PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the latest edition of the Breeders Update. Dear Members, What a great relief for Eastern Australia to be out of drought and enjoying a wonderful Spring. We are so grateful to be involved in an industry that has been able to keep functioning through the challenges of Covid-19, ensuring employment and the flow on effect to so many businesses that are reliant on the racing and breeding industry for their wellbeing. It is with great sadness to inform everyone that unfortunately Winx has lost her foal. With so many people involved in the Winx story from owners, staff past and present to her many fans around the world. Our thoughts and attention at the moment are on Winx ensuring that she remains healthy, as anyone in this situation would respect. It is a traumatic time for a mother and those involved, Winx is now the centre of her carer’s attention following the loss of a beautiful filly. Australia’s most anticipated foal this season will be mourned by many and our greatest sympathy goes out the Kepitis, Tighe and Treweeke families during this sad time. This year has been a very different sales season, nevertheless Australian thoroughbreds remain in great demand both nationally and internationally. The Magic Millions Broodmare Sale witnessed some amazing results with 6 high calibre mares grossing over $13 million including Sunlight $4.2 mil (Zoustar x Solar Charged), Unforgotten $2.75 mil (Fastnet Rock x Memories Of You), Viddora $2.55 mil (I Am Invincible x Snow Flight), Champagne Cuddles $2 mil (Not A Single Doubt x Sky Cuddle), Invincibella $1.3 mil (I Am Invincible x Abscond), Right Chord $1.05 mil (Lonhro x Miss Right Note) .

Each season the first foals of the freshman sires are eagerly awaited and in this edition we have collated a gallery of some impressive young progeny. We also welcome a few late comers to the 2020 Stallion roster in D’Argento and Bellevue Hill, bringing this seasons count to 16 freshman sires kicking off their stud careers in NSW. We are pleased to share with you a few more regular items in our magazine, with updates from the new series on Sky Thoroughbred Central, “Thoroughbreds Are Go” as well as AgriFutures project highlight articles. We encourage submissions to the “Les Young Writers Award“, which is open to anyone who shares a great love of the thoroughbred. The thoroughbred world is mourning the recent loss of a true gentleman of the turf in Bob Ingham. Bobs racing and breeding partnership with his brother Jack was phenomenally successful and the family continue to make an enormous contribution to our industry. The NSW Bred Stakes Winners list keeps getting bigger in each seasonal magazine that we produce, proving once again the great quality bred from Australia’s largest producer of world class thoroughbreds.

TIMEFORM REVIEW

Of the 2020 Summer - Winter Carnival Photos courtesy of Sportpix, article CJP

Melody Belle. Bella Vella had originally been retired but unfortunately failed to go in foal to Criterion as was placed in a sale on Inglis’ Online platform. With Australia leading the way in online sales technology, Bella Vella proved yet again what bargains can be found at the click of a button.

Gytrash (Lope De Vega x Miss Barley)

Four-year-olds + The Autumn Carnivals may have finished without crowds and with great uncertainty but also with some hope that racing could continue through the Covid Pandemic. Where the casual racegoer merely sees a sport or a Saturday pastime, the size and scope of the Racing and Breeding industry have never been more evident than through this Covid period. Remarkably, the industry maintained stability more than other many other sports and horse racing continued across the country. With Sydney and Melbourne carnivals winding down, focus shifted to Queensland and South Australia where breeders and owners continued to compete for blacktype races. All Too Hard gelding Behemoth signalled he may prove a force to be reckoned with when gifted his second stakes win in the D C McKay S. Gr.3 (1100m) early in May. Behemoth franked the form going into a strong renewal of the Goodwood Hcp Gr.1 (1200m) a fortnight later finishing on the heels of the placegetters, Trekking (Street Cry), Gytrash (Lope De Vega) and 3yo filly Lyre (Lonhro) in what was one of the highest rated races through the winter period.

Commands last crop produced another Stakes winner for the Godolphin team when Bandipur claimed one of the last Stakes races of the season, the Eye Liner Stakes L (1200m) at Ipswich Commands was also the broodmare sire of Ranier (Lonhro) winner of the Luskin Star S. L (1300m), another of Godolphin’s numerous home bred Stakes victories which included Gaulois (Street Cry) in the Lord Mayors Cup, Gr.3 (1600m), Inquiry (Exceed And Excel) which was sold out of the Godolphin Stable and won the Spear Chief Hcp for trainer John Smerdon and Viridine (Poet’s Voice) in the Bletchingly Stakes Gr.3 (1200m). In times of turmoil, the familiar becomes reassuring and so it was during Covid that we witnessed Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel claim yet another General Sires Classification. With four Stakes winners in the 4yo+ Classification, Snitzel proved as prolific as any stallion in the country. Snitz won the Takeover Target S. (1200m) at Randwick in early May before a homebred “home” win in the by Irithea in the Dark Jewel Classic on what would have been the Scone stand-alone meeting. Bred by Arrowfield, Planette Thoroughbreds and Belford Production, six-year-old Irithea won well for her Darby Racing ownership group over Into The Abyss (Foxwedge) and Ready To Prophet (Smart Missile). Whilst Irithea didn’t fire at her only subsequent start in the Dane Ripper in Brisbane, Snitzel managed more Stakes

Both Trekking and Gytrash returned their peak Timeform ratings of 123 out of the Goodwood Hcp placing them just behind the top peak figures sprint figures of Nature Strip 129 (TJ Smith S. Gr.1), Aquis’ new stallion Pierata 126 (The Shorts Gr.2) and Redzel 126 (The Concorde S Gr.3) and on par with Santa Ana Lanes peak performance (123) when second in The Everest. near miss was the second in as many starts for the Godolphin runner having gone closest to running down Bella Vella (Commands) in the Robert Sangster S. Gr.1 (1200m) a fortnight before. Bred by Graham Watson, Bella Vella is from the last crop of Darley stallion Commands who died aged 17 back in 2015 but whose influence is still being felt through ten-time Gr.1 winner

FARNAN #raisedonhorsepower

WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU success for NSW Breeders with Steve Gillard cheering home Scallopini in the Hinkler Hcp L (1100m) which provided his mare Rose of Mulan (More Than Ready) with a Stakes winning first foal.

Guineas with ease and booking a campaign to Brisbane that would ultimately yield another Stakes win in the Fred Best Classic Gr.3 (1350m) before a midfield finish in the Stradbroke Hcp against older horses.

Ingham Racing also toasted Snitzel when their homebred Sure Knee won the Sapphire Stakes Gr.3 (1630m) to become Snitzel 103rd Stakes winner beating Krone (Eurozone). Krone would add more Stakes success to her resume and please NSW Breeders Bell View Hill at her next start winning the Glasshouse Handicap L (1400m).

John Thompson trained Fituese claimed the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) becoming the fifth Stakes winner for her young sire Deep Field who has proven consistently popular at his Newgate Stud base. Deep Field’s latest Stakes victory came just a fortnight after another of his first crop three year old fillies Xilong won the Group Two Euclase Stakes in Adelaide for breeder’s SF Bloodstock and Kingstar Farm’s Matthew Sandblom. Deep Field stands at Newgate this season at a career high $55,000 inc GST.

Whilst Snitzel may have claimed another General Sire title, no stallion produced more winners for the year than Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible. I Am Invincible’s twelfth Stakes winner for the season was Victorem in the Group Two Victory Stakes (1200m) defeating Niccanova (Nicconi) and Deep Image (Testa Rossa). Bred by Michelle Kelly, unfortunately Victorem couldn’t repeat the victory a fortnight later in the season’s last Group One race, The Stradbroke Hcp (1200m) where consistent Niccanova finished third behind Madam Rouge (Zoustar) whilst Arrowfield celebrated again with six-year-old Tyzone becoming another Gr.1 winner for Written Tycoon.

Three-year-olds Stud duties proved too tempting for three year old entires Yes, Yes, Yes ($38,500 at Coolmore Stud), Exceedance ($38,500 at Vinery Stud) and Castelvecchio ($33,000 at Arrowfield Stud) after the Autumn leaving top rated Godolphin prospect Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) as one of the sole star three years olds to press on and tackle Spring riches.

Arrowfield Stud’s new acquisition Written Tycoon heralded his moved into the Hunter Valley with another Stakes victory courtesy of the John Hawkes trained Dirty Work in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m). Placed at Stakes level behind star three year old Bivouac in the early Spring last season, Dirty Work proven too strong for older horses Star Boy (5yo by Pluck) and Bon Ami (6yo by Bon Hoffa) and may continue to measure up amongst older sprinters in the Spring to fill the void left behind by recent three year old retirees. Dirty Work was one of two three year old Stakes winners for Written Tycoon on the day with Hightail scoring his second Stakes win with a narrow victory in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) in the familiar colours of the China Horse Club. One of the most consistent runners of the Brisbane Carnival was Toby and Trent Edmunds trained Vanna Girl by former Vinery stallion Husson. Bred and raised in the Hunter, Vanna Girl was a $40,000 purchase by Edmonds Racing out of the Vinery Stud draft at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and took her record to 7 wins and 2 seconds from 10 starts with earnings of $371,300. Vanna Girl has notched four consecutive wins, three at Stakes level culminating in a Group 2 Magic Millions The Roses (1800m) win over fellow Husson 3yo Cellarmaid with Hinchinbrook filly Celestial Falls third.

Bivouac (Exceed And Excel x Dazzler)

Whilst the Scone Cup was held in Scone on Friday, the traditional stand-alone meeting moved to Sydney. The Inglis Guineas Day at Rosehill in May marked one of the last opportunities for the three years olds to claim Stakes success in New South Wales and it uncovered some potentially top class gallopers in Dawn Passage, Dirty Work and Fituese. Coming off an impressive win in the Hawkesbury Guineas Gr.3 (1400m) where he rated an impressive 116, Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach) was simply too good for his five rivals claiming the Inglis

Vanna Girl (Husson x Logan’s Choice)

Exceed And Excel rarely goes through a carnival without a Stakes winner and whilst Aquitane was bested by Fituese in the Denise’s Joy S. in Sydney, the Godolphin Timeform Review continued

WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU homebred headed north and made a mends on Stradbroke Day in the Listed Mick Dittman S. (1000m) for trainer James Cummings. One of six Stakes wins for her sire over the winter period, Aquitane is the quintessential Exceed and Excel archetype having only missed one placing in nine starts when 4th beaten less than length at her second start. Not to be outdone, the other three year feature on Stradbroke Day the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2200m) was claimed by Ballistic Boy a son of the ultra-consistent Twin Hills resident and Champion Australian First Season Sire (2015/16), Smart Missile. Ballistic Boy is the 17th stakes winner for Smart Missile and races in the famous Dato Tan Chin Nam colours. Bred by Sydney based bloodstock agent, Andy Williams and sold through Middlebrook lodge to Duncan Ramage, Ballistic Boy had put the writing on the wall running third behind Vanna Girl in the Daybreak S before the narrowest of defeats in the Gunsynd S. Lonhro filly Lyre picked up more Group One Blacktype when third behind older sprinters Trekking and Gytrash in the Goodwood Hcp Gr.1 (1200m). A winner of the Blue Diamond S. Gr.1 as a 2yo and placed in the Golden Slipper Gr.1, Lyre has rarely put in a bad performance at the top level finishing fourth in the MRC Thousand Guineas S Gr.1 (1600m) last Spring, fourth in the Surround S Gr.1 (1400m) behind Probabeel and Funstar in the Autumn and placing second beaten a neck behind Bella Vella (Commands) in the Sangster S. Gr.1 (1200m) rating 110 and then rating 111 in the Goodwood behind the older males.

Two-year-olds With the Autumn Carnival over in Sydney and Melbourne the top echelon of the 2yo Ratings does not generally change too much unless we see a standout performer appear over the Brisbane Carnival where the remaining Group Two and Group One 2yo races are held. This year saw Rothfire leap to equal second alongside Arrowfield bred Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) on 117 Timeform ratings after claiming the BRC Champagne Classic Gr.2 (1200m) from Isotope (Deep Field) and Wild Ruler (Snitzel) and then the J.J Atkins Gr.1 (1400m) over Gotta Kiss (Not A Single Doubt) and The Drinks Cart (Unencumbered). If there is an exception to every rule then Rothfire was it being by a non NSW based sire as almost every other 2yo Stakes contest across the country was claimed by stallions standing in this state. Popular Vinery Stud

Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa x Vasilissa)

stallion Headwater (Exceed and Excel) notched his first Stakes winner when his son Wisdom of Water dominated the Ken Russel Classic Gr.3 (1200m) for Toby and Trent Edmonds. Not to be outdone by his sire son, Exceed And Excel produced a Queensland Stakes winner of his own with September Run in the Listed Bill Carter S. (1100m) at Doomben whilst Twins Hills Smart Missile and Widden’s Sebring rounded out the carnival with victories by Smart n Sexy in the Listed Dalrello S. (1200m) and The Actuary in the Phoenix Stakes L. (1600m) respectively. The final NSW 2yo Stakes race, the Listed Yarraman Park Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill was claimed by unbeaten filly Macroura for Arrowfield’s Champion sire Snitzel, becoming his 102nd Stakes winner. The last 2yo Stakes race of the season in Melbourne, The Taj Rossi Final (registered as Gibson Carmichael S, 1600m) was won by gelding Cherry Tortoni carrying 61kg, the highest weighted winner in over 20 years. Like Macroura in Sydney, Cherry Tortoni stretched his unbeaten record to three with the impressive victory and provided NSW breeders Sandy Tait with the latest Stakes winner from a treasured family. By one season shuttler Night of Thunder, the gelding is out of lightly raced Strategic mare Tortoni who is the last foal from Sandy Tait’s’ grand mare Whisked (Whiskey Road), making her a half-sister to Australian Champion Stayer and 13 time Gr.1 winner Tie The Knot (Nassipour) Tie The Knot was Australia’s top rated 4yo+ colt for three seasons 89/90, 99/00 & 2000-01. A Derby preparation may await Cherry Tortoni in the Spring. The South Australian carnival hosted five juvenile Stakes which were dominated by Hunter Valley based stallions. Like Macroura and Cherry Tortoni, Exceed and Excel filly Forever Free remained unbeaten in three starts when claiming the Queen Adelaide Stakes L (1050m) to become her sires 168th Stakes winner. Fellow Godolphin stallion Shooting To Win notched his second Stakes winner when Extra Time broke his maiden by three and a half lengths in the National Stakes Gr.3 (1200m) over Kazuhiko (Deep Impact) and Hard Rock Girl (All Too Hard) whilst the Sires Produces Stakes Gr.3 (1400m) went to Ringbolt, a gelding from the final Hunter Valley crop of five time Group 1 winner Dream Ahead who now stands permanently at Haras de Grandcamp, France. Ringbolt may well find himself heading overseas to further his career in Hong Kong. Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt) took out the Listed Oaklands Plate (1400m) and Parlophone (I Am Invincible) beat older horses in the Listed Lightning S. (1050m) to round out the last two year old Stakes of the Season. Timeform Review continued

BELLEVUE HILL (AUS) 2016 Standing at Aquis Farm, Hunter Valley

Fee: $11,000

Electrifying Aquis homebred-colt Bellevue Hill, the only Group-winning juvenile son of his Champion First and Season Sire Pierro, is standing his debut this season at Aquis Hunter Valley. Bellevue Hill was an exciting juvenile, winning by over five lengths on debut in the Black Opal Preview at Canberra in a time of 57.15 before finishing a half-length second to Yes Yes Yes in the record-breaking Gr.2 Todman Stakes after doing all the work up front and only be run down late, leaving Bivouac, Strasbourg and Time To Reign in his wake. Recording a quicker time than his own sire Pierro achieved in his Todman Stakes win, Bellevue Hill went on to record a facile two length victory in the Gr.3 Schweppervescence Stakes over Strasbourg the following week. In the process, Bellevue Hill achieved a juvenile Timeform Rating of 116, Lonhro a mark better or equal than the likes of what Bivouac, Cosmic Force, Yes Yes Yes, Trapeze PIERRO (AUS) Artist, The Autumn Sun and Astern also achieved at 2. A son of Pierro, whose 23 stakes winners include six Gr.1 winners highlighted by fellow Aquis sires season sire Pierata, Shadow Hero and Regal Power, Bellevue Hill is out of the speedy, 1000m winner Bellevue Girl, a fullsister to Exceed And Excel’s Gr.3 winner Sugar Babe from the family of dual Gr.2 winner On Type.

D’ARGENTO (AUS) 2014 Standing at Bowness Stud, Young

Fee: $16,500

Group 1 winning 3-year-old D’Argento (by So You Think) was secured to commence his stallion career this season. One of the outstanding members of an exceptional Classic generation, D’Argento established himself as an elite level performer with a series of highly-rated performances which of course featured a memorable Group 1 Rosehill Guineas success. When the curtain was brought down on his distinguished racing career, D’Argento’s race record read four wins and four placings from 14 starts for $1,103,525 in earnings. He retires to stud the highest rated son of So You Think (NZ) by virtue of Timeform’s assessment of his performances when running third to Kementari and Pierata in the Hobartville Stakes over 1400m, and second to Hartnell in the Epsom Handicap over 1600m. Produced by a black-type winning juvenile daughter of Redoute’s Choice, D’Argento makes great appeal as a son of one of Australia’s brightest young stallions in the form of So You Think, from the hugely progressive sireline of High Chaparral and the peerless Sadler’s Wells. When one also throws into the mix the prodigious influence of his maternal great grandsire Kenmare (responsible for his unmistakable coat colouring), he provides broodmare owners with a comprehensive blend of bloodlines that have gone from strength to strength in more recent time.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2020

THOROUGHBREDS ARE GO Article and photos courtesy Caroline Searcy (TBNSW Committee member)

Thoroughbreds Are Go, produced and hosted by TBNSW Committee member Caroline Searcy returns for the spring in mid-September educating racing owners and breeders about the best ways to re-home their thoroughbreds. There’s plenty of information too for anyone from the equestrian world taking on this wonderful breed for the huge range of activities they excel at away from the racetrack. While there is now a huge public focus on rehoming our thoroughbreds many Australian studs and breeders have been taking care of the horses they have bred for generations. The program will feature well-loved retired geldings such as Foreteller, Proliferate, Cuban Sunday and Esposito at Vinery Stud as Peter Orton explains what’s required to look after thoroughbreds as they age. Segenhoe Stud features in a delightful story showing Arborea now aged 30, Wedgetail Eagle at 23 and True Blonde at 25 years of age, and now a companion for Winx’s dam Vegas Showgirl. Peter O’Brien delves into the requirements of retired broodmares and how to keep them happy and healthy after their breeding and nannying work is done. Ben and Kate Blay provide an insightful look into the work it requires to rehabilitate a thoroughbred who retires from racing with tendon injuries and the best way to work these horses back to a level where they can comfortably compete as show-jumpers. And we meet one of Australian eventing’s most talented young riders Charlie Richardson, the son of wellknown competitor and thoroughbred pre-trainer Blair

Thoroughbreds Are Go

Richardson of Vantage Hill and his wife Nikki, who competed for Australia in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The series starts with an unforgettable story from the Richmond Riding For Disabled base showing the incredible sensitivity and calm the thoroughbred can display when working with children with disabilities. And show sponsor Godolphin features in two fascinating stories, one looking at early foal handling at Godolphin’s Denman farm. Stud manager John Sunderland explains how important it is for the life of a thoroughbred for their early handling to be full of trust and confidence. And Australian Stud And Stable Staff Award winner Scott Eeles shows the starting “breaking-in” and pretraining techniques he employs to make sure all the Darley Stud horses are equipped for a productive and active life away from racing. Thoroughbreds Are Go airs at 7.30pm Monday nights on Sky Thoroughbred Central (Foxtel Ch 528) and is live streamed on racingnsw.com.au

Improving diagnosis and preventing pregnancy loss in Australian thoroughbreds New research is underway to explore mid to late term pregnancy losses in Australian thoroughbred mares in order to improve mare welfare and increase industry profitability.

The research, funded by AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Program, seeks to better understand the causes, regional distribution, and risk factors that may be contributing to equine pregnancy loss in Australia. Australia has the second largest thoroughbred breeding industry in the world with 660 stud farms across the country, predominantly in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. These stud farms supply thoroughbred horses to both the domestic and overseas markets. The thoroughbred breeding industry is worth more than $1.16 billion per annum to the Australian economy, and employs close to 8000 people, particularly in rural and regional areas. Current estimates indicate that more than five per cent of thoroughbred foals are lost pre-term in Australia and little is understood about what causes these pregnancy losses or what conditions might contribute to them. This lack of understanding makes it difficult to provide a definitive diagnosis or explanation for the loss, and owners and stud managers are unable to take measures to reduce repeat losses from affected mares or prevent further losses in other mares.

The multidisciplinary research team, led by Dr Joan Carrick, Registered Specialist in Equine Medicine, Dr Angela Begg retired veterinary pathologist specialist, and Charles Sturt University epidemiologist Dr Victoria Brookes, will use their findings to develop management strategies to reduce the risk of pregnancy loss and to guide further research. Dr Carrick said, “Pregnancy loss is an important issue for the thoroughbred industry. It has a devasting impact on the horses themselves and the people who work with them. In addition, some of the diseases that can cause equine pregnancy loss can be transmitted to humans, especially during foaling, and this research is an opportunity to look carefully at these and other emerging diseases. “In better understanding the risks associated with pregnancy we’ll be able to reduce losses through management and prevention. Plus, we’ll be able to describe new conditions more quickly and get on top of the losses.” Dr Brookes said that this project brings together pathologists, equine medical specialists and epidemiologists to provide a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of equine pregnancy loss.

“This research is exciting because it’s multidisciplinary. We’re combining pathology, the causes and effects of equine pregnancy loss, and the epidemiology, the incidence and possible patterns, to ensure we have a holistic understanding and approach to addressing this issue for the industry.” Dr Brookes said, “On the epidemiology side we are looking at the distribution of equine pregnancy loss across Australia – where they occur, when they occur and what types of mares it’s happening to.” “Our first step is to establish a baseline, to describe what happens in Australia now. That way we’ll know what to expect across the year, across the whole system.” “We want to add to the knowledge around the risk factors for equine pregnancy loss, extend our understanding to benefit the welfare of the mares.”

“These will be supported by training tools for veterinarians and pathologists to improve the diagnostic accuracy of pregnancy loss investigations.”

Dr Carrick added the findings will inform the development of management strategies to reduce the risk of pregnancy loss and to guide further research.

Australian breeders are urgently awaiting the outcomes of this research to further improve mare welfare and minimise their losses. John Sunderland, Stud Manager, Godolphin Woodlands is one such breeder. He said, “I’m very pleased to hear the wheels are now in motion for this important research.”

“Key to this will be establishing a system for the surveillance of equine pregnancy loss which could provide early warning of an outbreak so that industry losses can be limited.” Dr Carrick said, “The project will also develop diagnostic criteria tools for all known causes of pregnancy loss and a standardised procedure will be described to investigate all pregnancy losses in thoroughbred mares throughout Australia.”

“We spend 11 months looking after the mares and their foals in utero and to then lose them at birth is extremely disappointing. We just don’t know enough yet about how and why it happens. There’s information we’re missing that this research will help us find out.” Mr Sunderland said, “We’re still a little reactive when an outbreak of pregnancy loss happens, and this project gives us an opportunity to be more proactive. If we can make it easier and more cost effective to investigate pregnancy loss, that will have a huge benefit to the industry. “We can always get better at managing the welfare of our horses. Through this research we’ll understand more about why pregnancy loss is happening and there could be something quite simple that we can do that will make a big difference.” Read more about the project and register to receive updates from the AgriFutures thoroughbred horses program at agrifutures.com.au/thoroughbred-horses.

This edition we’ve selected this submission from member Caroline Press, congratulations on being published.

Lessons from the Masters By Caroline Press

James Bartholomew ‘Bart’ Cummings, is arguably Australia’s greatest ever racehorse trainer. He has trained the winners of 268 Group 1 races, 776 stakes races and 12 Melbourne Cups. He was named a National Treasure, a member of the Order of Australia, and an inductee into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the Racing Hall of Fame. He lived his life surrounded by horses. He was the son of a trainer, the father of a trainer, and the grandfather of trainers. But all any trainer can do is get the best out of his horses, and not every horse is capable of winning a stakes race, a Group 1 or a Melbourne Cup. So how was it that JB Cummings enjoyed such long career of extraordinary success at the track? Les Young Writers’ Award

By his own admission, Cummings often disregarded both conformation and type when identifying subsequent winners. He described his great champion, Galilee, as a yearling, as ‘awkward’, ‘pigeon toed’, with ‘lopsided front legs’ and an ‘ungainly walk’. He also said he was throwing ‘his offside foreleg out at an angle’ and was ‘distinctly pigeon toed.’ Yet Galilee rewrote record books… Perhaps the biggest reason Cummings set himself apart and above, was his attention to both training and pedigree, much akin to his great Italian counterpart, Frederico Tesio. But whilst Tesio applied his knowledge of pedigree to the breeding barn, Cummings applied his to the sales ring. And while Tesio targeted the winning post of the Derby, Cummings looked to the ‘first Tuesday in November’ as his measure of success.

WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU Frederico Tesio is widely regarded as the master of thoroughbred matings. He has been described as a ‘breeding wizard’ and the ‘most revered breeder in thoroughbred history’.

The mating of Melanion with non-winner, Jenny Hampton, included two nicks, that of Isonomy/Hermit and Galopin/Hampton and gave Tesio his ‘first great satisfaction as a breeder’ to win the 1911 Italian Derby.

No other breeder has changed the shape of modern breeding and racing as has Tesio. He bred and trained the winners of 22 Italian Derbies, 11 Oaks, 18 St Legers, 22 Gran Premio di Milanos, a dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, a Grand Prix de Paris winner, a Coronation Cup winner, an Ascot Gold Cup winner, a Goodwood Cup winner, a Italian 2,000 Guineas winner, English Derby & St Leger winners, and the list goes on…

Jenny Hampton traced to Ghuznee by Pantaloon, the unbeaten winner of the Epson Oaks and the Coronation Stakes.

Like Cummings, Tesio looked away from conventional breeding strategies. He purchased non-winning, unfashionable mares and mated them to mediocre stallions. In doing so, he bred 5 unbeaten champions and multiple Group 1 winners. Both Cummings and Tesio relied heavily on their knowledge of pedigree to breed or identify future champions. They both had unquenchable appetites for knowledge, they looked to nicks, crosses and female families, and they forgave poor conformation and the race record of the dam. In his book, ‘Breeding The Racehorse’ Tesio makes reference to three successful breeding nicks, that of Bend Or and Macaroni, Galopin and Hampton, and Isonomy and Hermit, that have each ‘been found to give their best results when crossed with each other.’ He describes using these nicks to breed Guido Reni, his first Derby winner. Tesio said he went to England in 1904 to purchase a granddaughter of Isonomy to mate with a descendent of Hermit, the ‘mediocre stallion’ standing in Italy named, Melanion.

Indeed, throughout his career, Tesio continued to adhere to nicks and crosses as his primary strategy to build outstanding racehorses including the remarkably similarly bred, unbeaten champions, Nearco and Ribot. Tesio crafted Nearco’s pedigree over two generations with the purchase of Catnip, a weedy, undersized mare from the Newmarket sales in 1915. She has won just one race from nine starts but was well bred, with both parents’ classic winners and her immediate ancestors all top racehorses. Catnip was by Spearmint out of Sibola by The Sailor Prince. In the same way that he had previously purchased Jenny Hampton for her line of Isonomy, Tesio bought Catnip for her strain of Spearmint, and for a fee of 75 guineas, she returned to Italy where she bred 8 foals. The most important of those foals was Nogara, the champion filly of her year in Italy, winning 13 races including the One Thousand Guineas, the Two Thousand Guineas, the Premio Bimbi and the Criterium Nazionale. Nogara was by Havresac out of Catnip by Spearmint, a son of Carbine. When bred to Pharos in 1934, Nogara foaled Nearco, a brown colt who was unbeaten on the race track and whose influence in the breeding barn, was boundless.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2020

Nearco in turn sired Nearctic, the sire of Northern Dancer; Nasrullah, the sire of Bold Ruler, and Nasrullah’s three-quarter brother, Royal Charger, the sire of Turn-To. In his stud career, as on the racetrack, there is no question that Nearco was the supreme influence in international racing and breeding in the latter part of the twentieth century. 13 years later, Tesio returned to the combination of Pharos, Havresac and Carbine to breed another unbeaten star of the turf, Ribot, arguably the best horse of the twentieth century. Ribot was by Tenerani out of Romanella, a granddaughter of Pharos. His sire was a grandson of the unbeaten Cavaliere D’Arpino, the horse Tesio had previously described as the best he had bred. Cavaliere D’Arpino was by Havresac, and traced to Chute, by Carbine. So, the pedigree of Cavaliere D’Arpino carried the identical Havresac over Carbine cross Tesio used to breed Nogara. With the mating of Romanella, a granddaughter of Pharos, to Tenerani, the grandson of Cavaliere D’Arpino, Tesio created the same combination of Pharos, Havresac and Carbine he had previously used to produce his champion, Nearco. Sadly, Tesio died two months before Ribot had his first outing in Milan in 1954. He won that race, and his next 15, over three seasons, in three countries, at distances from five furlongs to 15 furlongs, and on going which ranged from hard to heavy. Like Nearco, Ribot was also an outstanding success at stud, where his winners came in a variety of shapes and sizes and rarely showed any unwillingness in a finish. And his sons also did well as stallions, including Latin Lover, whose three wins included the Manchester Cup. Latin Lover stood in Australia where he sired Rain Lover, the first horse for 100 years to win the Melbourne Cup two years in succession in 1968 and 1969. It was 18 years earlier that JB Cummings had had his first taste of Melbourne Cup glory when he strapped Comic Court for his father Jim. Jim Cummings had trained the full brother, Comic Prince, for 20 wins and took out an option to acquire the subsequent Melbourne Cup winner. The brothers were by Powerscourt out of Witty Maid, a mare who traced to fourth dam, Smoky, by The Welkin. It is doubtful that Bart Cummings were unaware of the role The Welkin had played in the pedigrees of previous Melbourne Cup winners. The winner of 6 of 23 races including the Buckenham Stakes, July Handicap and Royal Stakes, The Welkin was Les Young Writers’ Award

imported into Australia, and became a prolific sire of winners including the outstanding champion, Gloaming. In 1927, Trivalve had won the AJC Derby, VRC Derby and Melbourne Cup. He was by Cyklon out of Trey, by The Welkin. And from the same family, Hall Mark, saluted in the 1933 Melbourne Cup, having also won the AJC Derby and VRC Derby. Hall Marks 2nd dam was a full sister to Trey, both daughters of The Welkin. And thirteen years later, Gatum Gatum won the 1963 Melbourne Cup, sharing the same 4th dam, Smoky, by The Welkin, as carried by Comic Court. However, with The Welkin disappearing further back into pedigrees, Cummings soon looked elsewhere to achieve his first Melbourne Cup win in his own right. In 1960, Cummings had purchased The Dip as a yearling from New Zealand. He was the winner of 10 races including the AJC Metropolitan Hcp, Chipping Norton Stks, Miller’s Lager Hcp and the SAJC Labour Day Cup. He ran fifth in the 1962 Melbourne Cup. The Dip was by Le Filou out of the non-winner, Cuddlesome, by Red Mars. Le Filou had been secured for stud duties to New Zealand for just 500 guineas due to his unfashionable French outcross pedigree, but in time he proved to be one of the great outcross influences whose stock won an extraordinary stream of Cups, classics, weight-forage and handicaps. At that time, a nick was emerging for Le Filou with mares carrying Red Mars and in 1963, Cummings returned to New Zealand hoping to buy The Dip’s yearling full sister. However, he could only manage to secure her through a lease agreement and he returned to Adelaide with the small, lightly framed chestnut, later named Light Fingers. On the track, Light Fingers surpassed all expectations with 15 wins from thirty-three starts and $109,470 in stakes. Her wins included the 1965 Melbourne Cup, VRC Oaks and AJC Oaks. Like Tesio’s first Derby winner, Cummings first Melbourne Cup winner, Light Fingers, also traced to Ghuznee by Pantaloon. In 1966 Light Fingers ran second in the Melbourne Cup behind another Cummings runner, Galilee. Purchased as a yearling in New Zealand in 1964, Galilee was described as a ‘cripple’ having an awkward action and unseemly conformation. But if ever there was a horse that points to the value Cummings placed on pedigree in his quest for a Melbourne Cup winner, that horse must surely be Galilee. Cummings says he purchased the unlikely champion on the basis of looking at the dam’s pedigree and noting what proportion of winners she has produced. By his own admission, consideration of ‘type’ was not a factor.

WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU However, it can be no coincidence that Galilee descended from the family as Sometime, the horse who had previously given Cummings victories in the South Australia St Ledger, Guineas and many weight-for-age races. Sometime accrued earnings of over $86,000. Sometime was by Summertime out of Nereid by Neptune. Nereid, traced to Stardancer by Martian out of Stepdancer. Stardancer was a full sister to Warstep, the champion money earner of the 1914-15 season who briefly held the record for career earnings for a mare. Warstep won every great staying race in New Zealand, often with the added impost of great weight. Another sister, Warlove, won the New Zealand Oaks in 1919 and brother, Wardancer, took the Dunedin Guineas in 1916. Stardancer won the 1912 CJC Stewards Handicap and was runner up in the CJC New Zealand Oaks. She later produced Auckland Cup winner, Starland and New Zealand Oaks winner, Starmist. So, it was to the family of Sometime that Cummings looked to when purchasing Galilee, a colt by Alcimedes out of Galston by Balloch. Galston was a non-winner, having been placed at her only run as a two-year-old and then retired. Galston’s dam was Nereid. The ‘cripple’ won 18 of 36 starts including the Melbourne Cup, CB Fisher Plate, Queen’s Plate, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, VATC Caulfield Cup, Toorak Handicap, Memsie Stakes, AJC Sydney Cup and Autumn Stakes. When he won the Melbourne Cup in 1966, Cummings became the first man ever to train first and second in the Melbourne Cup for two years running.

In 1967, Cummings produced another Melbourne Cup winner carrying the Le Filou, Red Mars nick. Red Handed was also by Le Filou out of Red Might by Red Mars. He had a club foot, paralyzed ear and a ‘head like a violin case’, but was the winner of 8 other races including the SAJC Queens Cup, Adelaide RC Alderman Cup and the Sir Stanley Murray Hcp. And again, Cummings went back to the same nick with a horse who promised much but was destined to go down in history as the Melbourne Cup winner that ‘might have been’. Cummings declared he was ‘as confident as he had ever been,’ of a Cup win with Big Philou, however, the horse was ‘got-at’ before the race and was scratched on the day. Big Philou was by Le Filou and traced to Cuddlesome by Red Mars. So, the lessons from Cummings and Tesio are revealed in the horses they purchased, bred and trained. Their horses tell the story of two men who looked to pedigree as their primary strategy to acquire the champions they were able to nurture as elite trainers. Their horses tell the story of the nicks, crosses and female families that both looked to repeatedly when breeding and buying, and how that knowledge raised them up to a lofty place in the history of the thoroughbred racehorse. But these few lessons are just the beginning, and so very much more is to be learned from the study of these two extraordinary lives defined by so many great horses.

Galilee followed that win four days later with another in the weight-for-age Fisher Plate at 2400 meters. In that race he defeated the reigning weight-for-age champion, Tobin Bronze with ease, and thwarted the attempt of jockey, Jim Johnson to make a clean sweep of the Melbourne weight-for-age races that Spring. He was the first horse since the second world war to win the Toorak Hcp, Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup and Fisher Plate in one season and the sixth horse to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the same year.

A Postscript: On the 14th September 2011, Vegas Showgirl delivered a pretty bay filly to the cover of Street Cry. The filly went through the ring at the 2013 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and was knocked down to Magic Bloodstock for the bargain price of $230,000. Sent to trainer, Chris Waller, the filly was named Winx and over the following four years astounded the racing world with 33 consecutive wins, including 25 at Group 1 level and at distances from 1300m to 2200m. Winx retired with prize money exceeding $26 million. I cannot help but wonder whether JB Cummings had his eye on that Street Cry filly as she went through the sales ring that day, and if he had managed to secure her, whether he could have resisted the temptation to stretch her out over 3200m one Tuesday afternoon, early in November... after all, Winx traces back to the family of Stardancer by Martian out of Stepdancer that Cummings knew so well and had given him the wonderful Sometime and Galilee all those years before. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2020

VALE BOB INGHAM Sydney businessman, philanthropist and racing industry stalwart Bob Ingham died on September 22, at the age of 88

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce our beloved father, Bob Ingham, passed away at home surrounded by his family, a family statement said. Giants of the New South Wales Thoroughbred Industry Bob and his brother Jack built the Ingham company into the largest producer of chickens and turkeys in Australia. The more silent of the partnership in the early days, Bob formed one of the largest racing and breeding empires seen in Australia with his brother. His father had had an interest in breeding horses and in addition to the poultry business the brothers also inherited a broodmare named Valiant Rose. The mare was a descendant of the great British racehorse Bend Or, an Epsom Derby winner and champion broodmare sire. Through Valiant Rose the Ingham brothers began to build what eventuallt became $250,000,000 breeding and racing operation, the largest in Australia. Their Vale Bob Ingham

equine empire included Woodlands Stud at Denman in the Hunter Valley, Crown Lodge racing stables at Warwick Farm in Sydney and Carbine Lodge racing stables at Flemington in Melbourne and racing stables in Adelaide and Brisbane. The most famous of the Ingham’s successful horses was Octagonal, the 1996 Australian Horse of the Year and a winner of multiple Group One races including the Cox Plate and the Australian Derby. It’s often said a legacy is what you leave behind and for Bob, and his late brother Jack, those words ring true through their establishment of the Woodlands breeding and racing empire. The Ingham brothers’ passion for the thoroughbred is something shared by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who purchased the entire Woodlands operation in 2008. Godolphin remain the beneficiary of Bob and Jack’s shared vision and their legacy remains the foundation of Godolphin Australia’s operation. Infrastructure such as Woodlands Stud, Crown Lodge and Carbine Lodge remains along with many high-class racehorses who are direct descendants of the Ingham brothers’ Woodlands pedigrees, headed today by Bivouac.

Godolphin Managing Director Vin Cox paid his respects, “On behalf of all at Godolphin we are saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Ingham. We would like to extend our thoughts to Bob’s family and friends while they celebrate the life of a true visionary.” The Ingham’s famous cerise colours were seen at the races most Saturdays and the great horses such as Lonhro and Octagonal etched their memory into the memories of several generations of racing fans. Having trained for Bob Ingham in recent years and his daughter Debbie Kepitis, famously one of the owners of the champion Winx, Chris Waller also had a special bond with Bob Ingham. “I had the opportunity to speak to this great man and mentor each week, including last Friday. Mr Ingham, along with Robby, Lyn, Debbie and John have given me a huge amount of support since I began training for them and the manner in which they conduct their family life and business has attracted recognition from all walks of life. Bob was also well-known for his philanthropy, with his daughter Debbie Kepitis carrying on the racing tradition as a part-owner of the great Winx, Waller remembered.

Other tributes included: “Bob Ingham was an outstanding man; it was a pleasure to have known him and his brother Jack. The Ingham brothers were an institution of Australian Racing for many years and leave behind a benchmark for us all to aspire too. They were outstanding owners and breeders at Woodlands Stud. Bob leaves behind a legacy of a true gentleman in life as well as on the turf.” Arthur Mitchell, Yarraman Park Stud “Bob Ingham & his brother Jack touched so many lives in many positive ways, including mine. I will never forget their unflinching support of Arrowfield when we needed it most & will cherish the memories of their friendship, success & joy in racing & breeding.” John Messara, Arrowfield Stud. “He was a pioneer and visionary of his day whose work and legacy will live on for many years. When I first entered the industry, he was of great assistance to me and provided much learning and information. His hard work, commitment and philosophy of ‘doing the right things and doing things right’ underpinned everything he did. He made us very proud. We will miss him greatly and are saddened by the loss of such a well-respected man in both racing and business who was also well known for his philanthropy.” Peter V’Landys – Racing NSW Bob Ingham’s philanthropic vision for an independent specialist centre for health and medical research in Liverpool was realised in 2012, when the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research was opened. His wife Norma died 10 years ago and he is survived by children Lyn, Debbie, Robby, and John, as well as 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family has asked in lieu of flowers, people can make a donation to the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.
