Hello Summer! This issue addresses the importance of socializing our pets. While there have been challenges recently to how we might typically go about this, it is still very important. As things can and do return to normal, take time to enjoy and safely explore the world together. Editor in Chief

start by hand feeding small treats, then handling them when they seem to become comfortable. Once hand tamed, you can start allowing them to explore their surroundings. Just be sure to take appropriate safety precautions. Socialization for any pet – no matter the species – requires hard work, patience and knowledge. Being aware of your pet’s personality and negative triggers is crucial to knowing which approach to take. Don’t rush or overwhelm your pet. Find a balance between personal time and social time and consider assistance from a professional, if needed. The benefits of a well-socialized pet are numerous. Taking the time to
work on socialization with your pet helps ensure they reach their full potential as your companion. It also minimizes stress, fear and anxiety, allowing them to live healthier and happier lives.
Well socialized pets tend to be: • More trusting and affectionate • Comfortable in a new, different situations • Less difficult and more enjoyable to groom • More fun to travel with • Better behaved for veterinary visits tamepetmagazine.com 15

Pet Wise
SUPERVISE!
Don’t assume your dog is good with children. If a toddler interacts with your dog, have your hands on the dog too. Even if your dog is great with kids and has never biten anyone—why take the chance? Do not allow kids to hug or kiss your dog. If visiting kids are bothering your dog, separate them.
Before the Bite 6 TIPS FOR DOG
BITE PREVENTION Don’t take chances when it comes to the health and safety of your pets and those they interact with.
TRAIN YOUR DOG
Enroll your dog in obedience classes where positive reinforcement is used. Never pin, shake, choke, hold your dog down or force your dog to do anything in order to teach it a lesson. Condition your dog to enjoy the presence and actions of other people, including children.
SPAY OR NEUTER
AVOID RISK
Neutered pets are said to be calmer and less aggressive. Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions.
It’s important to know how to avoid escalating risky situations and to understand when you should and should not interact with dogs. Be cautious if a dog is not with it’s owner, eating, sleeping, injured, growling, or barking. Do not reach through a fence to pet a dog. Always ask an owner’s permission to pet their dog.
GIVE YOUR DOG ATTENTION
Do not leave dogs alone for long periods in the backyard even if there is a fence. Unsupervised dogs may develop undesirable behaviors, such as digging, barking, or or aggression toward people or other animals passing by.
TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET
It is recommended that you take your pet for regular visits/check ups—and not just when they need something serious attended to. Also, find out how your veterinarian works to make appointments as positive as possible and ways you can help too. tamepetmagazine.com 17
