OFTEN TOUTED as the “Queen of Connection”, Tania Usher is internationally renowned for her daring philosophies for uncovering an authentic success mindset. The tenacious Tania believes the only thing stopping people from reaching the success they crave, is their own self-doubt. “Entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful self-development journeys on which anyone can embark. around the world with bold and enterprising entrepreneurs making a difference…while having lots of fun. “Boring is out”, is Tania’s motto.

Tania understands this first hand. After years of living and working abroad, winning numerous international awards and building a successful executive career, Tania tamed her wandering soul and returned to Australia in 1999 to start a family. Within 5 years of leaving the jet-setting corporate world, Tania buried her baby boy, gave birth to two healthy daughters, became the sole provider for her family, experienced escalating credit card debt and was served home repossession papers.

An unstinting faith in her own ability, coupled with a hefty dose of courage, propelled Tania 8

dare to speak

dare encourages all entreprenerus to find their authentic voice and to speak without censorship. Each of us has something valuable to share, yet we all have different ways of expressing our stories, personal journeys, challenges and triumphs. Some tales are raw and juicy while others are coordinated and conservative…some are controversial. It’s this diversity which makes life rich. ENTICED BY EMPTY PROMISES. What a great idea to give us the opportunity to DARE to say what needs to be said! This is what I dare to share: Too many intelligent, beautiful , amazing women beat themselves up for being overweight and then get lured into the latest weight loss hype, forking over more money for a solution that is not going to heal what needs to be healed. Why do so many of us get enticed by the empty promises in a diet pill advert? Why do we purchase yet another diet book to gather dust on the shelf? Why do we keep chasing an elusive magic elixir when the answers and abilities already lay within us. And for free! dare to face the real issues causing you to over-eat, with self-love and compassion. dare to reject the hype of the diet industry. dare to know that you are perfect just the way you are, and if you would like to drop a few pounds, then dare to do it the intelligent way. - Jacinta Noonan, Success Coach, The Netherlands www.BigOnTheInside.com

SHARING LIFE'S CHALLENGES IS HEALING. I learnt at a very young age, through a group therapy class of young girls who had endured sexual abuse, that sharing life’s challenges not only enables self-healing, it also helps others heal. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community is key to my voice, that enabled me to create an international Web TV show while nursing my young son as he recovered from his kidney transplant. And it’s why I’m excited to be part of the dare community. dare gives me the chance to speak up as well as to connect with so many authentic thought-leaders around the world. - Melissa Groom, TV Host/Producer, Gold Coast www.ToddlersToTeens.tv

LIFE BEHIND THE LENS. As event photographer for the recent 21st Century Education Summit I glimpsed the private side of some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, including the King of corporates, Richard Branson. What did I learn from my time with them? They understand that a picture IS worth a thousand words as they recognize that effective digital branding can translate into millions of dollars. I discovered their secret for staying so energetic, despite tiring schedules, was the pure joy they feel from living their dreams and motivating others to do the same. I dare to get personal and intimate with my photography and understand charisma and fearlessness radiates through every image I’ve captured of these successful men and women of business. I am undeniably charmed by my subjects’ intoxicating X Factor and photography has taught me so much about my own life. Zahrina Robertson, Photographer, Sydney www.ZahrinaPhotography.com

Eight years later, I clawed my way back to life and found my old self bursting to return. I wanted to be able to go outside my door again without fearing that something bad would happen. When a fellow Rotarian, Diana Tacey, the director of an American charity called The Childlight Foundation, contacted me and asked if I would like to go with her on a Humanitarian Aid mission to Afghanistan, I accepted. One month after their arrest it was proven to the Thailand Embassy that the Danes had not stolen the gems but still the Lao government continued to hold the couple and insisted that they were still guilty of the crime. Daily torture was inflicted on the couple to sign a confession of guilt on the crime but they maintained their innocence until they were pardoned 10 months later.

In 1997, when most foreigners and many Chinese were escaping Hong Kong for fear of the China Handover, Darrin saw opportunity. Having honed his skills in Hong Kong’s top hairdressing salons, travelled to London and Europe for inspiration, participated as a stylist in TV, magazine and fashion shoots as well as in countless Asian beauty pageants, Darrin felt the changing climate was ripe for expansion. SOHO has since become the hottest district in the city for bars, restaurants and boutiques. A sudden 300% property lease increase inspired Darrin to relocate “One of the challenges with having a big vision is that when others see your success, they get the courage to give things a go. That’s often accompanied by a gush of followers which, in this explains Darrin. Going from a 50m2, 8 chair salon to a 300m2, 30 seat salon which included an open pantry, private rooms, music listening stations, artwork and designer furniture for sale and a tattoo studio was a huge leap. With space a prized commodity in Hong Kong, Darrin used his new salon to host exhibitions, functions, demonstrations and wine tastings. “You pay rent for 24 hours a day, so it’s wise to utilise the space for as many hours as possible”. Seeing a hole in the marketplace for product distribution, Darrin decided to again embark on yet unchartered territory and build a salon branded with its own product. Within three months he had two new salons running at 20% growth. Despite his success, Darrin’s vision was fading. “I felt that Hong Kong had become spoilt. Freelancers, who I regard as people unwilling to commit to their careers, were taking over the industry. You can’t have a business and rely on people with a vagabond mindset”. It was time to explore new markets. A regular traveller to Shanghai, Darrin

hecking the alarm was set for 5am, I climbed into bed. My phone alarm was the backup. I was apprehensive about what lay ahead, yet I couldn’t back out now. Everything was arranged. I needn’t have concerned myself about missing the 5am wake-up;; nervous adrenaline shooting through my veins kept me awake most of the night. Before my alarm even chimed its dawn melody, I gave up trying to sleep and crawled out of bed. By the time I ventured downstairs, the kitchen was abuzz with activity. The girls devoured bacon sandwiches while I pondered my fate. Too anxious to eat, I opted for a mint, which I’m told has calming properties.

It was time to leave. As the door closed behind us, my partner’s phone rang. “Oh no! Really. That’s a shame. When will you know?” was the audible side of the conversation. “It’s too windy, they’ve cancelled today’s jump” my darling man informed me. For two years I’d been sitting on a skydiving voucher, waiting for what I thought was the perfect time to jump. I’d been told the rush is amazing and the feeling of freefalling, while terrifying, is a buzz that “you just have to give it a go”. Fostering a fear of heights though, I was less excited. Since childhood, vertigo has been a real factor in my life. A family photo captures me red eyed after a reluctant and sobbing walk across a bridge scaling a dam wall. Nonetheless, I’ve experienced much in life to know that nothing will evict you from your purposeful path faster than succumbing to fear. So I convinced myself that experiencing the thrill and freedom of freefalling would be liberating. Most fears are never realised and do nothing other than burn up precious life energy - energy that could be used for more purposeful living. When you indulge in excuses for not doing 32

For some, the idea of skydiving is of no interest. It’s when you say, as I did for many years, “I don’t like heights so I can’t jump out of a plane”, that you have a choice to make. My choice is to face my fear head on by jumping 12,000 feet from a moving aircraft. Whether your fear is of spiders, your teenager’s

spaces or public speaking, the moment you allow it to occupy your mind, you’re embracing fear based living. Taking the leap to launch a unique online publication and naming it dare was the perfect catalyst to schedule my jump. After all, if I was going to interview daring entrepreneurs from around the world, I couldn’t let a little thing like a fear of heights get in my

way. However, often the universe has bigger plans for you than you have for yourself. I wasn’t meant to jump that windy morning. And that required another mindset shift. I had to go through the preparations, planning and self- encouragement all over again. And what about my plans for the launch of dare? That was affected,

too. It was time to course-correct. There are many times in life when our best laid plans require reassessment. When this occurs we have two choices. CHOICE #1: Let frustration and blame take the lead. your change of circumstance. CHOICE #2: Surrender to the process and embrace your next opportunity. So my desire to launch dare as I plummeted 200km an hour to earth was thwarted by high winds. Due to our planned family holiday, I wouldn’t be able to sechedule the jump for at least another month. I had to accept that my plan to combine the two wasn’t going to happen. MY DECISION: I’ll jump for issue two. MY CHALLENGE: To convert my fear of heights into an excitement for skydiving. Worry, anxiety and fear never serve you well. So while jumping on that early morning may have brought my “wonder what will happen” anxiety under control, my most powerful choice is to bring that fear under control within myself. The jump delay means I now have an opportunity to process my fear BEFORE jumping. And I’ve done that through another challenge. Stillness. In the often crazy haze of daily life, it’s easy to bypass so many opportunities to connect with your higher self, God, intuition, guides – whatever label you choose to use. But when you do stop;; ask;; listen;; the answers you seek will become clear. 34

build a ‘conscious business’ KIM CASTLE KNOWS HOW TO TAKE THE CONFUSION OUT OF possibility to reach money-making success. Originally, Kim helped Fortune 500 companies including IBM, General Motors, Domino’s, Hollywood Celebrity Diet, M&Ms, Disney Interactive and Paramount achieve unsurpassed profits with her unique branding and marketing strategies. Now, she’s passionate about helping entrepreneurs grow from idea to million-dollar-brand through ‘conscious business’ - a holistic approach to personal, social and financial freedom through business. TANIA: Do you feel your journey as a performer, actress and a stand-up comedian combined gave you a more soulful perspective on the world of graphic design and advertising? KIM: As a performer you make decisions on how you’re going to move people emotionally. I was making the same decisions when I was an art director and designer. When I got to Madison Avenue, I was very excited to be there. Yet what I quickly discovered was a lot of “smoke and mirrors”. We’d be working on an amazing multi-million dollar account, yet there was nothing underneath the work we were doing. A creative director would walk in the

room and point, “You, you and you, go off and come up with something that wins me awards. You’ve got three days.” It was just creative for creative’s sake. What I started to realize was advertising without a soul So I knew that I needed to take what I was learning with the big brands and teach entrepreneurs, people who are still connected to what they’re bringing to the planet through their business, and anchor it. Anchor it from a powerful place and then bring that power through the entrepreneur, that connection, through their business out into the NOVEMBER 2011

marketplace. That was going to be the new businesses of tomorrow. TANIA: In essence you’re taking traditional advertising and actually giving it a soul so it has a heartbeat, as opposed to just an image? KIM: Absolutely. We call it making business deeply personal. My joy is connecting entrepreneurs to the true power that lies in the very idea of their business and anchoring it with solid structure so that they feel fully expressed in a functioning, Advertising is evolving in tandem with how we’re evolving as human beings. And right alongside it is technology. It’s a very, very exciting time to be an entrepreneur. TANIA: You have a motto, “It’s all about the tingle.” Could you explain what that means? KIM: When you hand out your business card or attract people to your website, you need to tingle. That’s what people connect to. The tingle permeates every touch point that you connect to the world. How you market, how you communicate what you’re about. People aren’t buying houses or haircuts, they’re buying the tingle. TANIA: Can you give an example of what tingles and what doesn’t? 42

dare

NOVEMBER 2011

KIM: Everybody has a different tingle. I believe the tingle is innate in being a human being. Sadly many people have disconnected from their tingle. They ask “What’s my purpose? What’s my passion?” and they’re looking for answers outside of themselves. It’s not there. The tingle is in you, even if over the years it’s become shadowed.

TANIA: Is it easier for somebody tingle than somebody who already has an existing brand that they’re attached to? KIM: There are pluses and minuses to both sides, yet at the same time I think it’s easier if somebody is willing to realize their own power no matter if they’re just starting out or in 20 years from now. The big challenge as entrepreneurs is their idea is not tangible. I call it getting high. You get high on your

dare business

idea. It’s that tingle;; it’s the thing that gets you saying, “Hey, I’m going to write a book”. Because it’s not tangible, you want to rush to the market and validate your idea it. There’s a great quote. I think Steve Jobs of Apple and Howard Schultz of Starbucks both have a similar quote and I’m going to mush them together. Basically, they say you can’t ask the market what they want;; you have to tell them. So the challenge with an entrepreneur who’s just starting out is they don’t realize that part of their power and their they’re selling to the market. TANIA: Much business training suggests entrepreneurs begin by asking their target market what they want. So you’re saying that isn’t the best starting point? KIM: No, it isn’t. There is value in asking your market, but if you’re not clear about what you’re doing, you’ll

people say this and seven people say this, so I’m going to go with the seven”. You start to create it because you think, “Well, the market wants this, so they’re going to buy it.” No,

the market will buy what you communicate well. The market didn’t know that they wanted to buy iTunes or an iPad or an iPhone. TANIA: If it’s about what you communicate well, are you saying

strategy that tells people what they want? KIM: Exactly. You have the solution. You already have the product, the business. It’s already in you based on your experience and what you resonate with. When you give communication to it in an experiential way, then you also know that you have that solid core, the DNA, the soul of the brand and the way to communicate it, then we throw open the blinds. We face the market. We connect it to trends. We connect it to the different targets. You actually have to sell them your brand in your way. That’s what sets you apart and enables you to build a conscious business.

Lack of rights to land also affects women's access to food. If

In countries as diverse as Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Morocco, Zambia, Costa Rica, Poland and Estonia parents are paid 100% for three or more months maternity leave.

NOVEMBER 2011

TIP#1 THERE ARE ONLY THREE WAYS TO MAKE MONEY. The wealthiest people in the world – those who manage to stay wealthy – make their money in only one of 3 ways: direct property, direct shares or direct business. These are the only 3 legitimate means of creating wealth. TIP#2 DEAL DIRECTLY WHENEVER POSSIBLE. In my 20+ years of financial advising, I’ve learned that the people who make money from managed funds are fund managers - not clients. To

dare finance

create wealth, invest in direct shares (actual companies) that you can relate to and can read about in the papers. TIP #3 KISS YOUR INVESTMENTS (KEEP IT SIMPLE, SWEETHEART). Don’t risk your money on new technology or IT companies that may disappear in a flash. Stick with staple products like car tyres, razor blades, food, alcohol, copper and steel that have been around for centuries. These predictable old things consistently make money for investors, year after year. TIP#4 INVEST WHERE YOU SPEND. Look at where your cash is going, and then invest into those companies. Grocery store, bank, insurance company, mobile phone provider or shoe store; if you trust them with your monthly cash, you can likely trust them as an investor. You can also keep an eye on them, and if you notice any negative changes in service or organisation, you can sell your shares long before financial results are released. TIP#5 MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, CREATIVELY. The internet can help you create your own business. Even if you are working for an employer, you can start offering small services online.

Choose something that you’re good at and that you enjoy doing just for fun like personal shopping, sketching, fashion consulting, providing topical advice on wardrobes or your personal hobbies. List your services on sites like fiverr. com, tenyt.com, odesk.com and elance. com. Don’t expect to make millions or even thousands; just aim to make a little bit of spare cash which you can use to invest into monthly share parcels or a rental property. TIP#6 YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE SO GIVE ‘EM HEAPS. Whether you call it the ‘Law of Attraction’, ‘Karma’ or the ‘Law of Sowing and Reaping’; it works! Give a portion of what you make from your part-time business or your investment profits away; sow into your clients by sending thank you cards or adding a small gift with each purchase; invest in your workers - and if you’re the only worker then invest in yourself with a special treat for a job well done. H aving started life living on my

grandmother’s front veranda with only a backless wardrobe separating my mother and I from the outside world, I was born to live by Helen Keller’s creed “Life’s a daring adventure or it’s nothing”. Yet through life’s adventures, hurdles and excitements, I’ve learnt that success is not a solo project. It’s a journey that needs to be shared. Working together, you’ll accomplish far more than going it alone; when you surround yourself with authentic, energetic, and daring thought-leaders, you tap into a bold world of limitless possibilities. This is the world we’ve created for you at dare. It’s been an exhilarating quest pulling together our launch issue, and I’m excited to be connecting you with more heart-centred entrepreneurs next month. I invite you to make comments, share dare with your community and speak up… ...we’re listening. dare to live boldly.
