PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the latest edition of the Breeders Update. With the breeding season only days away and already a significant number of foals on the ground, an ongoing concern for all breeders is the continuation of the very dry conditions, with the availability of quality hay and grain difficult to secure and very expensive. These conditions are putting undeniable pressure on all livestock producers and many thoroughbred owner breeders are feeling overwhelmed with the extra costs of production. We can only hope for a turnaround this Spring, fortunately the South of the state along with Victoria and parts of the cropping belt in South and Western Australia are experiencing good winter rains which should ensure significant hay and grain production later in the Spring. Over the past few months TBNSW has been responsible for hosting and coordinating several informative seminars for thoroughbred enthusiasts. These seminars have been held in Sydney, Scone and Wagga Wagga and varied from all aspects of breeding, with an emphasis on the recent Hendra outbreak, to stud secretary information and pedigree workshops. Our thanks to our E.O. Julianne along with a vast array of knowledgeable presenters for making all of our seminars such a success and we look forward to a broad range of informative sessions next year. For more information a summary of the seminars held has been included in this edition. TBNSW will hold their 2018-19 awards presentation in conjunction with the National Jockeys Trust on Saturday 21st September at the Australian Turf Club Directors luncheon at Royal Randwick. It promises to be a great day of entertainment and GR 1 racing and discounted tickets are available for TBNSW members, further details included on page14. Please contact our EO Julianne Christopher for further information about the event or membership. On behalf of the TBNSW Board, I would like to wish our members a successful upcoming breeding season and hope that the Spring can offer some much-needed rain. Regards Mr Stuart Lamont President

TIMEFORM REVIEW

of the 2019 winter carnivals in Queensland By Les Young, photos courtesy of Martin King Sportpix

(Street Cry) (Timeform 119) who went on to record a decisive victory in the BRC Stradbroke Handicap (Gr. 1, 1400m) on June 8. Early in the carnival on April 27 four-yearold mare I Am Excited (Snitzel) upset hot favourite Redzel (Snitzel) and Jonker (Spirit of Boom) in the BRC Victory Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at weight-for-age but after the race Redzel was found to have a problem and was immediately spelled to prepare for The Everest, seeking a third successive success in this rich race. Tough Victorian-trained mare Kenedna (Not a Single Doubt) added to her earlier achievements in southern states during the Queensland carnival by taking the BRC Savatiano (Street Cry x Retsina)

Queensland’s extended Winter Racing Carnival rounds out the Australian season with a number of feature events for two-yearolds, three-year-olds, sprinters and middle distance performers. First of the big sprints was the time-honoured Doomben 10,000 (Gr.1, 1200m) at weight-for-age in which New Zealand-trained (The) Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) (Timeform 118) followed up from the good form he had shown in Queensland a year earlier to relegate Godolphin’s perennial bridesmaid Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) (Timeform 123).Winning time was a fast 1:08.97. (The) Bostonian , whose sire is now standing in Western Australia, quickly franked this form with an even more stylish victory in the BRC Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr. 1, 1300m), another weight-for-age test run at Eagle Farm on May 25. On that occasion he defeated Princess Posh (Canford Cliffs) and Godolphin’s gelding Trekking

Pretty In Pink (Sebring x Total Attraction)

Doomben Cup (Gr. 1, 2000m) at weight-forage on May 18 defeating Gold Coast A.D. Hollindale Cup (Gr. 2, 1800m) winner Life Less Ordinary (Thewayyouare). This halfsister to Queensland sire Spill The Beans (Snitzel) soon after added the weight-forage P.J. O’Shea Stakes (Gr. 2, 2200m) to her tally to take her earnings well past the $2 million mark. Kenedna’s sire Not a Single Doubt enjoyed a vintage season in 2018/19 and had another important winner in May when his daughter Qafila easily beat the males in the SAJC South Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m)

Invincibella (I Am Invincible x Abscond)

Segenhoe Thoroughbreds’ talented threeyear-old filly Pretty in Pink (Sebring) had a well deserved win against older rivals in the BRC Moreton Cup (Gr. 2, 1200m) at weightfor-age at Doomben on June 1 and more important events may not be beyond her during the spring. Timeform Review

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2019

There are several nice races for fillies and mares over the Queensland Winter Carnival and one notable early performance came from Godolphin’s Savatiano (Street Cry) on May 25 in easily defeating stakes winners Quilista (Scandal Keep) and Eckstein (I Am Invincible) in a competitive Glenlogan Park Stud Stakes (Gr. 3, 1300m) at Eagle Farm. Savatiano subsequently finished third behind the consistent five-year-old Invincibella (I Am Invincible) and Pohutukawa (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr. 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 22. This was Invincibella’s 11th and most important of her five black type victories which have earned for her syndicate of owners $ 2.46 million and it also provided a great result for her breeder GT Thoroughbreds. Before the Tiara, Invincibella had also taken the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock x Lady Paget)

Another Queensland feature race for fillies and mares was the Gai Waterhouse Classic (Listed, 1350m) on June 15, appropriately won by the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott-trained Ready To Prophet , bred by Torryburn Stud and a daughter of the prolific NSW sire Smart Missile who now stands at Twin Hills Stud, Cootamundra. A few other Queensland results worthy of mention were the victory of imported Sixties Groove (Sixties Icon) in the BRC Brisbane Cup (Gr. 2,2400 m), three-year-old gelding Vow and Declare (Declaration of War) beating older horses in the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr. 3, 3000m) and improving sprinter Brave Song’s (Your Song) powerful finish to take out the W.J. Healy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) on June 22. Bred by Yarraman Park Stud and raced by a Triple Crown syndicate, Brave Song is a grandson of the outstanding filly Bravery (Zephyr Zip), an important producer. He looks likely to win other good races during the spring.

Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt x Miss Dodwell)

After the main features in Brisbane concluded Queensland interest centered on Ipswich for the Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) which was taken out by Bergerac (Drumbeats) and the Eye Liner Stakes (Listed, 1350m) which went to the well performed Western Australian gelding Man Booker (Discorsi). Following this meeting Caloundra, north of Brisbane, held the spotlight to stage the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m) and the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m). Handy five-year-old mare River Racer (Hidden Dragon) took out the Glasshouse Handicap while New Zealandtrained mare Igraine (Galileo) relished the heavy track to score an impressive win in the Caloundra Cup. At the very end of the Queensland Winter Carnival a competitive field of stayers contested the Queensland Cup (Listed, 3200m) with victory going to the import Azuro (Myboycharlie), previously winner in Sydney of the ATC Stayers’ Cup (3200m) on June 29 but while this fiveyear-old gelding stays well his form looks below what is needed to win a Melbourne Cup.

Gem Song (Your Song x Beautiful Gem)

Three-year-olds There are several key events for three-year-olds leading up to the Group 1 Queensland Oaks on June 1 and the Group 1 Queensland Derby on June 8. The Roses (Gr. 2, 2000m) at Doomben on May 18 resulted in a narrow victory for Etana (Shamus Award) over Aliferous (Hinchinbrook) but neither filly was competitive in the Queensland Oaks (Gr. 1, 2200m) at Doomben in which the late Paul Makin’s superbly bred Winning Ways (Declaration of War – Skip Along, by Galileo) lived up to her name by taking this classic. Gooree Park Stud’s talented colt Gem Song (Your Song) scored impressively in the Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3,1600m) at Eagle Farm on April 27 but subsequently was a little disappointing when third to the talented older performers Archedemus (Lope de Vega) and Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) in the BRC Members’ Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben on May 11 and was not seen again at the Brisbane carnival. Sydney-trained gelding Military Zone (Epaulette), fresh from his success in the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr. 3, 1400m), added to his growing reputation in taking out the Fred Best Classic (Gr. 3, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 25, defeating Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince) who later franked the form with a strong win in the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr. 3, 1600m) on June 29. Both Military Zone and Baccarat Baby should add to their successes in the spring while Baccarat Baby’s consistent Vinery Stud sire Casino Prince (Flying Spur) was also in the spotlight at the Queensland Winter

Carnival as the sire of Premier’s Cup (Gr. 3, 2200m) winner The Candy Man, a grey gelding which built up something of a cult following with a string of wins leading up to his stakes success. Trainer Bjorn Baker sent out the gelding Fun Fact (The Factor) for a comfortable win in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr. 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on May 25. After several years the Queensland Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) returned to its traditional home of Eagle Farm in 2019 with victory going to interstate raider Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), a gelding out of a daughter of the brilliant General Nediym.Previously third in the South Australian Derby, Mr Quickie has now won nine races and $ 939.700 so may crack the $1 million earnings mark during the spring. Also run on Queensland Derby day was the Queensland Guineas (Gr. 2, 1600m) which saw trainer Chris Waller’s rising star Kolding (Ocean Park) beat Baccarat Baby and Pohutukawa, form which should stand up in the spring. Another good race contested on June 8 was the Daybreak Lover Plate (Listed, 1200m) for three-yearolds which fell to the Snowden-trained colt Signore Fox (Exceed and Excel).

Military Zone (Epaulette x Loading Zone)

Two-year-olds The Brisbane Turf Club each year has the honour of staging the season’s final Group 1 for two-year-olds, the J.J. Atkins Plate (Gr. 1, 1600m), with the winner more often than not going on to star status as did last year’s victor The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice). This year’s renewal looked a quality event with Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock) powering home late to down Kubrick (Shooting To Win) with Reloaded (Snitzel) filling third place. In winning, the tall and attractive Prince Fawaz became his sire’s 37th Group 1 winner and 147th individual stakes winner worldwide so he is now a much sought after stallion prospect but only after he completes a spring campaign with likely early targets races like the Golden Rose (Gr. 1, 1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m).

Strasbourg (I Am Invincible x Danish Spy)

Rising Sydney trainer Mark Newnham sent out the winners of both feature races for two-year-olds at Doomben on June 6, taking the Oxlade Stakes (formerly the Hampden Stakes) (Listed, 1200m) with the gelding Diamond Tiara (Dawn Approach) and The Phoenix Stakes (Listed, 1630m), a new set weight test, with promising gelding Shadow Hero (Pierro – Sookie, by Casino Prince). The all-conquering Godolphin team won the last of the Queensland winter features for two-year-olds when the James Cummingstrained gelding Kordia (Epaulette) was successful in the Winning Edge Stakes (Tattersall’s 2YO Stakes) at Eagle Farm on June 22.

A number of other feature two-year-old events were staged by the Brisbane Turf Club from late April starting with the Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1000m), a set weight test won by the gelding Jagged Edge, by boom first season sire Better Than Ready (More Than Ready). Dubious (Not a Single Doubt), the busiest and most travelled of Australia’s juveniles of the 2018/19 season, came to Doomben on May 11 to beat Strasbourg (I Am Invincible) and Czarson (Stratum) in the set weight Champagne Classic (Gr. 2, 1200m) but Strasbourg quickly made up for his loss by defeating Accession (Brazen Beau) in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) although he was to finish well back in the J.J. Atkins at his final winter start. Local filly Perudo (Spirit of Boom) captured the Bill Carter Stakes (Listed, 1200m), formerly known as the Lancaster Stakes on May 18. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2019

SNITZEL WINS THIRD STRAIGHT SIRES’ TITLE By Les Young

Snitzel

Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) led an army of NSW-based sires to dominate Australian breeding in the 2018/19 racing season which closed on July 31.

With progeny earnings of more than $24.26 million Snitzel won his third straight Australian sires’ title with his nearest rival I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) having a record 184 winners – four more than Snitzel – for earnings of $17.75 million and winners of 301 races. Snitzel’s biggest earner was Redzel, winner of The Everest, with prizemoney of $6,833,250 during the season, enabling him to shade I Am Invincible for championship honours to join the illustrious quartet of Star Kingdom (Stardust), Bletchingly (Biscay), Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) and Danehill (Danzig) as the only stallions in the past 60 years to win three consecutive Australian General Sires’ titles. Runner up I Am Invincible, also second to Snitzel in the 2017/18 season,in the past season had a record 28 individual stakes winners of 40 black type races with the mare Invincibella (earned $1,324,775) his biggest single contributor. Previously the great Danehill and Snitzel shared the record with 26 stakes winners in a single season. Now Australia’s most expensive sire at his 2019 fee of $247,500, Yarraman Park Stud’s I Am Invincible had a spectacular season with his two-year-olds and for the first time in 2018/19 he headed the list as leading sire in that category. He had 27 winners, eight of them stakes winners, of 36 races to finish ahead of Snitzel, Exceed and Excel and Sidestep, a Darley-owned son of Exceed and Excel who was champion first season sire courtesy of his Golden Slipper -winning daughter Kiamichi.

Snitzel Wins Third Straight Sires’ Title

I Am Invincible

Deep Field

Snitzel had 23 juvenile winners during the season, a number equalled by first crop sire Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) while among other new sires to impress with their first runners were NSW-based Deep Field (Northern Meteor) with 21 winners including two stakes winners, Coolmore’s Rubick (Encosta de Lago) with 15 winners headed by stakes winner Yes Yes Yes, Darley’s Shooting To Win, a brother to Deep Field who supplied 12 winners, most notable of them Kubrick. Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), Wandjina (Snitzel), Dissident (Sebring) and Hallowed Crown (Street Sense) were other first crop stallions with runners of promise last season . Of the top 20 sires in Australia in 2018/19, 19 of them stand or did stand in NSW, others being deceased Street Cry (third), Fastnet Rock (fourth), Not a Single Doubt (fifth), Sebring (sixth), High Chaparral (eighth), Redoute’s Choice (ninth), Pierro (10th), Lope de Vega (11th), Lonhro (12th), Smart Missile (13th), Exceed and Excel (14th), So You Think (15th). Teofilo (16th), Zoustar (17th and the leading second season sire), Nicconi (18th), Star Witness (19th) and All Too Hard (20th). Not only did Arrowfield sire Snitzel become Australia’s champion sire of winners in 2018/19 but also in another triumph for Arrowfield, Snitzel’s father Redoute’s Choice, himself a three time champion sire of winners, narrowly dethroned Encosta de Lago (Fairy King) in 2018/19 to become Australia’s champion broodmare sire for the first time.

Rubick

Redoute’s Choice died earlier this year and his maternal grandsire title was well deserved as his daughters produced 259 winners of 455 races for record earnings of $23,239,217.These included 19 individual stakes winners, among them Ace High, Amphitrite ,Arcadia Queen, Extra Brut and Trekking, of 33 black type races, a testament to the quality of their stock. Other maternal grandsires in the top 10 in 2018/19 were Flying Spur (third), Zabeel (fourth), More Than Ready (fifth), Galileo (sixth), Lonhro (seventh), Fastnet Rock (eighth), Anabaa (ninth) and Danehill (10th). To return to Snitzel in closing, career statistics from his Southern Hemisphere seasons are remarkable to date resulting in 675 winners giving the high winners-torunners percentage of 73.7. His 89 stakes winners include 13 Group 1 winners and have given him just under 10 per cent stakes winnersto-runners, a figure rarely matched by any of the great sires of the world. Prizemoney earned by Snitzel’s progeny has now reached $126.1 million which averages out to $138,831 per runner. If you can’t afford to breed to Snitzel a number of his best racing sons are available in NSW this season, among them Invader (at Aquis), Russian Revolution (Newgate Farm), newcomer Showtime (Arrowfield),Sizzling (Newgate Farm), newcomer Trapeze Artist (Widden Stud) and Wandjina (Newgate Farm).

Encosta de Lago had captured this title in each of the three previous seasons.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2019

SUCCESSFUL SEMINAR SEASON IN NSW

DEVELOPING BREEDERS’ KNOWLEDGE One of the aims of Thoroughbred Breeders NSW board is to provide and make available to members information on all aspects of thoroughbred breeding to expand their knowledge and understanding of our industry. The annual Wagga Wagga Breeders’ Seminar gathered 46 attendees who enjoyed a tremendous day of informative presentations and extensive interaction with passionate and most generous Veterinarians from Charles Sturt University, who gave their time to share their expertise and knowledge.

GI Goldmine Pedigree Worksop

Informative events are held annually for members across the state. Over the past 2 months TBNSW hosted and co-ordinated several events all of which were very well attended and covered a variety of important topics for breeders to stay updated and prepare for the upcoming breeding season. Last year we partnered with G1 Goldmine software gaining further benefits for our members, such as a free 20/20 Mare Match Report and invitations to pedigree software education workshops. Three workshops were hosted in various locations; Inglis Riverside Broodmare Sale, Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre Scone and Sydney. The eager attendees gained insightful analytical pedigree knowledge in the lead up to the breeding season, along with a complimentary G1 subscription and TBNSW members received 2 free mare reports. An isolated Hendra Virus case confirmed in the north of the Upper Hunter Valley sparked Veterinarians and Stud farms in the area to take immediate informed action to ensure the safety and security of their staff and livestock on their properties. A conclusive information session was then held at the Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre, breeders heard crucial bio-security information from NSW Regional Local Lands Services District Veterinarian Jane Bennett, followed by practical vaccination advice from the major Veterinary practices in the region. Thank you to all the Veterinarians for their insightful forum and to those that attended the evening.

Wagga Wagga Breeders’ Seminar

Topics covered; periodontal disease in the broodmare, practical evidence-based parasite control, preparation and dealing with a foaling mare, breeding associated treatments of broodmares, the sick neonatal foal - how to optimise survival, dealing with the bent legged foal, yearling dynamic endoscopy, welfare friendly weaning, sedation of stud animals and an open forum on Hendra Virus with six veterinarians. We are extremely grateful to all the presenters, especially Allan Gunn who coordinates the speakers and the program, Penny Lamont for her assistance and to those in attendance from the 3 eastern states, QLD, NSW and Victoria.

Stud Secretary Seminar Developing Breeders’ Knowledge

WWW.TBNSW.COM.AU Developments and updates relating to stud office administration called for a Stud Secretary seminar and luncheon, with over 40 participants registered only 36 successfully escaped the office for the day. A mixed group of participants from the Hunter Valley and broader NSW along with 3 travelled from Victoria.

Lecture notes & Stud Office Handbook

The speakers presented content covering new and revised practical information on employment law and guidelines, debt recovery and PPSR, superannuation - making life easier for payroll staff, Ardex hints and tips, upcoming changes to the online Stud Book and development of Myhorseracing portal, navigating the Thoroughworks sales software platform and reports, stud farm Veterinary repro basics - lab submissions, reading blood results, stallion bookings, fertility analysis, swabs, microchipping, understanding the meaning of treatments, work health and safety policies, vaccination routines and registers, industry relevant courses available at TAFE and traineeship procedures, the importance of staff development for building productive teams and management for staff retention. All expressed feedback as a wonderful wide-ranging, well-informed day and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to network. Our appreciation of thanks goes to the high-quality speakers, that gave their time on the day and for providing practical reference material for the updated Stud Office handbook. muscle growth, stallion fertility science updates, plump pregnancies and laminitic mares, Agrifutures stallion fertility project update, bio-security equine infection control and PPE. We are privileged to have such worldly experienced, accredited professionals available to us each year, we are all truly grateful for their service and dedication to the thoroughbred industry.

Scone Breeders’ Seminar

The Hunter Valley Equine Research centre has been a hive of activity during the newly dubbed ‘Seminar Season’ providing a practical regional facility for industry educational events, including the ever-popular Scone Breeders’ Seminar, that attracted a record breaking 58 in attendance. With a focus on drought, fertility and health our guest speakers included agronomist Ross Watson who gave us an awakening indication of where this 1 in 120 year wide spread drought is heading and practical measures to prepare for climate management. Insightful Veterinarian presentations covered; fertility and mare repro nutrition, changes in yearling feeding for better

With positive feedback being received from all events, many commenting on thoroughly enjoying the day, learning valuable and essential new information. We’re looking forward to providing our members with a variety of new content for next year. Lastly, a big thank you to our Executive Officer Julianne Christopher for her calm synchronisation and management of our events. To obtain further information about event content provided above or from any previous year’s, such as; lecturers notes, stud office handbooks or industry links, please contact our office for available resources to members. Project spotlight: Developing a novel diagnostic test for early pregnancy

Project spotlight: Coxiella burnetii infection in association with equine abortion

Project ID: PRJ-011748

Project ID: PRJ-011758

Principal investigator: Aleona Swegen

Principal investigator: Joanne Devlin

Research Organisation: The University of Newcastle

Research Organisation: The University of Melbourne

This recently contracted project seeks to enhance breeding efficiency in the thoroughbred industry through the development of a novel method for the detection and monitoring of early pregnancy.

This project aims to increase the industries understanding of Q Fever (coxiella burnetti infestion) for equine health (specifically its association with equine abortion) and any related risks to human health in Australia. The research team will genetically characterise the Q fever detected in 16 historical cases of equine abortion from NSW and VIC and compare these characteristics with those from cases of Q fever in humans and other species. They will also consider the load of Q fever in the historical cases to assess the likely level of environmental contamination, and the risk of infection to other horses and humans, after an abortion event.

In this project, the research team will use state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technology to compare blood protein and lipid (fat) profiles of early pregnant and non-pregnant mares, and world-first strategies to investigate the unique biological features of equine pregnancy. This will identify compounds that could serve as biomarkers of an early pregnancy, and a compromised early pregnancy or poor embryo health at time points prior to conventional diagnosis by ultrasound (ie earlier than day 14 after ovulation). The end goal being to develop a quick, simple and accurate on-farm blood test for early pregnancy and enhanced understanding of the possible causes for early embryo loss.

The findings from this research will be used to help inform the development of appropriate control measures, this may include appropriate biosecurity and infection control, and could include Q Fever vaccination for staff exposed to high risk material.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter / Spring 2019

MAGIC ALBERT PASSES AGED 21

MAGIC ALBERT LIVED HIS LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Speed was a major factor for Magic Albert as a racehorse and a trait he passed on to his progeny during a remarkable stud career spanning 17 seasons.

Travelling almost as quick was the news of his sudden passing at Kooringal Stud on August 2 – the day after his 21st birthday. “Magic Albert was an amazing horse and will be sadly missed,” Kooringal Stud’s Stuart Lamont said. “He did a marvellous job both on the track and as a sire. “His ability to churn out winner after winner never ceased to amaze. Fittingly, he had three winners from his eight runners the day after his death. “He’d been in great health so to lose him so suddenly was a shock to us all at Kooringal.” Magic Albert was a classy two-year-old who followed successive wins over sprint trips at Rosehill with a third to Excellerator in the 2001 Magic Millions at the Gold Coast. The son of Zeditave and Sally Lou won twice again as a juvenile before embarking on an ambitious three-year-old campaign. Magic Albert kept stepping up to the mark, winning the Group 2 Peter Pan Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill and the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle.

Magic Albert

The chestnut made only four more appearances to boast a record of seven wins and two placings from his 13 starts and more than $471,000 in prizemoney. While a Group 1 win eluded Magic Albert, he achieved the ultimate feat five times over as a sire. Magic Albert started his stud career in 2002 at Yarraman Park in the Hunter Valley where he left the outstanding performers Albert The Fat (BTC Cup and Emirates Stakes) and Ilovethiscity (Randwick Guineas). Transferring to Kooringal Stud in 2016, Magic Albert achieved further success in the highest company with Magic Cape (New Zealand Guineas) and Fighting Warrior (Greyville Golden Horseshoe). Magic Albert added another name to his illustrious list of Group 1 performers when Aramco claimed the $800,000 Lion City Cup in Singapore in May. More than 600 winners for Magic Albert were highlighted by 24 at stakes level and in excess of $49 million in prizemoney. “Magic Albert was a stalwart of Australian breeding for many years and it was a privilege to have him as part of the team at Kooringal,” Stuart said.
