he Háromszék Dance Ensemble and the Heveder Band dedicate their performance to the memory of the legendary first violinist of the Kalotaszeg region, Sándor “Netti”Fodor (1922-2004). “When I listened to the record of the Heveder Band (Let it Go), I immediately liked the Kalotaszeg number. Heveder is currently the best band in Transylvania, their music is characterised by honesty and faithfulness to the style. Therefore the violin playing of Szabolcs Molnár and Levente Fazakas should just be connected to the great first violinist personalities of the past one hundred years in the Kalotaszeg region. Kalotaszeg is a sort of condensed Transylvania. From Felszeg to the banks of the Nádas river I found everything that Transylvania had to offer. Sophisticated and virtuoso instrumental music, which is old-fashioned but followed the development of the middle class. And the dance, which, in its couple dances and in its csárdás, carries sophisticated

he production was commissioned by the National Dance Theatre for adults, following the premiere of the children’s performance entitled The Arabian Nights. The performance was inspired by the film of the same title by Pier Paolo Pasolini. The original music was composed from the amalgamation of contemporary and oriental musical motifs by the Swiss composer, Philippe Héritier. It is the story of a magical dream domi-

nated by desire and eroticism. Through the stories of The Arabian Nights we can experience the trials and tribulations of becoming an adult and the fears from adult existence. Miracles happen in the stories and everything, even death, is reversible, in fact there is no sharp dividing line between the living and the dead. “… we seek the meaning of life at each stage of life and we find some of it at each stage …” (Bruno Bettelheim)

ccording to the original story, the brave Peter together with his friends, the duck, the little bird and the cat, following exciting and educational adventures finally outwit the wolf which is evil incarnate. In Prokofiev’s wonderfully expressive music one can

observe the sound of instruments personifying the individual animals and humans. The performance emphasises the expressive power of music with playful choreography and spectacular visuality, personifying the animals and their characteristic behaviour.

veryone knows Sleeping Beauty, whether from the story of the Brothers Grimm, the Tchaikovsky ballet or the Walt Disney cartoon adaptation. However, looking behind the sweet figure of the almond eyed little girl, there is a less charming story revealing itself: the first blood, the hibernated girl, the sleeping court, the threat of the prick from the spindle, the alarming images of a dream that seems like eternity, the bewilderment on waking from a hundred-year-long coma, and waiting for a kiss that could save the world from emotions becoming bland. To fall asleep in the age of romanticism and awake in the 21st century. It is a frightening possibility. A classic tale the way we have never before seen it. Dreams, desires, sexuality: or let us look behind things in case a beauty is asleep there. The original version appeared in 1697 written by Charles Perrault. Tchaikovsky wrote his ballet in 1889. s it an ancient tradition, or a modern branch of art? Is it a contemporary genre, perhaps a popular entertaining dance, or a ballad in song? Does it bring emotions or stories to life? Which peoples have shaped or continue to shape its culture? Is it ritual Spanish folklore or a constantly changing mode of perform-

ance? Does it have a strict order, or is it an improvisational technique? Who created it, how did it develop? Does it show the virtuoso rhythms of Europe or the Orient? Those who discover “the harmony of contrasts” in flamenco will receive all the answers to these questions, in an unconventional dance performance.

hildren today experience an array of different stimuli. They are at home simultaneously with traditionbased children’s songs and games, tales of old, playing with cornhusk dolls as well as with the language of the computer, contemporary stories, the “Kinder Egg” and our day-to-day 21st century necessities. The performance tries to grasp this particular harmony through contemporary, children cantered poetry, rhythm games and with

the many, many songs and dances that exist. The changes that we experience within our lives affect the development of our children, thus influencing them through poetry. Csaba Fecske, Anna Kiss, Benedek Kiss, Dénes Kiss, Endre Kukorelly, Imre Oravetz and Kriszta Tóth approach today’s world of children through a unique visualization and sensitivity. Poetry and music is such an expressive form that it is indispensable to personal fulfillment.

ur Dance Theatre invites you to an evocative performance. The evening is a taste of 20th century Buenos Aires with dance and music. The world of traditional tango appears in the performance just like the modern tango fashionable nowadays. Through music and dance you are transported to a sultry summer night in Buenos Aires, where the special atmosphere of the tango makes the mood even hotter. Many years of experience in Buenos Aires provide the basis for the evening, during which the dancers present the different faces of the tango. Because this is the dance filled with most emotion, which can be passionate, melancholy, virtuoso or even cheerful. The deepest human feelings come to life for a few moments on stage in the dancers’ choreographies, which speak in the language of the tango. This is the most intimate and expressive dance. Johanna, Josip and Santiago's communicative compositions go beyond being “simply” tango, they present a true theatrical experience to the audience through the story taking place between the three of them. The mu-

sical background is provided by the Budapest Tango Orchestra, the special feature of which is that it was formed largely from tango dancers so they give a perfect interpretation of the original tango music. Their speciality is the bandoneon, the original accordion, which is the soul of tango music.

he characters, the story, the topics and the message of the deservedly world-famous piece, talk of eternal human characteristics. The positive features of the main character, Phileas Fogg, such as humanism, honesty, word of honour and a healthy spirit of competition, are human characteristics that our children and young people should be taught every day. During the trip around the world the piece introduces different cultures, life situations and a variety of dances in our interpretation to the audience. Dance is an excellent form of expression; the movements clearly illustrate universal emotions and messages. The non-verbal language of dance helps to introduce the diversity of the world, cultural characteristics and common human values. At the end of the tale, just as it should be, goodness prevails. It transpires that the aim is the journey itself and from all the options love is victorious, which our hero finds in the person of an Indian princess. he special occasion which makes it possible for a creative crew to stage two one-act pieces offers a special opportunity to juxtapose the two pieces as well as extracting their contiguous concept. Both pieces present the eternal, secret-dense struggle in the relationship between man and woman, seeking the basic truths of our human existence through it. Walking the paths of the soul the author is connected to the everyday events of his age. The turbulent social changes of the 20th century, the wild fury endangering hundreds of thousands of lives of the dark forces released

from the depths of the soul are inseparable from the basic idea of the pieces. It aims to present Bartók’s life-affirming truth and his belief in the purification and elevation of the soul despite these conditions. Creators of stage performances in the 21st century can have no other aim either than to remain faithful to the creative purpose despite the chaotic forces swirling around us, and present the love of two souls embracing each other through the way of a man and a woman to each other, which is capable of purifying the whole world. t’s been a dream come true when the creators of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble came across the freshsounding, popular, dynamic music of Nikola Parov filled with ancient themes. For this ethno music composed uncommonly with saxophone, drums and brass the choreographers have created the most dynamic, most power-

ful movements of the Hungarian folkdance, a real dance storm. From their collaboration was given birth this 21st century, creative dance theatre vision. A vision based on the essence of the region’s music and dance traditions taking the cult of the Sun as a basis in the creation.

óránd Zachár’s Lisztomania reveals a strange world to us, the first scene of which is the world of imagination, an angelic existence among the clouds, from which the renowned artist, the admired musical genius, descends to a space previously unknown to him. The artist Franz Liszt drops into our contemporary world, where a celebrity can outrival the composer admired and idolised in his own place. People don’t understand and don’t appreciate the personality or the art of our hero. Liszt, who is a “superstar” in his own age, stumbles incomprehendingly in situations unknown to him and extremely humorous for the audience. In the end he finds his companion, who might help him get his bearings in the mediacentred labyrinths of the 21st century. he framework of the ballet is a parlour game of Indian origins, which teaches LIFE itself in compliance with traditions. It cannot be played by just anyone, only those that the master of ceremonies considers suitable. The game cannot be given up, cannot be half-played or taken lightly. The game is not “fair”, not predictable: sometimes it is fun, sometimes annoying and baffling, but always ex-

citing and thought provoking. Each PLAYER reaches the finishing line providing he realises that the real goal is the game itself. It depends on the decisions of individuals as to what kind of experience they will have in the game. However, it should be noted that the game itself is a living being. It makes decisions, has feelings, can be influenced and often, indeed, is unpredictable.

We presented the first two pieces of our Living Martin Archive, with the titles Bonchida Three Times and Kalotaszeg. Following the trail of ethnographer György Martin (1932-1983) during his filming of dances, we now continue the series under the title Szatmár, thereby honouring the unrepeatable work of the great scholar. He and his colleagues organised large-scale dance collection trips in Hungary and in Transylvania, which were of crucial importance in the

history of not only Hungarian but also European folk dance research. Up to the 1970s they collected and archived the dance culture of the smaller villages in Szatmár to the very detail (they made dance films in over 290 villages). With their noble and excellent work they recorded the dances of the people living there, and now we face the task of providing an unforgettable theatrical experience by reviving this old and often forgotten but wonderful culture.

NATIONAL DANCE THEATRE – MAIN AUDITORIUM Bodies’ Philosophy Choreography Experiment in 2 Parts Szeged Contemporary Dance Company Sunday, March 17, 7 P.M.

“To inquire after the meaning or object of one's own existence or that of all creatures has always seemed absurd from an objective point of view.” (Einstein) Are our bodies, through our motions, capable of answering deep philosophical questions, as well as depicting emotions, human relationships, intensity and dynamics? In this ballet we have attempted to realize this double task, and we present each choreography in two interpretations. Once by itself, without any external tools or controlled content, only by watching the movements of the dancers and their relationships with each other. For the second time the dancers impersonate certain concepts, thus giving the choreography a completely different content, and the previously seen motions receive a more concrete meaning. It is not a philosophy of life, a world view or ideologies that we want to outline, since philosophy itself is different from these. We merely reflect upon arising issues

his piece analyses the great questions of life, death, love, perseverance and faith from the perspective of the individual’s responsibility. It is a parable of the word of honour, pledge, loyalty to oneself, perseverance, espousal of our undertakings and representing them through all difficulties and hope. It is about man’s self-sacrifice, about the path that everybody has to walk as an inevitable concomitant of human existence. It is about recovering

love from death. About saving love, i.e. passion. About the rejection of solitude, loneliness. About the impossibility of the lack of passion, about undertaking the tribulations of life, about their reward and the consummation of life. Two great icons of Yvette Bozsik’s also staged Orpheus and Eurydice, so this choreography is also a homage to them: it bows to and commemorates the work of Pina Bausch and Mary Wigman.

ommunication means getting into contact with people. It makes us possible to transfer knowledge, thoughts and feelings. Relationships, family, friends and individual. Simple life constantly renews itself and we cling to our relationships in order to belong to someone or something and to strengthen our identities; since people are social beings. We lose more and more things. Which is the moment when people and places begin to converge behind us? We settle down, we establish and build up our lives around us. We tread the same paths again and again, we try to keep the balance between things we lose, we cannot see, touch, smell, hear or feel and which constantly show up. The performance seeks answers to basic notions and challenges of human existence, such as distance, memory, making contacts, attitudes towards the space around us and the passage of time. The search focuses on relationship, family and the individual. he new poetry-dance evening of the company is an interesting experiment in the connection between poetry, dance and music, preserving our traditions but expanding them with contemporary, new poetry-dances. Mihály Babits was an intellectual partner to Valéria Dienes, whose 1915 poetrydance entitled Heavenly Play has been handed down from “foot to foot”. In a similar way, the poetry-dance by Mária Mirkovszky entitled Two Sisters, which was first performed in the 1920s, has also survived. "… they have created such

a natural mixture from Mihály Babits’s poems which express the most serious thoughts and from the art of movement, that we can feel that they naturally belong together. Dance belongs to poetry just as lyrics belong to the melody in other genres. In parallel with the words the poet verbalised, the dance artists tell with their motions. Though not without elements known from dance, its essence is not movement to the beat, but expressing thoughts, notions and emotions through movement. …" (Tibor Mészáros)

ertalan Vári, the Harangozó Award winning dancer and choreographer provides the audience with seventy minutes of pure joy with his performance entitled Variations. Variations is the amalgamation of different genres and styles such as the traditional Hungarian folk dance, tap dancing, hip hop, theatre and film and it equally shows the company as well as the individual. Bertalan Vári conjures his dancers onto stage like letting the jinn out of his bottle and there is no standing still afterwards – the experi-

ence extends to its fullest by using just a few sets, costumes and daily props, a mixture of music from different films and that of other bands. The performers will show the yet unknown sides of their individuality as well. The company as a hip hop fan, an acrobat, a lover, a freedom seeker, an imaginary pistol duellist; the company which is also able to sound a tin and dance with or without music with hats, umbrellas, drumsticks and a cajon proves its versatility and professionalism as the performance progresses.

You will see participants of competitions, or students who introduce children or young people to the different branches of dance at youth performances, and those graduating students who, in a few months’ time from the protective school will “dance” to the boards in domestic and international theatres and on stages. Together let us celebrate the theatre with dance in the Dance Theatre.

flag expresses intellectual, emotional and social relationships. Is a carrier of pictorial and colour formulations, of symbols. It is a medium with a ceremonial value. Their pictorial world designates and determines relationships. It has an effect on the intellect and on emotions. The pictorial flag, as a piece of art, is a depository of the essence, the content, principiálva a gondolatot. It shares with us the experience of belonging, the relationship with the age. It is the spiritual and intellectual freedom that determines the character of the pictorial flag, its relationship with the world, which it presents as a personal experience. “…you can speak! …you can call! … and wave… you can send a message of strife, power or miracle… just tell the truth! …and you will see the sun through the bleeding sky!…” Simonffy Márta president, Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists Opening on Wednesday, March 13, 6 P.M.

EXHIBITION IN GALLERY KERENGŐ Jazz Photos Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival – Bánk March 2013

“If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.” – Louis Armstrong "I'll play it first and tell you what it is later”. – Miles Davis “Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom” – Duke Ellington “Jazz is life, the glorification of human life. It celebrates the completeness of life. Its impossibility, its accidental nature, its greatness. Its meaning. Its inherent sexuality. Depth. And it deals with its essence… its very essence.” – Wynton Marsalis “Jazz is a musical style, which is characterised by blue notes, syncopation, swing and the application of parallel rhythms. The most important characteristic of the style is improvisation; the performers often play improvised solos or respond to each other’s playing. Its roots can be found in the style of expression of west Africans, in the AfroAmerican musical traditions (e.g. blues, ragtime) and in the music of European marching bands.” – Wikipedia What is jazz? The answer can also be given in photographs. Hundreds of applications arrived for the Photo Contest in the Spirit of Jazz announced at the Louis Armstrong jazz festival organised by the Foundation for Swing Jazz Culture, and the professional board of judges – Ferenc Markovics,
