PROGRAM NOTES
Legacy Square is a piece for large percussion ensemble in three main sections, each involving a melody in slow-moving notes coupled with an active accompaniment. The rousing march-like opening features a swirling background based on the Andalusian cadence (or Flamenco progression) with a long, soaring melody in the metal keyboard instruments. The mysterious second section is more chromatically dense, with a new melody presented in an almost heterophonic texture. The third section is a more grooveoriented take on an ostinato background with an overarching melody introduced in the previous section. The melodic treatment gradually increases in intensity and activity, leading up to a return to the opening material for a lively, dynamic ending.
