PLAZA SERRANO AND ITS BOHO-CHIC ATMOSPHERE Ubicada en el corazón de Palermo, la zona fue cuna de escritores y artistas. Tras haber sido reciclada, se convirtió en un polo del diseño innovador con locales y ferias por doquier. Located in the heart of Palermo, the area used to be home to writers and artists. After being recycled, Plaza Serrano became a hub of innovative design with stores and fairs everywhere.

omo protagonistas de la modernización de Palermo Viejo, Plaza Serrano y sus alrededores hoy son el epicentro de la movida porteña. Su paisaje bohemio de casas antiguas y veredas soleadas fue reciclado hasta convertirse en un polo de diseño, donde proliferan bares, galerías de arte y locales de autor. Con estos nuevos vientos, en las últimas décadas el barrio y su plaza de cemento rejuvenecieron hasta parecer escenografía, aunque todavía entre sus pasajes y adoquines se percibe ese aire de antaño.

Ubicada entre las calles Jorge L. Borges (antes llamada Serrano) y Honduras, la rebautizada Plazoleta Julio Cortázar ha sabido ser reducto de escritores y, sobre todo, de artistas. De hecho, los fines de semana funcionan en su perímetro puestos de pinturas y esculturas, que se extienden a las áreas aledañas con arte callejero. Como si fuera una galería a cielo abierto, en las fachadas de negocios y viviendas pueden verse graffitis, stencils y murales.

Además, entre tiendas exclusivas de decoración, accesorios, muebles y ropa de marcas independientes y famosas, instaladas desde fines de la década del noventa, en “la placita” también se ofrecen artesanías, mientras que los pubs circundantes se transforman en ferias de indumentaria durante los sábados y domingos a la tarde.

La vanguardia e innovación en todos los rubros no excluye bares ni restaurantes. Algunos de ellos están escondidos, otros a simple vista, pero si hay algo que los mancomuna es que cada uno tiene su impronta, no solo en el estilo, sino también en sus tragos y gastronomía.

A

s the main areas of Palermo Viejo’s modernization process, today Plaza Serrano and its surroundings are the epicenter where Buenos Aires scene happens. Its bohemian landscape of old houses and sunny sidewalks was recycled to become the hub of design, where bars, art galleries, and signature stores proliferate.

Although in the last decades the neighborhood and the concrete park were rejuvenated to look like scenography, the old times atmosphere can still be found among its alleys and cobbled streets.

Located between Jorge L. Borges (formerly called Serrano) and Honduras Streets, the rechristened Plazoleta Julio Cortázar used to gather writers and mostly artists. In fact, on weekends some painting and sculpture stands spread in its perimeter and extend to the surrounding areas with street art. As if it was an outdoor art gallery, the facade of stores and houses feature graffiti art, stencils, and murals.

Apart from its exclusive stores, which opened at the end of the nineties and sell decoration items, accessories, furniture, as well as independent and famous clothing brands, the “little square” also offers handcrafts, while the surrounding bars become clothing fairs every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Bars and restaurants are not excluded from the avant-garde and innovative styles featured in all the other industries.

Some of them are hidden and others appear at first sight.

But they all share one thing in common—each one has its own signature, not only in their style, but also in their cocktails and gastronomy. 0

ntre miles de hectáreas de selva, las Cataratas del Iguazú irrumpen con la grandilocuencia de una orquesta. Declarados como una de las siete maravillas del mundo, los 275 saltos que componen el Parque Nacional ofrecen individualmente escalas y tonalidades diferentes entre los verdes y rojos altisonantes del paisaje misionero, pero en conjunto ciertamente forman una obra maestra única.

Percibir los sonidos de animales, admirar los colores de la vegetación y escuchar el eterno caer del agua, son los clásicos infaltables de este concierto guiado a través de un tren ecológico que recorre la selva y pasarelas que se acercan a las cascadas, armando dos circuitos: el inferior, que muestra los saltos de frente y desde abajo, y el superior, que brinda un panorama global desde una mayor altura.

Sin embargo, quien dirige la batuta aquí es la Garganta del Diablo. El estruendo constante de la corriente cayendo por sus 80 metros de altura hace vibrar hasta los sentidos menos despabilados. Desde un balcón panorámico, esta pared acuática (la más imponente de todas) baña en rocío a los visitantes, mientras encandila con su brillo y ensordece con su rugir.

A la contemplación pasmada de este recital no le escapa nadie. Ahora, si uno quiere conocer el detrás de escena y sentir la jungla en el propio cuerpo, se pueden encontrar alternativas para llevar un poco más al límite la experiencia sensorial. Escalar, 22 •

practicar arborismo o navegar en lancha son algunas de las propuestas que permiten adentrarse en las entrañas de este escenario.

EN EL AGUA. Una perspectiva particular de las cataratas es la excursión en lancha. En esta, la embarcación se interna a toda velocidad por el río Iguazú inferior en el medio de la jungla hasta llegar al pie de las cascadas. Si bien no se ingresa a la Garganta del Diablo, sí se siente la fuerza de los torbellinos de viento y agua causados por el salto Los Tres Mosqueteros.

EN EL AIRE. Una de las modalidades más originales para conocer la selva es el canopy o tirolesa. El método consiste en saltar por las copas de los árboles a 30 metros de altura a través de un sistema de arneses.

A la adrenalina y diversión, el paseo suma una visión única del manto vegetal en tanto todo se observa con la vista de las aves. A su vez, el rappel es otra forma de obtener una panorámica “desde arriba”.

EN LA TIERRA. Más allá de los múltiples senderos para hacer trekking, el terreno puede explorarse en jeep. Este safari por la selva dura aproximadamente dos horas y permite observar la fauna y flora en su estado original.

mong thousands of hectares of jungle, Iguazu Waterfalls burst into with the magnificence of an orchestra. Declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World, each of the 275 falls, which form the National Park, features different scales and tones among the grandiloquent green and red shades of Misiones’ landscape. All this together certainly creates a unique masterpiece.

Perceiving the sounds of animals, admiring the colors of the vegetation, and listening to the never-ending water fall are a must in this guided concert aboard an eco-friendly train that goes through the jungle and the footbridges near the waterfalls in two different circuits—the lower circuit, which offers views of the front and bottom of the waterfalls; and the higher circuit, which offers a panoramic view from a greater height.

However, the one taking the lead in this concert is certainly the Devil’s Throat. The constant banging of the current falling from a height of 80 meters shakes even the least awaken senses. From a vantage point, this acoustic wall (the most imposing of all) bathes visitors in dew-drops, while it dazzles with its glistening and deafens with its roar.

No one can escape from the surprising contemplation of this concert. If you want to know the behind the scenes of the waterfalls and feel the jungle in the flesh, there are many alternatives to take your

sensory experience a little beyond the limit. Climbing, canopy walking, or sailing on a motorboat are some of the options that allow visitors to go deeper into the heart of this scene.

BY WATER. The excursion by motorboat offers a special view of the waterfalls. The vessel travels at full speed along the lower branch of the Iguazu River through the middle of the jungle up to the foot of the waterfalls. Although it does not enter the Devil’s Throat, it is possible to feel the force of the whirlwinds and whirlpools caused by the Three Musketeers Fall.

BY AIR. One of the most original ways of discovering the jungle is canopying or ziplining. This method consists of sliding over treetops at 30 meters high through a system of harnesses. Apart from the adrenaline and fun, the activity offers a unique bird’s eye view of the green canopy. Rappel is also another way of enjoying a panoramic view “from above.”

TRANSBORDADOR OLD TRANSPORTER BRIDGE Atravesando el Riachuelo se encuentra esta estructura de hierro, también llamado “puente viejo” o “puente Nicolás Avellaneda”. Construido en 1908, este trasbordador cumplió durante años la tarea de unir la ciudad de Buenos Aires con la provincia de Buenos Aires. Hoy está en desuso. Al pie del transbordador, aún hoy se puede ver a los remeros que con sus botes unen ambas orillas, transportando la mayoría de las veces a trabajadores. This iron structure, that spans the Riachuelo, is also known as “Old Bridge” or “Nicolás Avellaneda Bridge”. Built in 1908, this transporter bridge was the first to link Buenos Aires City with the outskirts. Today the bridge is not used, but it is still possible to see rowers connecting both banks with their boats, mostly carrying workers.

It was founded in 1895 and it opened a year later. It comprises the most important collection of Argentina.

Its halls showcase artworks ranging from pre-Columbian pieces to Contemporary art. In 2011, the National Museum of Fine Arts rearranged the museographic design of its permanent collection. This curatorial script change was aimed at placing the Argentinean art of the 19th century next to the European art of the same period.
