PROGRAM & PERFORMANCE NOTES

Motion No. 1 is the first duet within a series of works for percussion duo. It began as a study of rhythmic passages split between two players using a relatively small set of instruments, and its initial success sparked the creation of a series of percussion duets. Using only two instruments—a bass drum and a pair of bongos—the goal of Motion No. 1 was to create melodic fragments and rhythmic motives that were then split between the two performers, hocketing both the primary and secondary material, challenging two individuals to act as a single unit.

A few notes on performance:

• The piece can use either a concert bass drum or a kick drum. If using a concert bass drum, muffling is recommended for rhythmic clarity of the 32nd-note passages.

• The bass drum and bongos should be placed between the players, with the bongos to the right of player two and to the left of player one. With this setup, only one bass drum and one pair of bongos are necessary, encouraging both the aural and visual components of two performers acting as one.

• Please take note of the tenuto markings over bass drum notes. These should be clear and articulate while not too heavy, allowing the transfer of hocketing 32nd-note passages to be highlighted and precise but not accented.
