PROGRAM NOTES This work is a composition for vibraphone, cymbals, and digital audio playback. The audio playback uses electronic sounds and pre-recorded vibraphone; thus, the balance between live instruments and audio playback must be very accurate. The piece consists of two sections. The first is based on rhythms and melodies shared between the vibraphone and cymbals. This is the groovy part. In the second section, the vibraphone is played with a bow and the cymbals with a chopstick. The title is a play on words based on the meaning of the word “garnishes.” In this piece, the cymbals are the garnishes of the “main dish,” represented by the vibraphone.

PERFORMANCE NOTES The opera gong should be placed in front of the vibraphone’s F#5 and G#5 on a percussion table. It should be pitched as an Eb, but it can be replaced by any object with a short, sharp sound (e.g., glass bottle, can, pan, or any type of junk instrument). It is very important to choose a crash cymbal that’s not too big, with lots of harmonics and a short sound. This could alternatively be a “trash” cymbal, FX cymbal, etc. Pedaling is at the discretion of the performer, except where explicitly marked. Mallets are numbered 1 to 4, starting from the left. It is recommended that the performer play along to the supplied click track. In order to do this, some minor technological details will need to be addressed. Here’s what you’ll need: • A computer or laptop • An audio interface capable of sending at least 4 channels of output, with the ability to switch between outputs for headphone monitoring (example: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) • Headphones and headphone extension cable (if necessary) • Software capable of playing and routing audio. Most common digital audio workstations, such as Logic Pro or Ableton Live, are able to do this. If you don’t have a DAW, there are a number of routing software applications, such as Audio Hijack or Loopback, that can be used for a workaround. The instructions below are not specific to any one piece of software or hardware but have been broadened and made as universal as possible. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Connect your audio interface to your computer. Connect your speakers to outputs 1-2 on your audio interface. Connect your headphones to outputs 3-4. Load the AUDIO ACCOMPANIMENT file and the click track file into your software. Route the audio from the AUDIO ACCOMPANIMENT to outputs 1-2. Route the click track to outputs 3-4. Test and ensure that everything is working. You should hear the click track coming from your headphones and the audio from the AUDIO ACCOMPANIMENT coming from the speakers.
The click track begins with two measures of quarter note click in 4/4.
INSTRUMENTATION Vibes & Garnishes requires the following instrumentation: • Vibraphone • Opera gong (tuned to Eb) • Crash cymbal • Hi-hat • Additional implements: 1 bow, 1 chopstick (optional)
