PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the latest edition of the Breeders Update. With the breeding season winding down and the sales just around the corner, I would like to thank members for supporting our association and wish you well at the 2020 round of yearling sales. It has been another highly successful year for NSW bred horses and of course this year we witnessed the retirement of Champion mare Winx and amongst many others, the brilliant win of Yes Yes Yes in the Everest. It is with sadness that I report the loss of some key industry figures in 2019. Only very recently our long standing TBNSW director and life member Les Young passed away, as well as highly regarded TBA director Ken Barry. Other well-known industry figures Steve Brem and Paul Whelan also passed away in 2019 and our thoughts and condolences are with their families. We also lost champion stallion Redoute’s Choice along with Hinchinbrook and Magic Albert as well as NSW broodmare of the year St Therese. TBNSW has co-ordinated several educational seminars prior to the breeding season. The Wagga seminar was well attended and run in conjunction with CSU equine vets who very willingly give freely of their time for which we are very grateful. Two seminars were held at Scone which covered a wide range of topics including veterinary, nutrition, agronomy, legal, safety as well as a pedigree and stud secretary workshop. With horse welfare being at the forefront of industry challenges, TBNSW is working with Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and Racing NSW to develop strategies to encourage the take up of thoroughbreds in other equestrian homes and monitor their welfare through a national data registry. Drought conditions throughout much of Eastern Australia have continued and again proven challenging for breeders and all livestock producers. Fortunately, most of Victoria has had a good season which has helped with the supplies of available hay and grain. With ferocious bushfires burning throughout parts of the State, we can only hope for at least average rainfall throughout the Summer. Several new prize money and BOBS initiatives announced by RNSW have certainly benefited NSW trainers, owners and breeders. We look forward to meeting with RNSW to continue to fine tune BOBS to help ensure that a greater number of older horses remain racing in NSW and their owners are duly rewarded.

Racing and Sports provide a Timeform recap of key performances from the 2019 Melbourne and Sydney Spring Carnivals. With Winx retired and a host of newly announced big money races in Sydney spearheaded by the $7.5million Golden Eagle, the 2019 Spring Carnival had some genuine intrigue surrounding it. Who would capitalise in Winx’s absence and just how would the Chris Waller team adapt to life without the champion mare in their stable? What impact would Racing NSW’s expansion of their spring carnival have on traditional Group 1 spring features?
Five-year-olds As had been the case for the previous three seasons with Winx, Chris Waller boasted the highest rated older horse for the spring, this time with Nature Strip. After winning the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill last autumn, Nature Strip made the transition to genuine weight-for-age sprinter this spring with a pair of victories at the top level. Nature Strip split his time through four campaign starts between Sydney and Melbourne however it was the Garden State where the five-year-old produced his best. The son of Nicconi recorded the first win of his spring in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m), defeating speedy mares Miss Leonidas and Sunlight. Nature Strip returned to Sydney where he produced a close fourth in The Everest behind stablemate Yes Yes Yes then headed back down the highway to Flemington for the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) on November 9. What ensued was a career best win delivered in clinical fashion with Nature Strip leading throughout for a dominant 3.3 length success. His win returned a Timeform rating of 128, equal to Terravista’s 2014 victory and only bettered by Black Caviar’s 2010 success over the past two decades. It was the second time Chris Waller and James McDonald had combined for a VRC Sprint Classic success having won the 2015 renewal with Delectation. Sprinters dominated the top of the Timeform 5YO+ Ratings chart for the 2019 spring. While unlucky when fifth in The Everest, Pierata showed his sprinting prowess either side of that outing with convincing successes in both the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on September 21 and the Redzel Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on November 2. Pierata’s subsequent efforts assessed at 125 came when recording narrowly beaten seconds in both the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) behind Nature Strip at Rosehill on March 23 and the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 7 behind Redzel. A winner of the first two Everest renewals, Redzel disappointed in the 2019 running behind Yes Yes Yes however is prominent on the Timeform 5YO+ Ratings chart for the season to date courtesy of his Concorde Stakes win. Having been firmly in Winx’s keeping since her first Cox Plate victory in 2015, the middle distance weight for age feature was up for grabs in 2019. The 2019 Cox Plate was won by Japanese mare Lys Gracieux with a performance Winx would have been proud of. Settled back in the field, Lys Gracieux produced a long, sustained run to reel in a brave Castlevecchio for a 1.5 length success with Te Akau Shark finishing third.
Redzel (Snitzel-Millrich)
A resounding victor of the Group 1 Takarazuka Kinen (2200m) at Hanshin Racecourse in June, the Heart’s Cry mare picked up an additional $2million bonus on top of the $3million winner’s cheque as part of Moonee Valley’s international bonus scheme. Her effort returned a Timeform rating of 125+.

Four-year-olds The inaugural running of the $7.5million Golden Eagle was announced in December 2018. A 1500m event run at Set Weights exclusively for fouryear-olds, the Golden Eagle was part of Racing NSW’s spring expansion which also included the addition of the $1million Bondi Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds and the $1million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds. The first renewal of the Golden Eagle proved to have a substantial bearing on the 2019 spring carnival with five of the six southern hemisphere four-year-olds on the Timeform 4YO Ratings Chart for 2019/20 contesting the event held at Rosehill on November 2. As expected for such a lucrative event, the Golden Eagle attracted an impressive capacity field of four-year-olds from both Australia and overseas. The $4.1million winner’s cheque didn’t leave Rosehill courtesy of the Chris Waller-trained Kolding. Gelded after a frustrating 2018/19 summer campaign, Kolding returned in the autumn where his meteoric rise through the grades began.
Prior to the Kokura Kinen, Mer De Glace had claimed both the Group 3 Niigata Daishoten (2000m) and the Group 3 Naruo Kinen (2000m) under the guidance of jockey Damian Lane. Lane and Mer De Glace maintained their unbeaten record in partnership with a Caulfield Cup success which returned a Timeform rating of 122. Despite being handed a 1kg penalty following his Caulfield Cup success, Mer De Glace was still well fancied to become the first Caulfield Cup - Melbourne Cup double winner since Ethereal in 2001. The Hisashi Shimizu-trained stallion was game in his attempt to achieve the double, closing well late to finish just 1.2 lengths off the Melbourne Cup winner for 2019, Vow And Declare. In a race now dominated by international raiders and imported stayers, Vow And Declare’s Melbourne Cup success was the first by an Australian-bred stayer since Shocking a decade ago in 2009.
It continued through the spring with the son of Ocean Park providing Chris Waller and jockey Glen Boss with their respective fourth Epsom Handicap successes. A trip to Melbourne would usually ensue for an Epsom winner however connections elected to keep Kolding in Sydney for the Golden Eagle It proved to be the right move as Kolding dived through late after being held up badly in the straight for a long neck success ahead of Sunlight and the consistent Mizzy. Kolding’s lucrative payday also returned the Neville Morgan-raced gelding a Timeform rating of 124. The quality of opposition Kolding accounted for in the Golden Eagle is highlighted by the strength of lead up form boasted by rivals. Arcadia Queen is the top rated four-year-old mare of the spring for her exciting eastern state debut where she won the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on September 14.
Sunlight (Zoustar-Solar Charged)
Golden Eagle runner up Sunlight defeated five time Group 1 winner Santa Ana Lane two starts earlier in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 5. Brutal (Premiere Stakes) and Classique Legend who was only narrowly beaten by Pierata in The Shorts also sit prominent on the Timeform 4YO Ratings Chart and added further depth to the Golden Eagle field. Mer De Glace produced the pick of the four-year-old performances in Melbourne this spring when he claimed the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 19. The son of Rulership had charged through his grades in Japan during 2019 and arrived in Australia off winning the Group 3 Kokura Kinen (2000m) at Kokura in August. Three-year-olds Three-year-olds impressed through the 2019 spring carnival with the strength of the crop highlighted in the richest turf race in the world, the $14million Everest won by Yes Yes Yes. The Chris Waller-trained colt only received a slot for The Everest ten days before the lucrative sprint at Randwick on October 19 after the retirement of Enticing Star who previously held the entry. After commencing his campaign with seconds in both the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose behind Bivouac, Yes Yes Yes entered The Everest third run from a spell with Blinkers applied for the first time. The colt capitalised on the last minute opportunity, settling worse than midfield and charging home the final furlong for a half length win over Santa Ana Lane with Trekking in third.
Yes Yes Yes (Declaration of War-Sin Sin Sin)
The son of Rubick became the first three-year-old colt to win The Everest and in the process may have set the trend with what could be the new perfect race campaign for a top sprinting colt during the spring. Resuming in the Run To The Rose, to the Golden Rose, onto the Everest third up and ideally, the Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight six two weeks after could prove a path well worn moving forward. Connections of Yes Yes Yes elected to spell the son of Rubick after the Everest with a view to his 2020 autumn campaign and a potential trip to Royal Ascot. Yes Yes Yes was one of three clear top sprinting colts through the 2019 spring who took it in turn to maximise their future stallion prospects. Sitting alongside Yes Yes Yes at the top of the Timeform 3YO Ratings Chart is Exceedance.

The Exceed And Excel colt kicked off his spring in most encouraging fashion when beating Bivouac in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m). Timeform Review continued

The convincing success returned a Timeform rating of 119+, the highest winning figure of a San Domenico Stakes since Charge Forward returned a rating of 123 in 2004 when beating Fastnest Rock and Dance Hero. It was the third San Domenico success in the past six years for Team Hawkes having saddled up previous winners Nostradamus (2014) and Star Turn (2016). Exceedance already profiled as the pick of the stables’ San Domenico winners however reaffirmed it when wrapping up his spring by taking out the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 2. The long neck win over Bivouac returned a Timeform rating of 125, a performance which makes Exceedance the equal highest rated colt of season 2019/20 to date alongside Yes Yes Yes.
Bivouac is the fourth horse in the past six years to claim the Run To The Rose - Golden Rose double. Despite going winless through his spring campaign, Castelvecchio sits prominently in the Timeform 3YO Ratings Chart for his brave second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) behind Lys Graciuex. The colt also ran second behind Shadow Hero in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 12. Super Seth and Alligator Blood were the pick of the three-year-old milers this spring after running the quinella in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12.
The Vinery-owned colt raced four times through the spring carnival and through the prep had an ongoing battle with Godolphin’s colt Bivouac. While Exceedance had Bivouac’s measure in both the San Domenico Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes, he could only run third to Bivouac as he claimed the Run To The Rose/Golden Rose double. Another son of Exceed And Excel, Bivouac followed in the footsteps of former Godolphin colts Exosphere (2015) and Astern (2016) by winning the Golden Rose.

Two-year-olds Sydney can lay claim to hosting the best two-year-old performances seen through the 2019 spring. Global Quest is the highest rated colt having taking out the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick on October 5. It was Chris Waller’s second Breeders’ Plate success having claimed his first victory in the early season twoyear-old feature with Performer in 2017. As well as the Golden Eagle, the extended Sydney spring carnival in 2019 also included the $1million Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill on November 9 The impressive purse early in the season meant the first two across the line would guarantee themselves a Golden Slipper berth during the 2020 autumn carnival.
Global Quest (More Than Ready-Global Dream)
Not only confirming her spot in the Golden Slipper but shooting to early favouritism for the event was Dame Giselle. The Team Snowden-trained filly was defeated on debut at Randwick on October 26 by See You Soon. A fortnight later the exacta was reversed as Dame Giselle dashed away for a 3.8 length success over the Jean Dubois-trained filly. Dame Giselle’s dominant win returned a Timeform rating of 109, equal to Global Quest’s Breeders’ Plate with the pair enjoying a four pound edge over the nearest rivals in the 2019/20 two-year-old division.

NEW BOBS BONUSES ANNOUNCED $100,000 BOBS Platinum and $50,000 BOBS Gold Bonuses for Selected Races Throughout NSW Racing NSW have announced that its BOBS Scheme will be enhanced by the addition of a Platinum and Gold Category. Commencing from January 2020, selected races will have a BOBS Platinum bonus of $100,000 or a BOBS Gold bonus of $50,000, offered for the winners of the race. The existing BOBS bonuses will be referred to as BOBS Silver and will continue to apply to the races that already carry BOBS bonuses. The BOBS Platinum and BOBS Gold races will be open to all horses that have been nominated for any BOBS series. Accordingly, it will now for the first time apply to
horses aged four years and older. The BOBS Platinum and BOBS Gold bonus races will be held at locations throughout NSW, in all sectors. Owners winning BOBS Platinum bonuses may forego taking the payment in cash and double up their bonus to $160,000, which can be used to buy or breed a thoroughbred making the total BOBS Platinum bonus up to a possible $180,000. Similarly, owners winning BOBS Gold bonuses may double up their cash bonus to $80,000, with the total BOBS Gold bonus offered, being up to $90,000.

How we perceive the Thoroughbred and its role/purpose as just a racehorse is a journey most of us could reflect on. Perception starts with us and can be changed by us. In the current climate we need our industry to unite in becoming stronger not weaker, before the court of public opinion changes it for us. The ABC story was horrendous, the actions of those abattoir employees is disgraceful, investigation and regulation must be enforced to stop this cruel behaviour. No animal deserves to be treated in this manner. However, abattoirs are not controlled by the racing industry, they are regulated by state governments and are privately owned. But let’s be very clear, the small minority of people involved in the mistreatment of these horses are not participants in the great thoroughbred industry we support.

The overwhelming majority of thoroughbred industry participants love their horses. Retired racehorses & broodmares return to the paddock and/or breeding barn, younger horses to a new career, as in any industry as large as ours, a small minority may bring an entire industry into disrepute. This is being addressed but suggestions by the ABC and some of their viewers that the whole racing industry is to blame is as prejudiced as it is inaccurate. Where is the regulation and accountability regarding media reporting? Who is holding them accountable? People are so quick to jump on the boycott racing bandwagon. Horses and human beings have relied on each other for thousands of years, in one of the greatest symbiotic relationships in human history. Horses had many purposes including transport, warfare, industry, agriculture, racing, riding and recreation. Human dependence on the horse has diminished since the industrial revolution making Thoroughbred racing one of the last great testaments to one of mankind’s greatest achievements, horsemanship.

This, however, does not mean racing is a Thoroughbred’s sole purpose. How do you think you’d be wired if you were born and raised being told you were created for only one job? Horses like people love to have a purpose, they have personalities just like us, someone treats us badly it’s cope it, flee or fight. Some are lucky enough to be tapped on the shoulder and asked to try doing something different, off the track. Were we all not good at something once that we now call a skill? Wouldn’t you agree that it just takes the right training. Many horse breeds are bred for a specific purpose and a particular discipline but they should not be defined by it. There’s no doubt the Thoroughbred has been bred primarily for racing, but that is not to deny the Thoroughbreds versatility off the racetrack. Perhaps the Thoroughbred brand has been too successful promoting speed and its primary purpose as a racehorse. Perhaps we missed the “Bred to be a champion in every field” marketing campaign that could have celebrated Thoroughbred success in all aspects of the equine world and made the Thoroughbred more fashionable to equestrians. So many great Thoroughbreds have tasted success outside the racing industry winning national and international equestrian competitions, even at Olympic level. There is work to be done within the racing industry to stop the wrongful acts of a minority, but the same can be said when we look at other sectors such as the church and the small number of clergy who molest children, or the small number of corrupt politicians, the small number of young people who become drug dealers. To compare, we don’t respond by banning religion, by dismantling government or accusing all young people of all being

criminals. Let’s focus on creating solutions for our industry, our thoroughbred breed, acknowledging what is outside the racing industry’s control and by not bringing everyone down. The issue of horse welfare has never been more prominent with a percentage of prizemoney being allocated to welfare and rehoming programs. Horse lovers spend a fortune every year caring for horses of all kinds including retired racehorses, we encourage everyone to be careful of biased reporting and tarnishing an entire industry because of the actions of a few. The Thoroughbred breeding and racing industries are Australia’s largest agricultural employer and is extremely important in regional areas. With so much chatter on the channels many great ideas and solutions are being discussed and enacted, we must remain proactive and pragmatic in our approach. How the non-racing public perceive the Thoroughbred and our industry is our collective responsibility. Long before the ABC report we’d been supporting the great work of several credible not for profit Thoroughbred organisations addressing welfare. It’s now time to change public perceptions and there’s much to be done, let’s work together to support the breed that supports us.

THOROUGHBRED SPORT HORSE ASSOCIATION The Thoroughbred Sport Horse Association aims to create a professional performance career for registered thoroughbreds. To achieve this, we are initiating thoroughbred-only competitions in the equestrian disciplines of show jumping, eventing, dressage, camp-drafting and hacking. In 2020 starting with show-jumping, TSHA’s main objective is to work with show organisers to create dedicated thoroughbred classes and to secure funding from the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry for prize money, thereby creating a market and a competition destination for all registered thoroughbreds. A sport horse can have a competition life (depending on soundness) of up to 15 years or more. Which is why TSHA is in for the long haul, aiming to have on-going competitions in each state of Australia focusing on both city and regional competitions for the foreseeable future. TSHA competitions seek to improve the market for thoroughbred performance horses. Since the inception of TSHA in March 2019, the first competitions in May, 397 licences have been purchased and over 1,500 rounds have been jumped at 14 shows in QLD, WA and NSW. Support of this nature always comes from the heart, there are no statistics and often little return on your investment. The first people to back the TSHA were breeders – John Singleton from Strawberry Hill Stud and Greg & Jodie White from Robrick Lodge Scone. TSHA are eternally grateful to these breeders for allowing us to start running thoroughbred show jumping classes and being instrumental in initiating the first year of success for the TSHA.
The team of Krissy Harris, Karin Attebo, Nicole Poetsch, Linda Vojkovic and Katelyn Mallyon have all put in countless hours for the love of horses and kept the administration minimal. With competition licence fees of $55 per horse per year and 429 horses, our sponsorship has now grossed us $105,795. TSHA has handed over $96,342 in prize money, trophy rugs and sashes. We have spent $3,355 on advertising, travel expenses and the purchase of a microchip scanner. NO HORSING AROUND WHEN IT COMES TO STALLION FERTILITY Thanks to the ground breaking work of University of Newcastle postdoctoral researcher Dr Zamira Gibb, a team of researchers and funding from AgriFutures™ Thoroughbred Horses Program, the development of a small device that can predict stallion sperm quality at the time of breeding. Dr Gibb works with the thoroughbred horse industry including the Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre and equine reproductive specialists, using natural methods to improve fertility and improve reproductive outcomes, with a focus on stallions. “Thoroughbred horses are selected for breeding on the basis of pedigree and athletic performance as opposed to reproductive traits and therefore, like humans, are not subjected to selection pressure for fertility,” said Dr Gibb. “This has resulted in equine and human populations with significantly lower per cycle conception rates than other species.” Dr Gibb and her team at the University of Newcastle have been trialling a device which allows a test to be performed on-farm which is a greater predictor of the success of a cover than conventional methods. This is how it works. At the time of cover, the stallion handler captures a drop of semen which is known in scientific terms as the “post coital urethral sample”, or on-farm as a ‘dismount sample’, in a warm cup. Dr Gibb and her team have developed a device into which this droplet is placed to assess the sperm’s characteristics to show the likelihood of pregnancy. “Previously, the shape or motility of the sperm cells were used as a predictor of fertility, but we have shown that the defining important factor is sperm metabolic activity in a dismount semen sample which helps identify breedings, or covers, which are unlikely to produce a pregnancy,” said Dr Gibb “This is really important because it allows managers to schedule the mare to be rebred on the same cycle to increase the chance of a positive pregnancy outcome. By increasing per cycle conception rates, mares will conceive earlier in the breeding season, resulting in earlier foals which will attract higher prices at yearling sales and be more competitive in age-related races.” Dr Gibb’s work has also been influenced by Laureate Professor John Aitken, the Director of the University of Newcastle’s Priority Research Centre for Reproductive Science, who asked her to head up a new team in horse fertility while she was in her last year of her PhD.
“Professor Aitken is one of the world’s leaders in human sperm research and although not translating directly due to differences in metabolic processes between horse and human sperm, working alongside a world leader in human fertility has been a great advantage for the horse fertility team,” said Dr Gibb. “We are gaining invaluable insights into the basic biology of stallion sperm metabolism and this information is key in guiding our research and delivering key findings for the industry both here and internationally.” Research shows external factors such as environmental fluctuations and changes to management practices also play a part in falling fertility rates. Dr Gibb said the research team has also looked holistically at improving horse health by considering external changes such as reducing temperature levels for both stallions and mares. “Like us, horses get stressed with extended periods of intense heat so something as simple as installing misters at the hottest part of the day, can improve fertility,” said Dr Gibb. AgriFutures Australia Program Manager Research, Annelies McGaw said one of the overall aims of the Thoroughbred Horses Program is to assist the thoroughbred horse industry by developing collaborative strategies to improve breeding outcomes in a safe and sustainable way. “We hope the device will become an invaluable tool for use in research and will be as well used as a microscope or flow cytometer, a device which measures the characteristics of cells,” said Ms McGaw. The next step is the development of a device which can be used by general farm staff. “We are now ready to construct prototype devices and disseminate them to partner farms for testing,” said Dr Gibb.

Project spotlight: A novel device for the on-farm assessment of stallion sperm fertility Project ID: PRJ-011712 Principal investigator: Zamira Gibb Research organisation: The University of Newcastle This project aims to help the thoroughbred horse industry by developing ways to improve reproductive performance by investigating stallion fertility. Post-breeding ‘dismount’ semen samples from thoroughbred stallions are routinely collected throughout the season to do basic semen assessments. While conventional sperm assays, such as sperm concentration, motility and morphological assessments are a valuable first way of identifying sub-fertile stallions, they provide only moderate information on the functional competence of sperm cells. The major objective of this project is to develop, test and validate a device which can measure the metabolic rate of sperm in a dismount semen sample, to identify samples which are unlikely to produce a pregnancy. This will allow stallion managers to schedule the mare to be re-bred on the same cycle if needed, to increase the chance of a positive pregnancy outcome. By increasing per-cycle conception rates, mares will conceive earlier in the breeding season, resulting in earlier foals which will attract higher prices at yearling sales and be more competitive in age-related races. The findings from this study will be pivotal in guiding both device modifications; and stallion and mare management strategies.
Project spotlight: Rapid diagnosis of infectious agents of equine reproductive loss Project ID: PRJ-011628 Principal investigator: Cheryl Jenkins wResearch organisation: NSW Department of Primary Industries Equine reproductive loss due to infectious agents impacts significantly on Australian thoroughbred breeders. A range of bacterial agents and one particular viral agent are involved. Some of these also pose a significant occupational health risk to workers in this industry. Accurate detection of the infectious agents is important for the management of affected mares. While nucleic acid testing is considered the ‘gold standard’, testing is normally only performed by well equipped veterinary diagnostic laboratories with molecular capabilities. This restriction means significant delays before diagnostic results are available. This project will develop and evaluate rapid nucleic acid tests for two important causes of equine reproductive loss in Australia, Equine Herpes Virus1 (EHV1), a recognised cause of equine abortion, and Chlamydia psittaci, an emerging cause of reproductive loss as well as zoonotic disease of veterinarians and stud workers.

FITTING FAREWELL TO A LEGEND OF BLOODSTOCK LES YOUNG Something more than just an absent committee member was missing from December’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ NSW committee meeting. Article | C Searcy
There was a void, an ‘eery’ feeling that something substantial was awry, which of course it was given the recent passing of thoroughbred breeding stalwart, Les Young. A large hole was left in the hearts and minds of all attending the meeting and the Association’s AGM, with the long-time committee member and former executive officer having succumbed to a longstanding illness but a surprisingly sudden demise in mid-November.

The 80’s team
Les sadly left behind no blood relatives, but as Peter Graham, the celebrant at his funeral pointed out, he is well-remembered by the extended ‘family’ of the thoroughbred breeding, racing and media worlds. Les Young’s deeds in Australian thoroughbred breeding have been well documented (see Brian Russell’s excellent ‘Bluebloods’ article from 2017 http://www.tbnsw. com.au/news/les-young-racedoutside-his-pedigree ) and to this day horses he either bought or provided mating plans for continue to provide winners at the highest level. AJC Oaks winner Circles of Gold, bought by Les for prominent owner Frank Tagg not only threw international Group 1 winners Elvstroem and Haradasun, but even this spring featured as the third dam of the Toorak Handicap winner Cape Of Good Hope. And only a few years ago Cape Of Good Hope’s fullbrother, the six-time Group 1 winner Highland Reel was runner up to the great Winx in the 2015 WS Cox Plate.

For only $41,000 in 1979 in Adelaide, Les and business partner Bob Lapointe bought five yearlings all of
whom won races, including the triple Oaks winning filly November Rain. In that group was another filly Easy Date, who Les put to sprint sire Lunchtime to produce the champion sprinter and hugely influential stallion Snippets. Easy Date then found further fame as the granddam of Arrowfield Stud stallion Not A Single Doubt, sire this year alone of Group 1 winners’ Scales Of Justice, Samadoubt, Kenedna and Qafila plus recent Villiers Stakes winner (G2) Quackerjack. His famous purchase of champion filly, the feisty grey Emancipation, also shaped subsequent generations with her descendants including Group 2 winning son Royal Pardon plus descendants such as Caulfield Cup winner Railings, dual Group 1 winning filly Virage De Fortune, six-time stakes-winner Avenue, Group 2 winner Magneto, Slapstick, Glasnost and UAE Oaks winner Raihana. Les was an unassuming, quiet man who didn’t let on too much about himself. He was married to Wendy who passed away in the early 2000’s and recently had a beautiful partner Hilma Else who was closest to him in his final days. His office manager Marjorie Manns had been with him over three decades and those who had done business with Les in the past such as Muskoka Farm’s Bob Lapointe and more recently, Andrew Reichard of Bluebloods magazine all contributed at Les’s funeral to pull together a better idea of the 75 year olds’ lifelong influence on racing and breeding, particularly in his beloved New South Wales.

Les’s funeral at Royal Randwick Racecourse was a fitting send off for a private man whose lifetime of work many people only really learnt about with his passing. The moving, yet informative service was attended by many industry participants, journalists Ray Thomas, Max Presnell, Andrew and Margaret Reichard, ATC board-member Julia Ritchie, fellow bloodstock agent Duncan Ramage, Jonathan D’Arcy from Inglis, TBNSW directors Peter Orton, Hamish Esplin and Caroline Searcy, executive officer Julianne Christopher and past presidents John Muir, Trevor Lobb and Tom Kelly. President of NSW Racehorse Owners’ Association Jane Henning was there, the son of another business partner Bob Logan, Richard paid his respects as did the trainer of the great Emancipation Neville Begg and his daughter, successful bloodstock agent Carmel Size. Emancipation’s jockey, now a trainer, Ron Quinton was joined by Biddy Oquist, the TBA’s James Peters, Turangga Farm’s Stuart Ramsey, members of Hawkesbury’s Australian Thoroughbred Breeders’ Club and fittingly Annie from the ATC who looked after Les’s feed requirements in the Randwick press room for years!
Dr Clive Allcock a Sydney psychiatrist specialising in gambling problems and a great friend to Les, fondly recounted Les’s regular success as a ‘place’ punter, usually coming out ahead over weeks and months of betting largely based on the breeding background of the horses he picked! Finally, Les’s partner in his latter years, Hilma Else brightened the room with her obvious affection for Les and a mischievous sparkle in her eye remembering how they had made each other laugh, with the warm memories only tempered by a rogue, escapee tear. The loss of Les Young leaves a big hole in the membership and committee of Thoroughbred Breeders’ NSW having been on the board since 2006 and executive officer from 2010 until just this year. Les may not have said much but when he spoke people listened and that gravitas, experience and sensibility will be very sadly missed by us all. Les really was one of a kind.
Bob Lapointe, the businessman who set up Les’s company Doncaster Bloodstock remembered Les as a “group 1 winner, a journalist, unassuming, understated, a gentleman, pedigree expert, conservative and a really good bloke.” Bob spoke of their trips overseas together and their incredible success in buying, breeding and trading some of the best throughbreds of the time culminating in the Nebo Lodge assault on the Sydney Trainers’ Premiership where the syndicate managed by Les with trainer Brian Mayfield Smith ended the great TJ Smith’s three-decade reign at the top.

TBNSW awards once again showcased the fact Australia’s greatest thoroughbred champions are sourced from the state’s prime breeding regions.

TBNSW President Stuart Lamont introduced the awards, with winners presented by Bred To Win’s Caroline Searcy and partnered sponsors including Goldners Horse Transport, Horsepower, G1 Goldmine, HQ Insurance and with assistance from the ATC and IRT. The Goldners Horse Transport NSW Small Breeder of The Year was the late Noel Leckie who bred three Group and Listed Winners in the 2018-19 Season, Houtzen, Most Important and Voodoo Lad. Accepting the award was Noel’s wife Julie Leckie, who said the award honoured his lifelong passion for racing and would have been Noel’s proudest moment in thoroughbred breeding. The Horsepower NSW Champion First Season Sire was won by Sidestep (Exceed and Excel) who stood his first season for Darley Australia at Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley of NSW. That season produced 21 runners and 6 winners of 10 races. Sidestep’s top stakes-winner was Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi, also bred by Darley, with his overall progeny earnings totalling over $2.5 million. Godolphin’s Kelvinside Stud Manager Barley Ward-Thomas proudly accepted the award for the Darley Stallions’ team, while Dan Fletcher was also in attendance, the owner of Queensland’s Telemon Thoroughbreds where Sidestep currently stands.
The HQ Insurance NSW Champion Sire award was presented to Arrowfield Stud for their three-time Champion Australian Sire, Snitzel. The son of Redoute’s Choice was also Champion Australian Sire for worldwide earnings the past two years. In the last racing season, Snitzel sired 346 runners for 180 winners of 290 races. With progeny earnings of over $24 million his top money earner, dual The Everest Champion, NSW-bred, Redzel was supported by many other stakes-winner throughout the year. Thoroughbred Breeders’ New South Wales congratulates all the winners and is extremely grateful to our valued sponsors as well as the Australian Turf Club for its hospitality and looks ahead to more racetrack success from NSW breeders in the 2020 Season.
The G1 Goldmine NSW Champion Broodmare of The Year award was accepted by Arrowfield Stud’s Alison Brassil for the deeds of St Therese (Dehere). Bred by Segenhoe Stud, and a stakes-winner of $234,000 herself, St Therese produced two group one winners in the past season at Arrowfield. Maid Of Heaven (Smart Missile) won the 2018 ATC Spring Champion Stakes and Castelvecchio (Dundeel) the 2019 ATC Champagne Stakes. Sadly, St Therese died recently at her Peppertree Farm base but Damien Kirwan and his team were left with a healthy filly foal. Campions of NSW Breeding

VALE MR PAUL WHELAN (TBNSW Committeeman 2007 to 2015) The Australian breeding and racing industry is mourning the passing of well-known racehorse breeder/owner and former NSW Government minister, Mr Paul Whelan, 75, following a long battle with illness.

“Paul was a visionary and was admired by all,” said Mr Peter V’landys AM, Racing NSW’s Chief Executive. “He was respectful to anyone he met, on any level, and always had a smile on his face. “Paul will be missed by everyone in the breeding and racing industry that had the pleasure of his acquaintance and we would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his family.” Mr Whelan was born and raised in Ashbury, a suburb of Sydney, and was the last of seven children. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1968 and barrister in 1988, then became an alderman on Ashfield Municipal Council from 1970 and was Mayor from 1971 to 1976. Paul went on to become NSW Minister for Consumer Affairs and Minister for Roads in 1981 and then Minister for Water Resources and Minister for Forests until April 1984 for the Neville Wran Government.
He was also Minister for Aboriginal Affairs in 1984 before becoming Minister for Police from April 1995 to November 2001 during the Bob Carr Government. Upon retirement from politics, Mr Whelan went into racehorse breeding and racing, and was proprietor of Luskin Park Stud, a boutique stud at Luskintyre in the Hunter Valley, and was also on the committee of Thoroughbred Breeders NSW for 8 years from 2007 to 2015. Paul bred some top-class performers including Foxwedge and Rock Classic, and also part-owned Group One winner Flying Artie with his long-time friend, Wilf Mula. “Paul was a great man and above all, a caring human being,” said Mr Mula. “We went to school together and once he got out of politics, Paul went into breeding racehorses which was his passion. “He actually got me into racing when he had Pegasus Queen with Bart Cummings. Paul had a good eye for horses and bought Flying Artie then told me I ‘had to come into the horse’ with him. “I’m glad I listened as Flying Artie was an outstanding galloper and is now an up and coming sire. Paul was an outstanding person and will be missed by many.” Paul Whelan is survived by wife Colleen and his extended family.
