Downhill Derby Returns... The Penarth Summer Festival sees the return of the downhill derby this year, after being called off last year due to health and safety concerns. So after much protest, it’s back and bigger than ever. In the exciting run up to the event, I interviewed a long running and popular participant of the derby – Mark Martin.
What did you think about the derby being removed last year? I thought it was a real shame. I was particularly worried that it would lose momentum, but it looks to be a very successful come back. Your cart ‘The Wobly’ has been an icon of the derby for many years. How long does it take to build the carts? Quite a long time, we have to use practice designs first to make sure its right. Overall, it probably takes three months or so. I try and spend an hour on it every day. How has health and safety changed the derby since it started? The organisers have always made the derby careful and safe for all of the participants. However, participating in the derby is always a risk, and the odd crash makes the event, if it was too anodyne it would be boring, but overall it hasn’t changed much. How does it feel before the race? It is nerve wracking, there’s always a risk that the cart could turn over and crash, you never know what is going to happen. By Charlotte Morgan

Lifestyle I was asked by the Red Cross to do some styling for the Manager & Assistant Manager as a profile raiser for Red Cross week during May. The brief was to come up with two different looks, using stock donated to the shop. We went for ‘Nautical’ and ‘Afternoon Tea’ themes. Initially, I was concerned that I wouldn’t find anything suitable, or that would fit well enough, but I was pleasantly surprised. I actually had to narrow down the outfits as I had sourced an amazing selection. I wasn’t hunting for any designer pieces, as I like to show women that you do not need to shop at that level to look fantastic. However, I couldn’t refuse using a pair of Ralph Lauren pumps or a beautiful navy Longchamp day bag! By using these pieces it illustrates just what amazing gems you can find in our local charity shop.
Most importantly, the girls were relaxed in their outfits, as these were selected to compliment their unique style personalities. I like to establish ‘how’ a client likes to dress, for them to be able to feel themselves.
After assessing Gemma and Priscilla’s body shapes, natural colouring of skin tone, hair and eyes, I ensured that the outfits complimented them in every way.
This ensures that I am styling for the client, not on the client. Overall, we had a great styling session with lots of fun, which resulted in two very happy and stylish ladies!!

ince taking over Penarth’s independent bookshop last September when Anne & Tony Hallett retired, Mel Griffin’s feet have hardly touched the ground! As well as a new name the shop has new signage, new lighting and an updated range of stock encompassing fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children in both English and Welsh. Griffin Books is also well known for its interesting range of greetings cards plus of course maps, CDs and sheet music.

the future. “I’m already hosting a monthly book group in the shop, and plan to start a children’s book club and toddler storytelling too”, she said. “We’re also launching Late@GriffinBooks - monthly evening opening for those who love browsing a bookshop but can’t easily get here in working hours.” Mel is closely involved in the annual Penarth Book Festival, which this year runs from 12th to 18th October, and hosts regular author events throughout the year. “Recently we held book signings with ex-Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell and leading political analyst Professor David Marquand”, she commented, “and I have some exciting names in the frame to visit the shop in the coming months.” So do pop into Griffin Books when you’re passing - you’re sure of a warm welcome from Mel and her friendly team!

Ysgol y Deri
Last November a new super school was launched, Ashgrove, Ysgol Erw’r Delyn and Ysgol Maes Dyfan special schools were amalgamated into Ysgol y Deri. It caters for students aged 3 -19 years old with a range of learning and physical needs. I was minding my own business at a childrens party when Jamie Woodland mentioned some events that were being planned at Ysgol Y Deri. Like so many others locally, I was aware of the school from recent press releases but couldn’t exactly describe what the school specialised in. Obviously, I was keen to find out more from Jamie (physical curriculum co-ordinator) I was invited over to the school for a viewing, to meet the teachers, OT team, therapists and children and find out what we could do to help as a community. The moment you arrive to effectively is the biggest and possibly longest car park in Penarth you feel a sense of warmth. The sweeping drive curves up towards Ysgol Y Deri and then onto St Cyres where these two fabulous schools are happy neighbours. Once inside the school reception area, which is state of the art, you are greeted with a happy welcome. The school is bursting with a colourful, bright and happy atmoshere. Jamie and Aimee greet me with huge cheery smiles and cant wait to give me a guided tour.

I couldn’t believe the sheer size of the school. It is so spacious and as it happens Chris the headmaster did mention that he is actually on the lookout for local artists to fill their walls with art. We walk and talk from class to class meeting fabulous teachers and nurses who really do deserve an award for all their love, care and attention. As we walk through busy coridors I learn about the fabulous facilities available to the children from hydro therapy pool, trampoline hall and the endless metres of hoist tracks without which the children wouldnt be able to enjoy half the activities on offer at the school. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Penarth Summer Festival and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this very special event. Once again, this year’s festival programme contains enormous variety and quality with something for everyone to enjoy, including exhibitions, live music, cinema, beach treasure hunting and more. The festival culminates in Carnival Day on Saturday 11th July with its spectacular air and sea displays, the return of the Downhill Derby and, of course, the Firework Finale. All these truly wonderful events could not happen without the strong community spirit that exists in Penarth and our amazing volunteers who give so freely of their time. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to you all on behalf of the Town Council. I would also like to thank all the members of the Emergency Services for the fantastic support you give to all the activities in the Summer Festival but also for the wonderful work you do throughout the year. Finally I would like to thank our Town Council

The names of the rooms are being decided upon, something you think would be quite simple has become quite a task! The essence of the rooms are primarily for people coming here to dine and then wishing to relax, if you want to stay then you will feel welcomed to stay. We are offering a very homely and relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast will be served downstairs in the restaurant offering

There are plans in place for another food demonstration. We are getting ready for the Penarth Summer Festival. One of our priorities will be getting out and about in Penarth and looking forward to working in partnership with local businesses like Penarth View, Lynchpin Media Wales, ACJ and Pizza Pronto. What did you feel when you launched your first restaurant in Penarth? Why did you choose to locate in Penarth? I was excited and apprehensive in equal measures. I’ve wanted to open my own restaurant for at least 10 years. I have been looking all over the UK at a variety of venues. I had the option to buy The Crown but I was keen for a fresh start and a new challenge and I certainly got that! When I came down to Penarth to view the site it was a lovely sunny day, I was sold on the view. What ever the weather there is something inspirational about Penarth. It’s the perfect place to bring up your family and being here makes me happy as I see much more of my children.
They have embraced Penarth, they love the beach and relaxing with Louise and I at the restaurant What is the best thing about being a chef? Being creative, no day is ever the same. The fact I’m always meeting new people is the best part of being a chef and a fair few of our regulars have become really good friends I would just like to take this opportunity to say thanks for the support from all our customers both locally and from a far, it’s been a real pleasure meeting you and I look forward to seeing you at the restaurant again soon.

Hamptons Music & Dinner Evenings Without doubt Hamptons has a wonderful vibe when attending one of their themed music and dinner nights. I was invited to one of Hamptons regular Music & Dinner Evenings - showcasing Shirley Bassey Tribute singer (aka Julia Martin). From start to finish it was a brilliant evening. Just like the cafe during the day the staff greet you with the best happy smiles. Hamptons looked completely different from the daytime with clever use of the venue space and staging which made for a great atmosphere. On arrival we were served wine while we chatted amongst the other guests. The food was served in between the music set - a total of five courses and it was really superb. I have never been disappointed by the food during the day so wasn’t surprised that the evening meal was anything but first class.

We started with a sharing platter that included courgette, feta and mint terrine; tomato and basil tartlet; mushroom fritter plus sweet and sour peppers. I really enjoyed having a selection of exquisite tastes where all the different flavours complimented each dish perfectly. This was followed by expresso cups

of golden beetroot and coriander soup - a new one for me but it really was yummy! It was evident that all of the guests really enjoyed the fun and upbeat songs from the exceptional Shirley tribute in between the courses. Julia performed many of the tracks and the most fun element was the way she interacted with the audience, she made conversation with every individual with such grace. She even invited some up to sing and dance alongside her. The main course was absolutely delicious which included a herb crusted cod fillet served with warm potato and a roast onion, fine bean and grain mustard salad. Shortly followed by a delightful homemade rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice cream. With coffee we then had a scrumptious sharing platter of homemade desserts comprising of chocolate and date brownie; citrus cheesecake and raspberry pavlova. At the end of the evening lots of people were chatting and soaking up the atmosphere - it was brilliant to see the owners taking part and enjoying themselves with the guests also!

I caught up with Shan who is the owner and executive driver for her business Shans Wales Tours to find out about her tours and how wonderful a day in the life as a chauffeur can actually be. What was the reason behind why you started your business Shans Wales Tours? I had spent a long time in Education, I still teach a little but wanted something new and a little bit out of the box, I was lucky enough to work for Windsor Cars Where Rhys taught me the ropes of driving a taxi. I felt that I could create a different business model; inspired by the people I know, the Magic of Wales and my love of places, people and culture. And the rest is literally history! Describe a typical day in the life on tour? My days can start early and end late, the only thing that’s guaranteed is that nothing is ever the same - from the tours to the type of clients.

I tend to wake up at six and if there is enough time then I like to prepare with a bike ride along the Bay or through Cosmeston. I have the car to prepare and notes and routes that have been prepared in advance to revise and tweak . My days can be very fluid as I am constantly monitoring the client experience and making sure that they are receiving an outstanding service and seeing exactly what they want to see! This means we can end up in some great locations. Which is your most favourite tour? Aside from my Ghostly Vale Road Trip which allows visitors a unique experience travelling through the Beautiful Heritage Coast, my favourite destinations tend to be the very quirky historic and picturesque locations. I love Hay on Wye and the Black Mountains, Abergavenny, Llaugharne and London. But just when I think I know it all I get a client who wants something totally different, so my new favourite destinations are Caerwent and the Waterfalls of Neath. Who has been your most interesting passenger? Discretion is a big part of my business. I drive for a fascinating group of people who in very different ways have given me some amazing experiences including eating Wotsits and tuna sandwiches in the porch of Buckingham Palace and tracing ancestors in the middle of the night

Someone asked me who was my most difficult client and I have to say I have never met one. I am so lucky since doing this, I now have pen pals all over the world and a local client base who are a real joy to me. Which are your top 3 tours? No tours are ever the same but I do find that some destinations are revisited with uncanny frequency, Tintern Abbey is ever changing and fascinating and very moving. London days out are very popular and I think the Ghostly Vale Road Trip for me is a favourite as I am always on the lookout for new stories. What new tours do you have planned? I am currently developing a Bride and Mother
of the Bride shopping package which will take my guests to the most exclusive hat, shoe and clothing shops and a great quality restaurant to create that special feel that clients look for. The package will showcase the best in Welsh style, craft and food. Tell us about some of the amazing views you have experienced I think Jude Law was my most recent amazing view at the Hay Festival, but my favourites have been; The pitch at Parc y Scarlet’s - being taught about Rugby by the legend Phil Bennett thus confirming my allegiance to the Scarlet’s the Historic Welsh team, Driving through the gates into the inner courtyard at Buckingham Palace. And I must admit I am a bit of a port and airport enthusiast - I love Heathrow!
