OBSESSED WITH OUR PETS!
There’s no doubt about it, we are absolutely CRAZY about the “non-human” critters we share our lives and homes with.
The proof is in the numbers. Sales revenue for the pet industry has increased significantly every year for over a decade, from $50.96 billion in 2011 to approximately $123 billion in 2021. These numbers are not likely to go the other direction any time soon, either. Current projections show an anticipated 8% growth by the year 2030.
The percentage of pet owners in the U.S. spiked over the past 35years, as of 2024 86.9 million homes have pets.
WHERE IS THE MOST GROWTH?
Let’s break it down. Perhaps, not surprisingly, virtually every generation with all types of pets is experiencing rapid growth. The bulk of pet ownership looks something like this:
Generations
Generational ages vary slightly between sources.
Millennials (ages 28-43) 33%
Gen X (ages 44-59) 25%
Baby Boomers (ages 60-69) 24%
Gen Z (ages 12-27) 12%
continued
Homes with Pets Renters

Dogs or Cats?
65.1 million households have dogs
46.5 million households have cats
Other Types of Pets
11.1 million households have fish
6.7 million households have small animals (hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, mice, ferrets)
6.1 million households have birds
Forbes.com
WHAT’S DRIVING GROWTH?
To better understand the “what,” it’s important to look at the “who”. As we saw previously, Millennials make up the largest group of pet parents. This group has tended to delay having children and when they do, have smaller families. Additionally, Millennials consider pet care a significant part of their daily routines.
Other statistics indicate that Baby Boomers largely view their pets to be extended family members. Gen Xers, compared to other generations, are likely to own multiple dogs and least likely to own pets other than dogs and cats. GenZers, on the other hand, are more likely than any other group to have a variety of pets and may be the first generation to make the biggest sacrifices to own a pet, with some placing having pets over having a partner.
Households with annual incomes of $100,000 and over are most likely to own pets: 63% of households in this income bracket own dogs and 40% own cats.
Forbes.com
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR PET
PARENTS?
It means that across all generations, the relationship between pets and people is closer than ever. As more people consider pets to be family members, their needs and demands have led to all sorts of goods and services flooding the marketplace. From healthcare to daycare, virtually every category in the industry is finding new and better ways to accommodate pets and parents.
Homeowners are more likely to own pets than renters: 58% of homeowners have a dog and 36% have a cat, versus 39% and 29% of renters respectively.
WHAT DO PET PARENTS WANT?
Tracking where pet parents choose to spend money gives us a pretty clear indication of what is most important. When purchasing goods and services, modern families seem to place a high value on these things:
Relationships – Pet parents want to build stronger bonds with our animals as well as find caregivers we can trust and enjoy working with long term.
Professional Guidance – With so much information coming at pet parents from everywhere, it can be difficult to know what or WHO to listen to. Pet parents want to be able to rely on trustworthy sources to help them be sure they are doing what is best for fur-kids.
Convenience – Whether looking for ways to balance work and home life, or just having a preference for using technology, today’s pet parents place a premium on having easy and effective ways to communicate and care for pets.
Non-Traditional Options – Today’s pet parents are more open to trying things that were not available to previous generations. From food to training, pet parents are willing to explore new ideas and products.

WHAT PARENTS WANT WHAT PARENTS WANT
There is no doubt that the face of veterinary care has been changing over the years. Providers are looking for ways to better care for pets and to meet the demands of owners. When it comes to nutrition and healthcare, the importance of relationships and convenience, combined with a willingness to try new methods, has played a role in revolutionizing the industry.
Current statistics point to interest in the following things:
Access to Premium Foods
From all natural to freeze dried, the way pet parents are feeding pets is shifting away from traditional kibble. They tend to favor protein rich, limited ingredient meals and treats that are made in the United States.
“In the last few years, there has been a big change in the way people choose their pets’ nutrition. Pet parents are starting to really pay attention to the type and quality of ingredients in the food. That’s why we spend so much time researching the foods we carry. We do the homework for the consumer.”
—Jennifer Silverberg, Fetch Pet Supplies, Springfield, MO“I have an unwavering commitment to providing a peaceful departure for cherished pets, in the quiet embrace of home, surrounded by people who love them most. Each goodbye humbles me, reaffirming my passion for this calling.”
—Samantha Sellers, DVM, Peaceful Crossings, Springfield, MOInterest in Supplements
Now, more than ever, pet parents are considering holistic and natural products. They care about supporting and maintaining their pets’ mental and physical health. Popular supplements target energy levels, immune systems, and heart-health as well as those that help with stress and anxiety.
“We have a large variety of supplements, whether it be for calming, hip and joint, or digestive support, our neighbors love these items because they want the best for their pets. Most of our supplements are an easy everyday dose that can be given on food as a topper or in water.”
—MarisaWake, Pet Supplies Plus, Springfield and Surrounding Areas
“We take time with every patient. We don’t want them to feel rushed in any way. Our goal is to make sure no one walks out with any questions unanswered.”
—Heath Wiseman, DVM, Springfield Veterinary Center, Springfield, MO
Convenience of Technology
Telemedicine, fitness trackers, and the ability to purchase food and medications online are still trending upward. The ability to book appointments and communicate electronically are also popular options.
Personalization
More pet parents are seeking veterinary providers that treat both pets and caregivers as individuals, taking time to understand needs and priorities. Among other things, having staff that know us by name and providing good communication is highly valued.
“Our entire team is certified in Fear Free veterinary care, allowing us to tailor each exam to the needs of our patients. This reduces stress for pets and helps build a bond with our caregivers.”
—Kerry Wantuck, DVM, Healing Paws Veterinary Care, Springfield, MO
Because They’re
The same key factors in other aspects of the pet industry are evident in what products and services pet parents purchase. Priority is placed on convenience and having relationships with trustworthy professionals. These top the list of things pet parents value:
Luxury Grooming
Health-conscious, non-toxic, shampoos, conditioners, and other skin care products with a pampering, spa-like treatment are appealing.
“We have everything you need to pamper your furry family member and elevate your living space, from luxurious shampoos to stylish décor. Clients love our perfect blend of practicality and esthetics.”
—KarenDoss Fox + Hound Springfield, Surrounding Areas, and Global
“We strive to find quality, innovative products for pet parents that provide real value. Lupine allows us to feature unique and constantly changing designs backed by a lifetime guarantee — even if chewed”
—Leigh Daniels All About Dogs & Cats Springfield, MO
Quality and Customizable Products
Sustainably sourced, organic options are often preferred as are custom-fit collars harnesses, personalized toys, bedding, and apparel for both pets and parents are also popular.
Pet Friendly Travel
We like places that not only allow, but encourage, pet visitors. Pet-centric offerings by hotels, airlines, shops, and restaurants are sure to be popular. It also means products that make taking our pets along easier more desirable.
“Clients are looking for affordable, quality products designed with pets in mind. Pet Parents want super durable, trendy options. Also, they favor performance fabrics and solid or oxidized engineered wood. I love helping clients create beautiful, safe, pet-friendly homes.”
—Jillian Johnson, DesignerDecorating Den Springfield and Surrounding Areas
Functional Furnishings
Hard surface flooring, washable fabrics, scratch and stain resistant materials, along with built-in feeding stations, storage supply cabinets, catios, and bathing centers are seen more often. Pet parents also like designer crates, beds, aquariums, all combining function with style.
Rest Set Dog Bed, Crate and End Table FablePets.com
Indulgent Accommodations
When pets can’t go along, it’s important that they are as happy and stress free as possible. Pet parents appreciate specially educated, pet-loving caregivers as well as priority given to 27/7 safety and security. Many of us also enjoy access to live webcams.
Tailormade Subscriptions
Sparked by the pandemic, the popularity of pet delivery boxes has grown exponentially. Those that offer excellent selections, cater to specific pet needs and desires, and that make the ordering process super easy are rising to the top.
“We work with you to become a better handler and owner of your dog. We recommend you start training the minute you get your pet.
Precious K9s offers individualized training plans for each student. Remember, we call it dog training, but we have to train the humans too!”
—Carrie GalvanPrecious K9s Battlefield, Springfield, and Surrounding Areas
Recreational and Behavioral Training
Activities that enhance the bond between pets and owners are driving the growth of sport, fitness, therapy, and many other types of training. As with other service providers, a good relationship with a training professional is important, as many pet parents face common concerns, like house-breaking, separation anxiety, proper socialization, and heading off destructive behaviors.
