page contents Timeform (continued) Review
Timeform Review of the Melbourne and Sydney 2018 Autumn Carnivals By Alex Steedman and Gary Crispe, photos courtesy of Sportpix.
Racing and Sports’ Timeform experts recap the key performances through the 2018 autumn carnivals. The evidence shows that at the age of six Winx remains as good as she has ever been. Race standardisation analysis points to Winx having achieved a rating within a tight range of 128-133, as did the ratings profiles of the other runners going into the race and where they finished - Humidor running well below form, Happy Clapper just below (typical for him at 2000m) and Gailo Chop running exactly to form. A figure of 134, on the high-side of that range, was arrived at by factoring in sectional times. The evidence shows that at the age of six Winx remains as good as she has ever been.
Five Year Olds & Upwards Older horses featured prominently throughout the autumn and their charge was spearheaded by none other than champion mare Winx who graced the turf on three occasions.
It was an electrifying way to bring up a 25th straight success, coming from last at the 800m to round up a good quality 2000m field and win comfortably by almost four lengths.
Winx returned for an autumn campaign after a spring preparation where while she remained unbeaten and claimed a third straight Cox Plate, gave her adoring fans a host of nervous moments with a number of narrow victories.
Winx was clearly facing a quality field, with Doncaster Mile and Epsom Handicap winner Happy Clapper engaged along with multiple Group 1 winner Humidor – both possessing a Timeform rating of 129.
Followers of the Chris Wallertrained mare could watch the mare stress free this autumn as she strung together three clinical successes culminating in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 14.
In addition, multiple group one winner Gailo Chop (125) and former Japanese galloper Ambitious (122) provided further depth.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018
A steady tempo in the race meant that the overall time was only fair but it only adds merit to the performance of Winx with the wide margins on the line even more impressive in that scenario. From the 800m mark Winx’s finishing speed was 109.3%. An overall time rating of ~104 can be considered to be ~132 based on that closing speed. That, somewhat remarkably, equals her best overall timefigure to date, achieved when winning the 2016 Cox Plate. One of Australia’s leading weightfor-age features each season, Winx has now won back to back renewals of the event, the first horse to achieve the feat since Grand Armee in 2004/05.
Careful analysis shows that Winx matched her previous best Timeform rating of 134.

Timeform Review
Despite giving most of his rivals a sizable weight advantage in the Doncaster, Happy Clapper was still a class above in the prestigious mile event. The Pat Webster-trained gelding ran to a Timeform rating of 129, the highest ever winning figure of a Doncaster Mile. Gailo Chop ran second to Winx in the Queen Elizabeth. Prior to that however, the well-travelled import won three of his first four autumn runs including the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 24. It was a cakewalk for the Darren Weir-trained runner who put three lengths on nearest rival Single Gaze. The win returned Gailo Chop a Timeform rating of 125, a new master Timeform rating for the son of Deportivo and the highest winning figure of a Ranvet Stakes since Tie The Knot claimed the 2000 renewal. Gailo Chop is joined by his stablemate Brave Smash as another older horse to perform admirably at the top level this autumn. The Tosen Phantom stallion ran to a Timeform rating of 124 when taking out the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 24.
Happy Clapper (Teofilo x Busking)
With her latest Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory being given a Timeform rating of 134, she now boasts the highest winning figure of the event having eclipsed Might And Power’s emphatic 1998 Queen Elizabeth success by one pound. A tilt at a record breaking fourth straight Cox Plate win beckons Winx this spring after connections announced during her autumn campaign they would not travel the rising seven-year-old to the UK for Royal Ascot. Winx’s dominance looks all that more impressive after Happy Clapper came out and claimed two Group 1s this autumn. The Pat Webster-trained gelding has clashed with Winx eight times now and has placed behind the champion mare on four occasions. Between defeats at the hands of Winx in the Queen Elizabeth and George Ryder Stakes, Happy Clapper claimed both the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on March 10 and the Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 7.
6
Also drawing attention for a winning display assessed at 124 was 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin who proved a superior stayer in claiming the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill on March 31. Redkirk Warrior can boast producing the best sprint performance this autumn after taking out the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10. As well as it being the pick of the sprint performances, Redkirk Warrior became the first horse since Razor Sharp in 1982/83 to claim consecutive renewals of the Newmarket Handicap. The UK import has now built an imposing record down the Flemington straight, amassing four wins from five starts. Following his second straight Newmarket victory, connections announced Redkirk Warrior would head to Royal Ascot in June for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m).
Four Year Olds Four-year-olds were outshone by their more seasoned counterparts during the autumn however there was still one performance worth mentioning amongst the crop.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018
Timeform Review (continued)
Three Year Olds While last season’s three-year-old crop was decimated by retirements, this season’s best three-year-olds are for the most part expected to race on next season. This season, 11 three-year-olds (all colts) have run to Timeform ratings of 120 and higher. The only one who is confirmed to retire from racing at the end of the season to commence stud duties is Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Merchant Navy. Russian Revolution (Snitzel x Ballet D’Armour)
Russian Revolution made a winning cameo appearance this autumn when taking out the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 24. A dual Group 1 winner having claimed the 2017 Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill as a three-year-old, Russian Revolution’s retirement was announced following the Oakleigh Plate. With connections of the opinion their Snitzel colt had ‘nothing left to prove’, Russian Revolution will stand his first season at stud this spring with Newgate Farm.
Based on the strength of threeyear-old performances witness this autumn, it bodes well for the 2018/19 racing season.
Redzel (Snitzel x Millrich)
Trapeze Artist can boast being the highest rated three-year-old of the season and came away from the autumn boasting the TJ Smith Stakes – All Aged Stakes double.
Settled just off the pace set by Redzel, the son of Snitzel was too strong over the closing stages for the consistent sprinter and drew clear for a two-length success with a further two lengths back to In Her Time form third.
The Gerald Ryan-trained colt stepped up to open weight-forage sprints after being freshened following a third in the Randwick Guineas (1600m). In theory, successfully dropping a horse back from the Randwick Mile to win a TJ Smith Stakes isn’t easy.
Gerald Ryan and Trapeze Artist however made it look clinical.
The colt produced a Timeform rating of 126 for the victory and become the first three-year-old to win a TJ Smith Stakes since Melito (also trained by Gerald Ryan) in 2010.
It was the only Group 1 victory recorded by a four-year-old this autumn with a majority of the crop’s top line colts having been retired from racing for stud duties last season. Colts were clearly the dominant sex of this crop, evidenced by the fact they made up ten of the 11 top rated three-year-olds from last season. Only NZ gelding Gingernuts broke up this dominance of colts as the fifth highest rated three-year-old last season. Just four of those colts went on to race this season, Impending, Prized Icon, Russian Revolution and Seaburge. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018
Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock x Legally Bay) 7
Timeform Review (continued)
Trapeze Artist (Snitzel x Domesday)
Two weeks later Trapeze Artist became the first three-year-old in history to claim the TJ Smith Stakes - All Aged Stakes double with a victory assessed at 124. Prior to Trapeze Artist, the flashy Bentley Biscuit was the last horse to claim the double back in 2007. Following his All Aged Stakes win, it was announced Trapeze Artist would race on as a four-year-old. Aquis Farm was quick to react, securing the colt to run in its slot for The Everest at Randwick on October 14. Before Trapeze Artist stole the show, Kementari was the boom colt of the autumn, dominating the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes
Kementari (Lohnro x Yavanna)
(1200m), the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and the Randwick Guineas (1600m). The Lonhro colt won the Randwick Guineas with an effort awarded a Timeform rating of 125p. D’Argento profiles as the crop’s best middle-distance horse. Despite not enjoying a great deal of luck through his autumn campaign, the So You Think colt managed to come away from it with a Group 1 victory, dominating the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 24. Given a Timeform rating of 120p for the run, D’Argento became just the second Australian-bred 3YO to win the Rosehill Guineas this decade with Laser Hawk in 2012 the other. While the Australian Derby is generally the traditional campaign path for a Rosehill Guineas winner, trainer Chris Waller instead elected to drop the impressive grey back to 1600m for the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on April 7. D’Argento produced one of the eye-catching runs of the carnival in the Doncaster. Snagged back to last, the Star Thoroughbreds-raced colt spotted his rivals a sizable head start into the straight before powering home late. The performance left no doubt D’Argento will successfully make the
D’Argento (So You Think x Fullazz) 8
transition to weight-for-age next season. Levendi and Ace High provided one of the more enthralling finishes of the carnival when contesting the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 7. It was the Peter Gelagotis-trained Levendi who got the upper hand late and while only a nose split the pair, they put a further six lengths back to Tangled in third. It is the second year running a horse has claimed the Tulloch Stakes – Australian Derby double with Jon Snow achieving the feat in 2017. The Rosehill Guineas is generally considered the dominant form line brought into the Derby each year. That perception may have to change after it was outshone by the Tulloch Stakes form line for the second straight year. The Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 3 saw an impressive pair of colts in Grunt and Peaceful State run the quinella. Grunt ran to a Timeform rating of 122 while Peaceful State was awarded a Timeform rating of 120 for his half length defeat. The Australian Guineas has been a very consistent race from a ratings perspective but two horses running to 120 or better has only happened six times in it’s 33 years. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018
Timeform Review (continued)
Levendi and Ace High nose it to the post
They were Military Plume and Vo Rogue (1987), Mahogany and Pride Of Rancho (1994), Dignity Dancer and Mossman (1999), Pins and Freemason (2000), Reset and Starcraft (2004) and Miss Finland and Casino Prince (2007). All signs point to it being a strong renewal of the Australian Guineas and already Peaceful State, Levendi, Cliff’s Edge and Villermont have since gone on to claim Group successes. Among the three-year-old fillies Shoals (Fastnet Rock) won the Group 1 Surround Stakes in Sydney before adding another Group 1, the Robert Sangster Stakes, in Adelaide while Godolphin’s Alizee (Sepoy) impressed in taking the Group 1 Coolmore Legacy Queen of the Turf Stakes at Randwick. Over a distance Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) was a stylish winner of the Group 1ATC Australian Oaks in which she defeated Hiyaam (High Chaparral), earlier an all-theway winner of the Group 1 ATC Vinery Stud Stakes.
Shoals (Fastnet Rock x The Broken Shore)
Two Year Olds For the second time in five years, Team Hawkes claimed the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m). After winning with the Emirates Park-raced Mossfun in 2014, they combined with the respected breeding operation once again in 2018 with another filly, Estijaab. A $1.7million purchase as a yearling, expectations were high for the daughter of Snitzel during her maiden prep. Estijaab didn’t disappoint, claiming the Reisling StakesGolden Slipper double. Under the guidance of Brenton Avdulla in the Golden Slipper, Estijaab was able to cross and dictate from a wide barrier. Usually a high pressure race, the pair enjoyed a number of cheap mid sectionals which meant there was plenty in the tank late to hold off late challengers Oohood and Sunlight. She produced a Timeform rating of 118 to win the Golden Slipper, a figure which is a shade on the low side for winning the world’s richest two-year-old race. Another talking point out of the race was the dominance of fillies in the Golden Slipper during the past five years.
Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock x Memories of You) NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018

page contents Timeform Review (continued)
Despite still being a maiden, Oohood is the third highest rated two-yearold this season for her closing second in the Golden Slipper. The Tony McEvoy-trained filly accumulated Group 1 placings in the Blue Diamond Stakes, the Golden Slipper and also the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 7 where she was sent out as favourite. It was the Sires’ Produce which delivered the biggest boilover of the carnival as the Ben Smith-trained El Dorado Dreaming won at 80-1. Oohood (I am Invincible x Bella Sunday)
Fresh off running second in a 1200m Maiden Plate at Newcastle, nobody expected the Ilovethiscity filly to improve so sharply. Running to 112+ in the Sires’, El Dorado Dreaming came out a fortnight later and proved it was no fluke, finishing a somewhat unlucky third in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 21 behind the Mick Pricetrained Seabrook.
Estijaab 2018 Golden Slipper winner
Others two-year-olds to perform particularly well through the autumn carnival include Sunlight (Silver Slipper), Performer (Canonbury Stakes) and Aylmerton (Todman Stakes).
Members of the fairer sex have now filled the Golden Slipper trifecta in three of the past five renewals. They achieved the feat in Mossfun’s 2014 Golden Slipper while She Will Reign led in a fillies trifecta last year. Estijaab running to 118 in the Golden Slipper means Written By can still boast being the highest rated twoyear-old of the crop for his Blue Diamond victory at Caulfield on February 24. The homebred colt provided jockey Jordan Childs with his first Group 1 victory and Grahame Begg his first top level success since stepping away from training in 2015 before relocating to Victoria. Written By then won the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 17 before a respectable fourth behind Estijaab contesting the Golden Slipper. Sunlight (Zoustar x Solar Charged) 10

New South Wales Breeders Thank’s The Inglis Family Thoroughbred Breeders New South Wales, on behalf of all breeders in NSW and throughout Australia, present a plaque to William Inglis and Son as a mark of our appreciation of the company, its directors and staff on the opening of Riverside stables in 2018. Riverside stables, is a magnificent modern facility to house and showcase our horses for sale and will benefit many generations of breeders into the future. The concept of having a sale ring within a five star hotel is truly revolutionary and Riverside will be a lasting tribute to the vision of the Inglis Company and represents an enormous investment not only in the future of Inglis, but also in the Australian thoroughbred industry.
Les Young with Arthur Inglis
VALE DON STOREY We were saddened greatly to learn of the death of TBNSW Life Member Don Storey after a long illness at the age of 86 on May 15. Don Storey served on the Board of TBNSW for more than 30 years, filling the role of Treasurer for much of that period. Founder of a still thriving legal practice at Parramatta, Don Storey rendered great service to TBNSW, his knowledge and experience as a successful small breeder combined with his legal expertise proving very valuable. Don and his vivacious late wife Val were popular regulars at Sydney race meetings for more than 40 years with Don also a long serving and much respected racing administrator as a Board member of the innovative Sydney Turf Club. While only a relatively small breeder, Don Storey achieved sustained success, first coming to prominence as an owner/breeder in the mid-1970s through the deeds of brilliant, multiple stakes-winning two-yearold filly Rainbeam (Vain), a descendant of the 1945 VRC Melbourne Cup winner Rainbird.

Don Storey
Don Storey later sold Rainbeam to fellow Sydney Turf Club director, the late Jim Fleming, who bred from her the high class performer Centaine (Century), who became a leading sire in New Zealand, but he retained other Rainbird descendants who produced for him in 1980 top two-year-old Been There (Boucher) and some years later in 2007 the outstanding sprinter Rain Affair (Commands), earner of more than $1.55 million racing in his famous black and gold colours. Life Membership presented to Mr Leslie Young The Thoroughbred Breeders NSW committee took Mr Les Young by surprise directly after the presentation to Inglis. Derby, Queensland Derby, Grand Prix Stakes), Colour Page (VATC Sandown Cup, VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, STC Rosehill Cup and Diamond Shower (VRC Oaks, Wakeful Stakes, AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes).
(L to R) Derek Field, Les Young, Peter Orton & Paddy Power
In the 1960s Sydney-born Les Young entered the NSW Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association seeking advice that in turn, half a century later he would be the one dispersing it. The now 74 year old has dedicated his life to the thoroughbred. In 2010, he was appointed acting executive officer of NSW Breeders, due to a sudden resignation of the previous executive officer, which soon became a 7 year stint until December 2017, when the office was relocated to Scone on the closure of Inglis Newmarket Sales complex at Randwick. In 1971 Les took over production of the thoroughbred section of Country Life newspaper, from Brian Russell. In the early 1970s he established a bloodstock agency, and in association with Peter Nicole, a luminary in breeding knowledge, and Winchcombe Carson, a Sydney based major wool broking and stock and station business, launched into the public horse selling business, concentrating on private sales, syndication of stallions and public sales of quarter horses before moving on to thoroughbreds. Initiating the Breeders’ Guide, a feature that ran in the Sportsman and writing for them for 38 years (1979-2017) a segment entitled Breeding World. In 1979, a partnership with Bob Lapointe, of Doncaster Bloodstock Services saw the securing of a long list of good horses including Emancipation 19 wins, six Gr.1), Magic Flute (eight wins included the AJC Doncaster, VATC 1000 Guineas), Handy Proverb (cost $7000, Victoria NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Autumn 2018
The Lapointe-Young association impact initially emerged when they went shopping with a modest budget at 1979 Adelaide yearling sale. Investing $41,000, they purchased five yearlings. Two were November Rain ($12,000, won VRC Oaks, AJC Oaks, QTC Queensland Oaks, AJC St Leger, VRC Wakeful Stakes) and Port Carling ($12,500, seven Sydney wins, AJC Summer Cup). Another, Easy Date, a $4500 Grand Chaudiere (CAN) filly, ran only three times, but showed ability with a provincial win at two. She was mated to Lunchtime for Bob Lapointe and Bob Logan, but much to their later regret was sold in foal at Scone for $5000. The foal became Snippets. Les handled the syndication of Golden Slipper winner Marscay for sire duties at Widden Stud for owners Geoff and Beryl White, purchasing Marscay’s Widden-bred AJC Australian Oaks winner and producer Circles of Gold for $50,000 for Frank Tagg. At Sydney Summer Yearling Sale, he spent $12,000 buying the late Ross Cribb a Blazing Saddles filly named of Heat of the Moment the Champion Australasian 3YO Filly 1985-86. Success from a small band of broodmares, besides Integra including among their progeny Integra’s Bletchingly half-brother Bletchencore (a Sydney sprinter and sire of winners to Gr.1), stakes winning Zephyr Zip siblings Zephyrz (won Magic Millions 2YO Classic) and Cloudlet (eight wins included four in Sydney and Gosford Slipper -Gr.2) and Sea Swell, winner of the Sandown Guineas Gr. 2. Long serving contributions to industry as a foundation member and vice president of NSW Racehorse Owners’ Association, seven years on RIPAC (Racing Industry Participants Advisory Committee) representing breeders, foundation member of Equine Advisory Committee for Federal Government’s Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation in equine research projects, and as a past president and life member of the Federation of Bloodstock Agents of Australia. Les has been a member of the NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Association for nearly 59 years and for his contribution to the Breeding Industry we are honoured to award Les Life Membership. 15

New residents for the Hunter Valley Equine Research Complex Racing Australia Equine Genetics Research Centre Officially Opened
Racing Australia Equine Genetics Researchers
The Racing Australia Equine Genetics Research Centre (EGRC) was officially opened on Monday 23 April 2018 by Russell Balding AO Deputy Chair Racing Australia & John Messara AM former Chair Racing Australia. Located within the Hunter Valley Equine Research Complex in Scone, beside the new home of NSW Breeders office and Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Office, Racing Australia now has a permanent presence in the heart of Australia’s leading Thoroughbred and Equine Breeding region.
The EGRC team combines experts in equine genetics research, technical scientific and diagnostic skills with a love for horses of all shapes, sizes and colours. With an equine geneticist on staff, Racing Australia will now be able to keep up with the latest cutting-edge developments in horse genetics.
“Through the establishment of this Genetics Research Centre here at Scone, Racing Australia is proud to be returning to regional Australia some of the support it has always given the Australian Thoroughbred industry”. said Russell Balding AO.
This Centre will also ensure Racing Australia also has the capability to perform its own research into genetic diseases in horses-of all breeds-and offer the findings to others working to improve equine health.
The Centre will undertake DNA typing of all Thoroughbred foals to confirm parentage and establish a unique pedigree that is accessible throughout its life. It will also provide services to 30 other horse breed societies across Australia. An estimated 20,000 tests will be analysed at the Centre each year. The gathering of over fifty guests from politics and the breeding industry were introduced to the EGRC team and toured the facility. 16
In 2017 Racing Australia participated in the International Horse STR DNA Typing Comparison Test and achieved rank 1 with 100% genotyping accuracy. Rank 1 is necessary to allow parentage verification of Thoroughbreds for the International Stud Book Committee. New Stallions for New South Wales
New Stallions for New South Wales CARAVAGGIO (USA) Grey horse, 2014
Standing at Coolmore Stud, Jerrys Plains
Fee: $33,000
Caravaggio (Timeform rating 123p at 2 yrs, 126 at 3 yrs) comes to Australia with the reputation of being the fastest horse ever in the stable of Ireland’s great trainer Aidan O’Brien. He was unbeaten in four starts as a two-year-old after taking a 1000m Maiden in Ireland then going on to victories in the Marble Hill Stakes (Listed, 1000m at Curragh), the stallion making Coventry Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Royal Ascot and the Curragh Phoenix Stakes (Gr.1,1200m) by four lengths. Caravaggio added three more stakes events to his record at three years in 2017, the highlight win coming in the Commonwealth Cup (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Royal Ascot defeating Harry Angel on whom Timeform bestowed the very high rating of 132. Apart from his speed and impressive record as a sprinter, Caravaggio is perhaps the best son of the sensational sire Scat Daddy, now dead. In his short stud career Scat Daddy has to date left 94 stakes winners including 24 Group One winners and while he raced on dirt his progeny have proved equally good on turf in Europe, one being No Nay Never who made his Australian debut at Coolmore last season. Mekko Hokte, the dam of Caravaggio, was a black type winner over 1300m as a two-year-old and is a daughter of top American galloper Holy Bull, a very useful sire.

CHURCHILL (IRE) Bay horse, 2014
Standing at Coolmore Stud, Jerrys Plains
Fee: $27,500
Churchill (Timeform 120p at 2 yrs, 126 at 3 yrs) seems to tick all the boxes identifying a future successful stallion as the champion twoyear-old of his year, a dual Guineas winner at three years, a striking individual and a horse of superb breeding top and bottom. With more speed than many of the progeny of his great sire Galileo, Churchill looks perfectly suited to Australian conditions and with the right mares could get outstanding two-year-olds and others able to win at 1600m and beyond in the classics. Churchill is one of the most precocious sons of Galileo, recording five feature wins as a two-year-old at 1400m, most important of them the Curragh National Stakes (Gr. 1) by more than four lengths and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. He then trained on at three years to take the Group One Guineas double in convincing style, the Two Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Newmarket from Group One winners Barney Roy and Al Wukair followed by the Irish Two Thousand Guineas in which he defeated the 2018 Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow. Some 11 sons of Galileo have so far sired Group One winners so Churchill has plenty to live up to but the excellence of his female pedigree equips him better than most to meet the challenge.

Churchill is a brother to Clemmie, rated the champion two-year-old filly in Europe in 2017, and is out of the speedy, stakes winning twoyear-old Meow, by the great American sire Storm Cat.
URBAN SEA ALLEGRETTA
More speed and early maturity is injected into Churchill’s pedigree by his second dam Airwave, champion British two-year-old of 2002 and later a top class older sprinter. Airwave bred five winners, three of them black type winners, Meow and the Galileo pair Aloof and Orator, three-parts relatives to Churchill.

HELLBENT Bay horse, 2012
Standing at Yarraman Park Stud, Scone
Fee: $27,500
Hellbent (Timeform rating 121) shapes as the logical successor to his outstanding sire I Am Invincible as he joins his father at Yarraman Park for the 2018 season. He was retired after an impressive success in the 2018 William Reid Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley , his first victory at the highest level. This well deserved win came after his second in the same event a year earlier and five other stakes placings including a third in the 2018 MRC Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m). Overall Hellbent raced 23 times for seven wins and seven placings to earn $901,450 in prizemoney. Hellbent’s sire I Am Invincible, now standing at a fee of $192,500 and booked out, has been a sensational stud success since his first crop began racing in the 2013/14 season and has an ever growing list of stakes winners. His Group One winners in addition to Hellbent are Brazen Beau, I Am a Star and Viddora while black type winners by the sire also include Eckstein, Houtzen, Illustrious Lad, Invincible Gem, Invincible Star, Look To The Stars, Most Important,Overshare, Paquirri, Santos,Super One, The Justice League and Voodoo Lad. Volkaspray, the dam of Hellbent, won twice in Sydney and has produced two other winners, one being Painte, three times successful in Sydney. Standing at Aquis/Emirates Park, Murrurundi
Fee: $27,500
Invader (Timeform 119) was Australia’s champion two-year-old colt of the 2016/17 season and was Australian Timeform’s highest ever rated juvenile colt. Highpoint of his brief racing career came in the 2017 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) in which he defeated a star studded lineup before finishing a good second in the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m). Earlier he had been runner up in the ATC Todman Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) and won a race in Sydney so he was an outstanding two-yearold as his earnings tally of $968,375 would suggest. Powerfully built, Invader is one of the best racing sons of his record breaking sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who is set this season to shatter his own earnings record to win his second straight Australian general sires’ title and is standing for a fee of $220,000 in 2018. Invader’s stakes winning dam Flame of Sydney, by twice champion sire and champion broodmare sire Encosta de Lago, has proved a splendid producer. Her three other winners are headed by Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas), winner in Australia of the MRC Zeditave Stakes (Gr. 3) and twice second in Group One events. Not Listenin’tome was later sent to Hong Kong where he won four more black type races and placed in seven other stakes events up to Group One level.

LORD OF THE SKY Bay horse, 2010
Standing at Kingstar Farm, Denman
Fee: $7,700
From the Danehill (USA) male line and carrying the blood of Bletchingly, Lord of the Sky was a tough and highly talented short course sprinter who did most of his racing in strong Melbourne company. He won three stakes events, the VRC Standish Handicap (Gr. 3, 1200m), the MRC Bletchingly Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) and the MRC Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr. 3,1100m). In total Lord of the Sky won seven races and was second on five occasions to earn $1,126,150 in prizemoney. Danerich, the sire of Lord of the Sky, was a stakes winner who has made the most of the opportunities given him at stud in Victoria and his other black type winners are Rich Charm, Richie’s Vibe, Didntcostalot, Heaven’s Riches, Classy Chloe, Flying Skipper and Streetcar Isabelle. Out of former top two-year-old Millrich, Danerich is a half-brother to ATC The Everest winner Redzel whose earnings are just short of $8.7 million. MERCHANT NAVY Bay horse, 2014

Merchant Navy’s twice champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) is having another excellent season in Australia, recently notching his 136th stakes winner worldwide and his 34th Group One winner when Unforgotten captured the 2018 ATC Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) in record time. A sprinting Group One winner for him is Coolmore’s new sire Merchant Navy, brilliant victor of last spring’s VRC Coolmore Stud (Ascot Vale) Stakes (Gr.1, 1200m) and more recently a close up and somewhat unlucky third against the best older sprinters in the VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr. 1, 1200m) Following that run Merchant Navy (current Timeform rating 126p) has been sent to Ireland’s great trainer Aidan O’Brien with the plan of racing at Royal Ascot in June before returning to Australia for his first stud season winning impressively Greenlands Stakes in Ireland in his lead up start. Also a stakes winner in Melbourne as a two-year-old, Merchant Navy has to date raced eight times over two seasons for five wins and two thirds to earn $939,850 in Australia. At two years Merchant Navy won the MRC H D F McNeil Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) but his class and ability really shone through in the Coolmore Stud Stakes when he produced a dramatic, power finish to win. The female half of Merchant Navy’s pedigree is as impressive as the male half as his dam Legally Bay is a brilliant, dual stakes winning daughter of Snippets and has also bred Merchant Navy’s stakes winning sister Jolie Bay.

PARIAH (AUS) Bay horse, 2014
Standing at Arrowfield Stud, Scone
Fee: $22,000
A Group winner as a debut 2YO, G1 placed in the Blue Diamond and one of the highest rated two-year-olds of his generation, Pariah returned with Group brilliance over 1100m at 3YO. The beautiful son of Redoute’s Choice joins the sire dynasty in 2018, alongside Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt. Pariah (Timeform rating 119) joins his illustrious father Redoute’s Choice and paternal half-brothers Snitzel, Not a Single Doubt and Scissor Kick at Arrowfield Stud this season and is among his father’s 157 black type winners. A $700,000 yearling, the good looking rising four-year-old proved more precocious than most of the Redoute’s Choice progeny, scoring on debut at two years in the ATC Canonbury Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) at Rosehill Gardens in January, 2017, form which looks strong as he defeated Menari. Pariah further proved himself one of the best juveniles of his generation by finishing second in the MRC Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr. 3) and then filled the same placing in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr. 1,1200m), going down narrowly after being three wide for most of the journey. Only raced nine times for two wins and three second placings to earn $541,100 in prizemoney, Pariah at three years resumed early this season to score a brilliant victory in the ATC San Domenico Stakes (Gr. 3) in fast time before a fine second to Menari in the ATC Run to the Rose (Gr. 2) with the likes of Kementari and Invader behind him. As well as being a son of Australia’s greatest sire-of-sires, Pariah comes from a sire producing female line, that of top class two-yearold and sprinter Zeditave who left 36 black type winners, seven of them at Group One level, and earners of more than $40 million.

Fee: $24,750
Europe’s champion miler for the past two seasons, Ribchester (Timeform 129 at both 3yrs and 4yrs) should prove a valuable addition to Australia’s sire ranks in 2018. He is a four time Group One winner and broke the track record at Royal Ascot when capturing the historic Queen Anne Stakes. Ribchester raced only 16 times over three seasons for six wins and eight placings, opening his account as a juvenile by taking the Mill Reef Stakes (Gr.2, 6f -1200m) and finishing second in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr. 2) at York. The son of successful international sire Iffraaj improved at three years to defeat a strong field in the Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Deauville, also won the Jersey Stakes (Gr. 3, 7f – 1400m) at Royal Ascot in impressive fashion and placed in three Group One contests, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (8f – 1600m) at Ascot, the Two Thousand Guineas (8f-1600m) at Newmarket and the Goodwood Sussex Stakes (8f – 1600m) when only narrowly beaten. Ribchester’s performances as a four-year-old last year again showed his high class as he picked up three more Group One events, the Queen Anne Stakes, Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and the Newbury Lockinge Stakes, all at around 1600m, and placed in three other Group One tests.

Ribchester’s dam Mujarah (Marju) is a half-sister to stakes winners Tactic and Yaazy while his third dam Mehthaaf, a daughter of Nureyev, was champion three-year-old filly of her year in Britain. This is a branch of the wonderful family tracing back to American blue hen mare Fall Aspen so there is great depth to Ribchester’s pedigree.

With his father heading for another champion sire title Snitzel’s superbly bred and performed son Russian Revolution will be among the most popular of the new sires of 2018. Russian Revolution (Timeform rating 120) was retired from racing after his win in the MRC Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m) at Caulfield in February and last season as a three-year-old he defied a heavy track to win his first Group One sprint, the ATC The Galaxy (Gr. 1, 1100m). Along the way he further showed his ability and class with other black type victories in the ATC Roman Consul Stakes (Gr. 2,1200m), MVRC Ian McEwen Stakes (Gr. 2, 1000m) and the MRC Vain Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m), winning seven of his 11 starts to earn $1,284,225 and was effective on all types of surfaces. In the Roman Consul Stakes he ran a smart 1:09.08 while first up in The Galaxy he defeated $8.7 million earner Redzel into second place, Redzel going on to take The Everest last spring. A half-brother to stakes winner Turbo Miss (Sebring) and to two other winners, Russian Revolution is out of imported Ballet d’Amour (Stravinsky), a winner in the United States and a half-sister to US stakes winner Taletobetold from Exigent, a daughter of influential sire Miswaki (Mr. Prospector). Spieth’s three victories in Sydney were highlighted by his most important success in the City Tattersalls Lightning (Listed, 1100m) at Randwick while another excellent performance was in finishing second, beaten a length, to Redzel in last spring’s ATC Concorde Stakes (Gr. 3, 1000m) run in a sizzling 56.23. Thorn Park, Spieth’s now deceased sire, did very well at stud in New Zealand, leaving 29 stakes winners headed by real stars in Jimmy Choux and Ocean Park, both now standing at stud across the Tasman and doing well as sires, while two of his other high class winners were Veyron and Norzita. Fee: $11,000
Sebring’s fastest son Supido will stand alongside his father at Widden Stud after he winds up his racing career at the Brisbane Winter Carnival. Connections are hopeful of him adding a Group One to his record before retirement but his earlier racing achievements are more than enough to impress broodmare owners that Supido is a very attractive stallion prospect. In his first 17 starts, Supido recorded seven wins plus three placings which brought in $563,650 in prizemoney. Supido’s biggest win came in the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) at Caulfield but this very fast horse has run well in Group One tests on four occasions when third in the SAJC Goodwood (Gr. 1, 1200m), fourth in both the VRC Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr. 1, 1000m) and the MVRC William Reid Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) to Hellbent and fifth in the VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr. 1, 1200m).
