¡A Grito Pelado! Por Jose Chaves

Pérdida de Identidad

E

INDEX • INDICE You can take it with you! THE TIDE/LA MAREA: April/May Manuel Antonio Map Directory Friendly Sunshine Quepos Map Tips About Playita

You can take it with you!!!!

Y

themselves are more energetic and productive (and I think there was something about a more active sex life there too!) On vacation, you met new friends, ate new foods and saw different cultures. This too is within your reach back home. Keep in touch with new friends, go out to a different restaurant or take in a different cultural event in your area. Find out what the tourists to city go to see, and go there. It always amazes me when visiting friends that I end up taking them to places I’ve read about and they’ve never even heard about! Analyze what made your vacation so successful and then apply those items to your life. I hear over and over again from folks that they can’t believe that they’ve survived without checking their email every 15 minutes or they haven’t seen the news in a week and don’t know, nor really care, what’s happening in the rest of the world. We can take a news ‘diet’ whenever we want. Two hundred years ago, folks got along just fine reading a weekly paper, then a daily. With radio we got hourly news. CNN came along a dozen years ago and made us feel guilty if we weren’t on top of all that happens in the world. Come on! you can get along just fine without knowing that the vice president of South Kazakhstan had plops removed from his ass! Enjoy your vacation. There really is so much to do and enjoy here in Manuel Antonio. While you’re here though, make plans to bring your vacation back with you and keep your spirit fresh and carefree. n

ou know what it’s like. You’ve just spent $2500 on a great vacation that took you to exotic locations filled with incredible experiences and new friends and now you’re back at work where it’s all piled up and a hundred items are clamouring for your attention. You look around and say to yourself, “Did I just have a vacation ‘cause right now I don’t feel it?” Fortunately, once we’re back in the thick of it, there are a number of things that we can do to help keep fresh those idyllic thoughts and feelings of peace and relaxation that we had while on vacation. First off, print off some of those thousands of pictures you took on your digital camera and bring them to the office or scatter them around the house to remind yourself of the fun and relaxation. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then your camera is your vacation diary and its pictures can take you away from your crashed computer or exploding in box. Why not compare some of your co-workers to the animals that you photographed in the park? Second, do at home the things that made your vacation special. Read a book or book a massage. They helped you relax here and can do the same at home. Everyone deserves a treat once in a while. You took a walk in the park or down the beach here, why not at home? In our fast paced world we think we don’t have time for these luxuries, but in reality, we don’t have a choice. Study after study shows that people who feel good about 5

A Taste to Try By Don Willems

H

dillas are made with Brie cheese, fresh mango caramelized onion and served with a fresh cilantro and lime and sour cream dip.

ere in Manuel Antonio, is a wonderful restaurant, serving fabulous meals made from the exotic foods of Costa Rica, along with your favorite meats and seafood.

A great liquid partner to this dish is La Hacienda’s very own Mangotini This refreshing twist to the classic martini, made with citrus vodka, cointreau, fresh mango pulp and a splash of lime.

La Hacienda has been open since 2004. It has been managed by the owners, Tracy and Bill since 2006. Tracy adds her personal touch to the menu offerings with many of her own recipes.

• Coco Mussels Mussels covered in a rich, creamy coconut and ginger sauce or try the curry with fresh peppers, onion, pineapple and basil. Prepared with your choice of chicken, shrimp or vegetables. Served on jasmine rice.

The dishes are prepared with the freshest ingredients, grown and delivered by farmers and fishermen near Quepos, Manuel Antonio. Many of these same farmers supply the fresh fruit market held every Saturday in Quepos.

• Pina Chicken Skewers Chicken grilled with fresh pineapple, and nicely glazed with a tamarind-rum soy sauce. Sprinkled with sesame seeds, green onions, and cilantro.

Here are some of the menu favorites, rich with Costa Rican ingredients, and Tracy’s personal touches: • Pescado Ceviche A tasty twist to this traditional dish, made with fresh mahi mahi, cilantro, onion, red pepper, fresh lime and Tracy’s secret ingredients. This light dish is wonderful on a hot afternoon. Great as a meal or an appetizer.

La Hacienda also mixes up some great tropical cocktails, along with the classics. An extensive wine list is also available.

• Mango Quesadillas These special Quesa-

Enjoy. n

La Hacienda serves both lunch and dinner meals. They are open daily from 10:30am until 10pm. Sundays they open at 4:30pm.

Friendly Sunshine W

way. The intention is always made with greater strength in mind. Friends should know this, I should know this too. Hard times and surprises come to all of us as humans, I believe that is the essence which makes us grow and evolve. It is only with acquaintances that we have to be careful of our words. With friends we laugh and jest and play no matter how bad things may appear.

By Todd Pequeen

e live in a world that has a massive amount of choices. The ease of travel and shared experiences, combined with Internet knowledge, can turn even the most shy person into a potential encyclopedia of knowledge. Greater acceptance and information on world cultures is creating an open arm policy to minorities, underground scenes, nonpopular art forms, and is further blurring what is perceived as normal or not. Judgment free ideals and openness toward each other leads to friendliness in the masses, a slow brewing of peace full existence for those of us willing to get off our high horses and not listen to anyone but ourselves. What we feel and want personally is fine. I am surrounded by a group of friends where tolerance and variety is what spurs on our fun. It is our bloodline to not only share amongst ourselves, but then to pass it on to new people joining our community or just visiting.

To me friends help to cultivate my years and my life. They are also the ones who I want to be with in twenty years time. The more I give of myself, especially my weaknesses, the more I feel I draw in other people who can relate and who can share. This is the beginning of friendship. Success is great to hear about, but failure may be more of an indicator of honesty, struggle, and hardship, often void of ego. Sometimes the worst of circumstances can create a strong union for those involved. My favorite friends are the ones that express their care for me by suggesting things I may need to hear, but maybe do not want to hear. I love those around me that divulge and then embrace. My most trying times have been from the loss of quality people from my life through misunderstanding, emotional or physical stress, which creates unclear thinking and conflict.

I´ve heard many people say that it is hard to make friends in this town. I have to disagree. I have experienced a tremendous amount of acceptance and compassion from the locals I have met here. Perhaps I am just lucky. I have never been the type to go out of my way to engage new people into my circle of friends yet, I remain open and non-judge mental of other peoples problems, contradictions, and short comings. I realize that our intentions for the day or night can drastically change from unexpected happenings, especially here in this odd little Costa Rican community. I can always count on my phone ringing and positivity greeting me during my every day routine. My friends words of advice, feelings, suggestions, and hopes and desires, I feel are shared openly. Honesty being the glue that holds it all together. I think a friend can and will give me advice, a friend can also hear advice and not take harsh words the wrong

I want to send out my sunshine with thanks and love for the group of men and women in my life that inspire and motivate me out of my normal routine. The real estate go getter's and the art creators and photographers. The hotel owners and the outdoor specialists. The guys with the smiling faces whether the pressure of the day is great or small. The guys that help each other out with business no matter what the field. There are no angles, reimbursement intentions, or self getting into the way. Simple karma and love is the fuel. We all strengthen the dreams we have separately, and in the long run, together. We are a lucky few and when we all get together the energy is electric and motivating. We surf both the waves of the Pacific as well as the close outs of our lives. What more can anyone ask for? I hope all of us begin to grow more with our own families and beyond. What a better day to start than today. n 14
