Be optimistic, look on the bright side, stop moaning! I like it when people talk loudly, although there are times when I do not prefer such strident talk. I was at a train station waiting and, after a while, we were so exhausted from this perennial waiting thing, a common hassle with transport, at some stage I actually dozed off. When the train finally arrived and people rushed headlong for the carriage entrances, I realised it was full, standing room only. There were these two elderly men talking X impeccably dressed in casual wear, which somehow proved that they were from around town. This is opposed to those with a more rustic look, denoting their rural background, from emakhaya. They were very loud in their conversation, somehow wanting to draw everyone else into their talk. It was like “you young fellas know nothing,
listen to us talk wisdom.” But I, for one, was reluctantly drawn into this jabber and the subject of their discussion. Moaning about this and that. Moaning about how whites are ripping us off. The disparity in wages. And the yawning economic gap between us and them. I figured, who doesn’t know that! And yet here were these two oldies going on and on as if what they were saying - to each other and us, their fellow travellers - was new. Ja, not the most enervating, if annoying. I felt like dozing off again, not easy standing on your feet. So whoever was within earshot was forced to endure this twaddle. Then, the subject changed to business talk. Still things were not all okay with these two. There was this. There was that. What a gloomy picture they painted. Dear reader, I am sure you wouldn’t want
Don’t look away, stand up I’m really amazed by what is happening in our communities. We have turned to be so passive and careless nowadays. During the time I was growing up, our community was so involved and anything wrong that happened was addressed by everybody. We never had cases where an incident or situation will have no ownership. An example of that is in the conduct of our children; nowadays you see young people in street corners, without feeling self-conscious at all, hugging and smooching each other in the presence of elders, and to them there’s nothing wrong with that. In my time, any man or woman old enough to be my father and mother, was my parent. And guess what, these things we see and say nothing about become the norm, and our communities forever degenerate into the morass we find ourselves in today. Young people have more power than the elderly because the old have become passive in dealing with issues. We bypass things as though we do not see them and act as though we are not present, letting things happen right under our noses. We then complain about anything and everything because we do not want to be active. Riding in a taxi the other day, there was a
heated debate about the response of people to stuff taking place in our community. As we were talking, we drove past people involved in an altercation, and we assumed that someone was being robbed. A man seated next to me immediately jumped off his chair, opened the window and started shouting with the intention to scare the robbers away. Then the discussion took another turn, and the man became the hero among us, and was showered with compliments. Then another commuter made a remark that left my heart troubled and I could see that he was uttering those words with a heavy heart too. He looked at me and said “Sisi, people do not help nowadays” and I could sense that he was talking from experience. He said people tend to watch as one is being attacked and thereafter approach to ask if you have been deprived of anything. I can understand that people are living in fear, but if we were active witnesses in the first place, we would not be living in fear now. Let us be active witnesses my people and not let thugs and hooligans rule our communities. )Pumla Skunana-Kamulu works for Radio Cape Pulpit as a presenter. Contact: pumla.tgse@gmail.com.
me to bore you to death with all the details, lest you also doze off. Anyway, I eventually reached my intended station and then entered a taxi, and guess who I find to share the same seat? One of them! That close, he seemed a likeable fellow, with a sweet smile. I liked him. Trying for small talk, I asked what business he was in. He said he was a pensioner. He went from sweet to bitter. In life, you do find people who try for this and that, to no avail. Was he ever in business before, I asked. He told me he had started as a swimming pool builder and repairer. But saved some money to buy a lorry and some material to build houses. He was a hard worker. He used to lend the lorry out, but over the
years became the worse for wear and was broken down, and nowadays he remained at home doing nothing. His brothers were good for nothing sots. If only they could find the wisdom to repair the lorry and make some money, he would be a happy soul. What about the building material, I asked. It was there too, he said. But he was an old man now. The energy was gone. The youth of today are useless. He wanted to employ them, but they showed no interest. The more he talked the more I realised that he was creating obstacles for himself. Dear reader, do you also see only obstacles in the way, or, do you see hope? I hope you see hope, for if you do not then its goodbye to the future, and hello despair. Stay positive.
Iinkonzo mazivule amasango ngeLizwi Mandinibulise nonke bafundi beli phephandaba, ngegama le Nkosi yethu u Yesu Kristu. Namhlanje ndicela siphendule lo mbuzo uthi, “yintoni indima yebandla lika Thixo ekuhlaleni”. Okokuqala, uMatewu uthi: “ Hambani ngoko niyokuzenza abafundi zonke iintlanga”. Siyabona ngokwalevesi ukuba kwibandla lika Thixo, into yokuqala ebalulekileyo emaliyenze yile yokwazisa ekuhlaleni ngo Yesu. Kubalulekile ukuba abantu bazi ukuba inye indlela yokuya ezulwini, nguYesu, kukuba ibandla liphakame, lishumayele lixelele abantu ngo Yesu. Into esentliziyweni ka Thixo kukuthi abantu basinde ekugwetyweni. Inye ke indlela abayakusindiswa ngayo emgwebeni, kukuthi ibandla liphakame lishumayele ukuze abantu babuyele kuThixo ngoYesu. Ngoko ke indima ebalulekileyo yebandla ekuhlaleni: kukwazisa abahlali ngoYesu, ukuze ngomhla wokugqibela abantu basinde emgwebeni. Ukuba inkonzo yakho ayiyenzi lento, ayishumayeli ukuba abantu bakholwe kuYesu basindiswe, ayikho sendleleni, ayiyenzi intando kaThixo, nabantu ayibakhokheleli endleleni elungileyo Ingaba indima yebandla iphelele ekuxeleleni abantu ngoYesu kuphela na? Hayi, ayiphelelanga. UYakobi uthi, “Kunceda ntoni na bazalwane bam, ukuba umntu uthi unokholo, ab eke imisebenzi engenayo”? Ihambisa ithi: “ukuba ke umzalwane nokuba ngu dade, bathi baswele ukudla imihla ngemihla, athi omnye wenu kubo, hambani ninoxolo, yothani nihluthe, nib eke ningabaniki izinto ezo zifanele umzimba, kunceda ntoni na”. Futhi “ukholo ngaphandle kwemisebenzi lufile”. Ngoko ke Rhamente engcwele ka Thixo, akonelanga ukuba simise iintente, singene esixekweni sishumayela, singene imizi nemizi sixelela abantu ngoYesu, kumele ukuba ivangeli siyiphile.
Kumele ukuba abantu babone uYesu apha kuthi. Rhamente engcwele ka Thixo, ithi ibhayibhile masibe kukukhanya. Umbuzo ngulo: “ingaba thina njenge bandla lika Thixo esithi sisindisiwe sikuko na ukukhanya; ingaba abantu bayambona na uYesu apha kuthi” Inkulu indima ekumele idlalwa libandla lika Thixo ekuhlaleni endingazibalayo: Indlala ikhona, kukhona abantu Rhamente engcwele abalala bengatyanga, kukhona abantwana abadlakazelayo, ingaba thina njengebandla sisonga izandla siqhubeke sicula sisith, “ siyakudumisa Thixo, siyakuvuma ukuba unguYehova”? Iziyobisi nazo zikhona ekuhlaleni, abazali balala ngeenyembezi bekhathazwa ngabantwana abagqitywa yi tik. Yintoni esingayenza njengebandla ukuze sibekukukhanya ekuhlaleni. Singabefundisi masivuleni iinkonzo, iinkonzo mazingavalwa emini zivulwe ebusuku, xa kuzakuthandazwa, masivume iinkonzo zisebenze nje nge khusi apho abantu bakaThixo banokufumana khona ukuphila ngokwasemphefumlweni nagezinye iindlela. Masivume ukuba iinkonzo zisebenze njenge ndawo zokuphuhlisa izakhono, apho khona kunokuqeqeshwa khona abantu bakaThixo ukuze indlala igwetywe. Umzekelo, bangaqeqeshwa kwizinto ezifana nokuthunga, business skills, computers, welding njl njl. Wena unesakhono sokwenza iwelding, fundisa nabanye ukuze nabo baphume endlaleni. Ukuba unolwazi oluphangaleleyo ngezibalo okanye mathematics, thetha noMfundisi wakho khona ukuze ufundise abantwana emva kwemini. Sebenzisa imfundo yakho nesakhono sakho ukunceda abanye. Kanti singawavula amasongo enkozo zethu njengendawo yokunceda abo bazifumana besezingxakini. Indima yebandla ekuhlaleni kukuba lixelele abantu ngoYesu, khona ukuze ilizwe lenkosi libekukukhanya.

Most popular names are... Statistics South Africa has revealed last year’s most popular baby names. According to Stats SA’s report on Recorded Live Births for 2014, the most male babies born last year were named Junior, while parents named their newly born daughters Iminathi. This means the name Sibusiso for boys and Elizabeth for girls, the most popular according to the 2011 Census results, have fallen out of favour. The report was released by Statistician General Pali Lehohla recently. “Obviously when a child is born and they are not named yet, they may call you ‘Junior’ or ‘Baby’,” he said. Other names for boys which made the top 10 for male babies born in 2014 – in order of popularity – were Bandile, Kungawo, Siyabonga, Lethabo, Khayone, Mpho, Bokamoso, Kamogelo and Thato. For girls, Minenhle was the second most popular name, followed by Rethabile, Bokamoso, Karabo, Amogelang, Tshegofatso, Lesedi, Amahle and Thandolwethu. The most popular surname for both sexes was Dlamini, followed by Ntuli, Ngubane, Ndlovu, Nkosi, Khumalo, Ngobeni, Mthethwa,
Zwane and Malulekes. Last year, more than half of the births were registered within 30 days, in accordance with the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act, Stats SA revealed. It added the Department of Home Affairs has made concerted efforts to ensure the registration of births is made as easy as possible. “The potential to improve birth registration exists, as health facilities with maternity units now provide registration services and the social grant system’s birth registration prerequisite complements the birth registration network,” Stats SA said in a statement. “In addition, legislation facilitates timely registrations as it stipulates that registration in South Africa is universal, free for first-time applicants, compulsory and should be done within 30 days from the date of birth.” The Statistician General said the introduction of social security also played a part in the spike of registrations. “The introduction of the child support grant led to a spike in the number of registrations. So there are policy instruments that influence registrations of births.”

September is Heritage Month in South Africa. What better way to celebrate this event, than to sit down and discuss matters pertaining to arts and culture in Zwelethemba with somebody who has been at the forefront of it all for more than two decades. Macebo Kolo is the managing director of Mkolo’s Creative Teamal and also serves as the chairperson of the Zwelethemba Arts and Culture Organisation. Kasi Vision’s John Bulani asked Kolo about what Heritage Month means and what remains lacking in the community of Zwelethemba in relation to arts and heritage. iving heritage is the foundation of most communities in South Africa and an essential source of identity and continuity. Zwelethemba is one of those communities with a rich history in arts, entertainment, sports and the legal fraternity. “It prides itself as a factory that has produced some of the most proclaimed artists and political icons the likes of Dumile Mgxaji Feni, Thobile ‘Tall’ Mtwazi, gospel sensations Lundi Ndyamara, Malibongwe Gcwabe and the late Justice Thembile Skweyiya to count a few. “Unlike Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, which boast their own heritage sites, for the Zwelethemba community, this is all but a dream. “Lots and lots of tourists flock to this community year-in, year-out,” he explains, “but we don’t have a historical tourism route or heritage site that can profile our own history and heritage. The time has come for us to stand together and make this concept possible.” Kolo emphasised how important these

Therefore, it is very important for us to document these experiences of struggle veterans and ordinary members of our community, so that we ensure it becomes our living heritage, a tool we can use to educate future generations about Zwelethemba,” he concluded.

Learner drivers given a hand JOHN BULANI A group of 25 unemployed youth from areas within the Breede Valley Municipality’s (BVM) boundaries have been given a chance to kickstart their first phase in getting their driver’s licences. The learner’s licence programme was initiated by the BVM, together with the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works and provincial government’s Community Development Workers programme (CDWs). A group of 25 youths from De Doorns and Touws River, another 100 youth from Worcester, Rawsonville and Zwelethemba are expected to participate in the programme in the near future. Through weeks of mobilisation by CDWs in various communities for beneficiaries and proper groundwork by the project coordinator Lizo Paul, it all came alive as they announced their selected beneficiaries according to its requirements on Tuesday 15 September. For five days, before they officially write their tests, these young people attended classes facilitated by a departmental official. The classes cover theory and practical demonstrations featured in the training manual. Paul said the partners are in the process of sourcing private individuals to

Parents, enrol for 2016 Parents are urged to enrol their children for the 2016 academic year by the end of this term. A total of 128 545 applications for placement have been processed at schools in the province for the 2016 academic year. So far, 118 429 learners have been placed, says provincial education minister Debbie Schäfer. “Parents who still need spaces at schools need to urgently approach their nearest schools or the closest district office to find out which schools still have spaces available,” she said. “We cannot guarantee places in schools of choice, but will do our utmost to place children appropriately.” Schäfer explained that planning for an academic year requires a great deal of work from the provincial education department’s head office, districts, principals, teachers and school management teams. “Last year, we introduced the new online School Admission Management Information system (Sami),” she said. “The system was developed to simplify the management of learner enrolment and makes it easier for schools to capture applications for places and share this information with other schools and officials. “There are currently 3 470 learners who
have been accepted at more than one school. In all, 2 257 of these learners are Grade 8 learners who have not confirmed if they are taking up their places. “We expect learners will continue to migrate to the province from other provinces in search of a better education. Included in our planning for 2016, is the allocation of additional mobiles to schools, as well as additional LTSM being ordered for predicted growth.” Three new schools will be opened in the province, 190 additional mobile classrooms are being sourced and nine replacement schools have been completed. “Each year we plan as best we can for the influx of additional learners,” Schäfer said. “The inward migration has huge financial and planning implications, impacting on the provision of education resources and overall management of the system. “We have to prioritise according to the greatest need across the whole province, and available budget. Our current budget is under considerable pressure. We appeal to all parents to honour enrolment deadlines. Failure to enrol children on time places a massive burden on our officials at the start of the school year and disrupts teaching and learning time.”

FREE AEROBICS CLASSES
Fitness regime trending ANGELO JULIES “Commit to be fit” is the new slogan of the Aerobics Community Fitness Club’s (ACFC) latest fitness campaign in Zwelethemba. The ACFC launched its new fitness campaign at the Thusong Centre – also the host of the ACFC – on Saturday 19 September. The initiative was begun by Bongani Magawu in April this year to address the health and fitness issues of the community. “Health and fitness have always been an issue in the community,” he told Kasi Vision. “People want to join gyms but they don’t have money to do so, and all the gyms are
in town, which makes it difficult to get fit - and to keep fit. “So we decided to offer free aerobics classes so people can get fit. And with the help of the Breede Valley Municipality, who provided the venue, we were able to get the ball rolling.” Teboho Motsoeneng soon joined the club as the trainer and, by word of mouth and via Facebook, residents were informed of this new opportunity to get fit at the club. At the club’s first session, 30 people joined in the fitness fun; today the ACFC has 50 members. The aerobics classes are held from Mondays to Fridays, from 17:00 to 18:00. Residents are encouraged to join in the fun. After all, there is no cost.
Friendly society a decade old The church of St Manche Masemola was filled to capacity with navy and white uniforms, when the Diocese of False Bay Girls and Boys Friendly Society (GBFS) members organised their Annual Diocesan Conference on Friday 11 September and Saturday 12th. This year’s celebration marked a decade since the organisation was established. Some of the invited sister organisations attending the event included the Diocese of Cape Town, Bernard Mizeki Guilders, the Anglican Youth Fellowship and Mary Magdalene parish. On Friday the programme began with a Eucharist service, which was followed by an information sharing and networking session. The Saturday programme was set aside to celebrate Africanism and Heritage Month; this was celebrated through vari-
ous traditional attires representing Xhosas, Sothos, Tswanas, Vendas and other cultures in the country. The celebration also featured various entertainment pieces, including drama, music, traditional dance and poetry. To end the programme, the GBFS also had a constructive dialogue engaging young people to have a deeper understanding and enrichment about cultural diversity and what it means to be an African. The cherry on top was a surprise visit from renowned radio personality of Umhlobo Wenene FM, and motivational speaker, Thozama “Sis Thoz” Ngcongolo, who hosts the Sunday morning children’s religious show. In her motivational message, Ngcongolo encouraged young people to become good examples to others in the community as they represent God, as stated in the First Letter of Paul to Timothy (1 Timothy).

Worcester Table Tennis Club gets new lease on life RICK MARAIS The Worcester Table Tennis Club, which closed its doors as a result of a struggle to find a suitable venue in 2006, was recently given a new lease on life. Instructor Mark Kleintjies says five members decided to reopen the club about three months ago. “Since then, we have grown to about 40 members,” he told Kasi Vision. “We train on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the JC Beukes Hall.” He believes table tennis is unlike any other sport. “It’s an excellent sport for youngsters, as it promotes hand-eye coordination while also being a fun way to get fit,” Kleintjies says. “Pupils are welcome to join or ask their parents to contact me on 083 408 6406 for more details.” Kleintjies added that all five of the

place at the JC Beukes Hall on Saturday 3 October. “We urge the community to come and show their support.”
