PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the latest edition of the Breeders Update Dear Members,
THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS NSW LIMITED ABN: 70 003 403 656
We are again finding ourselves having to safely navigate through severe travel restrictions due to Covid for the upcoming breeding season and I would urge all breeders to be very mindful of the walk-on protocols that have been put in place by TBA, State associations and individual Stud farms.
President: Mr Stuart Lamont
Of course, we are very fortunate that this year’s sales broke records and racing has been so well managed continuing sustainability and employment for so many, as well as a constant stream of prize money back to owners. Employees and Owners are the back bone of this amazing industry.
Treasurer: Mr Paddy Power
During August there have been a series of breeders’ webinars that have been very well received and we are very appreciative of the input of Australia’s leading equine veterinarians and other industry professionals. All seminars were recorded and I would recommend breeders follow the links provided to access some very pertinent information leading into the season. Each season we look forward to the new boys on the block who will be covering for the first time in 2021 and this year we have an impressive line up with a brief run down on the merits of each stallion in this edition. We also have a submission from Graham Caves for the Les Young Writers’ Award and would urge other writers who share a great love of the thoroughbred to apply for this prestigious award. We are pleased to share with you several regular updates in this edition including a Bred To Win article, AgriFutures information and an article from the Federation of Bloodstock Agents. A reminder to breeders that BOBS bonuses are paid out to the owner of the broodmare that produce BOBS qualified winners. These bonuses are very generous and can certainly offset some of the costs associated with breeding. All relevant information is in this addition. I would like to thank our sponsored partnerships with Australian Turf Cub, Goldners Transport, G1 Goldmine, Horsepower, HQ insurance and IRT for there support to our association.

Coolmore pair, So You Think (High Chaparral) and Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Widden’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and the late Sebring (More Than Ready), Darley representative Exceed And Excel (Danehill)) and Vinery stallion All Too Hard (Casino Prince) completed the Leading Sires by Earnings’ top ten. The pacesetters had 105 individual stakes winners between them for combined prizemoney of a staggering $133 million. NSW-bred gallopers again showed the way in black type races in 2020-21.
Ole Kirk [Written Tycoon x Naturale]
Newly crowned Champion Australian Sire Written Tycoon hoisted his status to the highest level at the same time his NSW-based peers enjoyed life at the top in Australian stakes races in 2020-21.
Horses hailing from the state tallied 214 stakes wins, culminating with 20 Group 1 successes. Those feature races included the Newmarket Handicap (Zoutori, by Zoustar), VRC Victoria Derby (Johnny Get Angry, by Tavistock) and the VRC Victoria Oaks (Personal, by Fastnet Rock).
Twelve individual stakes-winners assisted Written Tycoon (Iglesia) to accumulate $17,035,983 in prizemoney and elevate him to General Leading Sire By Earnings for the season. Written Tycoon claimed the title for the first time after finishing in the top 10 on the table in the previous five seasons. The four-year reign of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) ended courtesy of his barn-mate Written Tycoon, who spent 12 months at Arrowfield Stud in NSW’s Hunter Valley before returning to Victoria to command a fee of $165,000 at Yulong Stud in 2021. Golden Rose (Gr 1 1400m) and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1 1600m) winner Ole Kirk led the charge for Written Tycoon, amassing $1,989,050 in stakes.
Zoutori [Zoustar x Atotori]
Written Tycoon finished more than $1.3 million clear of Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit). NSW stallions dominated the top 10. The retired Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) was third on the table, while another Arrowfield stallion, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) remained prominent in fourth spot.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2021
WINTER CARNIVAL IN REVIEW Zaaki’s rocky road to Group 1 glory reached its destination when the globetrotting gelding blazed a trail through Queensland’s Winter Carnival The son of Brazilian-bred Leroidesanimaux left Great Britain last year as a dual Group 3 winner but only one placing in his last five appearances abroad was not predicted to be a pathway to racing’s ultimate success. However, Zaaki completed his journey to the top of the mountain when he blitzed his rivals by seven lengths in the Doomben Cup (Gr 1 2000m). Zaaki’s performance was so breathtaking he earned early favouritism for the time-honoured Cox Plate (Gr 1 2040m) at Moonee Valley in October. Despite being unheralded, Zaaki’s introduction to Australia racing was hardly low key. Zaaki’s second appearance in the country resulted in finishing runner-up in the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick only to be disqualified for returning a positive swab to a restricted substance.
Fledgling trainer Annabel Neasham then journeyed north with Zaaki and the rest is history. Zaaki claimed the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2 1800m) at the Gold Coast before his Doomben Cup demolition and then completed the hat-trick in the Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) at Eagle Farm. The six-year-old’s pilgrimage has almost been as remarkable as his sire’s background. Leroidesanimaux (Candy Stripes) started his career in Brazil before he was sold to US interests and relocated to California as a four-year-old. Among his highlights were a Grade 1 victory at Santa Anita and track record-breaking performances at Hollywood Park and Saratoga. Leroidesanimaux initially stood at Stonewall Stud in Kentucky and was then transferred in 2013 to England where he was based at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket. Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup hero Animal Kingdom has been the standout of Leroidesanimaux’s progeny. Leroidesanimaux was represented by only two to race in Australia in 2020-2021 but with a perfect stakes-winning record he still managed to finish in the top 150 on the sires list by earnings with $1,725,075. While Zaaki was the success story of the Queensland carnival, there was no better feelgood story than Incentivise (Shamus Award). On March 27 this year, Incentivise was beaten 16 lengths into eighth spot in a Toowoomba maiden over 1850 metres. Fast forward three months and Incentivise won the Tatts Cup (Gr 3 2400m) by 12 lengths at Eagle Farm.
Vega One [Lope De Vega x One Funny Honey]
That was the sixth straight win for the gelding, who triumphed in his last four winter outings by an aggregate of more than 37 lengths. Tofane was crowned the winter queen following her successive Group 1 victories for Flemington trainer Michael Moroney. The daughter of Ocean Park stormed home to overshadow Vega One in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1 1400m) at Eagle Farm before completing the rare double in the Tatts Tiara (Gr 1 1400m) at the same track. Tofane boasts three Group 1’s among her seven wins from 22 starts. Vega One had his moment in the Queensland sun when he secured the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1 1300m) at Eagle Farm.
Zaaki [Leroidesanimaux x Kesara]
2020-2021 Australian Racing Year in Review continued
The win was the Lope De Vega gelding’s first at the highest level, although he had previously landed a more lucrative prize in taking out the $1 million Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast in 2020.
WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU Hungry Heart backed up her win in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1 2000m) with success in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1 2400m). The chestnut is from Harlech, who was unplaced at her only start but her first four dams are stakes-winners. Harlech’s sire Pivotol was represented in Sydney by the smart Irish-bred stayer Addeybb. Addeybb added a fourth Group 1 win to his resume when he upstaged Verry Elleegant in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
Tofane [Ocean Park x Baggy Green]
AUTUMN CARNIVAL IN REVIEW Verry Elleegant (Zed) set the scene for the Sydney autumn when she secured the first Group 1 of the carnival in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. The New Zealand-bred mare went on to become one of only two gallopers to win twice at the top tier during the carnival. Verry Elleegant also claimed the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1 2000m) at Rosehill at her next appearance for premier trainer Chris Waller. The daughter of Zed has accumulated a remarkable eight Group 1 victories – including the 2020 Caulfield Cup – in the space of two years. Verry Elleegant’s autumn heroics were matched by her beautifully bred stablemate Hungry Heart (Frankel).
Another top class performer with an Irish background, Sir Dragonet (Camelot) was not to be outdone, winning the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1 2400m) at Rosehill. Fellow imports Selino (Champs Elysees) and Cascadian (New Approach) also made their presence felt in elite company. Selino highlighted his staying prowess by triumphing in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1 3200m) at Randwick, while Cascadian stamped himself as one of Australia’s top milers with his win in the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1 1600m) at the same track. The remainder of the riches were evenly spread among sires with ranging profiles. Krone provided her sire Eurozone (Northern Meteor) with a highlight when she won the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill. Former US stallion Host was in the spotlight courtesy of Eduardo’s victory in the Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill. More Group 1 success came Eduardo’s way two months later with an all-the-way win in the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) during the Queensland carnival. Nicconi’s headline act Nature Strip was at his peak, landing the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick. Street Cry (Savatiano in the Gr 1 Canterbury Stakes), So You Think (Think It Over in the Gr 1 George Ryder Stakes), Sebring (Nettoyer in the Gr 1 Queen Of The Turf) and All Too Hard (Forbidden Love in the Gr 1 Surround Stakes) enjoyed their share of the spoils. New Zealand-bred gallopers also matched it with the best, with Verry Elleegant leading the charge. ATC Australian Derby winner Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry), Rosehill Guineas victor Mo’unga (Savabeel), Randwick Guineas hero Lion’s Roar (Contributer) and the All Aged Stakes star Kolding (Ocean Park) were others to the fly the flag for the Kiwis. Prolific winner Savatoxl gave Kuroshio (Exceed And Excel) the biggest success of his stud career when he won South Australia’s premier sprint event the Goodwood Hcp (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville.
Eduardo [Host x Blushing]
The five-year-old boosted his record to 16 wins from 28 outings in securing his first Group 1.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2021
Three-year-old Review Media Award (Shamus Award) penned the fairytale story of the season with her victory in the SAJC Australasian Oaks (Gr 1 2000m) at Morphettville. The filly was bred by Bowness Stud at Young in southern NSW and sold for a bargain basement price of $5000 at the Vobis Gold Yearling Sale in Melbourne. Media Award took her earnings beyond $300,000 with her third win from only six appearances. Shamus Award (Snitzel) reinforced his credentials as a sire of stayers when his daughter Duais was a comprehensive winner of the BRC Queensland Oaks (Gr 1 2200m). Duais was strongly fancied after finishing second in the ATC Australian Oaks. Krone [Eurozone x Soft Landing]
The leading sires by earnings in the three-year-old category closely resembled the general table. Written Tycoon also finished clearly on top, courtesy of Per’s feats. I Am Invincible was runner-up and Snitzel finished third, while Deep Field (Northern Meteor) was a creditable fourth.

Stay Inside [Extreme Choice x Nothin Leica Storm]
Two-year-old Review Extreme Choice made an auspicious start to his stud career when Stay Inside won the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill. Stay Inside is from the first crop of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and played a major role in him claiming the crown of leading first-season and 2YO sire by earnings. Extreme Choice finished unplaced behind Capitalist (Written Tycoon) in the 2016 Golden Slipper but won four of his eight starts, including the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley. In the 2021 edition of the Slipper, Capitalist’s son Profiteer dominated early markets but was beaten out of the placings as Stay Inside reigned in the $3.5 million event.
Profiteer [Capitalist x Athena Lass]
Stay Inside provided plenty of celebrations for his breeder, Kingstar Farm at Denman in NSW. Extreme Choice had three individual stakes winners to edge out his fellow first season sire Capitalist in the two-year-old title. Capitalist had 61 starters – for 20 winners and four black type performers – in stark contrast to Extreme Choice’s 15 runners for the season. Fellow newcomers Flying Artie (by Artie Schiller) and Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) made their presence felt in seventh and ninth spots respectively.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2021
NSW GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN THE THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY Racing NSW Country Fast Track for Progress The announcements in the NSW State Government budget handed down in June are significant for the NSW racing and breeding industries and in particular a tremendous result for Country Racing. This was largely possible thanks to the ongoing support of the NSW State Government and Racing Minister Kevin Anderson as they announced $67 million in industry investment in the State’s budget.
focused on regional NSW. This is yet another example of how we are actively supporting a regional renaissance, giving people in regional NSW access to the best quality amenities and recreation facilities. The funding to upgrade racetracks in regional NSW will mean more jobs for locals and more money coming into country towns through increased tourism, generated by the capacity to host more high-quality race meetings.”
Racing NSW CEO, Peter V’landys AM pointed out: “The $67 million package was not a handout from the government, but an investment strategy. I can assure you Dom Perrottet [NSW Treasurer] doesn’t give money out – we had to show a business case where for every dollar the government puts in, they get $1.60 back.”
The extent of the investment is far reaching for the industry and will support the strategy of country race clubs, to maintain and grow the footprint of racing in the regions through improved race day facilities, upgrades to training infrastructure and new stabling projects, that support the demand from industry participants in NSW.
“They’re going to get a substantial return on the investment,” he added.
These are exciting times for country racing. In addition to the $67m State Government investment, the prizemoney announcements earlier this year have already seen increases at Muswellbrook and Shoalhaven City Turf Club of almost $9 million. And the funding for Scone Race Club which includes upgraded on-course stabling and the new poly training surface will potentially see a 300 percent increase in the numbers of horses trained at the facility.
The New South Wales Government understands the considerable social and economic benefits provided by the thoroughbred racing industry, particularly in regional and rural NSW, hence their investment in the racing industry, in part related to the economic recovery from COVID-19. It’s reported the $67 million investment will be allocated towards racing and training infrastructure and patron facilities across a number of regional NSW race clubs. There have already been a number of announcements including a $20 million investment at Scone Race Club, $4 million at Muswellbrook for a multi-purpose racing and community function facility, as well as $3 million at Albury and $2.4 million at Tamworth for racing and training facility upgrades and stabling for the clubs. Other announcements include a $500,000 investment in drought proofing and irrigation upgrades at Queanbeyan, investment in stabling infrastructure at Moruya and the Sapphire Coast, facility upgrades for jockeys at the Shoalhaven City Turf Club, irrigation and water stage facilities at Coffs Harbour and an upgrade of the grandstand at Cootamundra. The thoroughbred industry looks forward to further announcements regarding country racing projects with the NSW Government, who is funding these upgrades, having control over the announcement of further upgrades. Minister Kevin Anderson remarked: “Thoroughbred racing is the lifeblood of many country towns, accounting for around 17,700 jobs in the regions, and it contributes $1.9 billion to the state’s economy.” NSW Deputy Premier and Nationals’ leader, John Barilaro said: “This is the largest investment by the NSW Government in racing infrastructure and it is entirely NSW Government Invests In The Thoroughbred Industry
NSW breeding the workforce of tomorrow The State Government investment complements the recent purchase of the Scone TAFE by Racing NSW and will help drive industry employment, provide job security and much needed skilled workers. The NSW Government Department of Education Training Services NSW provided $1.3 million in phase one of a Workforce Development Plan implemented in the Hunter Valley. The recently completed initial phase funded course fees, facilitators, trainers/assessors and trainee wage subsidies. The program was designed as one solution to address retention and upskilling of staff and to support new entrants to the industry, with the intention of having a positive impact on retention for both the existing and new members of the workforce. This creates a structured pathway for progressive career development and will be of profitable, productive value to both employee and employer. This workforce development project is designed to build on existing new entrant programs and the associated promotional campaigns that are responsible for attracting new staff to our industry such as Thoroughbred Breeders Australia “Fast Track” and Thoroughbred Industry Careers “Cadetship”. Some skills acquired are found to be transferrable within the racing and breeding sectors, with a few points
WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU
of difference relative to the breeding industry. Launching a career pathway and foundation for continued professional development assists in attracting and most importantly retaining new entrants to the industry. Short courses of nationally accredited units of competency in Supervisor, Leadership and Management were designed and delivered to 124 participants, these units form part qualifications towards the Certificate IV Horse Breeding, set to be available for completion in 2022. From the Leadership development offering, a focus on interpersonal skills includes communication, delegation, effectively managing people and ensuring a safe workplace. The participants were emerging supervisors, supervisors and managers from the farms. It is worth noting, Cert IV is the minimum qualification required to be considered for an international exchange program of graduated employees. Night Watch Foaling short courses held saw 20 participants receive free training ahead of the breeding season. Further to the courses offered in this phase, Traineeships in Horse Breeding and Agriculture Certificate III has 50 students enrolled, employers engaging in traineeships having access to fee free training and wage subsidies. The program has provided invaluable support to new and existing staff, who contribute to the support and training of the people who join the industry. Program co-ordinator Julianne Christopher says: “To grow a reliable and strong workforce, we must begin with aligning the values of the people that make it all possible”. “The Upper Hunter industry population allowed the size cohort of employees for the pilot, making it practical to deliver the courses via flexible and timely methods with a heavy focus on experiential face to face learning. This is the commencement of a five-year workforce development plan for the NSW breeding industry.” The format of the pilot has been intentionally focused on experiential learning. That is learning “by doing”; providing the opportunity to interact, ask questions and apply new skills in practice. Face-to-face delivery enables this style of learning and we have found it is most applicable to this cohort, with additional value of socialisation and mental health improvements seen. The people involved in the training do handson work, they are outside rather than sedentary and experiential learning suits them. The opportunity to interact and build a peer support network ‘off farm’ is a supplementary benefit, evident in feedback from the 150-plus participants.
The timing of the pilot, while not the preferred time of year for the industry, was scheduled to align with the requirements of the government funding. Having Bringing future short periods of training will be scheduled to align with the quieter times of the year, in between the sales and breeding seasons. However, the delivery of part qualifications in the current workforce shortage was preferred by the majority of participants and their employers. Longer term measurement of retention rates and feedback from the farms will be sought post pilot program completion. This will help us build on the lessons learnt from the pilot, and especially to recognise the format and frequency of training that suits the employers and employees. There is an opportunity to collaborate with Racing NSW (RNSW) to attract, develop and train a skilled workforce. The work to date and the proposed five-year plan aligns with the RNSW strategy. Development of the Equine Centre of Excellence in the Upper Hunter, incorporates education for racing and breeding participants, including an international standard student accommodation facility. “A proposed acquisition of the Hunter TAFE, together with an upgraded stable would pave the way for a Centre of excellence style academy in the heart of Australia’s horse capital”. Racing NSW 2020 Annual Report racing and breeding working together would ensure the numbers to make this training feasible in the future. The aim is to create and build on an industry standard education program that also creates longevity in the workforce. To elevate industry education and qualification standards to match international standards and look at international exchange programs to incentivise workforce growth and sustainability. This will ensure a workforce pipeline at all levels, attracting new skilled and unskilled people to both the thoroughbred racing and breeding industries. Racing NSW 2020 Annual Report

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2021
BRED TO WIN - IN SPRING
While the world juggles the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in New South Wales the breeding industry has been fortunate to have been able to continue its business, with plenty of relief surrounding the fact Racing NSW has steadfastly kept racing going in the state providing a return of income for owners, with 70% of racehorses owned by breeders.
Caroline Searcy - Prized Icon - Angus Lamont
Promoting the breeding industry is hugely important at any time and Caroline Searcy’s Bred To Win has provided a wonderful visual presentation of the new sires for 2021 in full HD vision on Sky Thoroughbred Central throughout 2021. While most thoroughbred breeders are in a demographic that love seeing the magnificent new sires and stunning thoroughbred studs on their big screen televisions, the program is also sent to a wider audience of viewers around the world. Bred To Win features in TDN AusNZ newsletters every Thursday and is directemailed to an extensive list of breeders, bloodstock agents, trainers and sales companies around the globe. Stories are also pushed out via Twitter and Facebook and on Caroline Searcy’s Youtube channel and gain a lot of traction amongst a new generation of viewers. The program is funded through the breeding industry with sponsors including major sponsor Inglis, Arrowfield Stud, G1 Goldmine, Aushorse, Kooringal Stud, Cambridge Stud and Hannover Lodge and Searcy is relieved the program has been able to continue. “The costs involved in television production are exorbitant with even the camera expenses in the thousands of dollars a day, plus editing, sourcing race footage and promoting the program. It’s so important the industry does have a voice on national television, with so much emphasis placed on wagering in the racing industry. Having a platform that educates new owners about the breeding component of the racing industry and explains how it works, is vital in developing Bred to Win in Spring
a wider understanding, that breeding really is the greatest gamble of them all!” “It’s also an avenue to keep racing fans involved with their favourite racehorses when they retire and from a thoroughbred welfare point of view there is no better advertisement to the wider world about how much these horses are loved when you see the world’s best conditions in which they are cared for away from the racetrack.” New South Wales’ stallions featured on Bred To Win so far this season include Coolmore Stud’s dual Group 1 winning 2YO King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice), Vinery Stud’s Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas’ winner Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Widden Stud’s jet-propelled Anders (Not A Single Doubt) and Kingstar Farm’s Silver Slipper winner Time To Reign (Time For War). Stallions to be featured in coming weeks include Admire Mars (Daiwa Major) at Arrowfield Stud plus a look at the first foals of Castelvecchio (Dundeel) and a catch up with one of Australia’s favourites, So You Think (High Chaparral) at Coolmore Stud. The Aushorse News segment provides an important video update on the stories of the week including feature racing results and the background to the big winners. And the Inglis Graduate of The Week profiles the back stories through the sales ring and beyond of their high class sales success stories. The program also includes interviews about some of the major issues in the breeding industry such as training

and retaining staff, with both the Aushorse Fast Track program and Thoroughbred Industry Careers profiled, encouraging new staff to consider a career in racing and breeding. Searcy speaks of the passion for the industry that extends beyond those who work within it, “Showing the racetrack stars people have followed and loved, including our favourite race mares and their new foals, plus the magnificent stud properties themselves is a much-loved part of Bred To Win for thousands of racing fans around Australia. “Sometimes we take it for granted working regularly on these properties, but I will never forget the first time I visited the stunning Arrowfield Stud, Widden, Coolmore, Darley and other showpiece properties.” “It’s also a highlight to feature farms such as Kooringal Stud near Wagga Wagga and Twin Hills Stud at Cootamundra, fabulous family-owned Australian properties with new history being created.”
It proves that racing and breeding is not only filled with generational workers but can attract people with no prior background in the industry. Bred To Win’s Premier screening is on Monday night at 7.30pm eastern on Sky Thoroughbred Central (Foxtel Channel 528) and the program is streamed live on the home page of the racingnsw.com.au website. Searcy’s thoroughbred re-homing program “Thoroughbreds Are Go” returns later in spring with great information for owners and the equestrian world about successfully rehoming thoroughbreds away from racing. The industry has so many great stories and stunning thoroughbreds to showcase, don’t miss them on Bred To Win and Thoroughbreds Are Go in coming months! Arrowfield Stud’s “The Horse Who Made You Love Racing” has become an extremely popular segment highlighting industry participants who forged a career in racing and breeding purely through falling in love with one specific racehorse, usually in their childhood or teenage years.

Coming full circle:
Fact vs fiction:
The AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Advisory Panel is excited to welcome thoroughbred horse breeders, Queenslander Michael Grieve and Victorian Mike Becker, to the Advisory Panel bringing decades of expertise to drive the industry’s focus on research and development.
Critical to protecting the welfare of thoroughbred horses and the integrity of the industry is efficiently detecting the illegal practice of gene editing. Gene editing, a method of gene doping used to artificially and illegally enhance performance in human and animal athletes, is now on the agenda for the thoroughbred horse industry.

RD&E investment July - September 2020 the extent of attaining a PhD after many years as an equine clinician. It is this mixed background, adapting in industry and research, that makes Catherine such a valuable member of the Advisory Panel and wider industry.
Catherine Chicken has worn many hats and embodies adaptability – the key to a bright future for agriculture In celebration of International Day of Rural Women, AgriFutures are shining a light on some of the incredible women from regional, rural and remote parts of Australia who we get to work with at AgriFutures Australia. One of these incredible women is Catherine Chicken. Catherine is the Deputy Chair of our AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Advisory Panel. It was a winding path that led Catherine to this position, but in Catherine’s eyes, such adaptability is what makes women key to the future of agriculture. Catherine was born and raised in suburbia, but a brief stint in country New Zealand as a child inspired her to pursue a rural lifestyle as a veterinarian. Her thirty plus year career as an equine clinician took her to Scone in the Hunter Valley, after time spent in mixed practice in rural NSW and equine practice in Newmarket, UK. More recently, Catherine has developed an appreciation for pathology and laboratory work, and a strong interest in facilitating equine research, even to
“I, like most others in my industry, love working with horses. Spending time day-to-day in the presence of such majestic animals is a pure joy. I have always gained significant satisfaction in seeing problems addressed and solutions found. So, segueing into research that addresses issues of importance for the thoroughbred industry was not really surprising and continues to be rewarding and satisfying,” said Catherine. “Having had experience on both sides of the fence, I can see what the biggest issues are for the thoroughbred industry and through my work with the Advisory Panel, can connect the right researchers to problems they can solve. A lot of problems get resolved through relationships and connecting the right people,” continued Catherine. Recognising how challenging the veterinary profession can be, Catherine is currently also working with the Australian Veterinary Association as a mentor for young veterinarians, adding to the list of accomplishments and adaptations over her career. Catherine believes that the array of opportunities she has had over her career have been shaped by her changing interests and that there are many opportunities for women in agriculture. “Opportunities abound for women, and men for that matter, in agriculture at the moment with ag being one of the main pillars of the Australian economy. The changing face of ag in response to challenges brought about particularly by climate change mean the traditional
RD&E investment committed from 1 October 2020 model of ag will continue to adapt and, by doing so, provide previously unrecognised opportunities for women in the sector. A strong future for Australian ag and the changing world in which we live means there will be on-going roles in all sectors of ag for women who are driven to see a future that is sustainable and equitable,” said Catherine. Catherine believes that the ability of women to adapt quickly is key to their future success in agriculture. “Women are, and will continue to be, a big part of the horse industry and should aim high, to become leaders in their chosen fields. By doing so, they give confidence for others to follow. Women are well placed as lateral thinkers and problem solvers, given most have had to adapt to changing roles throughout their lives. Therefore, women are well suited to finding solutions to the large and difficult problems facing agriculture and humanity more broadly, by virtue of their ability to think outside the square.” Catherine’s advice to women wanting to enter the horse industry is to just ask. “If you feel strongly about wanting to work in the horse industry, or in ag more generally, there are ample opportunities to do so. In all facets of the industry from stud work to racing, as well as in RD&E, there are many opportunities for young people to get involved. Don’t be afraid to reach out to express your interest through industry bodies such as the Thoroughbred Breeders Associations and even Agrifutures Australia – a phone call could change your future direction. The Les Young Writers’ Award
WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU He went to stud in 1955 at Riverview Stud, Toolamba, Victoria and after having the speedy two-year-old Hydrell (Canonbury Stakes, Byron Moore Stakes) put his name quickly on the map, he produced only two other lifetime stakes winners, namely the filly Fire Band (Wakeful Stakes, Sandown Guineas) and Cruiser (Geelong Derby Trial Stakes). Persian Lyric’s stud brochure (pictured) was a lovely colourful effort by the Holbrook Stud in the Widden Valley of NSW, to where he retired in 1963. It also contained his full (placed only) racing record and pictures of several of his wins. As a racehorse Persian Lyric was top drawer. He raced against two champions of the turf in Sky High and Wenona Girl, so the fact that he beat them more than once and won amongst other races, the AJC Derby, Canterbury Guineas, Queensland Derby, the AJC invitation Stakes (a would have been Group 1 of its time) and had a phenomenal win in the Stradbroke Handicap in 1961, speaks emphatically of his class.
In Days Gone By By Graham Caves
In days gone by, in a far less electronic era, when a horse retired to stud there were no brilliant glossy booklets, DVDs or USB sticks for the studmaster to announce the wares and the prowess of their stallions. There were advertisements in newspapers and magazines, of course, and some of these were excellently done but otherwise there were only the individual stud cards, pamphlets, leaflets or brochures, modestly produced in all sorts of ways to advertise the sires of the day.
Sadly, he too proved uncommercial as a stallion. His best progeny were Broadway Boy (Newcastle Cup), good sprinter Let’s Fly (Clissold Handicap), Bon Rosa and Gleniffer Lad (won now Listed races in WA), Prince of Persia (Toowoomba Cup) and his best, the staying mare Regal Jane (AJC Summer Cup and Queen’s Cup, STC Cup and Tattersall’s Club Cup). These were the only stakes winners by Persian Lyric. Two excellent stud brochures for us to remember two excellent racehorses.
Two fine racehorses who did receive the benefit of a splendidly produced stud brochure, for the time, were Hydrogen and Persian Lyric. The Hydrogen brochure (pictured) was almost a book. Twenty pages of pictures, statistics, race finishes – when he won of course – breeding lineage and his full racing record. Hydrogen was the best horse in Australia for a time. He took over that mantle from the retiring Dalray and held court until along came Carioca to knock him off his pedestal. Hydrogen won the Hobartville Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, Craven Plate, Caulfield Guineas, Victoria Derby, the AJC and VRC St.Legers and a Rosehill Cup as a threeyear-old. As an older horse he won 15 weight-for-age races, including two Cox Plates another Craven Plate, a Mackinnon Stakes and also won a Brisbane Cup. The pity was that he, as a stallion, after a promising early start, proved unsuccessful. The Les Young Writers’ Award

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2021
FEDERATION OF BLOODSTOCK AGENTS AUSTRALIA The Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia Limited (FBAA) was formed in 1988 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, integrity and services of Bloodstock Agents throughout Australia, ensuring clients are best represented in all business dealings. To be eligible for the FBAA, Members’ primary public-facing role must be as an independent Australian-based Bloodstock Agent. There are currently 28 accredited members and 2 associate members who are available to assist in the sale and purchase of bloodstock as well as assisting in matters pertaining to Bloodstock valuations, consultancy, management, mating advice, insurance, shipping and other related matters. Since the establishment of the Federation in 1988 the membership base has had and continues to have many good people involved, representing an excellent cross section of experience and success in all facets of the industry. In recent times there was an over-riding feeling from our members that the FBAA needed to re-sharpen our focus on a number of key elements within the Federation. These included, among other factors, a more crystallised understanding of what the Federation stood for; re-setting membership criteria; establishing clear and defined levels of accountability by updating our constitution and code of conduct; and the establishment of a complaints panel system that gives further assurance of integrity and professionalism. (The complaints panel is made up of the FBAA President, and two independent industry figures - Vin Cox, and Hamish Esplin). The bulk of the heavy lifting in establishing these changes has been undertaken by President Craig (Boomer) Rounsefell carrying out a lot of work behind the scenes, and it has also been heartening to see the unified and energised FBAA board comprising Craig, Dave Mee, Louis Le Metayer, Grant Burns, Damon Gabbedy, Suman Hedge and Lenny Russo assist in enacting these changes and providing structure and new ideas to help drive the FBAA forward.
Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia
Since the implementation of the new Membership criteria, code of ethics and constitution there have been seven new members join the FBAA, bringing a wealth of additional knowledge and experience to the group. Special mention must be made of John Foote and Simon Vivian re-joining the membership ranks, both having been founding members in 1988. The standing and respect both John and Simon have within the industry is second to none and they are in many ways the bench mark we strive to be as Bloodstock Agents. To have them re-join the Federation subsequent to the changes being made is strong validation that the FBAA is steering in the right direction. There is plenty of work to do as an Association, and being part of a vibrant, commercial Bloodstock marketplace in Australia, the FBAA are working on numerous ways to assist those within the industry and assisting new participants to learn more from our members. An initiative launched is the FBAA podcast aimed to inform and educate both those people in the game or those on the periphery of the industry wishing to know more about the ins and the outs the dos and the do nots. Each month two FBAA members discuss a range of relevant industry topics in a professional yet lighthearted manner.
