facebook.com/penarthview s the new Editor of Penarth View, I am excited to be taking over the reins from my busy husband Jim who will assist me now and again with writing a couple of features. I am very excited to be working on our local magazine in my local town after spending 15 years working all over the UK in radio, newspapers and magazines.. I would like to offer a warm welcome to our Summer Issue where we celebrate the good holiday vibe and happy news in the town. Many of you may have packed your bags and jetted off for a well deserved summer holiday but for those of us that are staying local there is much to do in and around Penarth. We have a good few articles about penarth people including artist Mel Gape whose work is influenced by all things coastal (page 6) and an uplifting interview about Coastguard crew member Gem Sawyer (page 26).

Love Penarth It is a small world, Penarth View received an email from Emma Jagger wife to Heart FM presenter Jagger, saying she thinks her son Mitchell was on the front cover of the Penarth View. A photograph of two young boys happily fishing and enjoying friendly banter on Penarth Pier Pavilion made it as the front cover. Once Emma had seen the photo she knew immediately it was Mitchel and his friend Jake. “They can be found most days with their fishing rods and tackle along the sea front” says Emma. As it happens the whole family spend

her ring back, it wasn’t any where to be seen. The ping on the pier floorboards was actually her wedding ring falling out of my pocket. The benefits of being on the radio – I did a little shout out on air to anyone walking along the pier to keep their eyes peeled for a wedding band. Sadly it wasn’t found. So you never know it still might be there glistening under the floorboards. Emma – we also love to walk the dogs, our

boat. I broke the news gently to Emma and named the boat after her, she was quietly excited and now we spend most days hanging out on the boat. Emma – time on the boat has become a family hobby. The boys are always off to clean it or just tinker about on it. I take the girls over to meet them with a picnic and we just have a giggle as a fmaily watching the world go by. Its a total escapism from our busy life!

What do you love about Penarth? Jagger – the people are exceptional. I just love the welsh people. They are so passionate about where they live and you certainly get a huge welcome from the people of Penarth. The town has a real holiday vibe to it. I am always taking guests and family members for lunch or for a walk along the sea front. Emma – I love the pier the most, the victorian influence wins me over each time. I am at my happiest when I’m with the kids and dogs throwing pebbles into the sea. Its a timeless place. A town full of nostalgia and it takes me back to my childhood.

What does your typical day in Penarth involve? Jagger - We will start with a trip to the beach. Followed by an ice cream on the pier. We wander down the promenade and watch the fisherman. Perhaps a long lazy lunch at the Pier Hotel and a cheeky glass of wine if the kids aren’t with us. As the town has everything you need we never feel we are without anything. If you live here you are so lucky, as it certainly has a lot of heart and soul!

TASTE OF PENARTH

AMAZING SPACES More than just a fast food hut that has received both good and bad comments over the years, the food kiosk once serving burgers and kebabs has had a well needed make over. Penarth View editor Tanya was intrigued to FIND OUT what was housed behind the wooden doors and met with the jolly characters AT Pizza Pronto. Business partners Simeon Rabiotti and Kevin Halborg who have not long collaborated are proud to be producing a delicious and truly traditional street food pizza business. This dynamic duo will no doubt put Penarth on the map for top class flat bread pizzas. I spoke to both gentlemen to find out a little more about their journey in establishing the Pizza Pronto brand. Kevin would you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your connection to Penarth? I was a commando in the Army and stayed in the Middle East to work with US military as a consultant for the past 10 years. During which I was the owner of this amazing space – perhaps more commonly known as the kiosk by the train station. While I was an officer for the Dubai Government I spent a lot of time travelling around London. This is where I was exposed to the street food scene including many visits to the popular Borough Market. So when I was home sat in Bar 44 having a beer I bumped in to Simeon and started to chat about the street food movement – where the idea for providing pizza in a street food style was born. After quite afew discussions, both myself and Si wanted to serve restaurant standard street food as a takeaway. We had a lot of fun over a 2 month period, discussing what and how we would get our new business

idea off the ground. Si the chef and Kevin the brand master decided to fit out the kiosk with a little help from the boys at the bottle shop serving quality fine wines and beers. Simone, please would mind telling me how you made the move from seafront restaurant to building an empire in the street food industry? My grandfather was one of the first italians to sell spaghetti in South Wales. Throughout my family I have aunties and uncles who have carried the tradition of proper italian cuisine baked in ovens outside. I have lived in Penarth for most of my life. I worked in the family business in Penarth. The restaurant was sold for re-development Times flies, but I started working in the catering industry from the age of 7. I learnt from the best and inspired by my italian family, particularly my Aunty who actually has a outdoor oven in her Wenvoe garden. I have experienced quite a variety of high profile occasions including the opportunity to cook for HRH Prince Charles, chef for the Queen and amazingly the Pope. So I have many years of experience working throughout the catering industry and many good stories from my time of being a chef at Wales Millennium Centre. So after chatting about the ideas with Kev that one evening in Bar 44, it seems I just love to work within the catering world and

embrace and support the independent businesses.

So why Pizza Pronto? We wanted to offer a fabulous service whereby each customer would have their pizza within minutes from placing their order. We use only the most freshest of ingredients and our flour comes from Italy. We have a very loyal and lovely fan called Olivia who bakes us italian biscuits in exchange for a kilo of our flour. She is the sweetest lady and we really enjoy the banter each morning she pops in. Our parmesan comes over from Italy by Aunty Lou, its a very special vegetarian parmesan – proof is in the tasting!

Simeon – Like Kev I love the coast, I was a member of the lifeboat crew for 20 years. There is a full spectrum of characters here and I like to think I can mix with anyone, especially when I’m in the local pubs from having a pint in The Clive to enjoying a Rioja in Bar44.

What is your unique selling point? We offer the best ingredients with each pizza, prepared and cooked with passion. We believe it will be a pizza in demand. It is all about the banter and we welcome the people of Penarth to pop in to say hello.

One thing is certain at the Bistro, it has a great ambience, it is like stepping out of Penarth and into a quaint little restaurant in Paris. The menu is a delightful mix

of familiar french cuisine and seasonal specials, all reasonably priced. Jim and I had starters Halloumi cheese with asparagus and vine tomatoes and baked camberbert. Followed by a mushroom, garlic & chestnut filo pastry parcel served in white wine & cream sauce for Jim and I had a fragrant spiced chicken breast with pineapple in a lightly curried white wine sauce both priced

The simple answer is “yes”, but it all depends on the detail. First of all, don’t just assume that you can’t get a mortgage, there are lenders that are sympathetic to such circumstances. The key thing is to be honest and explain to

ARE YOU AS PROFESSIONAL AS YOU THINK YOU ARE? CATHERINE RICHARDS IS A PENARTH-BASED INSURANCE ADVISOR FOR JELF INSURANCE BROKERS AND OVER RECENT MONTHS HAS NOTICED A WORRYING TREND FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES OPERATING WITHOUT THE RIGHT COVER.

Do you… OFFER YOUR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE TO OTHER BUSINESSES? RECOMMEND PRODUCTS OR SERVICES TO OTHERS? VISIT CLIENTS IN THEIR OWN PREMISES OR THEY VISIT YOU IN YOURS?

If you answered YES to any of the above, you need to have insurance in place to protect you from potential claims.

Through her work Catherine encounters a wide variety of organisations and believes that without adequate insurance protection for themselves and their customers they could be exposed to potential legal action. Professional Indemnity Insurance provides businesses with protection in the circumstances of error, neglect or omission whilst carrying out their professional duties. Which would include protection for incorrect advice, services or designs provided. If you offer any form of advice or a professional service (which the majority of businesses do), you are likely to be vulnerable if you make a mistake. Catherine said: “The question I always ask my clients is, ‘Could your business survive bad publicity or a claim made against your business or you personally?’ Not just in the press, Penarth is a small place and word of mouth can be just as damaging. “As always with insurance, the key thing is to think about the worst case scenario and then work out how you would deal with it.”

www.jelfgroup.com catherine.richards@jelfgroup.com 07841 213716 @insurepenarth

52

The team at Jelf know that running your own business can be a minefield but Catherine is well-versed in identifying problems and insurance pitfalls and can

offer prospective clients a free, face-to-face consultation to look at their current policies to check for any potential issues or savings. Catherine added: “It is extremely important to me that people take their own business seriously and make sure that they are covered if something goes wrong. We live in an ever increasing litigious society and our claims culture is dramatically changing. Sadly, people need to be extremely careful and well protected. “Professional insurance might seem like something that ‘other businesses’ need, but I struggle to think of anyone who would be exempt. As always, if in doubt, I would urge people to get in touch for a chat.”

Q: What do beauty therapist, designers, life coaches and shop owners all have in common?

A: They all need a form of business insurance to protect themselves and their business.

My love for VW cars is no well kept secret. I have driven a VW Golf for as long as I can remember and have also been the proud owner of a VW T5 transporter van but I still go weak at the knees when I spot a retro converted VW camper.
