The past few years have brought about so many changes in how we, as a community, do lots of things. The after-effects of pandemic will be with us for a long time or, in some cases, FOREVER. One of the most disheartening things our area is dealing with is an astounding number of homeless and discarded animals. In addition, rising costs, staffing issues and even mental health, are part of the equation too. For this issue, we wanted to reach out to learn more about local rescues and how we can help those who are trying to make a difference in such a challenging time.
Emily Tayrien
In recent years, there has been a lot going on for our local animal rescues. The pandemic intially helped needy animals, as people had extra time to dedicate to a new pet. During 2020 and 2021, shelters saw an increase in adoptions.
Post-pandemic, however, the effect of people returning to work and the office, along with shifts in the economy, have resulted in new, overwhelming challenges for those tasked with saving lives.
Since 1992, Castaway Animals Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.), has saved more than 25,000 lives. Our mission is to rescue as many animals from death row as we
can properly provide and care for. This includes medical treatment for sick and injured stray animals, an aggressive spay and neuter program and a high-volume adoption program. We also network and provide rescue services for other shelters.
the C.A.R.E. Pet Ser vices Center. We currently own the building, but we are still raising funds to bring this dream to reality. The center will provide affordable ser vices to low-income families and seniors. The goal is to reduce owner surrenders, decrease the number of animals on the streets and abandoned in shelters, and keep them in loving homes, ultimately reducing the euthanasia rate. Ser vices and programs will include, but
are not limited to, a welcome center, pet adoptions, K-9 training, behavioral consultation, humane education, grooming, a full-ser vice wellness center, spay/neuter assistance, a compassionate learning center, rescue and rehabilitation, lost and found ser vices, and a food pantr y.

We are a no-kill, cage-free shelter just for cats. We’ve grown rapidly and have taken in and adopted out more than 300 cats each year for the past three years. Our mission is, “To provide a safe, cage-free haven for abused, abandoned, and unwanted cats, with the goal of adopting them into forever homes. We provide loving care and sanctuary to cats deemed as ‘unadoptable.’ We also educate the public about pet overpopulation and the importance of spay/neuter.”
Our cats live in communal rooms with attached outdoor “catios.” We accept senior cats and feline leukemia positive cats, with dedicated rooms for each. We also support local trap-neuter-release programs.
Since 2010, Co-Founder, Leslie Sawyer has served as Shelter Director. At that time, the rescue was housed in a converted barn without electricity or running water. Today, she oversees a building modeled after Cat World at Best Friends Animal Society.
We house about 90 cats at our cage-free shelter and have as many as 30 kittens and/or pregnant cats with fosters each year. We currently have 95 cats in the rescue, with 66 at the shelter and 29 kittens and mamas staying with fosters.
Some issues have worsened in the past few years, such as cost of veterinary care, food and supplies, staf ng shortages, and less access/longer wait times for low-cost spay/neuter services. We changed to by-appointment-only during the pandemic and decided to continue that afterward. We also place cats in the adoption center at the South Campbell PetSmart, host in-person adoption events, and have added monthly, virtual adoption events from our shelter for cats.
How can people help?
Volunteer! We have daily morning and evening shifts. Opportunities include socializing cats, driving cats to and from veterinary appointments, fostering pregnant cats and/or caring for kittens and helping with fundraising and social media management. We also need a good used or new van to transport cats.
A misconception is that our shelter is “too far away” to volunteer or adopt. We are only 18 minutes north of the Library Station on HWY 13 or 25 minutes from downtown Spring eld.

Pandemic adoptions soared. Post pandemic we have seen an unbelievable number of abused, starved, and dumped dogs, as well as, an abundance of owners surrendering pets, claiming to be unable to give their dog the time and training needed. We are seeing so many dogs that are unsocialized and untrained.
We have never seen the rescue world at the critical level it is now. Foster homes make it possible for us to save lives, as we do not have a facility. Currently, we have an urgent need for quali ed fosters to help us save more lives.
If anyone is interested in fostering or volunteering, they can message our rescue page on Facebook or email us online. Since we are volunteer/foster based, we do not have a brick-and-mortar of ce or phone number, but respond to messages as frequently as possible.
Your volunteer and nancial support are greatly appreciated. You help us to meet our goals and improve conditions for the animals in our care. We do monthly events with our adoptable pets, as well as, fundraisers. Your help with those and generous donations fund our mission. Please consider reaching out to help us with your time or to donate. You can easily donate on our website.

HavaHeart Rescue was founded in September 2016 with the mission to rescue endangered dogs, primarily those from the puppy mill industry. We promise to heal their bodies and their spirits and adopt them into loving, deserving homes.
Laura Tacke has been with us since 2018. She saw an opportunity when the rescue took in forty-six Havanese breeder dogs and jumped in blindly. Though it was an enormous undertaking, she watched a dog transform, after years of neglect, from a scared soul to a beloved family member. Since her rst fostering experience, she has taken in countless dogs and served in various volunteer positions.
We are a foster-based rescue based in Spring eld, MO, with networks across Missouri and others throughout the Midwest. We are completely staffed by
volunteers, so 100% of the donations we receive serve dogs in our care.
Although we take in dogs from all situations, most come from commercial breeding facilities, having suffered years of emotional and physical neglect. We have over two hundred dogs in foster care.
Since the pandemic, we are seeing an unprecedented number of intake requests and owner and breeder surrenders. We simply cannot keep up. Being foster-based, we can only help if we have fosters willing to take dogs in.
A common theme of our intake requests is unwanted litters and dumped dogs. We believe these two trends go hand in hand. It is so important for the community to understand the importance of spaying and neutering.
How can people help?
ADOPT. If you are ready to open your home to a new companion, please apply online. An approved application does not mean you have to adopt right away, but it does allow you watch for a good t as dogs become available.
FOSTER. The need for foster homes is ever-growing. So many deserving dogs are ready for their freedom ride.
Apply to foster on our website and jump in when you can.
DONATE. We cannot continue our mission without you. Our rescue is run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Every dollar donated will bene t our dogs.

General Info/Mission
The mission of the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri is to aid in the alleviation of distress and suffering of animals by operating a shelter for animals in need of care, placing animals in suitable homes, and offering educational programs that promote animal welfare.
Director/Management
Executive Director, Sue Davis, has been with us for 7 years. She was previously the executive director of PAWS Chicago for 5 years and was a banking executive for many years. “I was excited to lend my nancial expertise and No Kill shelter experience to further the mission of the Humane Society and help animals in SW Missouri,” says Davis.
Type of Organization and Animals in Care
We have a wonderful, 15,000 SQF fa-
cility with outside grounds and a robust foster program, which gives us additional lifesaving capabilities. We typically house 200-300 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, with another 100 or so in foster care.
Post 2020 (or Pandemic), what have you experienced in rescue/care?
Recruiting and retaining volunteers has affected us. Everything is a lot more expensive— dog food, medical and of ce supplies, occupancy expense and staff expense - yet we are limited in what we can charge for adoption fees or people don’t adopt.
Other Concerns
Many people are unaware that we are a No Kill organization and are not afliated with any of the large national organizations (like Humane Society of the U.S.). We do not receive any government funding. Our work is funded solely by the kindness of our donors.
How can people help?
That’s easy! Adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate! Donations are tax deductible and with our quantity/shelter discount
and 501(C)3status we can stretch your donation dollars MUCH further.
Keeping animals out of rescue is an important part of our work. We have a pet food bank to help nancially challenged families feed their pets rather than giving them up. We also have a discounted dog training program to help your pet
behave, rather than relinquishing them. Finally, we offer low-cost veterinary care (Cooper Clinic) so people can keep their pets healthy. We are also adding a new mobile spay/neuter van (compliments of the Cook Family Foundation).

We save lives weekly from the local animal control euthanasia lists as foster/ space allows.
Valley Hills has been a part of the community for around 20 years. It was founded by director and owner, Mary Gillam. She is a retired nurse of 30 years. Upon moving to a rural area in Missouri, she found that dogs were often dumped and would make their way to her home. She vetted them and found them homes. Over the years, the rescue has grown and continues to grow with our amazing team.
We are a 501(c)3 rescue that runs solely on donations. We specialize in death row and special needs animals. We foster and house animals at our facility. Our foster program is essential to our
success in saving animals. As we prepare for more animals to enter our shelter, we have a continual need for more foster homes. Our adoption program process includes an application. Once it has been processed, you will be contacted with next steps, including an in-home trial period to ensure a perfect t for you, your family, and the pet. We currently have 52 animals in our care.
Post 2020 (or Pandemic), what have you experienced in rescue/care?
The number of animals being dumped or not reclaimed from local animal control has become more of a problem in this area. We need more foster homes to save lives as the number of animals in need climbs higher and higher every day.
How can people help?
We accept monetary donations, including gift cards, purchases from our Amazon Wishlist and welcome volunteers and foster homes. We also are always in need of more volunteers to help with kennel cleaning, exercise, and enrich-
ment of the animals at the shelter, as well as, assisting at adoption and fundraising events. Our greatest assets are our volunteers. Without them, we could not exist. The number of dogs and cats we can save depends on the number of people we have helping us.
We participate in three programs in our community, K9s for Camo, Puppies For Parole and our Barn Cat Program.

We were established at the Community Foundation of the Ozarks in 2015 for cat loving individuals to make tax deductible donations to make a difference in the lives of felines. We support routine vet care, as well as, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) assistance and emergency vet assistance for kitties on a caseby-case basis. With your help, WOW has been able to TNR, vet and/or place well over 2000+ kitties. Your kindness and compassion have given our amazing WOW volunteers the ability to help defenseless felines who have no voice but our own.
WOW was founded in 2015 in Southwest Missouri by the current Executive Director, Marci Bowling.
Type of Organization and Animals in Care
We are a home-based foster cat rescue where we have house cats
and kittens readyto adopt.Typically we help 225-300 cats and kittens each year.
Post 2020 (or Pandemic), what have you experienced in rescue/care?
Covid, the lack of veterinary care nationwide, supply chain issues/restrictions, further compounded by the mental health of everyone, brought animal abuse and neglect to an all-time high. The volume of sick and injured cats and kittens multiplied at a level that will take decades to balance.
How can people help?
WOW needs Fosters, Funding, Forever
Homes and Fabulous Felineteers. We are also in need of various consumable supplies.
Additionally, please take “found” animals to be scanned for a microchip and con rm gender. This is a FREE walk-in service at any vet. Then, post on every photo by: UTurn Studios

able to communicate with you and see how we can help. We begin each day praying we will have enough resources to serve those in our care and do all we can on their behalf. As a species we have got to DO better and BE better.

We are a non-pro t 501(c)3, non-kill animal rescue group, dedicated to saving Weimaraners in Missouri, Nebraska, and surrounding areas. We help to heal emotional and physical wounds, educate the public on the breed, temperament, training, exercise, and leadership. Our ultimate goal is to provide animals with respect, care, medical attention, and the opportunity to be part of a loving, forever home.
Director/Management
Director and Founder of Wonder Weims Rescue, Angie Pillman, has been involved in rescue for over 21 years! Her rst rescue, Morgan, was a Weimaraner who has since passed, but from her, she carries the spirit of rescue. “Although rescue can be extremely challenging, I wouldn’t give it up for the world,” says Pillman. We also have an
tamepetmagazine.com
extraordinary group of volunteers that make this rescue successful. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Primarily foster-home based, when our capacity limit is reached, we also work with three boarding/training facilities. Wonder Weims rescues and places an average of 100 dogs each year and educates the public on spaying and neutering (a Wonder Weim requirement). We have also branched out to rescue Dobermans, Great Danes and Vizslas and assist with food and other resources. We currently have 12 dogs in our care including, Weimaraners, Great Danes and Labrador Retrievers.
Post 2020 (or Pandemic), what have you experienced in rescue/care?
The pandemic signi cantly affected fundraising efforts. We have not been able to resume many of our events. It seems the energy and enthusiasm for fundraisers is not there. There was an uptick in fostering and adopting but recently, we have seen a decline in both areas.
Lack of fosters and increased costs. We cover the costs for fosters, but do not have enough help. Additionally, vet care, food, and other costs continue to rise. One emergency bill can drain our account.
How can people help?
Volunteer! We need fosters, transporters, and fundraising volunteers.
