President’s Report
President’s Report It is my pleasure to present my first Presidents report for TBNSW. As we enter into the Winter months we are all aware that the start of the foaling season is only a couple of months away. Again this breeding season there is an impressive list of first season sires standing in NSW including The Autumn Sun, Kementari, Trapeze Artist, Written By, Prized Icon, Brave Smash as well as shuttlers Justify, Saxon Warrior and Mendelson. The very popular round of Stallion parades and Stud open days will commence prior to the breeding season and the information will be sent to members in due course. TBNSW in conjunction with Charles Sturt University Veterinary School are holding their annual breeders seminar in Wagga Wagga on Thursday 25th July 2019. This will be the fourth seminar and all presentations are interactive with great opportunity for questions. The topics are very relevant to all Stud owners and staff and it is a great refresher of knowledge just prior to the foaling and breeding season. Registration and program details are included in the Update and on the website. With the round of yearling sales drawing to a close for the season, breeders can reflect on some outstanding results. Both the Inglis Classic and Easter sale were very buoyant, particuarly at the top end of the market, however as an association we are very mindful that we need to increase participation across all levels to ensure a healthy industry. The highly successful Sydney Autumn racing carnival culminating in the retirement of the immortal Winx, will be remembered as a huge highlight. What an extraordinary achievement by all concerned. With the Spring carnival approaching, the excitement of the Everest and several new races will ensure an enormous amount of interest in Sydney racing. TBNSW will be again holding our annual awards ceremony at the ATC Directors Luncheon during the Everest Carnival, if any members would like to pre-book a table, please contact our office to receive your discounted member rate. Timeform Review
Simply the best...
Farewell to the amazing mare Winx Article by Les Young, photo Sharonlee Chapman
(bay mare, 2011, by Street Cry – Vegas Showgirl) Bred in NSW, by Fairway Thoroughbreds Race record: 43 starts, 37 wins, last 33 in succession Won 25 Group 1s (a world record) Prize money earned $A 26,451,175 (a world record) Peak Timeform Rating 134
Amazing mare Winx (Timeform 134) once again stole the show during the Sydney Autumn Carnival leading up to her retirement from racing following her comfortable victory in the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) before a 44,000 crowd at Randwick on April 13. This was her third successive win in the Queen Elizabeth, her 37th victory (equal with Phar Lap) and her 33rd successive win to amass a world record prizemoney total of $26,451,175. We may never see her like again although spiraling prizemoney around the world may in the next decade see her earnings record bettered. Winx did not venture out of Sydney for her final, four-start campaign, resuming after her fourth Cox Plate success last October in the Apollo Stakes (Gr.2, 1400m) on February 16 to easily defeat Happy Clapper (Teofilo) and Egg Tart (Sebring) in race record time.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
She again beat Happy Clapper (Timeform 129) second up in the ATC Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr.1,1600m), once more in race record time, at Randwick on March 2 before again showing her liking for wet tracks at Rosehill Gardens on March 23, scoring easily over the young rising star Brutal (O’Reilly) in the ATC George Ryder Stakes (Gr. 1, 1500m). The Chipping Norton was her fourth straight success in this race, equalling the effort of Tie The Knot (Nassipour), while her George Ryder victory was also the fourth in succession for Winx, a feat unmatched. Thank you for the memories Winx.

Other older middle distance horses Autumn racing really begins in late summer with Melbourne starting a little earlier than Sydney although in Sydney we saw Godolphin’s top four-year-old mare Alizee (Sepoy) resume early to win the ATC Christmas Classic (Canterbury Classic) (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on December 29 while in Melbourne the now retired sprinting mare Whispering Brook (Hinchinbrook) was out early to take the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) on New Year’s Day before going on to also win the Australia Stakes (Stanley Wootton Stakes) (Gr 2,1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 25. Alizee (Sepoy)
Brutal (O_Reilly)

Godolphin’s handsome imported gelding Avilius (Pivotal) recovered well from his injury-plagued performance in last November’s VRC Melbourne Cup to bounce back in Melbourne in February with successive victories in the T.S.Carlyon Cup (Gr 3,1600m) and in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2,1800m) to advance his claims of being one of the best older middle distance horses in the country.Avilius then suffered another minor injury when seemingly disappointing in finishing fifth as favourite in the VRC Australian Cup (Gr. 1, 2000m), a race won by another imported gelding in Harlem (Champs Elysees) who repeated his success of a year earlier. Returned to Sydney, Avilius then showed his best form with backto-back victories in the ATC Ranvet Stakes (Gr.1,2000m) and in the Tancred Stakes (Gr. 1, 2400m) during the Rosehill carnival in March but he did not appear at The Championships when action moved to Randwick.Avilius has a Timeform rating of 125.

Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense)
Older sprinter/milers Godophin’s giant mare Alizee (Timeform 121) again showed her class defeating Le Romain (Hard Spun) in the Expressway Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 2 before going to Melbourne to down Group 1 winners Malaguerra (Magnus) and Hartnell (Authorized) in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 23. After finishing third in the rich, inaugural All-Star Mile (1600m) in Melbourne on March 16 Alizee came back to Sydney to contest the Doncaster (Gr. 1, 1600m) but finished a disappointing 17th behind exciting threeyear-old colt Brutal (Timeform 122) before finishing her autumn assignments when sixth to narrow winner Kenedna (Not a Single Doubt) in the Coolmore Legacy Queen of the Turf Stakes (Gr.1,1600m) at Randwick on April 13.
Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt)
The Coolmore Legacy marked the last racetrack appearance of second placed Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense), raced by her breeder Alan Osburg, before her retirement to stud .Two starts earlier Dixie Blossoms (Timeform 120) had captured a deserved Group 1 in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens , going out as earner of $1,583,910. Also retired after the Coolmore Legacy was Dixie Blossoms’ equally talented stablemate in the Ron Quinton barn, Daysee Doom (Domesday), winner of the 2018 Coolmore Classic. Avilius (Pivotal)

Other older mares A number of other older mares raced prominently at the Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals, among them the Ramsey family’s homebred Champagne Cuddles (Not a Single Doubt), the Esplin family’s homebred White Moss (Mossman), Eckstein (I Am Invincible), Alassio (Foxwedge), Jamaican Rain (Manhattan Rain), Oregon’s Day (Domesday),Princess Posh (Canford Cliffs), Nettoyer (Sebring), Spanish Reef (Lope de Vega) and Winter Bride (Not a Single Doubt).
Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt)
Champagne Cuddles won the ATC Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 9 and then after two below par efforts in top company bounced back to be fourth in the ATC T.J. Smith Stakes (Gr.1,1200m) on April 9 before filling the same spot a week later in the ATC All Aged Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m). Grey mare White Moss showed her best form to take the ATC Millie Fox Stakes (Gr. 2, 1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 23, was well back in the Coolmore Classic but proved that form wrong when winning the ATC Sapphire Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Randwick on April 13 before heading to the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Nettoyer (Sebring) 8
Eckstein scored a well deserved black type win in the ATC Southern Cross Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) at Randwick on February 16 before finishing fifth to Alassio in the ATC Guy Walter Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019

Sunlight (Zoustar)
the same track on March 2.Alassio had previously taken the ATC Triscay Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) in which subsequent Brisbane Group 2 winner I Am Excited (Snitzel) finished third. Another Sydney black type winner in March was Segenhoe Thoroughbreds’ Winter Bride in the ATC Wenona Girl Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) in which she defeated subsequent Adelaide Group 1 winner Spright (Hinchinbrook) before finishing third to White Moss in the Sapphire Stakes. Trainer Kris Lees sent out Princess Posh to beat males in the Newcastle Newmarket (Gr. 3, 1400m) on March 8 and the mare further proved her quality at her following start when third to Dixie Blossoms and El Dorado Dreaming (Ilovethiscity) in the Coolmore Classic. Five-year-old Nettoyer was another mare to record a black type win during the Sydney autumn carnival when successful in the ATC Aspiration Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m). Three Melbourne-trained mares, Jamaican Rain, Oregon’s Day and Spanish Reef, had feature race victories during the Melbourne carnival.Jamaican Rain captured the Mannerism Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m) at Caulfield, Oregon’s Day won the Frances Tressady Stakes (Gr. 3,1400m) at Flemington and at NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
Winter Bride (Not A Single Doubt)
the same track Spanish Reef was successful in the Matron Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) before finishing second in the Sunline Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley.
her final autumn appearance in what was arguably the most competitive short course test of the autumn in the T.J. Smith Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) on April 6.
Older mares captured two of the top sprints in Melbourne early in the autumn with Booker (Written Tycoon) coming from the rear to down Godolphin’s colt Encryption (Lonhro) in the time honoured Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m) at Caulfield and six-year-old In Her Time (Time Thief) taking the VRC Lightning Stakes (Gr. 1, 1000m) at Flemington in 56.69, beating Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) and Sunlight (Zoustar).
On a soft track Sunlight finished a brave third to outstanding six-yearold gelding Santa Ana Lane (Lope de Vega) who scored decisively by three-and a half-lengths with consistent Group 1 bridesmaid yet again a strong finishing second. That performance influenced Timeform to make Santa Ana Lane Australia’s highest rated active older horse with a figure of 130.
The strength of this form was emphasized when the three clashed again at their next starts in the historic VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr. 1,1200m) but this time threeyear-old filly Sunlight (Timeform 119) triumphed under her light weight of 50.5kg, beating Osborne Bulls (Timeform 123) in 1:08.25 with In Her Time fading to sixth.New Aquis (NSW) sire Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) was an honourable third. Super tough filly Sunlight continued her busy autumn program at Moonee Valley on March 19, defeating subsequent Adelaide Group 1 winner Spright by threequarters of a length in the William Reid Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) before
The unlucky Osborne Bulls confirmed his quality yet again just a week later in the ATC All Aged Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) but once more had to settle for second, his powerful late finish just failing to pick up the very talented and consistent Pierata (Pierro). Shortly after the All Aged Stakes Pierata was sold to Aquis and after a spell he is to be set for The Everest before beginning a stud career in 2020. The T.J. Smith Stakes marked the final track appearance of Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) who was unplaced after pulling up with a problem,He had earlier showed he was as good as ever with a brilliant success in the ATC Canterbury Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) on March 9, beating the top class mare Shoals (Fastnet Rock) 9

who has also been retired.Trapeze Artist begins his breeding career at Widden Stud in September at a fee of $88,000 and looks one of the best prospects among the new sires of 2019. Also demanding mention among the star older sprinters is the gelded Nature Strip (Nicconi), switched to the Waller stable after the disqualification of his previous trainer Darren Weir. Nature Strip (Nicconi)
Chris Waller has tried to get Nature Strip to settle better and had immediate success with the four-year-old with a win in the Rubiton Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) in Melbourne early in the autumn but he then failed in the Oakleigh Plate before returning to his best on a heavy track at Rosehill Gardens on March 23 to beat Pierata and the upand-coming Easy Eddie (Super Easy) in The Galaxy (Gr. 1, 1100m). Another good Melbourne sprinter seen in Sydney over the autumn was Manuel (Commands), winner of the C.F. Orr Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) in early February beating Land of Plenty (Stratum) and Kementari (Lonhro) then later in Sydney he was runner up to Siren’s Fury (Myboycharlie) in the ATC Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) before a fifth to Pierata in the All Aged Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m.

Imported stallion Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars) impressed in winning the VRC Blamey Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m) at Flemington on March 2 before journeying to Sydney where he was not troubled by the wet track in taking the ATC Ajax Stakes (Gr.2, 1500m) on March 16 before finishing well back in the Group 1 Doncaster. 11

Three-year-olds Apart from the previously mentioned Sunlight, many three-year-olds impressed in both the Melbourne and Sydney during the autumn and, encouragingly, not just over sprint distances. Timeform’s highest rated threeyear-old of the season is Arrowfield Stud’s new sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) who continued on from his great form in the spring to have three unbeaten runs, retiring as the winner of eight of his nine starts (he was a very unlucky third at his other start) to earn $3,455,371. First up The Autumn Sun defeated Vegadaze (Lope de Vega) on a soft track in the ATC Hobartville Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 23.On a good track on March 9 The Autumn Sun was then too good for the high class fillies Fundamentalist (Not a Single Doubt) and Nakeeta Jane (So You Think) in the Randwick Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) before what proved to be his final appearance at Rosehill Gardens on March 23 in the Rosehill Guineas 12

Angel Of Truth (Animal Kingdom)
(Gr. 1, 2000m).Faced with a heavy track and a distance perhaps at the end of his stamina range The Autumn Sun won many new admirers as he came out on top to prevail narrowly over Arrogant (Ocean Park) (Timeform 120) showing the courage so associated with the progeny of his maternal grandsire Galileo. Being a son of the wonderful sire-of-sires Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) from an Aga Khan-bred mare from a top European family and not short of speed, The Autumn Sun is surely an exciting sire prospect and is assured of great support from quality mares so much is expected of him at stud. Another exceptional three-year-old colt emerged in Sydney during the autumn in the shape of future Newgate Farm sire Brutal (O’Reilly) who could become a superstar next spring. A first up third to the mare Eckstein in the ATC Southern Cross (Gr. 3,1200m) on February 16, Brutal was then a little out of his depth in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr.1, 1200m) before being stepped up to a longer distance in the ATC George Ryder Stakes (Gr. 1, 1500m) on a heavy track when he showed his class and potential to be second to the mighty Winx.Under the light weight of 49.5kg Brutal then lived up to that potential in the Doncaster Mile (Gr. 1, 1600m), scoring a dashing victory over Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) and the veteran Hartnell (Authorized) on April 6. Sadly we did not see star Western Australian filly Arcadia Queen (Pierro), rated by Timeform at 121, NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
in action in the eastern states over the autumn but we hope she may make the trip this spring. In her absence, though, Tasmanian-bred and trained Mystic Journey (Needs Further) staked a strong claim to be recognised as Australia’s best three-year-old filly with two stunning, winning performances, the first a decisive victory against males in the VRC Australian Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Flemington on March 2 in which she beat Hawkshot (Fiorente) and Amphitrite (Sebring). She then set the seal on her three-yearold career with another impressive victory over older horses in the rich new event, the VRC All-Star Mile (1600m), defeating Godolphin’s runners Hartnell and Alizee.Timeform has given Mystic Journey a rating of 124, higher than any other filly of her age. The Australian Guineas was a strong form event as Hawkshot had earlier been successful in the MRC Autumn Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) while last spring’s MRC Thousand Guineas winner Amphitrite had won the VRC Vanity Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m) at her previous start beating the sometimes wayward Verry Elleegant (Zed) who went on to great success at the Sydney autumn carnival. Verry Elleegant could hardly have been more impressive in her hat-trick of triumphs in Sydney, taking the ATC Phar Lap Stakes (Gr. 2, 1500m), the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m), both on heavy tracks, before proving she was just as effective on a good track in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m).

TImeform Review (continued)
Nakeeta Jane (So You Think),bred in NSW by the Towell family’s Janath Pty. Ltd, was another three-year-old filly to show great ability during the Sydney autumn carnival. She started off her campaign in the ATC Light Fingers Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) in beating Madam Rouge (Zoustar) and Pohutukawa (Medaglia d’Oro) who later went on to success in the Kembla Grange Classic (Gr. 3, 1600m).
Verry Elleegant (Zed)
A strong finishing sprint then brought Nakeeta Jane a narrow win in the ATC Surround Stakes (Gr.1, 1400m) beating the consistent Fundamentalist before she was placed third to The Autumn Sun and Fundamentalist in the ATC Randwick Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m).Later she again ran well on a wet track when fourth behind Verry Elleegant in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m). Other three-year-olds to perform well in feature events in Melbourne in the autumn were the colt Global Exchange (Dundeel), the gelding The Inevitable (Dundeel) and the fillies Spanish Whisper (Lope de Vega), Qafila (Not a Single Doubt) and Princess Jenni (High Chaparral). Global Exchange won three races in a row including the MRC Autumn Classic (Gr.2,1800m) and the MVRC Alister Clark Stakes (Gr. 2, 2040m) while The Inevitable provided another stakes winner for his young Arrowfield Stud sire Dundeel (High Chaparral) in the VRC C.S. Hayes Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m).
Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt)
Microphone (Exceed And Excel)
14
Spanish Whisper captured the VRC Kewney Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at Flemington but for toughness and versatility it is hard to go past the Hayes/Dabernig-trained, Shadwellowned Qafila, a brilliant, early stakes winner as a juvenile who started her autumn threeyear-old campaign with victory in the MRC Armanasco Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) before an unsuccessful foray to Sydney.Qafila, though, quickly bounced back in Adelaide, finishing a somewhat unlucky fourth in the Schweppes Oaks (G. 1, 2000m) before giving her sire Not a Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) his 10th Group 1 winner when untroubled by the distance to down colts and geldings in the 2019 SAJC South Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m). Kudos should also go to Princess Jenni who followed up a stakes win in Melbourne to reach a new peak of form in taking the SAJC Schweppes Oaks (Gr.1, 2000m).
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
Returning to the Sydney autumn carnival, a new sprinting star among the threeyear-olds emerged in Not a Single Doubt’s gelded son Classique Legend who excited racegoers with three successive restricted wins before a very unlucky third in the ATC Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m), a loss he quickly avenger by beating Jonker (Spirit of Boom) and Avantage (Fastnet Rock) in the Arrowfield Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Randwick on April 13.Classique Legend’s Hong Kong-based owner has purchased a slot in next October’s The Everest which may provide the ultimate test. Mention of New Zealand-trained filly Avantage reminds us of her courageous earlier performance at Rosehill Gardens on March 23 when she captured the ATC Birthday Card Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m). Great to see an Australian-bred horse triumph in the ATC Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) after the Gwenda Markwelltrained gelding Angel of Truth (Animal Kingdom) with Corey Brown in the saddle gave a brilliant, front running display, repeating what he did a week earlier in the ATC Tulloch Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) on March 30.Second in both races was Madison County (Pins).
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
By a Dubai World Cup and Kentucky Derby winner who formerly shuttled to Arrowfield Stud, Angel of Truth was bred by Ross Williams’ Superhorse Trust. He is out of a mare by former Darley shuttler Bernardini and has a current Timeform rating of 120. New Zealander The Chosen One (Savabeel) after a fourth in the Australian Derby had a stylish win in the ATC Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m). Sebring’s son Ringerdingding staged a typical late charge to win the ATC Carbine Club Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) at Randwick on April 6 and should pick up more important races in the spring. Final comment on this crop of three-yearold fillies concerns Krone (Eurozone), Aliferous (Hinchinbrook) and Laburnum (Denman) who each became black type winners at the Sydney autumn carnival with a special mention, too, of Cressfield-bred Frankely Awesome (Frankel),second in the Kembla Grange Classic and the Vinery Stud Stakes before placing third to Verry Elleegant and Scarlet Dream (Sebring) in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m).

Two-year-olds Darley-bred and Godolphin-raced youngsters dominated the feature juvenile events in both Melbourne and Sydney throughout the autumn carnivals until Castelvecchio (Dundeel) emerged at the end of the Sydney carnival to challenge Godolphin’s colt Microphone (Exceed and Excel) for the honour of being the top two-year-old of the 2018/19 season.
Libertini (I Am Invincible)
Godolphin’s Lonhro filly Lyre captured a Blue Diamond lead up event before a stylish, strong finishing victory in the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Caulfield over Lankan Star (Nicconi). She then came to Sydney where she powered home on the heavy track to place third in the ATC Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) behind Godolphin’s all-the-way winner Kiamichi (Sidestep) with her stablemate Microphone making it a Godolphin trifecta. Kiamichi a week before the Golden Slipper had also led throughout to take the ATC Magic Night Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) and she further proved her tough constitution, racing for the third successive Saturday when deadheating for third to Microphone and Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) in the ATC Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr.1, 1400m).
Bellevue Hill (Pierro) NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
A great advertisement for her Darley-owned first crop sire, Kiamichi is by Sidestep (Exceed and Excel), Australia’s champion two-year-old colt of 2012/13, a Golden Slipper runner up from the family of champion Emancipation. 17
Australian Timeform Ratings
Kiamichi (Sidestep)
Anaheed (Fastnet Rock)
Godolphin’s young trainer James Cummings and his team have done great things with their youngsters in placing them to advantage and keeping them up and no individual better reflected this than Microphone who won a Listed race in Melbourne on February 16 before coming to Sydney to record an eye-catching victory in the ATC Skyline Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Randwick on March 2 when the track was good. This proved to be one of the key juvenile events of the autumn as second placed Cosmic Force (Deep Field) at his next start had a seven lengths plus victory in the ATC Pago Pago Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) and the late-closing third placegetter Castelvecchio went on to dead-heat for third in the Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes before relishing a longer distance again to be an impressive victor in the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m). Timeform has Castelvecchio and Microphone sharing top rating of 121 among the two-year-olds with Kiamichi the highest rated filly on 118. Bred and sold by Arrowfield, Castelvecchio started his first campaign in dramatic fashion , winning first up over 1200m at Canterbury before unleashing a powerhouse finish from 14th to snatch the rich Inglis Millennium (RL,1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 9.He has so far earned more than $1.6 million with likely much more to come in the spring.
Castelvecchio (Dundeel)
18
Melbourne-trained Loving Gaby, one of a record 27 stakes winners this season for her remarkable sire I Am Invincible, has strong claims to be regarded as one of the best juvenile fillies of the season. She won the MRC Chairman’s Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) at Caulfield in early February, looked unlucky when unplaced in the Blue Diamond Stakes, finished fourth in the Golden Slipper then recorded successive seconds at Group 1 level in the Inglis ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and in the ATC Champagne Stakes.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
Bellevue Hill (Timeform 116) first drew attention to his ability by winning the Black Opal Preview at Canberra and then was second to Yes Yes Yes with Dubious third in the pivotal ATC Todman Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) before taking the ATC Baillieu Handicap (Gr. 3, 1400m on March 30 but may have peaked before his unplaced effort in the ATC Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes. The speedy Time To Reign was something of an enigma. After scoring brilliantly in the ATC Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) defeating Godolphin’s highly regarded colt Tassort (Brazen Beau), he could finish only sixth in the ATC Todman Stakes before a better effort when fifth in the Golden Slipper. Tassort was not fit to continue his autumn program after the Silver Slipper but may prove a big player next spring. McLaren (Exceed and Excel) was touted as a Golden Slipper contender after his impressive victory in the ATC Canonbury Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) on February 2 but two subsequent runs when fourth and third in black type races seemed to expose his limitations at this stage of his career. Anaheed, a daughter of former top filly Rostova, suggested she has good prospects next spring after winning the ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on March 2, finishing a respectable sixth in the Golden Slipper, then completing her autumn with a win in the ATC Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) . Time To Reign (Time For War)
Over the autumn Godolphin had a number of other black type winners among their two-year-olds, notably Amercement (Lonhro) in the ATC Widden Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m), Bivouac (Exceed and Excel) in the ATC Lonhro Plate (Listed,1100m) and in the ATC Kindergarten Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m), Tenley (Medaglia d’Oro) in the ATC Reisling Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), Pin Sec (Lonhro) in the ACT Black Opal Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) and La Tene (Helmet) in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m). The ATC Kindergarten Stakes was memorable for the stunning debut second of Gerry Harvey’s superbly bred filly Libertini (I Am Invincible) whose dam Aloha (Encosta de Lago) won the Coolmore Classic and other feature races. She quickly confirmed the good impression created in that run by winning at Randwick on Anzac Day before an impressive success in the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone and is now spelling before being set for the Princess Series in Sydney in the spring. Behind the youngsters already mentioned is an army of other talented two-year-olds which raced during the autumn, among them the colts Bellevue Hill (Pierro), Time To Reign (Time For War), Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) and Dubious (Not a Single Doubt) and the filly Anaheed (Fastnet Rock).

BRAVE SMASH Bay horse
Standing at Aquis Farm, Hunter Valley
Fee: $22,000
A member of the globally recognised Sunday Silence sire-line, Brave Smash was a stakes winner in Japan, his country of birth, before being purchased privately to race in Australia by Australian Bloodstock. Brave Smash highlighted his class from the time he arrived with a Listed victory and two black type placed performances from his first three starts, before the son of Tosen Phantom went on to finish third in the inaugural running of the $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick behind Redzel and Vega Magic. Settling just off the speed in the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, Brave Smash showed a tremendous turn of foot, charging through a gap to register his first Gr.1 win, defeating dual Gr.1 winner Tosen Stardom with ease. After further Gr.1 placings in the Newmarket Handicap and the Moir Stakes, Brave Smash achieved his second Gr.1 win, defeating Gr.1 Randwick Guineas winner Kementari in the MRC Manikato Stakes (1200m), achieving a time of 1:09.36, faster than previous winners Chautauqua, Lankan Rupee, Buffering, Sepoy and Redoute’s Choice. Brave Smash is the best offspring of Tosen Phantom, a grand-son of legendary sire Sunday Silence and his female family features Japanese Champions and multiple Gr.1 winners Daiwa Scarlet, Daiwa Major and Vermilion.

HARRY ANGEL Bay horse
Standing at Darley, Kelvinside
Fee: $22,000
Harry Angel began his stud career earlier this year at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket as the highest-rated sprinter to retire to stud in Britain for more than 30 years. He has already proved extremely popular in the northern hemisphere and was oversubscribed during his first season. At two, Harry Angel broke his maiden in the G2 Mill Reef Stakes, earning a rating 9lbs superior to his sire Dark Angel’s achieved in the same race. In a dazzling season at three, he won the G1 July Cup and the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup (taking the latter by the widest margin in recent history), having announced his presence among the top rank of sprinters in the G2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. He ended the year rated 132 by Timeform, level with Muhaarar, and the best by any sprinter to retire to stud in Britain since 1985. The panel of international handicappers duly assessed him the world Champion sprinter, two points and more above Battaash, Chautauqua, Lady Aurelia, Redzel and Caravaggio. Trained throughout his career by Clive Cox, he returned at four in the G2 Duke Of York Stakes, again retaining his peak Timeform mark when accounting for Brando by two lengths, conceding 5lb.

JUSTIFY Chestnut horse
Standing at Coolmore, Australia
Fee: $POA
The 2019 Southern Hemisphere breeding season will see the arrival in the Hunter Valley of the only undefeated US Triple Crown winner. Justify won each of his six career starts including four at Group 1 level when becoming just the 13th Triple Crown winner in history. The striking son of Scat Daddy is the best of 27 individual Group I winners for his sire who has already proven himself as a sire of sires through the deeds of his son No Nay Never. US Horse of the Year in 2018, Justify will stand alongside fellow Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, in what is a huge coup for Australian breeders. There have been two US Triple Crown winners in the last 40 years and thirteen in history. They will both stand alongside our very own Australian Triple Crown winning two-year-old Pierro, who has already proven himself as one of the best sires in the country. It’s probably the first time in history that three Triple Crown winners have stood at one stud in the same season anywhere in the world. It is hugely exciting and we are very much looking forward to showing Justify to Australasian breeders in a couple of months’ time.

KEMENTARI Brown horse
Standing at Darley, Kelvinside
Fee: $33,000
Kementari showed huge talent from very early on in his career, with a four-length victory over 1,400m at Randwick on his second start at two. He opened his Classic season with promise, making the frame in both the G2 Run To The Rose and G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude, before finishing the unluckiest of seconds in the G1 Caulfield Guineas. Behind him that day was G1 Blue Diamond winner Catchy, plus future G1 ATC Derby winner Levendi. After a summer spell, Kementari returned for the autumn with successive wins in the 1,200m G3 Eskimo Prince Stakes and the 1,400m G2 Hobartville Stakes. He then lined up in the G1 Randwick Guineas as favourite to take the coveted race and certainly did not disappoint, once again demonstrating an explosive turn of foot to beat home nine G1 performers including Trapeze Artist, Pierata, D’Argento and Ace High, confirming his place as Australia’s leading three-year-old. His Randwick Guineas victory was in record time, and by the widest margin since the race was moved to its present format and course. This was enough to convince trainer James Cummings to take on world Champion Winx (Street Cry) in the G1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill, where he finished just 1.6 lengths behind the wonder mare and third to three-time G1 winner Happy Clapper (Teofilo).

Mendelssohn’s sire Scat Daddy is inbred to Mr Prospector 4 x 2 through Daughters. Introducing sons of Mr Prospector in mares’ pedigrees is a proven pattern for Scat Daddy, who has produced five Gr 1 winners (including No Nay Never) out of Mr Prospector line mares. Mr Prospector line damsires include Gone West, Machiavellian, Hussonet, Straight Strike, Unbridled’s Song, Kingmambo, E Dubai, Rhythm, Distorted Humor, Thunder Gulch, Vettori, Woodman, Fappiano and Geiger Counter. Scat Daddy’s 2018 champion 2yo filly in Europe Skitter Scatter is out of a Street Cry (by Machiavellian) mare. Prized Icon boasts the looks to match his outstanding racetrack record and pedigree. His enormous talent was evident from the day racegoers first laid eyes on Prized Icon, who was stakes placed on debut over 1000 metres behind subsequent Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. Prized Icon was never out of a place in seven starts as a two-year-old – a season highlighted by his Group 1 win in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick. He then proved himself to be a top class three-year-old with a breathtaking two-and-a-half length win in the time-honoured Victoria Derby at Flemington. A debut winner at two, Real Steel capped a stellar career in Japan with his Meydan Dubai Turf G1 victory on World Cup night in 2016. Santos then booked his place in the Gr.1 ATC Golden Slipper (1200m) with a tenacious victory in the Gr.2 ATC Skyline Stakes (1200m), a race steeped in stallion making history – won by the likes of Hinchinbrook, Manhattan Rain, All American, Casino Prince, Snitzel, Choisir, Viscount and Strategic – all Group 1 producing sires. Bred by Emirates Park, the breeders of many successful Gr.1 winning and producing sires including Encosta de Lago, Dash For Cash and Al Maher, Santos comes from one of their most successful families being a half-brother to Japanese Gr.3 winner Melagrana from a half-sister to Group winners Mutawaajid, Adeewin and Fatoon, the dam of Gr.1 ATC Epsom Handicap (1600m) winner Fat Al. SAXON WARRIOR Bay horse
Standing at Coolmore, Australia
Fee: $24,750
Saxon Warrior is one of the best sons of Japanese super-sire Deep Impact. He defeated multiple Group I winner Roaring Lion in the Racing Post Trophy-Gr.1 to remain unbeaten at two and displayed a devastating turn of foot to win the 2,000 Guineas-Gr.1 at Newmarket, again beating Roaring Lion as well as Epsom Derby winner Masar and Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Expert Eye. Saxon Warrior’s dam Maybe was European Champion 2YO Filly of 2011 after going unbeaten in five starts at two from 1,200m to 1,400m including the Moyglare Stakes-Gr.1 and the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Just like Pierro, currently the best young sire in Australia, Saxon Warrior come from the Turn-To sire line and descends from the Cambrienne dame line. Both Pierro and Saxon Warrior were also topclass Gr.1 winners at 2 and 3 years. Pierro has made a remarkable start to his stud career and 9 of his 10 Group winners are out of Danehill line mares so the similarly-bred Saxon Warrior should follow suit. Deep Impact has worked very well with Storm Cat, with seven of his Gr 1 winners being out of Storm Cat mares. This line can be found in Australasia via influences such as Hennessy (son Johannesburg and grandson Turffontein), Catrail, Giant’s Causeway, Tale of the Cat, Shamardal, Van Nistelrooy and Staute of Liberty. Mares carrying Archway will be interesting with Saxon Warrior. Not only is he by Goody Two Shoes family member Thatching, but he is also a half brother to Saxon Warrior’s third dam, Rain Flower. Similarly, mares carrying Rain Flower’s half brother Shinko King - a sire by Sadler’s Wells’ brother Fairy King – also create line breeding to Saxon Warrior’s tail female line and add another line to Goody Two Shoes.

THE AUTUMN SUN Bay horse
Standing at Arrowfield Stud
Fee: $77,000
Sensational 5-time Group 1 winner The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice-Azmiyna by Galileo) heads a trio of new sires at Arrowfield this year. An unbeaten Group 1 winner at two, The Autumn Sun is the only 3YO to win the Golden Rose and the Caulfield, Randwick & Rosehill Guineas. The Autumn Sun’s pedigree represents the dedicated work of a decade-long joint venture between the Aga Khan Studs & Arrowfield, bringing together the best of European female families and Australian sire-power to create a champion. Redoute’s Choice was Australia’s supersire, the inheritor of breedshaper Danehill’s crown and already a legend when, at the age of 18, he met the young Aga Khan mare Azmiyna. By the great European sire Galileo, she is a half-sister to European Champion, four-time Group 1 winner & leading sire Azamour. Azmiyna is a fourth-generation descendant of a rare single-lot auction purchase made by HH The Aga Khan at Deauville in 1974. The subject of that purchase was the 3YO filly Arcana (Diatome-Dreida by La Varende), bred by Baron Thierry von Zuylen de Nyevelt. Aided by the Aga Khan Studs’ renowned patience and judicious management, Arcana’s family has produced numerous Group & Listed winners in the past 25 years including Group 1 winners Astarabad, Azamour and now The Autumn Sun.

Standing at Widden Stud
Fee: $88,000
By champion sire Snitzel, Trapeze Artist was the Champion 3YO Colt in Australia last season and has earned in excess of $5.5 million. His Group 1 wins include a race record in the $2.5m WFA T.J Smith Stakes Gr1 (1200m), a Randwick track record in the $1M WFA All Aged Stakes Gr1 (1400m), another Randwick track record in the $500k WFA Canterbury Stakes Gr1 (1300m). He also won the $1M Golden Rose Gr1 (1400m) by almost five lengths, defeating the likes of Merchant Navy, Pariah and Menari. In 2018 Trapeze Artist became the Longines’ World’s Highest Rated Sprinter. “Trapeze Artist is without question one of the most decorated & best credentialled horses to retire to stud in years. A multiple recordbreaking sprinter, a 3yo that dominated his elders at WFA level and by the Champion sire in Snitzel. I can’t think of an Australian colt to retire this season with anywhere near the level of Trapeze Artist’s achievements”. Said Widden’s Antony Thompson

An explosive son of leading speed sire Written Tycoon, Written By displayed his precocity by winning his first four starts in succession highlighted by a dominant three length victory in the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m). “Champion 2yo colts have an incredible record at stud. From Luskin Star to Canny Lad and more recently Sebring & Pierro. In fact, Written By’s pedigree even features champion 2yo colts & successful sires Rory’s Jester, Marscay & Vain.” Said owner & Hall of Famer Neville Begg. Physically, Written By is an awesome individual. Strong, imposing and perfectly built for the Australian conditions & commercial market. Not since Pierro in 2013, has an Australian Group I winning 2YO retired to stud that is completely free of Danehill blood ensuring Written By is as a beautiful outcross to the many Danehill/Danzig line mares in the southern hemisphere.

Redoute’s Choice...
Redoute’s Choice... his influence will live on The death of multiple champion sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) on March 26, aged 22, at Arrowfield Stud, Scone, NSW, brought to an end an epic stud career but his influence will live on for the next 50 years. Article| by Les Young
As the best stallion son of supreme shuttler Danehill, we shall also remember Redoute’s Choice for his excellence as a racehorse before John Messara secured him to begin his breeding career at Arrowfield as a four-year-old in 2000. Big and powerfully built, Redoute’s Choice was bred and raced by Muzaffar Yaseen of Teeley Assets and was trained in Melbourne by Rick Hore-Lacy, contesting 10 races at two and three years, winning five including four Group 1s and placing three times to earn just over $1.5 million. He showed speed and high level ability from the start, winning a Listed juvenile event over 1100m Caulfield first time out before returning to that track to defeat the top class Testa Rossa (Perugino) and Dangerous (Danehill) in the 1999 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 1:08.7.
The magnificent Redoute’s Choice
32
Redoute’s Choice almost certainly would have won the 1999 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at his following start but was sensationally scratched a few hours before the race when found to have a high temperature so was not seen again until the spring when he showed his fighting qualities to again beat Testa Rossa in a memorable edition of the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) with other victories at three years coming in the MVRC Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) against older horses and in another weight-forage test, the C.F. Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), in which he achieved his peak Timeform rating of 126. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
Tanya Bartlett’s statue of Redoute’s Choice greets visitors to Arrowfield Stud
Standing his first season at a fee of $30,000, Redoute’s Choice’s covering price increased tenfold to $330,000 seven seasons later. Blessed with high fertility, Redoute’s Choice has to date left 166 individual stakes winners, 106 at Group level, across seven countries and 34 individual Group 1 winners of both sexes with an almost equal division. His progeny have so far earned more than $157 million. Australia’s leading first crop sire of 2003/04, Redoute’s Choice was three times crowned champion sire in Australia (in 2005/06,2009/10 and 2013/14) and also twice headed the list of sires of two-year-olds in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Able to impart to his progeny speed, courage and a degree of stamina, Redoute’s Choice has sired a long and consistent parade of racing stars ranging from outstanding two-year-olds, champion sprinters and a select group of Derby,Oaks and Guineas winners. He has been represented by Group 1 winners not only in Australia but also in New Zealand and South Africa as well as black type winners in Europe resulting from two seasons shuttling to the Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneval in France. While champions Miss Finland, Lankan Rupee and now The Autumn Sun are the highest prize money earners by Redoute’s Choice, others by him to earn the champion tag are Samantha Miss, Fashions Afield, Stratum, God’s Own, Nadeem and South African stars Musir, Majmu and Mustaaqeem. Understandably yearlings by Redoute’s Choice have been in high demand in the sale ring since his early NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Summer/Autumn 2019
days, selling for as much as the Australian record price of $5 million paid at the 2013 Australian Easter Sale for the ill-fated half-brother to Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) from Helsinge (Desert Sun). The impact of Redoute’s Choice as a sire of racehorses has been enormous but pales when you consider the legacy he has already left through his many sire sons and broodmares. Other than his sire Danehill, Redoute’s Choice is recognised as perhaps the finest sire-of-sires in Australian history having, at this point, 26 sons which between them have left 286 stakes winners worldwide, most prominent of them Arrowfield’s Snitzel, heading for his third successive champion sire’s title in Australia this season.Snitzel has 13 Group 1 winners to his credit and giving him significant support is fellow Arrowfield resident Not a Single Doubt with deceased Golden Slipper winner Stratum another Redoute’s Choice sire making a solid contribution. Redoute’s Choice broodmares are likely to give the deceased son of Danehill his first champion maternal grandsire title in Australia this season and so far they are responsible for 13 Group 1 winners, among them sensational young sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and exciting stallion prospects like Sacred Falls (O’Reilly), Kementari (Lonhro) and The Mission (Choisir). To date daughters of Redoute’s Choice have produced 86 black type winners and you can’t help but feel the beneficial influence of Redoute’s Choice is still only in it’s early stages . 33

Breeder of young sire Overshare Mr David Fuller Article| C Fuller de Pellegrini & J Christopher
David Fuller purchased his most successful horse,four- time Group 1 winner Metal Bender (Danasinga), at the 2007 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $160,000.He was trained by Jack Denham until Jack’s passing in 2009 and then by Chris Waller, retiring with earnings of $1.9 million. Metal Bender until retirement earning a total $1,900,600 in prizemoney. Metal Bender was named thus, as David didn’t like to self-aggrandise and being the founding owner of NEPEAN Engineering since 1974, he grew the business into Australia’s largest privately-owned engineering, mining service and industrial manufacturer as well as an international powerhouse, David would often humbly say he was just a “metal bender from Narellan”. David has bred and raced a number of successful horses bringing in over $3m in prizemoney, breeding the young stallion Overshare now standing at Spendthrift in Victoria, David was an active owner breeder and enjoyed the thrill of the Thoroughbred Industry, a few of his success stories; Nuclear Sky (Nuclear Freeze x Sky Queen), Level Eight (High Chaparral x Sky Queen), Spooky Wooky (High Chaparral x Sunday’s Choice), No Complaints (Dundeel x Savannah’s Choice), Fabricator (Bernardini x Savannah’s Choice), Baabulu (Anabaa x Sky Queen), Temperate (High Chaparral x Sky Queen), Shirazzle (Al Maher x Nepean Spark), Tiomo (Uncle Mo x Sundays Choice), Overshare – sold at 2016 Inglis Easter, standing his first season in 2018 at Spendthrift, Kawakini – sold at 2018 Inglis Classic, has since earnt $238,355 for her new owners and Australiano (All American x Fuller Promise) recently trialled well.
Metal Bender (Danasinga)
David worked a long week at Nepean Engineering but he’d always find time when he got home to check his horses every afternoon, and work the farms in The Oaks, Mudgee and Tea Gardens on weekends. He never stopped working and never sat down. His father was just as passionate about racing but only had moderate success. As a family he always enjoyed occasions going to the races and had great friendships with such trainers as John Size, Jack Denham, Chris Waller, Peter Snowden, Jason Coyle, John Hawkes, Donna Grisedale, Gavin Groth. David’s wife of 48 years Lyndall Fuller will carry on breeding and racing with the family in David’s honour.
