PROGRAM NOTES

A drum corps style marching cadence combined with Latin (Cuban) rhythms of Rumba/Guaguancó are the featured elements in the duet Streetmosphere. The configuration of the horizontal marching bass drum, mounted cowbell, and use of linear writing takes conventional marching drums and turns them into a mini-percussion ensemble. In addition to being performed as a duet, Streetmosphere can be adapted for use as an actual marching cadence for any size marching ensemble.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

Snare drum:

• The laid-back marching tempo creates the challenge of playing rhythmically in time while matching the linear phrasing of the bass drum voice. Double stroke rolls, for example, may have a tendency to rush, producing a tighter, almost crushed interpretation. A helpful tip is to remind yourself, “It’s not as fast as you think it is.” This approach can aid in producing an open, airy groove.

• I would recommend taking certain phrases and practicing them as an exercise. Play them at slower tempos before returning to the suggested tempo marking as a way to check your pulse and approach. Allow the phrasing of the piece to come though by focusing on pulse, feel, and of course listening to each other.

• Performers are encouraged to add visuals and stick tricks where the opportunity arises. Measures 11, 15, and other similar measures afford each hand a chance to lift, twirl, flip, or otherwise add some flair with the stick. Feel free to get creative and have fun!

Bass drum:

• The bass voice gets to explore a variety of sounds by way of muting/dampening the drum head, playing the rim, and incorporating a cowbell. These elements are most effectively performed using a horizontally mounted bass drum. Please note that there are specific stands that allow for positioning the bass drum for horizontal playing. If these stands are not available, other items such as chairs can be used to position the drum.

• A medium-to-large marching bass drum is recommended. Be sure to use some sort of rim protector to keep from damaging the rim of the bass drum. If necessary, a floor tom tuned to a low pitch or a horizontally mounted kick drum (played with mallets) may be used as a substitute.

• Although the bass drum part can be a challenge due to the syncopated rhythms, there is not a high density of notes, thereby emphasizing the importance of good timekeeping, allowing the snare voice to fill in some of those spaces.

• The Guaguancó groove featured in the bass drum part highlights different tones through rhythmic muting of the head and by playing in two different zones.
