Notes Ah, yes…the chromatic scale. The sighs of boredom emanating from percussionists having to play their chromatic scale at the speed of their fellow wind players can be heard down the street. Percussionists don’t have to worry about making embouchure adjustments on a trumpet or cracking the Da Vinci code that is bassoon fingerings. Once we have the stroke down and know where to start, we’re good to go!
Traumatic Chromatic focuses on playing a fast chromatic scale in a whole tone setting. This scale is broken down into its core components and rebuilt in several different ways (e.g., one hand at a time, both hands, groupings of four notes, groupings of six notes, etc.). After passing the scale around the various keyboard instruments, we are finally given the payoff at the end with a 16th note-based, single-octave chromatic scale. A secondary focus is tempo manipulation. There are several major moments in the piece that build tension and excitement by slowing down (molto rit.), speeding up (accel.), or even halting (fermata). Achieving these effects as an ensemble can be tricky, so focus on communication. - Ralph Hicks

Bringing Percussion Beyond the Back of the Room This piece is one of the selections from the larger compilation book Beyond Basic Percussion. Co-written by Eric Rath and Ralph Hicks, it contains 10 ensembles from which beginning percussion students can learn. If you enjoy this piece, you’ll most get some great use out of the compilation! Also from Rath and Hicks is Five Minute Drill – a program of fun, daily classroom routines for percussion. This program focuses on simple and effective techniques for snare drum basics and mallet keyboard scales that are all set to entertaining playback tracks. Both of these products have received rave reviews from middle school and high school music teachers and are sure to bring percussionists beyond the back of the room!
