HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GALLERY

2 Szent Gyรถrgy Square, Budapest 1014

The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public collection documenting and exhibiting the evolvement of fine arts in Hungary. Its collection includes artifacts stemming from the era of the establishment of the state to contemporary arts. Its permanent exhibitions provide a comprehensive picture of the history of Hungarian arts. The establishment of the Hungarian National Gallery was part of a larger, characteristic process of Hungarian museology: beginning in the 1870s, the various collections that constituted the Hungarian National Museum (founded in 1802), started to form separate, specialized museums. Accordingly, the collections preserving the artworks (especially that of fine arts) became part of the Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1896. The rapid growth of the section of modern artworks however, necessitated the Hungarian and the international material to be separated as early as the 1920s. As a result of this, the New Hungarian Picture Gallery of the Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1928. Housed in a separate building but remaining part of the same institution, it exhibited artworks starting from the Nagybรกnya period. After 1945, the cultural politics returned to the old idea of institutional centralization: the collection of the Municipal Picture Gallery became nationalized and was incorporated into the Museum of Fine Arts. By doing so, the Museum faced difficulties in properly exhibiting the even larger collection of Hungarian artworks. The new cultural policy of a completely separated museum of Hungarian artworks was conceived just after the Hungarian Revolution: this is how the Hungarian National Gallery was established in 1957. The next big turning point in the history of the museum came in 1975, when it was moved to the renovated B, C and D buildings of the Buda Castle. The new location opened its first exhibition to the public in October 1975, where the main attractions were the medieval winged altarpieces. The medieval material used to be part of the Early Hungarian Department of the Museum of Fine Arts, meaning that the display of the complete history of Hungarian art from the 11th century to modern times opened for the very first time in the Buda Castle only after this collection was also moved to the National Gallery. In 2005 the exhibition spaces of the Hungarian National Gallery expanded with the addition of building A, which houses the large-scale temporary exhibitions. In 2012 the Museum of Fine Arts and the National Gallery became a united institution. As a result of this, the reorganization of the collection has started, in which the main concept was to present the variety and historical continuity of the collected material. The reorganized permanent exhibitions display Hungarian and international artworks from 1800 together.
