An idea came about that included the family pup to help out when customers were not permitted inside. However, the ingenious plan was not the result of shear business acumen. In fact, Soda, the beloved, 75 pound, senior boxer, belonging to Lori Yata, was already a steady employee. As a regular fixture in the business, 6

Soda was used to daily visits from customers. Once the restrictions took hold, the lack of traffic (and attention) Soda considered it his job to manage, were no longer a part of his day. His parents began to notice a change in Soda. He seemed to show signs of being depressed and was lethargic. His loving (and smart) parents decided to see if Soda would perk up if some of his friends could drive by & see him at the winery. Many of his pals

No doubt many businesses were forced to get creative when shutdowns and restrictions hit them hard in 2020. The Stone House Urban Winery in Hagerstown, Maryland was no exception.
AS REGULAR FIXTURE AT THE BUSINESS, SODA WAS USED TO DAILY VISITS FROM CUSTOMERS. (and their parents) were eager to pick up their favorite wines as they came by too. A form of no-contact delivery was devised. Soda was fitted with a convenient, comfy saddle bag to wear as he went out (under supervision) to greet his visitors. Soda took to the concept easily, with only a couple of literal “bumps” along the way. It took a few tries for the cheerful boxer to learn to navigate the doorways with his pack. And before long, the wine hauling pup was extremely popular. Once word got out, it was not only friends coming by
for a special delivery, new customers began to come too. Soda loves his work so much that his parents must remind him to stop and get his beauty sleep. It has been a win-win! Customers are excited to be able to safely make purchases, and Soda, who works for treats, receives the love and attention he’s been missing. + PANDEMIC PETS By Connie Rhoades Hinds
IT’S NOT ONLY BEEN HARD ON THE HUMANS! COVID-19 has been a constant topic of conversation for over a year now. We may be only beginning to understand the impacts locally, nationally and the world at large. But what about pets? Dependent upon us for their every need, our pets have no doubt been affected by such a significant change in the lives of their human counterparts.
THE BIG CHANGE. In the spring of 2020, the world as we knew it changed. Businesses shut down, schools closed, and families stayed home. This first phase of what would precede months of uncertainty, actually saw some positive side effects. Adoption Rates Soared.
Many people decided it was a good 10
tamepetmagazine.com
ON THE COVER time to adopt. With the entire family sheltering in place, those who had been considering a pet, decided to take the plunge. Several reports point to nearly one million dogs and cats having found a forever home by the end of 2020. Other less common pets also saw an increase in adoption rates. In addition, many families opened their homes to foster, which certainly helped the adoption boost.
parents and kids went back to the office and school, or began working and learning at home. Warmer weather also meant families were somewhat able to resume familiar activities, like visiting parks and outdoor dining. However, adapting
Pet owners bonded.
Being stuck at home, people spent more time with their fur-kids. Many pet parents took time to work on training that had previously been put off or ignored. Social media responded to this change in everyday life with hilarious memes depicting how the stayat-home recommendation was a dream come true for dogs, while cats were said to be put out by the abrupt shift in their daily routines. THE NEW NORMAL. A “new normal” settled in after initial shutdowns concluded. Businesses and schools began to reopen, but with significant changes, like masking and social distancing requirements. This meant that some

to what life had become was not without stress and anxiety for many. Pet Parents Worry.
As the months dragged on without any indication of things returning to normal soon, the uncertainty began taking a toll. News of layoffs quit becoming shocking. Some pet parents found relief in unemployment benefits and stimulus money or found ways to supplement incomes. Side hustles, like food delivery, grew exponentially. Those working from home made the best of it and everyone had to get more accustomed to virtual contact. Pets help us cope.
It has long been reported that pet companions are beneficial to the 12

physical and mental health of their owners. No other time in recent history has this benefit come more into play. Pets were the encouragement needed to get outdoors for walks and other socially distanced recreation. Indoors, they provided comfort by way of snuggles and entertainment. UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT. The vaccine release, businesses settling into routines of online staffing, and policies becoming more widely accepted, resulted in many being able to resume some semblance of normal daily life. Others, however, have been unable to find steady employment. Both situations have had serious effects on fur-kids.
ON THE COVER
WHILE SOME OF THE FELINE POPULATION MAY HAVE BEEN UNMOVED BY PARENTS LEAVING THE HOUSE MORE AGAIN, MANY DOGS, ON THE OTHER HAND, TOOK IT HARDER. Pets and Separation.
Pets Surrendered.
While some of the feline population may have been unmoved by parents leaving the house more again, many dogs, on the other hand, took it harder. Owners had to find creative ways to comfort lonely pets by medicinal or supplemental means, technological assistance or by exploring daycare and pet sitting options. Some found it necessary to make more trips back home, gradual separation training, and extra attention upon return.
If the adoption boom was a welcome surprise in early 2020, the flip side in later months was not. Loss of jobs and income affect everyone in the family – including pets. When many families hit harder times, pets needing to be rehomed became a real concern. As time goes on, more pet parents may be forced to move to find work or less expensive housing. It can be difficult to find places that allow pets.

This, combined with unsteady income, may mean less money for food and veterinary care. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. If your passion is pets, both yours and less fortunate ones, the coming months are a time to look for ways to help. Assist charitable organizations.
Consider fostering, adopting, and/or financially contributing if you are able. Many already volunteer tirelessly and are in dire need of support. Get involved if you can. If you are unable to physically help, consider financial contributions. Donations make it possible for organizations to provide for needy animals in our community.
Support other Pet parents.
Ideally, families would not need to be separated. Pets and their families need each other. If you can assist a struggling family, open your heart and do so. We all hope to see things stabilize soon. Until we are there though, we must do our best to help and care for others. If we can learn anything from our pets, it is their optimism and resilience. Take a page from their book on how to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. They are also perfect examples of how to show loved ones how much they mean to us and how to take each day as it comes.

HEALTH & NUTRITION
HEALTH CHECK
BALANCING DIET AND EXERCISE IS KEY Our tendency to spend more time indoors when it’s colder may result in some unhealthy behaviors for both you and your pets. Our fourlegged friends depend on us to keep them healthy and happy. It’s important to help them maintain proper weight and get enough exercise. 20
tamepetmagazine.com
HEALTH & NUTRITION Don’t Overfeed Eating too much can be just as bad as not eating enough when it comes to overall health. Like many of us, our pets can be quite content snuggling up on the couch for hours under a blankie. They may also be very happy to assist in the kitchen foraging for unnecessary snacks. Less activity, not balanced out with the appropriate caloric intake, can lead to harmful consequences. Determine how much food your pet really needs and modify diet, if necessary. Nutrition information found on your pets’ food can be a useful jumping off point. There are also online tools to help calculate how many calories your pet needs. Check in with your veterinarian. Seek professional assistance— especially if your pet has special
needs. Your vet can confirm your pet’s ideal weight and recommend ways to keep your fur-kid healthy.
Get Moving Some days, especially cold and nasty ones, it takes real effort to get moving. It is vital to your pet’s health (and YOURS too!). Exercise helps keep the metabolism up. Making time to burn off a few calories will also make you feel less guilty having a fun treat here and there. Make a point to schedule indoor activity. Play games and practice training with your dog. Your kitty might like some new toys, climbing a kitty tower or even chasing a laser. Get out of the house. If you are able, and weather permits, bundle up and take a brisk walk with your pal. You can also visit a dog park, schedule a playdate, enroll in a doggie daycare, or even take a training class. Our pets are just as likely to gain weight this time of year as we are. Take the time to balance diet and exercise so that both of you enjoy a healthier and happier year.
Side Note: Pets that tend to spend more time outdoors may actually require more food and calories during the colder months. Pets with joint issues may face more challenges getting exercise. Be sure to check in with your vet for information on meeting your pets’ unique needs.

SAVED BY A PANDEMIC
2020 was a crazy year and 2021 isn’t proving to be a cakewalk either. Still, there’s a silver lining. Meet pets whose lives were actually saved during a worldwide crisis.
Local Family Additions This 10-year-old was rescued by Kari Moline after being abandoned in the early months of Covid 19. Named in reference to his having a “white coat”, Kari was quoted on TIME.com as saying, “In the end, I’ve got antibodies and a dog named Fauci.” —Los Angeles, CA
Both cats and dogs, among other types of pets, found new homes in 2020. Nana helped fill a void in Elise Healy’s heart. After the disappointment of not being able to enjoy her planned vacation in France, she decided to use the time to assimilate a new family member into the mix. Nana’s hilarous antics have helped stem boredom and otherwise makes spending so much time at home bearable. —Seattle, WA
This lucky “pup” is an 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel who joined Nicole Parlee’s family last year. He came from HavaHeart Rescue from a puppy mill. His family is so in love and could not be happier that Baxter found his forever home with them. Nicole shared with TAME, “We waited a long time for a dog. This guy was worth the wait.” —Springfield, MO
Formerly a member of a wild pack of dogs in Blue Eye, Jules was thankfully caught and ended up in the home of Jillian Johnson. Most recently TAME met the new adoptee at an outdoor doggie parade, hosted by Jillian, at a nursing home. Jules obviously landed in the right spot. She seems to love meeting people and making furfriends too. Jillian even stated, “I hope to get her certified in pet therapy this year.” —Ozark, MO
While the recent months have been fraught uncertainty and some truly scary things, it is nice to know that many people opened up homes and hearts to foster or adopt animals in need. 28
