Ray and Shel Talmy, record producer for The Who
Rock Roadie RAY comes to town! By Jim Brooks-Dowsett Ray Lovegrove is one of the most interesting people I have met in my home town of Penarth. Once we got chat ting he left me wondering if we should be writing a book rather than just an interview with so many great stories from the Rock n Roll years! I wanted to find out a lit tle more about the man who brought Jimi Hendrix for a pint at the Glendale hotel. Ray was born and bred in Penarth, his

INTERVIEW
e f i L Workis a Beach
Laura Sheldon a local teacher, mum to two wonderful boys and wife to Stanwell High geography teacher Rob Sheldon, has just launched her first children’s book. I met up with her recently to find out exactly how she manages to balance her exciting life working and living by the sea. Why do you love living by the coast?
I love living by the coast because there is always a destination point, somewhere to head to. A breeze for sticky summer days, a sunset after school and a leg-stretching walk after a day at the computer. I love the wild days too when the wind whips your hair and the children run because they have no choice and the cobwebs are well and truly blown away. What inspired you to start writing?
I always loved writing, even as a child, and when I saw a competition for a new Welsh children’s writer I felt inspired to give it a go. I entered the competition and was so excited to be shortlisted. This motivated me to finish the book quickly and several more ideas came to me during this process. I think it is the confidence you get when someone tells you that something

you have done is worth something, that is very motivating. I didn’t win the comp but was contacted by the publisher shortly afterwards to say they would still like to publish my story. Since then it has been a busy time of editing, emails and planning launches - exciting stuff ! What do you love most about being an author?
It is so satisfying to see my words in print, it’s a childhood dream realised. My other childhood dream was to be a prima ballerina but that ship has certainly sailed by. But the best thing is seeing children reading my book and listening to them talk about the characters. To them, characters in books are like their friends; they know how they think and feel and have an affinity with them. So when it’s characters from my mind, well, warm and fuzzy doesn’t quite sum it up.
Describe a typical day
There isn’t really such a thing as a typical day in my life and do you know what, that’s what I love about it. One of the best things about working with children is their open minds and unpredictability, so every day in school is very different. A day at home or out on adventures with my own boys often involves beaches, parks, walking, cycling or surfing (not me personally that last one) and I love my days with friends and family visiting my favourite book shops and theatres or if I’m very lucky, festivals. How do you achieve a happy work/life balance?
This is a tricky one. Being a teacher and SENCo means there are no end of things you could be doing, I’ve had weeks when I haven’t come up from under the paperwork mountains. I’ve learnt (still learning a bit) to prioritise and have a habit of stepping back fairly often to see
INTERVIEW
the wood from the trees. My family are the most important thing but that doesn’t mean I have to spend every waking moment running around after them. On the contrary I think it’s important to encourage the children’s independence and also let them see the personality behind the ‘mum’. I try to fit in exercise classes a few times a week and always find I have more energy for doing them. I love my book club, it’s a real solace, although it is turning into more of a wine, cake and book club. And now there’s the writing.. I would love to have more time to write. I suppose I just have to work out what I need to stop doing to fit it in!
ww.fireflypress.co.uk @LauraSheldon76
Which author inspires you the most and why?
Hard question. I love reading and always have so I don’t think I can pick just one author when there are so many who have had such influence on me. If we’re talking about children’s books then I’m going to go for a very popular choice - Roald Dahl. His imagination and the way he weaves a story has captures the attention and hearts of children for many years. How wonderful to be responsible for encouraging a lifelong love of reading. My sons and I have been reading Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton too which completely crack me up. Another favourite is Frank CottrellBoyce, who’s book ‘Framed’ is just the best modern children’s book. There’s a bit of everything in that one. What is the one piece of advice you would give to a budding author?
Enter competitions. It’s very hard to get your manuscript picked out of the slush pile and even securing an agent is highly competitive (I loathe spending precious time writing letters trying to ‘sell yourself’), but competitions can provide excellent opportunities.

My most cherished beach essential has to be my men: Rob, Tom and Charlie. They are great company at the beach as they always find funny things to do. Beach Olympics is something Rob always talks me into (and I can proudly announce I am the current reigning women’s champion - any challengers welcome), Tom is just starting to catch surfing waves on his own which is amazing to watch and Charlie goes off into Charlie land and hunts down the wild animals (crabs). Food is also an essential, everything tastes better at the beach (as long as you don’t get sand in it), whether it’s fish and chips, ice-cream, a bbq or well-earned sandwiches when you’ve walked for miles and you’re really starving even though it’s only 11.30. The Secret to a Stress Free Christmas
Few of us have the time to cook a Christmas meal worthy of Masterchef each year. And while we all love the idea of family and friends coming over for dinner, the preparation and cooking of a festive feast can escalate into a time-consuming and expensive stressful mess. HD_logo_final.indd 1
COOK was first established 18 years ago, its founding principle was to make food using exactly the same techniques and ingredients that a good domestic cook would use at home, so everything looks and tastes homemade. Today, nothing has changed and COOK continues to make its meals by hand at its kitchen in Kent. As proof of the food’s hand-prepared nature, the name of the individual chef who cooked each dish is printed on the packaging. The Cook shop on Wellfield Road has been open since June 2011. The business is a franchise and is run by Liz Smart and Karen Purchase. They were both teachers but discovered Cook food and were so impressed by the food they decided they had to introduce it to people in Cardiff !
The philosophy of the business? As well as providing top quality food at the best price that looks and tastes homemade (what’s even more remarkable is that all the meals are frozen and go straight from your freezer into your oven or microwave). We also pride ourselves on offering good service, so as well as a friendly smile and being offered a sample of the food when you enter the shop, we will also pack your bags, offer to carry your bags back to your car and try to help customers in any way we can.
Why do you think people shop here? We find as soon as customers taste the food they want to try more as they realise how good the meals taste. We have some wonderful staff who make customers feel valued and there is always a happy atmosphere in the shop.

Efficient and Warm Using a wood burner can lower heating costs of the average family household by £400 per year. Wood burning stoves are highly efficient, running at up to 87% efficiency compared with up to 25% for a traditional open coal fire. Heating a room or supplying hot water have always been options but more and more people see wood burning stoves as a lifestyle choice too.
Visit our showroom on Penarth Road to see the new in-house bathroom
Picking a stylish stove can transform your living space. Whether you live in a compact urban home or cosy country cottage, both traditional and contemporary stoves work equally well in either. INTERVIEW
Love Penarth Cardiff-born Neil Francis, a Cardiff Devils man for more than 25 years, is now director of hockey at the very same club after a takeover this summer by a consortium of businessmen from Calgary, Canada. Headed by owner Steve King, these gentlemen, all massive ice hockey fans, had always dreamt about owning their own team. Their connection through Todd Kelman, previously Belfast Giants general manager and now the new Cardiff Devils MD, was eventually brought together by Neil and Ice Arena Wales. I met up with Neil to chat about his love of Penarth and the exciting new role he has ahead of him at Cardiff Devils. What is your connection with Penarth? “I have been living here for nine years. I bought my first house here which I still live in with my wife and two young children. I love the town and everything it has to offer, and anyone who comes to visit our family loves Penarth. My teammates at Cardiff Devils visit here all the time. The majority of them live in Cardiff Bay and when they pop over for lunch or coffee they all comment about how cool the town is.”
32
Penarth View
What do you love about living in Penarth? “It has to be how friendly and approachable the people of Penarth are. There is a sense of real community. I am always bumping into friends and local business people I know like Marcus from David Lush Butchers, Simon from Adam Framers and Mario from Lazarou. My children love all the parks whatever the weather. Walking to the sea front is always a fun past time for our family – especially the walk through Alexandra Park.”
What does your typical day involve? “One of my full time jobs is working for Black Horse bank as a product manager from Monday through to Friday. Then
my second job, as director of hockey at Cardiff Devils, involves working every lunchtime, evening and weekend, especially throughout the ice hockey season. It is a very busy schedule filled with a variety of challenges but I am in my element. Every weekend there is a home game and an away game, so I could be at the ice rink from 5.30pm until 10.30pm on Saturday, and then leave my house at 7am Sunday morning and not return until 6am the following morning – especially if we are playing somewhere like Edinburgh. I manage to get quality time with my children and lovely wife after work, when we might go to Belle Vue Park for a play, home for dinner and then a bath and story time before I start working again.”
INTERVIEW
When you get a moment of relaxation where in Penarth do you like to visit? “I manage to get quality time with my children and lovely wife after work. We might go to Bell Vue Park for a play on the swings or if it’s raining we love to hang out in the children’s section of Penarth Library. I tend to go to the Ocho Lounge for a drink with friends or dinner with my wife and kids or breakfast at The Busy Teapot to see Martin and Ade.”
What does your role at Cardiff Devils involve?
Dates not to be missed
“I basically oversee everything involved with the hockey side of things rather than the business issues. I report to our managing director Todd Kelman who is a very hands-on director. Todd is the best there is in the ice hockey industry and I have helped him both settle into Cardiff and meet local business people.
6th & 7th December Cardiff Devils against Belfast is usually an electrifying match.
27th December Cardiff Devils against Coventry is always a blast!
Another of my responsibilities is helping with recruitment of key members of staff and players. I appointed player/coach Andrew Lord who is in charge of the training and management of the players. So all in all I liaise between both Todd and Andrew to help keep the smooth running of the Cardiff Devils operation. Everyone in the new management team are in it for all the right reasons; they love the game. As a team we have promised to put on an entertaining experience on and off the ice and feel that if we do that the results will follow.”
Tell us a little about the exciting game of ice hockey for those who have never been to a match. “Ice hockey is the fastest team game in the world. It is a very entertaining sport which is especially geared towards offering something for all the family. Todd is very driven to encourage families to enjoy the match from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. The environment at the arena is very welcoming, offering pure good fun.”
What is the update with the new arena? “Ice Arena Wales is well on schedule to open next July ahead of the new hockey season. On a daily basis new elements of the arena are being built. It is certainly taking shape! The arena will include a twin-pad which means two ice rinks; one dedicated to public ice skating and new activities like curling, and the second arena will be for the ice hockey matches and figure skating competitions. It is likely to be the most modern ice house facility in the UK which will also be home to a dance

Victorian Home in Penarth - a case study Everyone is different and every project throws up different challenges. The challenge for this young family was how do you ensure that you get a superb kitchen, when you live a busy and bustling life in London and you and your family are moving to the quiet leafy suburbs of Penarth where you are renovating a Victorian house? Simple – use your Mum as the Project Manager and the flair and flexibility of Chalkhouse to meet the time, cost and design challenges. Everyone knows that budgets are notoriously difficult to control in major building projects, particularly renovations. So what do you do when you’ve always dreamed of having a fully handmade kitchen but your budget is being dissipated by unforeseen building problems? Talk to the experts to help you sort it out! By working closely together, and with the odd three-way conference call, the important decisions on the kitchen layout and specification were made to create a beautiful and functional kitchen that came in on budget, without any compromise on quality. A large open plan space was created by

knocking through two rooms to create a spacious cooking/eating/sitting area for the whole family. Ceri designed a simple, classic Shaker kitchen, with clean lines that really complements those quintessential Victorian features like wide doors, tall skirting boards and ornate cornices. Setting the central positioning of the Aga and the symmetrical low level cabinets either side accentuated the beautiful stained glass windows as a key feature in the room. The large central island, with sink, is set conveniently next to the family dining area so everything works beautifully together to provide an attractive living space that also works superbly for this young family. “Yes I am thrilled - The kitchen will no doubt be the piece de resistance – Andy, the workshop manager and Owain appeared to be taking such care and I’m sure their attention to detail is so important to the end result. Please thank them from us. I’m very pleased we asked Chalkhouse.....” Mrs J, Penarth

The same attention has been paid to the rear of the property, with superb landscaping complimenting the lovely natural space to provide travertine terracing as well as a large lawned area. There are extensive trees beyond the rear of the garden and this ensures that the property is located in one of the most private areas in the town. Just a short stroll from the Cliff Path and Esplanade, the property is also well placed for access to schools and the town centre.

Amazing Spaces
Its ever Sew Lovely!
STYLE LIFE
A local couple from Penarth, Carol and Conrad have had a fabulous first year running their popular business Sew Lovely. Tanya BrooksDowset t popped over to their amazing space for a coffee to catch up with the dynamic duo. Why open a sewing shop in Penarth? “I have a degree in textile design and experience in making wedding dresses, home furnishings and home crafts. During the past two years I have been busy teaching sewing classes from my own home to all ages. It was when I ran a small stall in Happy Days, Cowbridge that I first enjoyed the retail experience. It became so successful I decided to look for a permanent retail space in Penarth. Within weeks, Conrad and I had signed the contract on a retail shop on Glebe Street.” What can we expect from your amazing space Sew Lovely? “We offer a very personal service with a variety of small sewing classes. There are tailor made workshops for all ages from 8 to 88. No matter what age you are sewing can be so much fun and a very rewarding hobby. We offer classes for the complete beginner to the more experienced sewist. There is a good selection of haberdashery items and an amazing range of fabrics. We have seen a popular demand for vintage clothing also, especially for children.” I hear you have lots of regular customers. “Ys we do, there are a few characters that visit us each week and we have made some fabulous friends since we opened. One of our lovely customers is Tracy JL. Tracy says “I came to Sew Lovely as a complete beginner, my Mum had bought me a sewing machine for my birthday which has lived in the loft for 2 years. The beginner lessons at Sew Lovely were perfect, I was shown how to thread my machine and the first week I completed a gorgeous love heart pin cushion! I was thrilled! After the first set of lessons I had made the pin cushion, a piped sewing machine cover, a zipped make up bag and an envelope cushion. I then went on to the advanced course and have since made all sorts of things from an Alice in Wonderland dress to a memory quilt using my daughters old baby clothes. At the moment Carol is teaching me to make a dress for a special wedding I am going to. Carol and Conrad are amazing, they are
incredibly patient and the environment is really creative and relaxing, I have met so many lovely people through my courses and everyone in my family will be getting home made gifts that I have sewed this Christmas.” What sewing workshops are available this Autumn and Winter? “We have a beginners class, improvers class and following a commercial pattern workshop. We have been flooded with enquiries for our Christmas workshops which will include learning to make a Christmas advent calendar, Christmas Stockings and Christmas bunting. There is also a really cute workshop on how to make a super hero cape for the kids. Not forgetting the more traditional classes which include pin-board making, our Friday night quilt club as well as 1-2-1 coaching.” What is the plan for 2015? “Sew Lovely will be offering a selection of new funky events including hen parties, where you will have the choice to make bunting or knickers with the option to bring your own champagne. We are taking orders now for these parties.” What is the recent community news from Sew Lovely? We were really excited to be involved with Belle Vue Park Centenary event and we are also working with the local Red Cross Charity Shop whereby we are in the process of making a handmade quilt for their Christmas raffle. What else do you offer in this amazing space? “We service sewing machines as well as selling brand new Singer machines and overlockers.” What Christmas promotions do you have available? “Sewing machine with lessons for the reduced price of £250 valid until 24th December 2014 but can be redeemed after Christmas - the perfect gift for a potential sewer!” Penarth View

Classic Car Classics by Tanya Brooks-Dowsett
How time flies! Three months have passed since I was chatting with Matt at Victoria Garage about his passion for classic VW cars and vans. In the time since his last appearance on Penarth View, Matt has been busy working on two particular VWs: the Type 3 and the 1971 Campervan. So I caught up with him to hear about how the refurbishment on both vehicles is going.
How are the cars looking now?

SOCIAL LIFE Penarth Northern Soul Club
Penarth Northern Soul Club is brought to you by Shelley Norton and Liam Curtin, both Penarth residents and friends united by a love of music.
“The launch of Penarth Soul Club in September was a huge success and we were blown away by the scale of the response. We knew it would be popular and we had our fingers crossed that enough people would come so there was a good atmosphere. But we never could have predicted a full dance floor by 8.30pm! There was a lovely combination of die hard Soul fans dressed up and with all the dance moves and then those just bopping along to great music. And young and old alike. All united by a love of soul music.” “After the launch we were inundated by requests for running the night more often but we feel that every other month gives us 6 weeks or so to plan and promote and time to build up that excitement again.”
Next Soul Club - November 15th... with guest DJ’s Private Britton and Baz from Bristols Dirty Casino. The Ex Service Mens Club is a great venue for Northern Soul dancing with their sprung wooden dance floor. Everyones welcome but arrive early to avoid disappointment! Doors open 7.30pm and entrance is £3 on the door.

SOCIAL LIFE Coffee Morning Society 40th Birthday Celebrations!
In the summer of 1974 Bev House, Jenny Rosser and Pam Dodd met for a coffee. Soon after the first two “coffee babies” were born and have recently turned 40. Barbara Godfrey, Carol Ham, Pam Pritchard, Jane Thomas and Sue Gape joined in and more babies were born. The group has grown over the years and now totals approximately 20 ladies. Every Wednesday morning these ladies meet at each others’ houses for coffee, cake and occasionally a glass of wine! The “coffee babies” have spread spread all over the country but remember with fond affection the coffee mornings. Marriages and births have swelled the numbers of this extended coffee family and on Sunday 24th August everyone got together to celebrate 40 years of coffee morning and friendship.
An evening with top Michelin starred chef, James Sommerin.
Westbourne brought together speakers from top universities across the UK to meet with parents and students to discuss how to get in to the best universities ... all the while soaking up the relaxed atmosphere of Mr Sommerin’s new restaurant on Penarth Seafront and sampling some of his unique, award winning cuisine.
