Three years old and still growing and singing The Zwelethemba Spiritual Gospel Choir during a recent filming session. The choir started off in 2012 with the sole purpose to entertain. Three years down the line the choir has grown in size and now has 52 members and their ages range from 16 to 35. Choir organiser Wendy Kelebu was excited to announce that on 9 August the choir had the opportunity to perform for a programme called Zion that airs on DStv channel 340. “It was an amazing experience and the choir had a ball of a time.” She continued that the choir is open to the public and anyone who thinks that they have what it takes to be part of it, is welcome to join. “The one thing that we are on the lookout for constantly is sponsors, so anyone that wants to assist us can contact Les Taliwe on 082 704 9494”.
Dynamite comes in small packages JOHN BULANI It is true when they say dynamite comes in small packages – Sihle is a brilliant example. All aspiring filmmakers, actors, presenters, content producers and directors of Zwelethemba now have a real shot at making their dreams come true, all thanks to this young filmmaker. Sihle Rampeng (19) is the main brain behind the Zwelethemba community television station, currently generating airwaves online. “If anyone would have told me that I would start a community TV station for my community two or three years back, I would have laughed in that person’s face – a television station nogal!” he laughs. According to Sihle, ZweleTV will be a legal
non-profit community-based TV station established under the terms of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), aimed to establish an independent, sustainable community station that provides access to a variety of educational and entertaining channels. ZweleTV will not just be a community TV station like others, but rather a community development tool used to map, appreciate and recognise the indigenous assets of the community of Zwelethemba, in the form of human capital, diversity of competencies, and expertise. Currently in South Africa there are seven licensed community TV stations available on free-to-air frequencies: Bay TV (Nelson Mandela Bay), TBN (Bisho-based Christian TV), Cape Town TV, Platinum TV (North West
Province), 1KZN, Tshwane TV and Soweto TV. Local media company Brand Media House has come forward to forge a strategic partnership with ZweleTV by committing to train young people interested in media and broadcasting careers as journalists, researchers, producers, camera operators and the like. This opportunity will enable local young people to gain valuable practical experience in all aspects of the media industry, especially in community TV broadcasting. “I would like to call on local entrepreneurs, politicians, community leaders and potential sponsors outside the community boundaries, including government, to support this initiative in any way. “I secondly urge local young people to join and turn this initiative into success.”
