We enjoyed it so much, we did a little research. We discovered that this special day was founded and nationally recognized in 2004! The founder, Colleen Paige, is an author and animal behaviorist. She launched this idea as a way to bring light to the abuse dogs face around the world. She wanted people to know the suffering that dogs faced in places like puppy mills and other harsh environments. Her goal was to focus on the love we could give our friends instead. Now, 15 years later, we are still recognizing this beloved day. Paige has various social media pages that inform others about her work. She even held a #nationaldogday photo contest this year in which many people participated.

Pet-owners and nonpet-owners alike used this day to give a little extra attention to their furry friends. Some people bought their puppies a squeaky POOL TIME! toy or an extra-large bone. Others took their pet to a dog park or on a relaxing walk. Some simply stayed home and stole some extra cuddles on the couch. Maybe you were one of the thousands of people that posted on social media to brag on your adorable best friend. However you spent National Dog Day this year, be content in knowing that others around the world share your love for our barking friends. Just remember, we should appreciate our pups EVERY day of the year! They’ve brought us so much joy, the least we can do is send much deserved love their way as much as possible.

Dog Car Safety:
Myth: Pets can ride freely in the car while traveling To kick off the “Myth Busters” issue, we also found out that while many of us travel regularly with our pets, we may be unwittingly putting our furry loved ones at risk. With so many dogs injured or killed after being left in hot cars, there has been a lot of publicity on the safety of pets in cars in general. There’s no doubt that pets are considered members of the family and more people than ever are allowing their pets to ride in the car, but without any sort of safety belt. Studies have shown that while the idea of having your pet in the car sounds nice, the actual act is a bit risky. This leads to the question of whether or not it’s a myth that dogs create more tension by riding free rather than less tension. A recent study by Volvo revealed that when we allow our pets to roam free in our cars, the risk of getting harmed in an accident is increased. Volvo’s website actually hosts a line of pet safety-products such as harnesses and car seats. To further ensure your pet’s safety, Volvo promises to donate $10 of every pet accessory sold to the Petfinder Foundation.
DOG GATE
This organization supports the adoption of pets. Along with worrying about our companions, Volvo emphasizes the importance of our own safety as well. It is proven that people who travel in vehicles with their pets are much more distracted drivers. This can lead to wrecks which can harm you, your pet, and others. It is also common for tension to build as frustration with your pet increases. What was intended as a peaceful road trip can often turn into a car full of chaos. So, to ensure that you and your pet are safe and happy, make sure to secure them nicely on your next car ride adventure. LOAD COMPARTMENT DIVIDER

WATCH OUT FOR THESE MISSOURI TO PETS, SOME MUSHROOMS MIGHT BE TASTY, SOME MIGHT BE TERRIBLE, BUT BE CAREFUL, BECAUSE SOME ARE DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. Many people aren’t aware of the dangers lurking in their own yard, so we thought we would take a moment to focus on one we tend to overlook--mushrooms. Mushrooms tend to flourish during wet and rainy periods, most often appearing in spring and fall months. They can grow almost anywhere
and often appear overnight. Not every mushroom is toxic, but those that are can cause serious illness, and even death in pets. There are three dangerous groups of fungi that exist in Missouri. These are the amanitas, false morels, and a catch-all category known as little brown mushrooms.
False Morels
AMANITAS
FALSE MORELS
Amanitas
Amanitas are usually found on the ground in woodlands and open places in summer and fall. Mushrooms in this group contain amanitin, one of the deadliest poisons found in nature. In fact, one cap of Amanita bisporigera (‘destroying Angel”) can kill a person. These toxins work by slowly shutting down the liver and kidneys. Early signs appear within 6-24 hours after ingestion, including abdominal pain,

yellowing of eyes and skin, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. This is followed by a quiet phase, eventually leading to full liver failure, low blood sugar, excessive bleeding, brain damage, coma and even death. Many dogs pass away 3-5 days after ingestion of the mushrooms. There is no antidote for this type of mushroom once ingested, so early diagnosis and treatment of the symptoms are critical.

False morel mushrooms are found in spring, summer, and fall in woodlands. They are commonly mistaken for true morels, which are edible--these mushrooms, however, contain the chemical monomethyl hydrazine (MMH), which causes diarrhea, vomiting, severe headaches and can occasionally be fatal. If cooked appropriately, these mushrooms can be eaten and are sometimes considered a delicacy. But, to be safe, keep your pup away from any of these raw mushrooms!

Little Brown Mushrooms
This category of mushrooms includes small to medium-sized, brown mushrooms with spores of all colors. They are found in all seasons and in all habitats in Missouri. They range from being harmless to severely poisonous. One of the deadliest in this category is galerina autumnalis, which can be found in woodlands on decaying logs. The deadly Galerina contains the same toxin as amanitas, causing liver and kidney damage and even death. There are hundreds of additional mushrooms that cause less severe symptoms, ranging from stomachache to vomiting and diarrhea. Two common mushrooms of this type include the Omphalotus olearius (“jacko’-lantern”) and Chlorophyllum molybdites (“greenspored lepiota”). The clinical symptoms of ingested mushrooms vary based on the species

of mushroom, the toxin within the mushroom, the amount ingested, as well as the age and size of the pet. Not every mushroom is toxic, but it can be difficult to identify poisonous mushrooms from those that aren’t. It is best to avoid giving mushrooms of any type to your

pet. If your pet does eat a mushroom and shows symptoms, consult a local veterinarian immediately. Provide a complete timeline of events, list of symptoms, and try to bring in a sample of the mushroom ingested.

the truth behind a
dog’s life
MYTH: SERVICE DOGS ARE THE SAME AS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOGS AND THERAPY DOGS. FACT: TO BE CONSIDERED A SERVICE ANIMAL, A DOG MUST FOLLOW SOME VERY STRICT GUIDELINES.
1.They are specially trained to assist just one person.
20 K SERVICE DOGS IN THE U.S.
2. THEY PERFORM TASKS FOR PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL & PSYCHIATRIC DISABILITIES.
3. They are allowed to live with their owner in properties that do not allow pets.
4. They are trained to tolerate a wide variety of experiences, environments & people. 5. THEY ARE VERY WELL BEHAVED, THEY DON’T BARK or WHINE or SNIFF & JUMP AT PEOPLE. 6. Service dogs can aid in navigation for people who are hearing and visually impaired, assist an individual who is having a seizure, calm an individual who suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and even dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
7. They are often identified by wearing a service dog vest or tag, letting the public know that it is a service dog.
8. SERVICE DOGS SAVE LIVES! 10

BOTH THERAPY AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THE ADA (AMERICAN’S WITH DISABILITIES ACT).
MYTH BUSTERS: YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD AT LEAST A FEW OF THESE. MAYBE YOU’VE EVEN SAID THEM.
BUT, ARE THEY TRUE? These are common statements used in the “pet world” that may be taken as truth. Research, however, reveals that these are not based on scientific fact.
1
CATS ALWAYS LAND ON THEIR FEET.
2
A DOG’S MOUTH IS CLEANER THAN A HUMAN MOUTH.
We don’t even want to think of how may cats have had this theory put to the test (insert “shudder” here). Cats, as very agile creatures, do instinctively attempt to land feet first, but they may not be able to.
It sounds so contradictory, you may have thought it just might be true. Dogs eat gross things, lick their unmentionables, and do not brush their teeth after every meal. Think of all the tasty dog food or cat litter “treats”! For these reasons and many more, they do not have a cleaner mouth than ours (most of ours anyway…).
tamepetmagazine.com 11
3
A PURRING CAT AND A DOG WITH A WAGGING TAIL SIGNIFIES HAPPINESS.
4
IF A DOG IS EATING GRASS, HE IS SICK.
Sadly, no. Most of the time it may, but cats will purr when they are anxious or stressed too. It is thought that purring is comforting to our feline friends. Dogs by the same token wag their tail when they are happy, but that’s not the only time. They will also do it when they are angry, scared, or irritated. Both purring and tail-wagging seem to be a way that our pets convey strong emotion.
Possibly, but not always. While dogs will eat grass to help them vomit, they will also eat grass when they feel perfectly fine. They’ve been known to eat it for fun, out of boredom, or even just because it tastes good to them.
5
CATS CAN SEE IN THE DARK.
6
THE WETNESS AND TEMPERATURE OF YOUR DOG’S NOSE INDICATES HEALTH.
7
A DOG’S AGE IS SEVEN YEARS TO EVERY ONE HUMAN YEAR.
They sure make us think they can when they are batting something around the house at 2am. Actually, they can see in dim light. One reason for this is because a cat’s pupils open wider than ours, letting in more light.
While a significant change in your dog’s nose might be worth taking note of, it isn’t a reliable indicator of illness or wellness. Fluctuations in the state of a dog’s nose are normal. Better clues that something might be up are changes in appetite and behavior.
12
We’ve covered this one before. It’s just so often repeated that we feel it bears covering again. This is not a way to accurately calculate your dog’s age. Why? Because there are a lot of factors that come into play. Smaller dogs generally live a lot longer than larger ones and therefore are considered to age much slower. There are lots of charts online that show better ways to understand your pet’s true age as it compares to yours.
tamepetmagazine.com
8
RATS ARE A DANGEROUS PET.
9
FERRETS ARE WILD ANIMALS.
These poor creatures get a bad rap due to stories like that of the black plague. In actuality, it was fleas that were responsible for that epidemic. Rats have also been accused of being aggressive. But really, they have been shown to be smart, loving companions to humans.
Well, maybe they ONCE were. But not in the recent past. The ferrets we enjoy as pets today, quite honestly, would not fare well in the wild at all. The only truly wild ferret is the Black Footed ferret.
10
RABBITS ARE AN OUTDOOR ONLY PET.
These adorable critters make wonderful pets when properly cared for. This includes having them “fixed” and keeping them largely indoors. While they can technically survive in an outdoor hutch, it isn’t an ideal home and leaves them susceptible to exposure, parasites, predators, and all too often, neglect.

n a m l i a the M Gretchen and Fernando By Macie Thornhill Have you ever been amused by a television show or cartoon in which a terrified mail carrier is seen sprinting back to the safety of his car as a barking puppy chases close behind? Despite images we may have seen on film, the idea that dogs hate mail carriers is a myth. In fact, it is more likely that few dogs actually dislike mailmen. This myth may have come about due to the fact that some dogs can be very territorial. When a mail carrier enters a dog’s proximity, the initial instinct of the dog is to protect what is his. However, this reaction should not be stereotyped for all dogs. If you need proof, take a look at this lovely story of an unlikely friendship between a mail carrier and a German shepherd. Chris Cimino adopted Gretchen as an adult German shepherd. Having a rough life so far, Gretchen was often nervous around people and didn’t socialize easily. Her mistrust for humans was evident, but eventually, she developed a friendship that inspired thousands of people. Fernando Barboza, a mail carrier in Texas, would drive the same route every day to deliver mail to the houses in his area. He met Gretchen and gave her attention every time he passed her house. While Gretchen didn’t know how to take her new friend at first, she slowly started to wait for the time of day when Fernando would say hello. Fernando got into the habit of bringing Gretchen treats when he stopped by. If he couldn’t find the time to stop, he would drive by and say, “Hey, Gretchen.” The bond between these two grew so strong that Gretchen could be seen waiting by the door for Fernando to make his rounds. Her owner commented that Gretchen would even get jealous if she saw him delivering packages to the neighbors. The love between these two was evident. Unfortunately, Gretchen passed away in early April due to health issues. Fernando was heartbroken to hear that his friend had died, but Gretchen continued to leave her mark in his life when her owner handed Fernando a package of dog treats with a note that stated that Gretchen wanted him to deliver these treats to the other dogs on his route. Although Gretchen isn’t with us any longer, the story of this improbable bond proves that friendship can be found anywhere, even between a dog and a mailman. My th: orm gw Rin is a worm
Truth: It’s a fungus.
That’s right. Pet owners may believe ringworm is a worm due to its round shape and texture. However, it actually is a fungal infection, which often results in dry, itchy skin and hair loss. It is also highly contagious and can be passed from animals to people (and vice-versa). Fortunately, it can be cured fairly easily. Suspect ringworm on your dog or cat? Contact Galloway right away to receive the best treatment for your furry friend.
