, as advances in medical care in the field mean that soldiers are surviving even more DISCOVER

THIS IS THE ONLY RULE THAT GOVERNS IL PAMPERO, AS CHEF CLAUDIO COVINO TELLS US: ALL INGREDIENTS AND RAW MATERIALS AT THE HEART OF HIS CREATIONS MUST BE ITALIAN. BY ILARIA MAGGI

FOOD

IL PAMPERO OFFERS NUMEROUS CULINARY PROPOSALS WITH REGIONAL INFLUENCES, IN PARTICULAR FROM SOUTHERN ITALY.

28

"Italy is universally recognized as one of the richest countries in terms of raw ingredients. When you say Italian cuisine, the first thought goes to the great diversity of fruits, vegetables, cheeses" says chef Claudio Covino, born in Rome but living for years in London, where he has mastered the art of combining Italian traditional recipes with creative and contemporary techniques. "We try to source our raw ingredients directly from their place of origin. For example, my Tonnarelli cheese and pepper, one the most requested dishes at il Pampero restaurant, are made exclusively with original Roman pecorino". The rule is "absolutely Italian": "for fruit and vegetables" continues the chef, "we rely on Vincenzo LTD, where we are sure to find quality raw materials, of certified origin, and seasonal. An example? The puntarella, nettles, turnip greens are all sought-after products that are hard to find elsewhere ". FOOD

"For the selection of cheeses, only Italian, we rely on Emporio Fine Food" says chef Covino, who talks about his passion for cheese with buffalo milk from Campania, processed in Northern Italy. "The burrata from Adria, the Castelmagno with truffles, the Parmigiano Reggiano Vacche Rosse: here at Il Pampero we want to offer true Italian excellence". As well as the great classics, the chef loves to experience and find new ways to amaze his guests: "I recently discovered this cheese, similar in taste and consistency, but entirely vegan since it is made with thistle rennet. It's called Gran Kinara and we use it in several recipes and processes such as soufflĂŠ".

LONDON

One of Britain’s most popular motor shows returns to London on the first Saturday in November. The Regent Street Motor Show proved extremely popular last year, attracting more than 500,000 visitors. The huge number of visitors were treated to cars from all eras and were also offered short ‘taster’ test drives in a range of the latest battery-powered electric vehicles. With a promotional theme this year of ‘Showcasing the Future, Celebrating the Past', the Show promises to be equally engaging, one of its’ highlights being the veteran Concours d'Elegance with over 100 examples of pre-1905 cars. Alongside there will be displays of innovative automotive technologies destined for our cars of the future. Invited Motor Club displays and live music feature amongst the range of activities for the day. The Regent Street Motor Show and the Veteran Car Run are major events in the week-long London Motor Week held by the Royal Automobile Club with its combined activities providing a great opportunity for us all to go back to the future!

Highest Spec E Type Series 3

BENTLEY CELEBRATES 100 YEARS Bentley Motors are crowning their centenary celebrations with a very special edition of the Mulsanne. Deliveries of the Mulsanne W.O. commence in 2019, Bentley’s Centenary year. The 100 Limited Edition Mulsannes pay homage to the founding father of the Company, Walter Owen Bentley and the very last car he designed, the famous Bentley 8 Litre. Launched in 1930, it was the most powerful engine of any car available in Britain, a 7,983 cc straight six offering remarkable performance for its time. W.O. said of the 8 litre “I have always wanted to produce a dead silent 100 mph car, and now I think we have done it”. Mulliner designers reflected on the last 99 years, and present the W.O. Edition as a fitting tribute to the Company’s centenary celebrations. Each of the 100 Limited Edition Mulsannes includes a slice of the original crankshaft taken from W.O. Bentley’s personal 8 litre car decades ago. Key features include a colour split interior cut from Heritage Hide reflecting the patina of vintage cars, Beluga black wheels, and a stunning cocktail cabinet or bottle cooler featuring a slice of W.O.’s 8 litre crankshaft set into the armrest. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition can be specified on any of the three-model Mulsanne range.

FERRARI CHARMS SARDINIA More than 70 Classic Ferraris from all over the World gathered in Sardinia for the second Cavalcade Classiche. The event attracted Ferrari clients from over 20 different nations, driving some of Ferrari’s most famous masterpieces of the past. The Cavalcade started from Valle dell'Erica, and went on to explore the beauty of Northern Sardinia each day, including Alghero to the Valle della Luna, Castelsardo to Porto Cervo and the Island of Caprera, totalling some 800 Km in all, topping the celebrations with a spectacular parade and official presentation of all the cars to the public of Maddelena. HIGHEST SPEC E-TYPE SERIES 3 EVER? Owning a great original classic can be a truly rewarding experience. Yet it is an even better one if the car is bespoke, prepared to your exact personal requirements and to the highest standards. This rather special Series 3 V12 is a prime example of what can be done to spec a classic to your unique specification. This particular example, prepared by Kent based E-Types UK, is arguably one of the highest spec Series 3 E-Types ever produced. This 1974 example has been subjected to a 3,000-hour bespoke restoration not only restoring

the car to near perfection but tailoring all aspects of the car to the customers' exact requirements, resulting in greater power and a host of modern spec without sacrificing its original classic appeal. The original 5.3 litre V12 engine was fully rebuilt, with its engine capacity increased to 6.1 enabling the car to achieve a dyno proven 284 bhp - the original was 276 bhp - fitted to an aerospace grade aluminium 5 speed gearbox, plus extensive under the hood fettling. Similar bespoke treatment was undertaken to the inside of the car with specially lowered, custom heated leather seats, custom footwell and door flood lighting, and subtle daytime running lights, whilst the interior also benefits from a custom air conditioning system. Sadly, it’s not available for any of us to buy as it resides in the hands of its lucky customer, but if you’re going to do it then you may as well do it this well! LUXURY EVENT OF THE YEAR AS ROLLS-ROYCE LAUNCHES ITS FIRST SUV. When purist sports car makers Porsche launched their first SUV in 2002 (the Cayenne) few thought the brand diversification formula would work, yet the Cayenne became Porsche’s best-selling car. It is a success story many others have noted with interest, and now we have SUVs from Maserati (Levante), Bentley (the Bentayga) Lamborghini (Urus), and even Ferrari are planning on joining the SUV craze. And now the penny has finally dropped with Rolls-Royce, choosing Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the United States to launch their first ever SUV, the Cullinan. According to its makers, Cullinan intends to prove itself ‘Effortless Everywhere’. The fleet of Cullinans used for the launch will show a wide breadth of configurations to the world’s media for the first time, including a rear lounge seat configuration and rising boot floor or the most luxurious individual seat arrangement with champagne fridge and crystal flutes, and a glass partition between the luggage and passenger compartments. OWNING A GREAT ORIGINAL CLASSIC CAN BE A TRULY REWARDING EXPERIENCE. YET IT IS AN EVEN BETTER ONE IF THE CAR IS BESPOKE, PREPARED TO YOUR EXACT PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS AND TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS.

Hole in the US for the launch? Well, Rolls-Royce reckon it is one of America’s best kept secrets offering high-end outdoor lifestyle to its wealthy residents. It’s located in Teton which is home to some of the world’s most affluent people, as well as the destination for the annual gathering of Central bankers at the Economic Policy Symposium so we suspect they hope to sell a few cars there! MCLAREN – FASTEST GROWING LUXURY BRAND! Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show McLaren Automotive emerged as the fastest growing automotive luxury brand in the UK. The British creator of luxury sports cars and supercars recorded a 4.73 year on year growth and registered 390 vehicles in the first half of 2018. McLaren attribute the growth to the impressive performance of the brand's core models including the award-winning 720S and the open top McLaren 570S Spider. It means McLaren are now producing 20 cars per day to meet demand; this includes the latest of the brand the McLaren Senna, a tribute to the ex triple World Champion Ayrton Senna. This incredible supercar will hit 62 mph in 2.8 secs and top 208mph, the first UK model is soon to be delivered. If you’re lucky to be one of the 500, it's yours for £750k.
