PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the latest edition of the Breeders Update. Dear Members, With the ever changing and restrictive world that we are currently living in, we can be very grateful that the racing industry in NSW has been relatively unaffected compared to other pursuits. The lessons learnt from the EI outbreak in 2007 have held us in good stead, with excellent management from all involved at RNSW, along with the support of Federal and State governments. Having just witnessed a very different online Easter yearling sale, it is apparent that the Australian yearlings are again in high demand both nationally and internationally with buyers from Ireland, Japan, Macau, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and of course Australia and New Zealand helping to ensure an extremely strong average. The Chairman’s and Easter Broodmare sales have also been held under similar conditions with some extraordinary results including the sale of top lot, In Her Time, selling for $2,000,000. Congratulations to Inglis, who in a constantly changing environment, encouraged vendors to deliver quality footage of their drafts to give buyers the confidence to purchase. TBNSW board member Caroline Searcy provided live and invaluable information on the yearlings as they were presented online and is to be congratulated for adding atmosphere to the sale for which vendors were very grateful. The 2020 sales will prove virtually impossible to forget. We warmly welcome the 14 new boys to breeding including Brutal, Calyx, Castelvecchio, Cosmic Force, Exceedance, Magna Grecia, McLaren, Microphone, Pierata, Tassort, Too Darn Hot, Unite And Conquer, Yes Yes Yes, and Zousain. Our website lists all available NSW stallions, there are certainly some great opportunities for all budgets.
A new five part series “Thoroughbreds Are Go” premiered on Sky Thoroughbred Central. Produced and hosted by Caroline Searcy, the program offers insight into the rehoming of former racehorses, detailing different off track pursuits whilst promoting equine welfare. Showcasing the great athleticism of our Australian thoroughbreds and their adaptability to take on a range of equestrian futures, assisting racing owners with pathways to rehoming, educating the equine community on husbandry and retraining of the thoroughbred. TBNSW is proud to announce the ‘Les Young Writers’ Award’ in memory of recently passed industry stalwart, life member and board member Les Young. Les was passionate about the thoroughbred and researched his articles meticulously. This award is open to current and aspiring writers who also share a great love of the thoroughbred. Other items of interest in this Update edition include our regular Timeform review of NSW horses, NSW bred stakes winners here and overseas, AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horse Project update and Nutrition advice for growing young horses post purchase at yearling sales. I would like to thank our EO Julianne Christopher for her continued great work and enthusiasm towards TBNSW as well as our board members who have a great wealth of knowledge and commitment.

TIMEFORM REVIEW
Of the 2020 Autumn Carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne Article C Phelan, photos courtesy of Mark Bradley and Sportpix.
Older Spinter/Milers The VRC Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Gr.1 (1000m) saw the great mare Black Caviar return to Flemington for a race many thought was at Nature Strip’s (Nicconi) mercy. He was outgunned by super consistent Gytrash (Lope de Vega), stalwart Redzel (Snitzel) and flying three-year-old Loving Gaby (I am Invincible). If fans were concerned they needn’t have been, upon a return to Sydney, Nature Strip dominated the Challenge Stakes Gr.2 (1000m) before winning the T.J Smith Gr.1 (1200m) beating Santa Ana Lane (Lope de Vega), Redzel, Pierata (Pierro) and Tofane (Ocean Park) in a stellar field.
Nature Strip (Nicconi x Strikeline)
Older Middle Distance Horses Some of the biggest winners over the Sydney and Melbourne carnivals were broadcasters with Sky Channel proving one of the most popular weekend Foxtel channels and Racing.com and Channel 7 enjoying large increases in viewer numbers – and the fans were not disappointed with some sensational racing. Whilst the Covid pandemic put English racing on hold, Australian racing, perhaps due to lessons learned during the EI outbreak of 2007, weathered the storm much to the relief of local participants and visiting trainer William Haggas. The Haggas-trained Young Rascal (Intello) won the Manion Cup Gr.3 (2400m) before finishing unplaced in the Sydney Cup Gr.1 (3200m) behind Etah James (Raise The Flag). Meanwhile his other galloper Addeybb (Pivotal) was one of only three dual group one winners in Sydney joining fellow import Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy) and two-year-old King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice). Addeybb won both the Ranvet Stakes Gr.1 (2000m) and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes Gr.1 (2000m) under Tom Marquand defeating the top rated mare Verry Elleegant (Zed) on both occasions.
Tofane would get her chance to claim a group one late in the Sydney carnival after placing behind I Am Excited (Snitzel) in the The Galaxy Gr.1 (1100m). She claimed the All Aged Stakes Gr.1 (1400m) by the narrowest of margins from defending All Aged champion and Aquis Stud’s new stallion Pierata. Not seen in Sydney having raced through the Perth Carnival before Melbourne was another star Pierro galloper Regal Power (Pierro). Having claimedhis first group one in the Railway Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) in November the four-year-old miler arrived in Melbourne and split Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars) and Vow and Declare (Declaration of War) in the Australian Cup Gr.1 (2000m). Regal Power backed up a week later in the worlds richest mile race defeating three-year-old Superstorm (Sebring) and ten time group one winner Melody Belle (Commands) in the $5,000,000 All Star Mile.
Chris Waller trained Very Elleegant did manage to fly the local flag for a well deserved and dominant victory in the Tancred Stakes (2400m) rating 123 as well as a close second to tough kiwi galloper Te Akau Shark in the Chipping Norton Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) in February. Imported by Newgate Stud, Con Te Partito was retired to stud last year but failed to get in foal and was put back into work with Waterhouse and Bott and provided two of their three individual Group One winners. The 6yo mare won the Coolmore Classic Gr.1 (1500m) as well as the Queen Of The Turf Coolmore Legacy Gr.1 (1600m).

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2020
Another runner not seen in Sydney or Melbourne during the Autumn was last year’s Doncaster Mile Gr.1 winner and new Newgate stallion Brutal. Whilst last year’s runner up, Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) was able to claim this seasons George Ryder Stakes Gr.1 (1500m), Brutal was retired due to Covid restrictions hampering his planned campaign. This year’s Doncaster Mile Gr.1 (1600m) could not have been more memorable with a pizza-loving, beer drinking mare called Nettoyer (Sebring) winning the time honoured Randwick mile for trainer Wendy Roche from Star of the Seas (Ocean Park) and three-year-old Brandenburg (Burgundy). The Invermein bred mare provided both Roche and jockey James Innes Jnr with their maiden Group One victory.
Yes Yes Yes (Rubick x Sin Sin Sin)
Three-year-olds The Autumn Carnival had hardly begun when news came through of the premature retirement of top rating three-year-old and $14 million Everest (Gr.1 1200m) winner, Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) to Coolmore Stud. There was a real buzz about the crop of three-year-old sprinters leading into the Autumn and despite losing Yes, Yes, Yes, it didn’t take long for the three-year-olds to impress the against the older horses over various distances at both the Melbourne and Sydney Carnivals. Arrowfield sales graduate, Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) won the first group one of the Melbourne Carnival defeating the older horses in the C.F Orr Stakes (Gr.1 1400m) and soon after top colt Bivouac (Exceed and Excel) and the exceptional filly Loving Gaby (I am Invincible) began to make their presence felt. Timeform’s highest rated three-year-old of the Autumn and season thus far is Godolphin’s Bivouac. The son of Exceed and Excel came into the Melbourne Autumn having claimed the Run To The Rose (ATC Gr.2 1400m) and Golden Rose (Gr.1 1400m) defeating Yes Yes Yes in addition to a close second to Vinery Stud’s new stallion, Exceedance (Exceed and Excel) in the Coolmore Stakes (Gr.1 1200m).
Bivouac (Exceed And Excel x Dazzler)
Bivouac’s two and a half length victory in the VRC Newmarket Handicap Gr.1 (1200m) over fellow three year old flyer Loving Gaby and older Gytrash (Lope de Vega) was his fourth Stakes win of the season and earned a peak rating of 127, a mark not bettered by a 3yo since successful stallions Pierro and All Too Hard in 2012/13. With several of his contemporaries retiring to Stud duties in 2020, the dual group one winning Bivouac looks very well placed to further enhance his credentials among Australia’s best sprinters before he too heads to the breeding shed.
Exceedance (Exceed And Excel x Bonnie Mac)
A week after the three-year-old Newmarket quinella, Flemington put on one of the races of the season when NZ 2000 Guineas Gr.1 winner Catalyst (Darci Brahma) met the Baramul graduate Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) in the C.S Hayes Stakes Gr.3 (1400m). Rarely does a race live up to the hype but this occasion exceeded all expectations as the Gerry Harvey bred Alligator Blood prevailed after an unforgettable battle with the kiwi star. The pair were to meet again in a fortnight later in the million dollar VRC Australian Guineas Gr.1 (1600m) where David Vandyke trained Alligator Blood, as a warm favourite, won his first Group One and the first for his sire All Too Hard who had himself been an Australian Guineas favourite but was scratched on race morning.

Castelvecchio (Dundeel x St Therese)
WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU In what would become the new normal, the usual bustling atmosphere of Friday night racing at Moonee Valley became an eerie experience in the absence of a crowd under new Covid restrictions. The empty stands didn’t detract from a quality MVRC Willaim Reid Gr.1 (1200m) as the lucky few on course witnessed a repeat of the Newmarket Hcp trifecta with top rated 3yo filly Loving Gaby taking the honours ahead of Bivouac and Gytrash. In three Melbourne starts, the slick Kia Ora Stud graduate was third behind Gytrash and Redzel (Snitzel) in the Lightning Stakes Gr.1, second in the Newmarket and won the William Reid Stakes Gr.1 before heading to Sydney for her in what would be her sole unplaced run on a heavy track in the T.J Smith Stakes Gr.1 (1200m). In contrast to last year where there were four fillies in the Timeform top 20 three-yearolds, Loving Gaby was the only filly featured for 2020 and confirms her as one of the best 3yo sprint fillies of recent years. Last year’s joint top rated two-year-old Castelvecchio (Dundeel) exceeded his juvenile rating of 121 by following up his world class placing behind Lys Gracieux in the MVRC Cox Plate Gr.1 (2040m) with his second Group One victory in the Rosehill Guineas Gr.1 (2000m) defeating Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock) and Reloaded (Snitzel). Shadow Hero (Pierro) had lowered the colours of Castelvecchio in the Spring Champion Stakes last year and did so again in the Randwick Guineas Gr.1 (1600m) rating 118 but it was Castelvecchio that would emerge victorious a fortnight later in the highly rated Rosehill Gardens edition to cement his place amongst the top rated three-year-olds of the Autumn and season. A dual Group One winner having won the Champagne Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) as a two-year-old, Castelvecchio was always destined for the covering barn and will stand alongside his sire at Arrowfield Stud this year. Being by Dundeel (High Chaparral) out of the multiple stakes winning and producing Dehere mare, St. Therese, Castelvecchio is free of Danehill blood and is assured of great support from quality mares so much is expected of him at Stud. Several other exceptionally tough threeyear-olds emerged during the rain affected Sydney Autumn. Top middle distance fillies Funstar (Adelaide) and Probabeel (Savabeel) had quinellaed the ATC Flight Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) in the Spring and history repeated on their Autumn return in the Surround Stakes Gr.1 (1400m) in late February. The
kiwi trained, but predominantly Sydney raced, Probabeel turned the tables on Funstar that day but the local filly quickly gained her revenge in the Phar Lap Stakes Gr.2 (1500m) a fortnight later with another one-two finish ahead of colt Quick Thinker (So You Think). Both fillies featured prominently again in the Vinery Stakes Gr.1 (2000m) at Rosehill but were upstaged by the tough WaterhouseBott filly Shout The Bar (Not a Single Doubt) which simply refused to be headed in the familiar colours of Frank & Christine Cook. Sold through Newhaven Park, Shout The Bar was bred by Ron Finemore and Planette Thoroughbreds giving them their first Group One winner as breeders. The final day of the Rosehill Carnival also saw the return to the winner’s stall of Quick Thinker (So You Think) in the Tulloch Stakes Gr.2 (2000m). The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman trained colt would go on to claim ATC Australian Derby Gr.1 (2400m) at Royal Randwick seven days later. Despite the heavy tracks, Quick Thinker wasn’t the only three-year-old to tough out impressive victories on successive Saturdays. The James Cummings trained Colette (Hallowed Crown) progressed from a set weights Class 1 win at Newcastle in February to claim the Adrian Knox Stakes Gr.3 (2000m) and back up seven days later to claim the ATC Australian Oaks Gr.1 (2400m) defeating Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) and Quintessa (Pierro) on both occasions. Another successful filly stringing together Stakes success was the well travelled Rubisaki (Rubick) who rated 112 and remained undefeated in her five Autumn starts. A first up win at Flemington in late summer proved the perfect spring board for victory in the rich $1,000,000 Inglis Sprint at Warwick Farm in February. A return trip to Flemington for the Ian Smith bred filly yielded an impressive win in the Kewney Stakes Gr.2 (1400m) before coming back to Randwick to claim both the P.J Bell Stakes Gr.3 (1200m) and the James Carr Stakes Gr.3 (1400m).
Two-year-olds In what proved to be a prophetic start to the two-year-old Carnival in Melbourne, the first of the Blue Diamond lead ups produced two of the seasons top rated youngsters. The Anthony Freedman trained, Godolphin colt Hanseatic (Street Boss) won the colts division of the Blue Diamond Preview L (1000m) in fine style defeating subsequent Champagne Stakes Gr.1 runner up Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock). Hanseatic would go on to win the Blue Diamond Prelude Gr.3 (1100m) a fortnight later over Rulership (I am Invincible) and Rathlin (Fastnet Rock) before finding only one better in the seasons first two-year-old feature, the Blue Diamond Stakes Gr.1 (1200m). Finishing the carnival with a rating of 116, Hanseatic’s Timeform rating was only matched or bettered by the three Group One winners of the season thus far, Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa), top rated colt Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and dual group one winner Kings Legacy (Redoute’s Choice). A week before the Blue Diamond a promising colt by the name of Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) burst onto the scene in fine style in the Talindert Stakes L (1100m) at Flemington. From the family of Black Caviar owned by Neil Werrett and co, Ole Kirk signalled he was a horse to follow with an impressive finishing burst through traffic. The first two-year-old group one of 2020 had an international flavour with the Japanese conceived, Arrowfield Stud raised, Tagaloa winning the Blue Diamond Stakes impressively for trainers Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young. WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU VRC Maribyrnong Plate Gr.3 (1000m) in November, the son of Lord Kanaloa won his only other start in the Spring before a close first up fourth behind Hanseatic in the Blue Diamond Preview Gr.3. Despite racing three wide the trip and being challenged over the last furlong, Tagaloa proved too strong in the Blue Diamond Gr.1 holding off the aforementioned Hanseatic and class fillies Personal (Fastnet Rock) and Away Game (Snitzel) close behind. On the same day Tagaloa was claiming his maiden Group One in Melbourne, Sydney two-year-old racing was heating up with the return of the evenutal Golden Slipper winner Farnan bouncing back from his only defeat in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic to comfortably win the Silver Slipper Gr.2 (1100m) over Global Quest (More Than Ready) and North Pacific (Brazen Beau). The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained Farnan would meet the Blue Diamond winner at his next outing in the ATC Todman Stakes Gr.2 (1200) and never looked like being headed with Hugh Bowman taking the initiative, leading and kicking strongly over the rise with Tagaloa working home into a clear second but beaten almost two lengths. The ATC Golden Slipper is an always momentous and despite the absence of the usual capacity crowd on course, this season proved no different. Like the rest of us, trainer Gai Waterhouse watched from home due to Covid restrictions as her charge Farnan provided her a record seventh Golden Slipper victory and Adrian Bott his first. The victory was also a breakthrough for jockey Hugh Bowman having ridden Microphone into second last year, one of several previous near misses. Bowman rode Farnan positively from barrier 12 to leave no doubt of his colts dominance by fighting off arguably the most consistent two-year-old Away Game by two lengths with John Thompson’s Mamaragan (Wadjina) third and Tagaloa in fourth. We wouldn’t see Farnan again following the Slipper, he finished the season as the top rated two-year-old and highest rated two-year olds since Newgate stallion pair Extreme Choice and Capitalist in 2016. The lead up to the season’s next feature, the ATC Sires Produce Gr.1 (1400m) was the stuff of dreams for NSW breeder Wilf Mula who had an interest in three runners in the Group One event. Mula’s Aston Bloodstock bred, sold and bought back into the Skyline Stakes Gr.2 (1200m) winner and Slipper placegetter Mamaragan, as well as having an interest in the Newgate Stallion Syndcate runners Aim (Star Witness) and Bartley by Written Tycoon - newly located to Arrowfield Stud. Having just his third start, Mamaragan was the best of the three and duly replicated his Slipper efforts finishing with another Group One third (rating 112) behind the Redoute’s Choice pair Kings Legacy (116) and Pago Pago Stakes Gr.3 winner Prague (115). King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) was bred by Kevin Maloney’s Segenhoe Thoroughbreds and sold for $1,400,000 to astute judge James Harron, so certainly had a lot to live up to. Under the patient guidance of Peter & Paul Snowden and Slipper winning jockey Hugh Bowman the blueblood colt did just that laying claim to some top honours by consolidating his ATC Sires Produce Gr.1 (1400m) win on a heavy track with an impressive victory in the ATC Champagne Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) on a good surface. The Randwick mile is a time honoured test at any age and King’s Legacy had a job to do chasing down leader Glenfiddich in the straight whilst holding off Ole Kirk who had settled at the rear. King’s Legacy proved too strong to the line providing Hugh Bowman with the triple crown of Sydney’s two-year-old majors and partowners Coolmore Stud with a very attractive stallion of the future. King’s Legacy is out of multiple stakes-placed Hussonet mare Breakfast In Bed who is a half sister to Oohood (I am Invincible)
Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa x Vasilissa)
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt x Tallow)
who won the Flight Stakes Gr.1 (1600m) and placed herself in the Sire’s Produce, Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond when third top rated two-year-old of her season (117). A two-year-old filly every bit as consistent as Oohood and perhaps the benchmark for this year’s crop is the aforementioned Away Game (Snitzel). The only filly in the top ten Timeform ratings at 114, Away Game travelled interstate five times for her eight starts and proved consistently hard to beat. She dominated the Widden Stakes Gr.3 (1100m) at Randwick following her impressive Magic Millions victory, before finishing on the placegetters heels in the Blue Diamond Gr.1 having raced four wide the trip. She returned to Sydney to finish second the Golden Slipper Gr.1 behind top colt Farnan prior to closing out the Sydney carnival with another convincing Randwick win in the Percy Sykes Gr.2 (1200m) over Vangelic (Vancouver) and See You Soon (Siyouni).

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2020
AFTER THE SALES – PRE-TRAINING WINNERS Article Dr David Wood BVSc, MRCVS (Horsepower Nutrition Specialist)
Education for the yearling requires desensitization to upsetting stimuli. We want a stable composed animal, relaxed and receptive to training, not one that is all muscle and no brain, hot and excitable and ready to explode without thinking. Achieving that is down to the skill of the handlers but one of the drivers of a hot fizzy temperament is energy intake, especially energy in the form of starch.
Easter Yearling Lot 212 (Zouster x Solar Charged) $1.1M
The thoroughbred yearling leads an easy life hanging out with his peers after weaning followed by a sales prep period of being spoiled with optimum nutrition, basic education, rugging, grooming and stabling, to produce a primped and pampered promising athlete for the sales ring. After that, the time has come to begin preparation for life as a racehorse, to start earning his keep and fulfill the hopes of his owners and trainers. This transition from stud farm to trainer’s yard over a few week’s education and work is stressful, both mentally and physically for the young horse who basically wants to please, but simply doesn’t know what to do. As the workload rises to begin developing muscle strength and fitness along with the skills needed to race, the nutritional needs of this yearling should be managed to optimize results and reduce the likelihood of injury. There are perhaps three areas where nutrition can now play a part in turning the young novice into a sound horse ready for the track. These are• Temperament and behavior. • Skeletal health and bone density. • Muscle growth and repair.
After the Sales - Pre-training Winners
Whilst we do need some energy to fuel ongoing growth and to cover the workload, a high starch grain- based diet will also fuel a hotter temperament. That fizz works against the desired calm, relaxed composure we need to educate this young horse. Provision of adequate fiber intake, perhaps by means of pasture turnout for a couple of hours each day, plenty of hay or other high fiber feeds like beet pulp or soy hulls, will help reduce the need for starch and dilute the negative effects it has on temperament, as well as boosting healthy gut function. Oil as a cool energy source also has a place but takes a few weeks to reach full effect. A high Omega 3 oil makes sense as the anti- inflammatory effect could be of benefit. The main point to remember is that starch is the enemy of peace and quiet in the training ring, and a little goes a long way. The use of low starch manufactured feeds is appropriate and certainly worth considering. They can maintain the desired condition without the fuss and fizz. When grain is to be fed, little and often is preferable. Small meals limit the peaks and troughs of glucose in the blood and the subsequent insulin response. Small amounts of starch are less likely to enter the hind gut and disrupt the normal microflora. The gut is now regarded as the ‘’second brain’’ and disturbances to gut function can manifest as changes in behavior disrupting the calm composure we need for successful training. Spells on the walker and long rein are soon followed by riding and place the first real stresses on the developing skeleton. Stress in the form of the mechanical loading of bone stimulates remodeling on the microscopic level, resulting in an increase in bone density and structural strength. Sometimes the stress on a bone may overwhelm its ability to respond and microfractures can result as in the case of shin soreness. Whilst nutrition cannot eliminate stress related bone injury, provision of adequate mineral nutrition can at least ensure that bone remodeling and improved density are not hampered by lack of the right mineral substrates. Key nutrients here are of course Calcium & Phosphorous.
For the pre-training thoroughbred aged 18-20 months with a bodyweight in the range 385 to 415kg the requirement for calcium is around 40g per day with phosphorous at half that. The ratio of Ca: P is important and should be close to 2: 1. As a rough guide Lucerne will boost calcium, but cereal hay will not. Grains are rich in phosphorous and will depress the Ca: P balance requiring calcium supplementation to restore the correct ratio. In conjunction with those macro minerals bone growth and remodeling require minute amounts of trace elements, especially Copper, Zinc and Manganese. These elements, especially Zinc, are also important for ligament and tendon strength being involved in the cross linkage of Collagen molecules. Bone develops on a collagen matrix whilst ligaments and tendons are made from it. Other trace elements support blood cell and vital hormone production as well as immunity and membrane integrity. Small amounts certainly, but critically important, nonetheless. So, as the skeleton undergoes growth and loading stresses, we want to make sure everything is in place nutritionally to support its development, along with an increase in bone density. Provision of a comprehensive mineral and trace supplement during pre-training will ensure nothing is missing when it is most needed. Calcium in particular is often low in racehorse diets which tend to be phosphorous rich due to grain content. In the young horse such imbalances can impact badly on skeletal development with potentially career long consequences. The developing skeleton supports the developing muscular system which also responds to mechanical loading at this time. Whilst serious muscle development work comes later there is still significant muscle growth happening. Some of the fat cover developed pre-sale is being burned up for energy and muscle definition begins to appear. Aside from energy, muscle growth primarily depends on amino acids supplied by protein in the diet. As yet we do not know the horse’s requirement for individual amino acids with one exception, Lysine. Lysine is recognized as the first limiting amino for growth and tissue repair. This means that regardless of how much protein is available, if Lysine is insufficient, growth and repair cannot proceed. This is why Lysine content is used as a measure of protein quality – the more the better.
Easter Yearling Lot 447 (Snitzel x First Seal) $1.8M
Easter Yearling Lot 134 (So You Think x Pinocchio) $1.1M
Our yearling in pre- training needs at least 35- 40g of Lysine per day so inclusion of some Lysine rich ingredients like soy, lupin, beans, or sunflower in the ration is sensible. Lucerne is another good source with about twice the Lysine content of cereal hays. In general, diets for these horses have plenty of total protein so provided Lysine is catered for, there should be no constraint on good muscle development. Nutrition alone cannot produce a winner, but poor nutrition can jeopardize a racing career before it even begins. Paying attention to nutrient requirements and intake levels during this critical pre-training phase may help smooth the passage to adulthood and promote good welfare as well as good athletic outcomes. By supporting both mental and physical soundness through good nutrition management we can help minimize injury and pave the way towards a long and successful racing career.

Fee: $38,500
He was a standout in a stellar crop of 3yo colts and possessed a turn of foot and electric finish that made his final 600m sectionals hard to believe. As a winner of the time honoured G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) during the Flemington Spring Carnival, he joins an honour roll that features Zoustar, Merchant Navy, Sunlight, Brazen Beau, Sepoy, Star Witness, Alinghi and Northern Meteor! That blistering turn of foot was palpable when Exceedance returned the next season in what has been described as the best crop of three-year-olds in generations. During the Spring he won the G3 San Domenico Stakes over 1100m first up, leaving boom colt Bivouac and Anaheed behind him. “I told Tommy to ride like he was on the best horse and let him do the rest,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. “That was only his third start. He’s a very exciting colt and made it look easy.” After placings in the G2 Run To The Rose and G1 Golden Rose over 1400m, where he again flashed home late in amazing sectionals, he travelled to Flemington for the straight-six championship – the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. Despite being checked at the start, Exceedance powered home along the rail in a truly exciting finish to defeat Bivouac and Libertini ahead of an all-star field.

McLAREN (AUS) 2016 Standing at Riverdene Stud, Wagga Wagga
Fee: $6,600
Brilliant Group winning 2-year-old made a huge impression at his first race start when landing the Group 3 ATC Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens in February 2019. He was sent to post a $1.55 favourite and didn’t give his supporters any reason for concern. McLaren proceeded to place third in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) a month later, but pulled up with a problem. This effectively ended his chances of further success on the track. McLaren commences stud duties at a time when his sire Exceed And Excel is arguably the most fashionable stallion in Australia, with Group 1 winning sons Microphone and Exceedance considered to be amongst the most exciting newcomers to the 2020 stallion ranks. A maternal grandson of Encosta de Lago, McLaren was produced by a half-sister to Group 1 sprinters First Command and Oneworld, and hails from the family of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove. To stand at $6,600 (inc. GST), McLaren provides exceptional value. A $380,000 Magic Millions Yearling, he has the looks and temperament to match his race performance and pedigree. A four-time winner in a 2YO capped by his G1 Sires’ Produce win, Microphone raced on six occasions at two and was never out of the money. He also claimed the Listed Talindert Stakes at Flemington before landing the G2 Skyline Stakes at Randwick. The son of Exceed And Excel’s strength and resilience shone through in heavy conditions when he was the first colt home when second in the G1 Golden Slipper. An exceptional victory in arguably the best G1 Sires’ in decades followed, where he accounted for G1 winners Loving Gaby, Kiamichi, Castelvecchio and Probabeel. He returned at 3 to win the G2 Autumn Stakes before a narrow runner-up finish in the G1 Randwick Guineas. “Microphone was a genuine Champion colt from a stellar crop that has since proven itself against older horses,” Pulford said. “He’s by the world’s best sire of two-year-olds, there are Stakes winners right through his maternal family and he’s a very good-looking horse in the mould of his father.” Enquire about breeding: (02) 6543 9000 www.darley.com.au

TOO DARN HOT (GB) 2016 Standing at Darley Kelvinside, Aberdeen
Fee: $44,000
Too Darn Hot earned the European Champion 2YO crown in 2018, following scintillating victories in each of his four starts. He added the European 3YO title in 2019 following two G1 victories at three. A son of the all-conquering Dubawi out of a three-time G1 winner Dar Re Mi, Too Darn Hot possessed the juvenile brilliance so desired in Australia with four outstanding victories in a nine-week period. He opened his account with a seven-length maiden victory at Sandown (UK), before scoring by four lengths in the G3 Solario Stakes at his next start and took the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster at his third. Too Darn Hot confirmed his position as Champion 2YO with success in the G1 Darley Dewhurst at Newmarket, defeating future Royal Ascot G1 winner Advertise and Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck. A stunning victory in the G1 Prix Jean Prat over 1,400m at Deauville before conquering the best older horses in G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood saw Too Darn Hot crowned Champion 3YO of his year. He retired as the winner of six of his nine starts with a Timeform rating of 132. Too Darn Hot was raced by English composer Lord Lloyd Webber and his wife Lady Lloyd Webber, who together founded Watership Down Stud. In November 2018 an agreement was reached between Watership Down Stud and Godolphin for Champion 2YO Too Darn Hot to stand at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket at the end of his racing career. Lord Lloyd Webber said, “We have been so thrilled with the way European breeders and industry professionals have supported Too Darn Hot that it makes this Australian adventure all the more exciting.”

One of the Hunter Valley’s most intriguing announcements hasn’t been seen on the track for over a year but certainly left an impression. Unite And Conquer brings a pedigree packed with Golden Slipper speed to stand at Matthew Sandblom’s burgeoning Kingstar Farm at Denman. A dual stakes-winner by Hinchinbrook, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Unite And Conquer won his debut in early October in the VRC Maribyrnong Trial Stakes L at Flemington defeating highly rated Sun City. With the Gold Coast riches in mind, Unite And Conquer headed to the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic L and proved too fast for subsequent Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Exhilarates. “He’s a big imposing colt with muscle on muscle, a real speed horse,” said Adrian Bott after that dominant win. “He’s a special colt. He’s showing us all the attributes of special colts we’ve had in the past like Pierro, Vancouver and Sebring.” Sadly, Unite and Conquer injured a tendon in the 2019 MM 2YO Classic and was ultimately retired without another start claiming two wins from just three starts in a brief but scintillating career. Unite and Conquer has a pedigree packed with champion speed influences Danehill and Snippets, tracing directly along his tail female line to blue hen Dark Jewel, the dam of Golden Slipper winning sire Baguette. Other Golden Slipper winning sires in his pedigree are Flying Spur, Danzero, Marauding and Vain, who appears twice. Breeding Rights available. His 3YO career was highlighted by two agonizingly close defeats in major G1 races finishing second beaten a short neck by The Autumn Sun in the G1 ATC Golden Rose (1400m) and second to champion filly Sunlight beaten half a neck in the G1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). A $400,000 Magic Million yearling, Zousain has superb conformation and Group I ability coupled with a diverse European female family, his dam being imported Irish bred G3 winner Pasar Silbano (IRE). The long term success of any stud rests to a large extent with finding the right successor to their champion sires and in Zousain we believe we have the right horse for the job. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2020
THOROUGHBREDS ARE GO Article and photos courtesy Caroline Searcy (TBNSW Committee member)
Drought has played a big part in many thoroughbreds winding up in poor condition over the past couple of years around Australia and Racing Victoria Accredited Retrainer Caroline Price elaborated further about the specific feed requirements for these horses that have been bred for generations to be elite athletes.
Caroline Searcy - Producer and presenter
With the importance of finding the right homes for the thoroughbreds we breed and race finally gaining real traction in the industry it’s become apparent that for a long time there’s been a lack of mainstream information on how to go about it. “Thoroughbreds Are Go” is a new national thoroughbred re-homing TV program that airs on Foxtel’s Sky Thoroughbred Central with plans to broaden its broadcast onto free to air channels in the near future. The reaction to Facebook and Twitter posts about the show has proven there is a huge appetite for more information on this vital aspect of the racing world. The program aims to help racing owners find new homes for their thoroughbreds, whether they have raced or not, but importantly it highlights some of the problems you can encounter along the way and what to look out for to ensure a smooth transition to an off the track life. Stories focus on the incredible athletic ability of these elite equine athletes, promoting their adaptability and great intelligence to the equestrian world. The feedback from the equestrian side of the ledger has however Thoroughbreds Are Go
been that the racing and breeding industry cannot expect individuals to just take on our thoroughbreds without realising the costs involved and where possible assisting with their re-training. Things can fall apart very quickly when thoroughbreds find themselves in the wrong home and this is why re-training is vitally important. One of Australia’s best thoroughbred re-trainers Scott Brodie, formerly head of the Racing NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust (now Team Thoroughbred) took part in two beautiful stories, explaining in the first that it does cost several thousands of dollars to begin the retraining of most horses, but without it generally thoroughbreds won’t be able to successfully transfer to a new life. Scott also emphasises that follow up instruction is hugely important for most riders taking on a thoroughbred. The second story at Scott’s Thoroughbred Aftercare and Re-training Centre focussed on returned soldier Isaac Adams, whose work with Scott and his thoroughbreds was so important for him as he overcame lingering posttraumatic stress from his military service, something this breed excels at around the world.
The thoroughbred, particularly those who have been in race training have an extremely high metabolism and therefore need much more food than the average pony, stock horse or other breed. Through my own re-homing ventures with thoroughbreds I have bred I witnessed firsthand how a thoroughbred can fall away very quickly when they are not getting enough food, when people who have leased them don’t understand this and also often put them in paddocks with other breeds. That story also contained information on how to lease your thoroughbred to its new home so you are always in control of its destiny and to register it so it can never be put through an abattoir. For bigger breeders these things are not possible for every horse they sell, but the program does create awareness amongst smaller owners about what their obligations should be when they are retiring their horse from the track.
The program can only exist thanks to the great support of sponsors such as major sponsor Tabcorp who is an extremely passionate supporter of the retraining of our thoroughbreds. Arrowfield Stud sponsors a segment “Strapper’s Stories” which shows the great love those closest to our thoroughbreds have for them within racing stables debunking the myth that no-one cares about these magnificent animals and that racing is only about wagering. Some of these strappers have taken on these horses as their own, one even breeding three foals from the mare she used to look after, while others relate the story of their favourite horse in work and how happy they are to see it in a new loving home with someone else. Thoroughbred Breeders’ Australia supports the segment “Farm Friends” showing some great stories about retired racehorses doing different work in their retirement years. We’ve shown horses in their 20’s working as nannies looking after weanlings at studs around Australia including Desert War, Rizon and retired broodmare Miss Kournikova. And there was a beautiful story on Yarraman Park’s home-bred Restless, a stakes winner for Gai Waterhouse before a successful eventing career with journalist Bronwyn Farr’s daughter Victoria, and then with Harry and Georgie Mitchell’s daughter Willa. Thoroughbreds Are Go also looks at some of the great competitions around Australia that offer thoroughbred only classes thereby encouraging further uptake of the breed, with ample rewards for those who choose to do so. Krissy Harris’s Thoroughbred Sport Horse Association is one such organisation featured in series one in two stories that included
learnt about rehoming my three home-bred thoroughbreds War Of The Roses, Stryker Rose and King William. For a range of reasons including serious injury, bushfire and drought they are all back in my care, highlighting the care many owners already do take with the horses they breed.
ex-jockey Katelyn Mallyon, now trying her hand as a showjumper on former Lloyd Williams owned import Little White Cloud. And equestrian rider turned Randwick clocker for her husband Adrian and Gai Waterhouse, Jess Bott and Raise An Angel. Also Australia’s top showjumper Nelson Smyth and the only current thoroughbred World Cup competitor Kilwinning Luck and a great insight into the conformation of the thoroughbred and why it is so well suited to show-jumping, from former Olympian and now Olympic equestrian coach Rod Brown. The joy thoroughbreds bring to people in times of distress was also highlighted in a delightful story on the Milton show in southern NSW a region devastated by bushfires but where off-track thoroughbreds gave the local community something to focus on with so many other agricultural shows in the area cancelled following a horror summer. Breednet’s Tara Madgwick, a former track rider for Gai Waterhouse, explained why thoroughbreds have been the perfect transition horse for her children Jack and Jasmine as they move between ponies and larger show-jumping breeds. The final episode of series one looked at some of the lessons I’ve
Also featured was Edinburgh Park Stud’s Ian Smith who offers $1000 to anyone who has a horse with his brand so he can take them back to his farm to live out the rest of their days. In series two, Thoroughbreds Are Go will concentrate on a range of other past times thoroughbreds excel at such as polo, camp-drafting and within Riding For Disabled, with segments involving sponsors Godolphin and Chris Waller Racing. Anyone keen to sponsor the show and have a segment done on their work re-homing thoroughbreds is welcome to contact me at searcc@ gmail.com .. the more sponsors there are, the more episodes I can produce which is great for telling more stories of our wonderful thoroughbred breed.
All the stories from Thoroughbreds Are Go are available on Caroline Searcy’s Youtube channel.

The horseracing industry relies on the principle of fair play in competition. This is important for both for the welfare of its horses and consumer confidence in wagering, a major source of income to the industry. Antidoping control is one way the industry can protect itself from breeches to integrity. Gene doping is the non therapeutic transfer of genes or genetically modified cells (gene therapy) to artificially enhance athletic performance in humans and animals. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and horseracing authorities have been aware of the threat of gene doping for the racing industry for around 15 years. Technology has continued to evolve and gene editing, a more refined way of performing gene therapy that is most successful when performed on an embryo, is now attracting the attention of the thoroughbred industry. The technology presents a new challenge for the industry particularly given all forms of artificial reproductive technologies are banned in the breeding of thoroughbred horses. Currently, the only way to identify whether a horse has been gene edited is to compare its DNA sequence to that of its parents via whole genome sequencing (technology that maps the horse’s entire blueprint of DNA). Differences in a foal’s sequence compared to its parents could indicate an artificially created mutation – the result of gene therapy. While effective this approach is expensive, requires specialist knowledge interpret the analysis, and creates a large amount of data that must be securely stored. This project will develop a cheaper and easier to use method, compared to the currently available method, to detect gene editing in horses. It will give Australian and International Stud Books a relatively cheap and easy method to identify illegally edited horses. This will help the industry uphold integrity and protect the welfare of its most important participants.
